[Bug 1835558] Re: Terminal output of a deal shows '?' instead of unicode suit symbol or letter

2019-07-05 Thread Chris Schoonbee
** Description changed:

When I invoke `deal` in a Gnome terminal, the output of the hands
displays a '?' character where I would expect either a letter
representing the suit eg 'S', 'H', 'D' or 'C' or else the unicode suit
  symbol eg ♠.

My terminal is capable of displaying unicode symbols eg I can type in ♠
  at the command line.
+
+ Interestingly, if I specify the practice-hand format, then it outputs suit
letters eg S, H, D, C, and not '?' characters. Although, in what may be
another bug I have to use the following command:
+ $ deal -i /usr/share/deal/format/practice 8
+ instead of, as given in the instructions,:
+ $ deal -i format/practice 8
+ ie I have to specify the full path to the format file.

[Bug 1767259] Re: ubuntu 18.04 The 'grub-efi-amd64-signed' package failed to install into / targer.

2018-05-07 Thread Chris Schoonbee
Workaround:

I had the same problem doing a default install (ie erase disk and
install Ubuntu. No fancy resizing, selecting own partitions etc hence
not duplicate of #1766945). But I did select LVM.

Repeated the installation but this time I first ensured I was connected
to the internet with a wifi connection and then allowed downloading of
updates during the installation. Installation was successful.

Possible caveat: I am booting in insecure mode. Not sure whether that
makes a difference.

[Bug 1083649] [NEW] Circular dependency on package brother-cups-wrapper-laser

2012-11-27 Thread Chris Schoonbee
Public bug reported:

With recent previous releases of Ubuntu (12.04, 11.10) to get my Brother
MFC7420 printer to work I needed to install the package
`brother-cups-wrapper-laser`. This had a given dependency on
brother-lpr-drivers-laser (eg using the command `aptitude show
brother-cups-wrapper-laser`) which was then automatically installed. The
status of both packages after installation was that they were correctly and
completely installed as seen for example by a command such as
$ aptitude search brother
However in Ubuntu 12.10, the `brother-cups-wrapper-laser` still has a
dependency on the brother-lpr-drivers-laser package but now examining the
latter package with `aptitude show` shows that this now is now dependent on the
cups-wrapper package in turn.
The package installation still works in the sense that the printer can be
configured through the System settings but package management tools such as
aptitude show that both packages are broken.

This is likely to cause other problems with package management down the
line.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10
Package: brother-lpr-drivers-laser 2.0.1-3-0ubuntu5

[Bug 1079641] [NEW] bash-completion of filename does not work 100% (unlike git) - gives ": 1: unary operator expected" error

2012-11-16 Thread Chris Schoonbee
Public bug reported:

Problem description

Using bash-completion to complete a file name where one is expected. However
after pressing after typing enough letters to identify the file uniquely,
an error or warning message is injected into the output and then the file name
is completed. The eg command does however seem to be executed after pressing
.

Example

I have a file called `unique` which has been modified and which I wish to
stage. I type the following partial command and then press Tab:
   $ eg stage un
I get the following output:
eg stage unbash: [: 1: unary operator expected
ique
with the cursor blinking on the end of the second line.
If I then press the command seems to be correctly executed as evidenced
by the output of eg status. However the error message is disconcerting and
distracting.

Note that using the `git` command directly does not give any error. eg
   $ git stage un
gives
   $ git stage unique

[Bug 1079628] [NEW] `eg status` does not show tracked files with unstaged modifications

2012-11-16 Thread Chris Schoonbee
Public bug reported:

Steps to recreate problem with eg (easygit) status command
---
1. Create a temporary testing directory e.g.
$ mkdir -p ~/temp/eg_bug
$ cd ~/temp/eg_bug
2. Create two text files in the directory. e.g.
$ echo "this is the first file" > file1
$ echo "this is the second file" > file2
3. Create a git repository in the directory
   $ eg init
4. Check status
   $ eg status
OUTPUT: Correctly shows two newly created unknown files (as does $ git status)
5. Get git to track the files
   $ eg stage .
6. Check status
   $ eg status
OUTPUT: Correctly shows the two files with changes ready to be committed
("staged") (as does `git status`)
5. Do first commit
$ eg commit -m "Initial commit"
4. Check status
   $ eg status
OUTPUT: Correctly shows no modified files (as does `git status`)
6. Now modify the two existing files
   $ echo "Add second line" >> file1
   $ echo "Add second line" >> file2
7. Check status
   $ eg status
*UNEXPECTED OUTPUT*: (Pasted from terminal)
(On branch master)
(Changes not staged for commit:)
( (use "git add ..." to update what will be committed))
( (use "git checkout -- ..." to discard changes in working
directory))

There is a hint that there are changes not staged for commit but it does not
list any files!
Note that `git status` lists both modified files under "Changes not staged for
commit:". This is EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR
8. Stage one of the modified files
   $ eg stage file1
9. Check status
   $ eg status
*UNEXPECTED OUTPUT*: (Pasted from terminal)
(On branch master)
Changes ready to be committed ("staged"):
modified: file1

