[Bug 1658921] Re: NetworkManager does not manage wired connection

2017-04-14 Thread Chip Rosenthal
I just upgraded 16.10 -> 17.04 and this defect still is present. The bad
/usr/lib/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf was
recreated and I had to delete it to get my wired LAN back.

[Bug 1658921] Re: NetworkManager does not manage wired connection

2017-04-12 Thread Chip Rosenthal
I encountered this defect defect on an upgrade from 16.04 to 16.10. I
removed the /usr/lib/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-
devices.conf file and it resolved the problem.

Any reason why a fix is not being applied?

I encountered this while troubleshooting bug 1569651. So, if you want to
duplicate this problem, introduce an error into /etc/xdg/akonadi/mysql-
global.conf as shown in that bug.

[Bug 1469849] [NEW] Open Database hangs

2015-06-29 Thread Chip Rosenthal
Public bug reported:

At startup, I can start keepassx and connect to the database in history.
Or, I can specify the database on the command line, and it works fine.

If, however, I do: File -> Open Database ... then it hangs.

The Open Database dialog window is created (sometimes after a delay).
The window has the WM decoration, but inside is completely blank.

I get the busy cursor when I mouse over the application.

The following error messages are being produced:

Object::connect: No such signal
org::freedesktop::UPower::DeviceAdded(QDBusObjectPath)
Object::connect: No such signal
org::freedesktop::UPower::DeviceRemoved(QDBusObjectPath)

The only recourse is to kill the application and restart (with desired
database specified on the command line).

Everything was working fine until recently, when I installed some OS
updates.

[Bug 13130] Re: Debconf uninitialized variable

2011-11-07 Thread Chip Rosenthal
I just added myself as "having this issue" but the more I look at it the
more I believe this is a filesystem issue. Both my /var/lib/dpkg and
/var/cache/debconf directories look unhealthy (files appear to be
truncated, corrupted, etc.)

This is on a laptop system running on a SSD ex4 with no journal (i.e.
very susceptible to problems on ungraceful shutdown).

You could argue this is not an application issue, but the package
manager is such an essential part and the filesystem structure is so
complicated, I wonder if some sort of integrity tests/better diagnostics
might be called for.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: apache2

- If $APACHE_LOG_DIR (as defined in /etc/apache2/envvars), server startup
- fails.
+ If $APACHE_LOG_DIR (as defined in /etc/apache2/envvars) does not exist,
+ server startup fails.

- This situation is extremely common on a host that has a root filesystem
- SSD. In this case, /var/log may be put on a ramdisk that is created on
- each boot.
+ This would happen, for instance, if /var/log is on a ramdisk. That is
+ something commonly done for systems that use an SSD drive. Putting logs
+ on a ramdisk avoids wearing out the SSD flash memory.

- It would be helpful if the apache initscript createad the log directory

[Bug 796750] [NEW] apache2 startup fails with missing log directory

2011-06-13 Thread Chip Rosenthal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache2

If $APACHE_LOG_DIR (as defined in /etc/apache2/envvars), server startup
fails.

This situation is extremely common on a host that has a root filesystem
SSD. In this case, /var/log may be put on a ramdisk that is created on
each boot.

It would be helpful if the apache initscript createad the log directory
if needed.

SYSTEM: Ubuntu 11.04 (amd64)
PACKAGE: apache2.2-common 2.2.17-1ubuntu1

** Affects: apache2 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 455144] [NEW] 9.10 Koala - usability problem with domain of search

2009-10-18 Thread Chip Rosenthal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kpackagekit

There is a confusing usability problem with the way the search field is
implemented.

The search domain appears to be "All packages", even if you've selected
a different packages group. For instance, if you select the "KDE
Desktop" packages group and do a search, you might think you are
searching within that group but you aren't.

Example procedure to illustrate:

1. Launch KPackageKit
2. Change the package group to "KDE desktop".
3. Do a search on "screensaver".

Note that the results will be all "screensaver" packages, not just those
constrained to the "KDE desktop" group.

See screenshot below.

This sorting problem occurs under other conditions too. For instance, if
you use the right-most dropdown to switch packages, the heading will
retain the sort indicator before, but the results will be unsorted.

