[Bug 1921939] Re: Create Upstream Repo

2021-04-28 Thread Bryan Quigley
The Ubuntu version appears to have diverged in multiple ways AFAICT.

Just installing
It depends on UbuntuDrivers - which has other Ubuntu specific dependencies
(x-kit).

Building:
dh-translations appears to be Ubuntu specific again.

The debian package installs fine in Ubuntu. I'd be happy to create a new
"neutral" upstream on Github based on the debian version if @juliank would be
ok pulling from it for Debian. Eventually Ubuntu could rebase to that to.

Does that makes sense?

[Bug 1921939] [NEW] Create Upstream Repo

2021-03-30 Thread Bryan Quigley
Public bug reported:

I started investigating this due to software-properties in Debian being
listed as under-maintained per https://mako.cc/copyrighteous
/identifying-underproduced-software

AFAICT the source of truth for this package is in the current Ubuntu
packages. Would it be possible to make a real upstream repo that both
Debian and Ubuntu can eventually pull from?

Today, the Debian package has no updates for a while and I get that many
of the additions are for Livepatch/other ubuntu specific things. If it's
better for software-properties in Debian to just become it's own thing,
that's a path too.

[Bug 1875522] Re: suggest removing -d requirement to upgrade to new releases

Just to interject, people rightfully believe do-release-upgrade (without
-d) will upgrade them to Focal, because that's what the Release Notes
say.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FocalFossa/ReleaseNotes#Upgrading_from_Ubuntu_18.04_LTS_or_19.10

IMHO, It's either released or it's not. I like @wxl comment of waiting
to prompt but allowing upgrades.

[Bug 1503773] Re: Drop ondemand init script

2020-04-15 Thread Bryan Quigley
This continues to cause breakage - https://bugs.launchpad.net/charm-
sysconfig/+bug/1873028

I'm still looking for a modern justification for it to exist -
considering AFAIK no other distro does this.

** Description changed:

  Ondemand init script is not inherited from Debian, it's an Ubuntu
  specific change.

  Some reasons to get rid of it:
  On my wily cloud test, systemd blame's 669ms on ondemand on a cloud instance
with no ability to change frequency..
- In the init script we don't run this for android
- Ondemand is already on by default! Why don't we just always use whatever is
that kernel's default?

[Bug 1870585] [NEW] Not cleaning /var/tmp by default

2020-04-03 Thread Bryan Quigley
Public bug reported:

1) 20.04
2) 245.2-1ubuntu2
3) I expect /var/tmp to be cleaned up in some way.
4) It's commented out per
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=773313

In sosreport was comparing the difference between /tmp (Ubuntu/Debian)
and /var/tmp (RH) and determined that as long as /var/tmp gets cleaned
on a regular basis we would prefer /var/tmp.

The bug that appears to have prompted the disabling was fixed a long
time ago, can we have this 30d delete re-enabled by default?

[Bug 1609750] Re: Audio not working on Acer Chromebook R11

2020-03-15 Thread Bryan Quigley
I can get sound to work with a 5.4 kernel - but it's still not great...

I haven't found a UCM file that let's it just work yet. What does work
is using the alsactl -f downloaded/asound.state.txt bit and then VLC is
able to play sound with Audio device set to chtmax98090, Direct hardware
device without any conversions.

My most recent attempt had me force installing (to ignore other depends) the
Gallium deb
http://apt.galliumos.org/pool/main/g/galliumos-baytrail/galliumos-baytrail_3.0_all.deb
(this still lets the above alsa restore, vlc bit work, but pulseaudio fails to
load)

I would suggest the charm should just do the apt install with --no-

That doesn't install chrony..

[Bug 1865195] [NEW] Please remove juju-deployer from focal archive

2020-02-28 Thread Bryan Quigley
Public bug reported:

Juju-deployer appears to be dead (Juju has added this functionality
IMU), and hasn't been updated in a while
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/juju-deployer/+bug/1643665)

It is not install-able:
$ sudo apt install juju-deployer
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 juju-deployer : Depends: python-bzrlib but it is not installable
 Depends: python-jujuclient (>= 0.15) but it is not going to be
installed
 Depends: python-pkg-resources but it is not going to be
installed
 Depends: python-yaml but it is not going to be installed
 Depends: python2:any (< 2.8)
 Depends: python2:any (>= 2.7~)
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

It has no reverse depends:
$ reverse-depends src:juju-deployer
No reverse dependencies found
bryan@desktop:~$ reverse-depends -b src:juju-deployer
No reverse dependencies found

And it's not in debian.

[Bug 1840640] Re: sync_file_range fails in nspawn containers on arm, ppc

2019-11-08 Thread Bryan Quigley
** Description changed:

  [impact]

  calling the glibc function sync_file_range() on a armhf nspawn container
  fails.