Now it shows the modified file (file1) that is staged but there is no longer
even a hint that there is a file with changes that has not been staged (file2).
Note that `git status` shows both modfied files as expected:
# On branch master
# Changes to be committed:
# (use "git reset HEAD ..." to unstage)
#
# modified: file1
#
# Changes not staged for commit:
# (use "git add ..." to update what will be committed)
# (use "git checkout -- ..." to discard changes in working directory)
#
# modified: file2
#

[Bug 943733] Re: While typing in dash no files or folders show up

2012-03-19 Thread Chris Schoonbee
In follow up to my previous comment, I notice that the unity package version is
the same for my desktop and laptop ( 4.28.0-0ubuntu2).
Also, in a guest account on my desktop computer the dash search includes files
and folders.
So the problem looks more like a configuration or interaction conflict specific
to my user account. This is more tricky to track down. I thought it might
have something to do with installing tracker-gui, another way of searching
files and folders. However even after removing it, the problem is still there.
I guess I will have to create another user account for myself and try to see if
and when the problem re-occurs.

[Bug 943733] Re: While typing in dash no files or folders show up

2012-03-18 Thread Chris Schoonbee
The problem may not be with package unity-lens-files itself. I say this
because I checked on my laptop which I do not use very often and hence
do not keep up to date. It is also 11.04 and I see it has the same
unity-lens-files package version as on my desktop (0.6.12-0ubuntu1).
But on the laptop, typing into the Dash search bar also includes files
and folders in the results.

So the problem may be in a higher-level program (? dash or unity) which
is not interacting correctly with the Files lens.

[Bug 943733] Re: While typing in dash no files or folders show up

The Find Files search was working previously on my system. It must have
stopped fairly recently, perhaps after an update.

It's a pleasure - I'm glad my comment was helpful to someone.
It would be nice if some visible feedback was restored when mounting.

[Bug 853661] Re: Archive Mounter doesn't work

2011-11-03 Thread Chris Schoonbee
I also thought that this bug affects me but now I have realised that
archive mount does work in Ubuntu 11.10 for me; there just isn't much
visible feedback.

When I right-click on an .iso file in Nautilus (Ubuntu 11.10), there is
no visibly obvious feedback but now scroll down the Places sidepanel to
the Network section. My iso is now mounted there.

In Ubuntu 11.04 I it mounted it under the Device section which is at
the top and so more visible.

Does this solve the bug reporter's problem?

[Bug 883794] [NEW] package bzr-doc seems to be missing the User Reference

2011-10-30 Thread Chris Schoonbee
Public bug reported:

View the main Bazaar html documentation page
(file:///usr/share/doc/bzr/html/index.html) in a browser.
The second item under Core Documentation is 'User Reference'. However clicking
on this link gives an error message:
"Firefox can't find the file at
/usr/share/doc/bzr/html/en/user-reference/bzr_man.html"

I thought it might be a misspelt filename but there is not even a folder
'user-reference' as there is a folder 'user-guide'.
Looking at the corresponding text-based template files in
/usr/share/doc/bzr/txt/en/ there is a 'user-reference' folder but it is empty
except for a readme.txt file.

On previous version of ubuntu the bzr html documentation did have a User

Short-term fix:

Edit the html file (as sudo) to correct the url e.g.

Then search for the "modindex.html" url and replace with "py-
modindex.html" and save the corrected file

[Bug 750705] Re: Random segmentation fault in thunderbird

2011-06-05 Thread Chris Schoonbee
I use Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS. Since late May/ early June 2011 Thunderbird has been
crashing randomly on me. Subsequently I have been starting it in a terminal
and each time it crashes (about once a day) it says 'Segmentation fault'.
I am using Thunderbird version 3.1.10
(3.1.10+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.10.04.1).

I have noticed no other stability problems other than Firefox but this
has been crashing randomly for much longer already and I have learnt to
live with it, ascribing it to problematic web pages or scripts. I do
not start it from a terminal so I see no error messages apart from the
'Oops' dialog given by Firefox.

[Bug 458459] Re: PDF form fields are not displayed

2009-10-27 Thread Chris Schoonbee
Marking as confirmed. In fact when I view the pdf attachment using
Evince 2.28.1 on Karmic I see even less than the 9.04 screenshot
attached . All I see is a blank grey button. The odd thing is that if
I select all the text, (Ctrl-A), the text areas are highlighted and I
can copy the text into say gedit.

I have a similar problem with a simpler PDF which I attach. Acroread 9
displays the file just fine.

+ Fix / Work-around
+ ---
+ Just to make things clear for people who see the same bug and get confused -
you *can* send files using Thunderbird.
+ Although the Send To menu shows "Email (Evolution)" even though Thunderbird
may be set as the Gnome default email program, if you click Send, your default
email program will be opened to compose the email.
+
+ It seems that this version of nautilus-sendto had had the name

[Bug 313159] Re: Play queue only works once and then 'freezes'

2009-03-14 Thread Chris Schoonbee
@Pedro: No, I also get this problem if I select songs straight from a
commercial music CD.
I am not sure what your comment about the files not being removed from the
queue means - I am not a technical user.

