[Bug 284408] Re: r3xx Hardware does not work with fglrx [EPR#257839]

2008-11-16 Thread ByteJuggler
Ok another update... I've tonight installed all the intrepid-proposed
updates that includes the update for puling in the FGLRX 8.11 Catalyst
driver from ATI.

Unfortunately this didn't work, and I'm now back back to a totally
non-functional fglrx for my 9800XT. Things I've tried:
- uninstalling fglrx related packages completely then reinstalling 8.11
package from ATI website
- recreated config with aticonfig --initial -f
Neither of these 2 remedies resulted in a working fglrx driver.

I should mention, I'm now consistently getting the same error on trying
to start with the fglrx driver that I reported here for the 8.10 package
against the Intrepid Beta: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/xorg-server/+bug/286140

[Bug 284408] Re: r3xx Hardware does not work with fglrx [EPR#257839]

2008-11-14 Thread ByteJuggler
Just as an aside, I think my meddling with
System-Administration-Hardware was in fact detrimental, as I see the
box again won't boot properly on Intrepid this morning (crashing with
the fglrx driver which presumably was replaced again with the Ubuntu
installed 8.10 version when I enabled it in
System-Administration-Hardware. Funny thing is, I thought I had a
successful boot with that last night, the dialog even said driver
enabled etc etc.) So, for anyone on Intrepid wanting to use fglrx,
install the 8.11 driver from the ATI site, but leave the
System-Administration-Hardware dialog alone.

2008-11-13 Thread ByteJuggler
Well, the new 8.11 ATI driver release cured the problems for me. I have
an ATI Radeon 9800XT (RV350/R360). (I downloaded the 8.11 driver from
ATI and installed that, then went back into the
System-Administration-Hardware drivers and enabled there as well.
Driver is working fine.

[Bug 296563] [NEW] support.ati.com: Firefox 3 on Ubuntu 8.10, form submit to ATI site hangs and eventually reports error, when trying to submit bug report. The same URL/report on Firefox 2.x/Firefox 3

2008-11-10 Thread ByteJuggler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.3)
Gecko/2008101315 Ubuntu/8.10 (intrepid) Firefox/3.0.3
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.3)
Gecko/2008101315 Ubuntu/8.10 (intrepid) Firefox/3.0.3

Ubuntu release: 8.10
Firefox package: 3.0.3+nobinonly-0ubun

Summary:
I've been trying for some time to report a bug re the Linux ATI driver using
their support site URL
(http://support.ati.com/ics/survey/survey.asp?deptID=894surveyID=508type=web
), but it fails every time using Firefox 3.x
(from my Ubuntu 8.10 install.)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
To reproduce the problem:
1.) Install Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid), apply all updates.
2.) Using the installed firefox, visit the URL:
http://support.ati.com/ics/survey/survey.asp?deptID=894surveyID=508type=web
3.) Attempt to make a bug report and click submit.
4.) Watch it wait/try for a couple of minutes and eventually fail.

Actual Results:
The browser hangs and eventually reports an error (failing to complete the bug
report on the ATI site.)

Expected Results:
The browswer should succeed and navigate the ATI bug report completion page.

I tested using Firefox 2.x as well as FireFox 3.0.3 on Windows and both
succeeded, which implies this is an Ubuntu specific/platform specific
bug. Note: All tests were done with no theming or any special add-ons
installed. I've also tried with Firefox safe-mode. The test still
fails.

I've reported this bug to Mozilla, who advised I should report the bug
here if it's isolated to Ubuntu. The bug report is available here:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=463898

2008-11-03 Thread ByteJuggler
Probably should be filed against the xorg-driver-fglrx package if it's a
bug against the ATI proprietary package, so changing the package.

** Summary changed:

- xorg crashes during startup with the proprietary driver.
+ xorg server crashes during startup with the ATI proprietary driver (fglrx)

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati
+ Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx

When the ATI proprietary driver is enabled the startup of the xserver
fails, prompting to either continue in low-graphics mode, reconfiguring
  xorg or troubleshooting the situation.

The reconfiguration fails every time I've tried it - the only thing that
works is to load the low-graphics mode using the alternate driver.