[Bug 439704] Re: kubuntu desktop starts with no desktop

2009-10-01 Thread Chip Rosenthal
When I removed the KVM and connected the monitor (VGA connection)
directly to the computer, the display configured to the right resolution

Possibly a DDC issue?

Should KDE desktop startup silently fail if it cannot determine monitor
information?

[Bug 439704] [NEW] kubuntu desktop starts with no desktop

2009-09-30 Thread Chip Rosenthal
Public bug reported:

I booted using the Kubuntu karmic alpha 9 desktop CD.

The system booted fine, KDE started up, got the KDE startup chime,
but then the desktop went completely black. No wallpaper or menus or widgets.

The mouse cursor was visible but clicks had no effect.

Keyboard shortcuts work (e.g. ALT-F1 brings up KDE launch menu,
CTRL-ALT-DEL brings up shutdown dialog.)

[Bug 271506] [NEW] KDE titlebar wheel event not working [intrepid]

2008-09-17 Thread Chip Rosenthal
Public bug reported:

This is with Kubuntu Intrepid (system upgraded from Hardy), all current
updates applied.

In system settings, did: Window Behavior -> Titlebar Actions
Set "Titlebar Wheel Event" to "Move to Previous/Next Desktop".
(See attached screenshot.)

Scrolling mouse wheel over titlebar has no effect.

This used to work in Hardy.
Tried other setting values, but nothing happens.
Mouse wheel is working. (When I wheel in a Firefox window the page scrolls up

[Bug 271452] [NEW] cannot mount USB memory device through KDE desktop [intrepid]

2008-09-17 Thread Chip Rosenthal
Public bug reported:

I am using Kubuntu 8.10, with all packages current as of now. System
was updated with update-manager -c -d.

Under Hardy, when I connected my MP3 player to the system it would show
the device in the task bar. I could right click and select "mount".
Then I could sync my player.

This is not working since I upgraded to Intrepid.

When I connect my MP3 player to USB, it is recognized and device
/dev/sdd is created.

See the attached log that shows the kernel and HAL output from the
insertion.

The "Devices recently plugged in" window opens up from the task bar, and
lists IAUDIO as a device. When I hover over the entry it displays "Open
with Dolphin." When I click the entry, nothing happens.

If I launch Dolphin it shows IAUDIO in the Places sidebar, but when I
click on it nothing happens.

I can, however, mount the device manually, and it works fine.

$ sudo mount /dev/sdd1 /mnt/tmp
$ df -v /mnt/tmp
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdd1 29280176  28102624   1177552  96% /mnt/tmp

[Bug 270701] [NEW] dokuwiki upgrade hangs on keyboard input

2008-09-15 Thread Chip Rosenthal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dokuwiki

I am doing an upgrade to 8.10 with upgrade-manager -c -d.

The "Distribution Upgrade" window is open, running, and working the
"installing the upgrades" phase.

When it got to the dokuwiki upgrade, it hung.

When I did a "ps" in another window, I observed the following processes
running:

root 14739 15665  0 17:24 pts/600:00:02 /usr/bin/dpkg --force-overwrite
--status-fd 5 --configure linux-libc-dev libc6-dev libc6-i686 zlib1g-dev py
root 18203 14739  0 17:34 pts/600:00:00 /usr/bin/perl -w
/usr/share/debconf/frontend /var/lib/dpkg/info/dokuwiki.postinst configure
0.0.20070626b-1
root 18215 18203  0 17:34 pts/600:00:00 /usr/bin/perl -w
/var/lib/dpkg/info/dokuwiki.postinst configure 0.0.20070626b-1
root 18560 18215  0 17:39 pts/600:00:00 sh -c /usr/bin/ucf

/usr/share/dokuwiki/inc/lang/.htaccess /usr/share/dokuwiki/inc/lang/.htaccess

I guess from PID 18560 it was hung on keyboard input. There was no
prompt in the upgrade window, and no other windows were opened. I put
focus on the upgrade process and struck ENTER. The upgrade resumed.