  [test case]

  see sample C program from original description below. compile and run
  that inside a nspawn container on armhf and it will fail.
+
+ nspawn instructions:
+ sudo apt install debootstrap systemd-container
+ sudo -i
+ debootstrap --arch=armhf bionic ~/bionic-tree/
+ systemd-nspawn -D ~/bionic-tree/

  [regression potential]

  this only adjusts nspawn to allow the sync_file_range2 syscall which is
  used on armhf, so the regression potential is very low. any possible
  regressions would likely be when calling sync_file_range().

  [other info]

  original description:
  ---

  ARM has two sync_file_range syscalls, sync_file_range and
  sync_file_range2. The former is apparently not used, and glibc calls the
  latter whenever a userspace program calls sync_file_range. I'm guessing
  systemd-nspawn doesn't know this, because the follow code consistently
  fails in an nspawn container on ARM:

  #define _GNU_SOURCE
  #include
  #include
  #include
  #include

  void main()
  {
  int f = open("/tmp/syncrange.test",O_CREAT|O_RDWR,0666);
  int r=sync_file_range(f, 0, 0, 0);
  if (r)
  perror("sync_file_range");
  close(f);
  }

  This seems to be causing problems specifically for borg(backup) and
  postgres:

[Bug 1772588] Re: Remove obsolete X11 drivers from the archive

2019-11-07 Thread Bryan Quigley
@leosmuller
evdev was already marked invalid so it's not considered for removal as part of
this bug report. See comment #1.

siliconmotion - If they work for you on 18.04 LTS, you can keep running
that until 2023. I would be shocked if these are saving you power - and
happy to help with an analysis in specifics if you want. Please use the
contact this user button on my Launchpad page to discuss further (click
my name). We can bring a conclusion back to this bug report if relevant
- most of that conversation likely wouldn't be relevant.

[Bug 1844458] [NEW] Drop transitional flashplugin-downloader package

2019-09-04 Thread Bryan Quigley
The docs have been updated to no longer reference libnss-ldap:
https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/sssd-ad.html

It appears the SSSD docs have also been improved. Will see about
revisiting the rest of this bug.

[Bug 1841717] [NEW] Remove from Ubuntu 19.10

2019-08-27 Thread Bryan Quigley
Public bug reported:

This was originally added with the expectation that Ubuntu (it's not in
Debian) had a team to maintain it: See original add bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openerp6.1/+bug/1053933

Odoo (they renamed years ago) is actively maintained and is at version
12 (https://www.odoo.com/odoo-12-release-notes /
https://github.com/odoo/odoo).

Odoo itself provide their own debs (and RPMs and docker images, etc) and
is available as a SaaS. It's an impressive product but I don't see an
advantage of having in Archive vs their own distribution method.

I don't think it's feasible to try to add Odoo 12 as an upgrade to
OpenERP6.1, so even if someone wanted a modern variant in archive I
think it would have to be a distinct package.

[Bug 1841715] [NEW] Remove testdrive from Ubuntu 19.10

2019-08-27 Thread Bryan Quigley
Public bug reported:

Upstream development stopped in 2015: https://code.launchpad.net/testdrive
It depends on bits we want to remove
* Python2
* pygtk (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/testdrive/+bug/1740817)
* python-notify

No reverse depends:
bryan@desktop:~$ reverse-depends src:testdrive
No reverse dependencies found
bryan@desktop:~$ reverse-depends -b src:testdrive
No reverse dependencies found

I did look at forking it for a bit. My evaluation is it makes more
sense to add this functionality to something else rather than keep this
package in archive. (virt-manager , Boxes, or multipass - was aiming
for multipass but so far it was decided this was out of scope)

[Bug 1841699] [NEW] Remove from Archive 19.10

2019-08-27 Thread Bryan Quigley
Public bug reported:

https://github.com/canonical-webteam-archive/tour.ubuntu.com
It is for an older version of the Unity desktop.

$ reverse-depends src:ubuntu-online-tour
No reverse dependencies found

>From the Github archive:
"This project has been discontinued, and will be archived. This project hasn't
been updated since Ubuntu 14.04, and we have no future plans to keep it up to
date with the latest Ubuntu versions.

The project will be taken down from https://tour.ubuntu.com, and that
domain will be redirected to https://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/features.
The code will remain here for the foreseeable future for posterity."

I see no reason to have it in the Ubuntu archive. It also depends on
python2 (for building).

I was also able to reproduce this on Eoan by specifying vers=4.0 - where
I thought it should be fixed.

I was able to confirm that the -proposed 4.15 kernel (I tested xenial
HWE version) does have the fix and it
works:https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/xenial-