My graphics card is an ATI 9800XT.

It worked for a couple of days in Intrepid Ibex but then there was an
patch to the driver and it began to fail.

Sourcepackagename: xserver-xorg-video-ati = fglrx-installer

[Bug 292868] [NEW] X fails to start - black screen and freeze on 8.10 Intrepid final with ATI R360 9800XT AGP

2008-11-02 Thread ByteJuggler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Ubuntu release: 8.10
xserver-xorg-video-ati:
  Installed: 1:6.9.0+git20081003.f9826a56-0ubuntu2

Sine the last update bringing my Intrepid install to release level, X
fails to start completely, leaving me at a black screen from which no vt
can be brought up. It should be noted that the version of driver
supplied on the original Intrepid Beta worked very well, even compiz
worked. A later update (RC?) caused compiz support to be
disabled/removed, and now (with release) the driver does not seem to
work at all.

I'll add there's several bugs which seem similar to this one (but might
not be) so I'm filing a seperate bug for now. In addition, I'll note
this bug seems suspciously similar to Bug #67487.

I'll attach the xorg log for the hanging/crashing startup.

OK, the latest driver available from here
(http://ppa.launchpad.net/tormodvolden/ubuntu/pool/main/x/xserver-xorg-video-ati/)
fixes the problem (allows my machine to start X successfully again.).
The version I installed and that resolved my problem:

1:6.9.0+git20081029.937b7ac2-0ubuntu0tormod2

Compiz however still doesn't work.

buntu release information (lsb_release -rd output):
Description:Ubuntu 8.04
Release:8.04

Seahorse package information:
  Installed: 2.22.1-0ubuntu2

Issue description:
What is expected: When creating a new key, (Click Key menu then Create new
Key), the resulting shown dialog entitled New PGP Key is (on my system at
least) should fully display all the controls it contains.
What happens instead: Apparently the dialog is too small to contain the
controls. Specifically, the 3 edit boxes and the Create button is hanging
off the right side of the dialog. See attached screenshot.

Other possibly useful information: Running with Nvidia accelerated
graphics driver and with compiz enabled.

** Affects: seahorse (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 62230] Re: Corrupt graphics on boot with 7800GT/nv

Just to confirm this is still present on the Hardy beta. Safe graphics
mode appears to work.

[Bug 155185] Yet another set of users who deleted their XP installations

2007-12-19 Thread ByteJuggler
See this thread, which contains another 2 new end-users who had somehow
accidentally wiped their xp partitions.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=644332

We really must be exceedingly clear whenever any operation that will
cause data loss is undertaken by the installer.

[Bug 155185] Re: More warning about installation

2007-11-08 Thread ByteJuggler
I would say this bug is becoming critical. There are repeated threads
on the forums and elsewhere about new users deleting their XP partitions
by mistake.

See for example:

[Bug 133343] Re: Installer should warn if previous installation of Ubuntu exists

2007-11-05 Thread ByteJuggler
For systems with a seperate home partition, it would be good if one of
the options presented initially would be something like Re-
install/upgrade system, keeping existing home folder/user data, which
if chosen, should then automatically use the same partition
mounting/mappings as the previous installation did. Some care/warnings
would have to be presented depending on whether the user has a seperate
home partition (and if not advised that they will LOSE all data if they
proceed with a single partition reinstalltion, together with the advice
that an upgrade may be performed from the operating system itself, not
the LiveCD.) Additionally, the manual partitioner should ideally
always default to picking the correct mount points for a pre-existing
system, and not mount the old root, boot, home etc under media.

The reason I'm suggesting these changes is that I've been reinstalling
fairly regularly lately testing various things, and so have a seperate
home partition to prevent it from being blown away on reinstall. The
only annoying thing here was that due to the manual installer choosing
mount points under /media by default, I have to manually go and edit
them to point to the right places again every time.

[Bug 67487] Re: [edgy][regression][rv280] black screen and console freeze when X starts

2006-11-05 Thread ByteJuggler
Correction: Step 4 above (in the ati section) should read:
4.) Move the new config file to the appropriate place by executing:
 mv /home/ubuntu/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