[Bug 257028] [NEW] IsCallerPrivileged error when trying to mount USB media

2008-08-11 Thread Chip Rosenthal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-kio-plugins

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04
kdebase-kio-plugins 4:3.5.9-0ubuntu7.3

Recently, mounting of USB devices has stopped working. I've seen this
with both USB memory stick and MP3 player.

The symptom is that when I insert the unmounted device I get the icon in
my task bar.

When I click and select mount I get a popup window that says:

IsCallerPrivileged() failed

See attached screenshot.

The same thing happens when I run from the command line:

$ kio_media_mounthelper -m media:/sdd1

Other uses are reporting this problem too:

[Bug 70165] Re: Palm/Treo Not Talking to Kernel (2.6.17)

2007-04-13 Thread Chip Rosenthal
Sync for my Samsung i500 (a USB Palm device) broke sometime in the past
couple weeks.  (I'm using kpilot.)

I found the workaround is to do: modprobe visor

Once that module is loaded, the /dev/ttyUSB[01] devices would get
created, and then I could sync.

You may want to see if "modprobe visor" solves this.

I suspect this bug is NOT with the kernel, but with udev not properly
inserting the module when the device is attached.

[Bug 99166] Re: window resize displays in pixels not rows/columns

2007-04-02 Thread Chip Rosenthal
This konsole (mis)behavior appears to be intentional, so it's probably
(unfortunately) not a valid bug.

The workaround is to do:

Settings -> Configure Konsole -> General -> Show terminal size after
resizing.

This will bring up a box that shows "Size: cols x rows".

[Bug 99166] window resize displays in pixels not rows/columns

2007-03-30 Thread Chip Rosenthal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: konsole

This is konsole 1.6.6 from the current Feisty.

I did: System Settings -> Window Behavior -> Moving
and enabled: Display window geometry when moving or resize.

Now, when I try to move or resize a konsole window, the geometry is
displayed, but the geometry is displayed in pixels. It should be rows
and columns.

I checked with xterm, and it is working correctly.

[Bug 91961] feisty herd5: no user account, won't install grub

2007-03-13 Thread Chip Rosenthal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

I tried to install kubuntu feisty herd5 i386 alternate and two problems
occurred:

* At the spot where I'd normally be prompted for a full name to create a
user account, I was instead prompted for a password. After typing
password confirmation, it continued. I switched to another screen and
looked at the passwd file, and no entries had been made.

* At the end of the procedure, when it should install the boot loader,
it wanted to install LILO. I did a back into the debian-installer tasks
list and there was no option to install or select GRUB.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION:

The problem may be related to the disk configuration.

The system had two SATA hard drives.

The first drive was configured with a single LVM physical volume, and
that PV assigned to one volume group. I planned to reformat just the
root and var filesystems and install there.

The second drive was configured with a single LVM physical volume, and
that PV assigned to another volume group. I planned to make no changes
to this disk. (This was a drive from an old system, and I just wanted to
have it available to mount to retrieve old data.)

WORKAROUND:

I pulled the second drive, restarted the installation, and it ran
successfully.

Therefore, I suspect the confusion may be related to the LVM
configuration on that second disk.

2006-11-26 Thread Chip Rosenthal
I too had this problem (hibernation broke on update to Edgy). The

My problem may have been that my /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume file

Somehow the swap partition UUID never got registered there on the Edgy
upgrade.

[Bug 73170] libvisual cannot be found by pkg-config

2006-11-24 Thread Chip Rosenthal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libvisual-0.4-dev

Programs that use pkg-config to locate libvisual (such as ProjectM) will
not build correctly. The symptom is that the configure script fails
saying it cannot find the library, even though it is installed.

The reason for the failure is because pkg-config is unable to locate the
library. You can see this by typing:

$ pkg-config --print-errors libvisual
Package libvisual was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libvisual.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'libvisual' found
$ echo $?
1

The problem is that the version number is embedded in the pkg-config
file. Here is my workaround:

$ cd /usr/lib/pkgconfig
$ sudo ln -s libvisual-0.4.pc libvisual.pc

Now it works correctly:

$ pkg-config --print-errors libvisual
$ echo $?
0