@Sebastien: I still get the issue on my updated Hardy. When I last
tested it with Jaunty (alpha 3) I also got the issue. I have not tried
the latest Jaunty alpha. This is because it is not available from a
local mirror and international bandwidth is still very expensive in my
country (government monopoly). Updating my Jaunty would take 426MB
which is almost a third of my 1.5 GB monthly bandwidth quota.

What happens when *you* follow the recipe above on your Hardy and Jaunty
installs? Create a queue with say just three songs. You can use Next button and
the scroll button to skip over most of the playing time so that following the
recipe won't take more than a minute each time.
If the problem behaviour appears on your Hardy but not on your Jaunty, it
probably means the bug has been fixed. In which case I do not want to file an
upstream bug report.
But if you get the problem behaviour on both your Hardy and Jaunty, please let
me know and I will open a bug report in the Gnome bugzilla.

[Bug 313159] Re: Play queue only works once and then 'freezes'

2009-03-14 Thread Chris Schoonbee
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: rhythmbox

  Problem versions:
  ---
Rhythmbox 0.11.6 (apt-cache policy gives Installed:
0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.2)
  Ubuntu 8.10, Jaunty Alpha-2

Regression behaviour (and possible clue to the bug's origin)
  --
Problem does not occur in Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 (Rhythmbox 0.11.5) so this is a
-regression-.
However, there was a different problem (I will give more details in a
comment) with this version and I am now thinking that perhaps the fix for that
problem ended up creating this new bug. This is just idle speculation on my
part but it may also be a clue.

  Steps to reproduce problem symptoms:
  ---
  1. Open Rhythmbox (First close existing session if already open)
  2. Place one or two songs into the Play Queue from say your Music library or
from an audio CD. (Right-click on each song and "Add to Play Queue")
  3. Play the queue. (Highlight Play Queue in left sidebar and then click on
the Play toolbar button.
  Results of this step:
The Play button visually changes to its depressed state and the songs in
the queue play. Each song disappears from the queue as it finishes playing.
- This is the expected (correct) behaviour so far. *But notice the
following.* When the queue has finished and there are no more songs shown in
the queue, the Play button still remains depressed. This is unexpected
behaviour to my mind and it may be associated with the main problem. Since
there are no more songs to play, I would expect the Play button to revert to
its normal unpressed state.

  4. Once the queue has finished playing, click the Play button to change it
back to its normal state. *Note:* This step does not seem to affect the
outcome whether it is done or not.
  5. Create another short play queue as described above in step 2.
  6. Try to play the new queue as described in step 3 above.

played. This is the main unexpected behaviour symptom of this bug report. I
would expect that the new queue can be played just like the first one.

Debug output from rhythmbox when reproducing unexpected behaviour
---

Hi Pedro. Thanks for your response. (Sorry - it is not clear from the sidebar
that you were subscribed.) Here is the debug report you requested. I hope it
helps.
I have updated my Jaunty and I still get the behaviour on the two machines I
tried.

Given the workaround - viz just double-clicking on the first song in the
queue, this is clearly a low priority bug. However, hopefully it can
still be borne in mind when the relevant section of code is reviewed
again.

I have now noticed that, although the subsequent play queue cannot be activated

[Bug 313159] Re: [Intrepid, Jaunty] Play queue only works once and then 'freezes'

2009-01-05 Thread Chris Schoonbee
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 150394 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/150394

Pedro, thank you for responding to my bug report.

However, I think that you are wrong in considering this to be a
duplicate of bug #150394. If you read my first comment above, I
specifically discussed that bug report - please read it again. You will
see that although I think that bug is related, it is NOT a duplicate.
That bug described a different behaviour - the player would continue
playing the first song on the list when the play queue was done. As I
said in my comment, this behaviour no longer seems to occur, at least
for me.

Even if it does still occur, my bug report describes a different
behaviour - the player stops playing when the play queue is done and
will not play a second queue when the play button is pressed. Can you
see that there is a difference?

*So please unmark this bug as a duplicate.* I could do it myself, but I
would prefer that you relooked at my whole bug report to satisfy
yourself that this is not a duplicate.

However, as I mentioned above, I think that the code change that fixed
bug #150394 may have caused this new bug because they seem likely to
involve the same section of code. What do you think of that
possibility?

[Bug 313159] Re: [Intrepid, Jaunty] Play queue only works once and then 'freezes'

2009-01-02 Thread Chris Schoonbee
Confirmation of problem

I confirmed that the problem behaviour also occurs in Fedora 10 which also uses
Rhythmbox 0.11.6 but I cannot find a corresponding Fedora bug report. This
would nevertheless seem to confirm that it is an upstream bug.

I also described the bug on my local Ubuntu mailing list. Two people
confirmed the bug on their Ubuntu 8.10 systems and no-one gave a
contrary experience (ie where they did not see the problem behaviour).

A small oops: I mentioned the url of the upstream bug possibly
associated with the origin of this bug and this was automatically added
as a remote bug watch. But please bear in mind that this is not the
actual upstream bug associated with this current bug report. I don't
know whether an upstream bug actually exists yet or not.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: rhythmbox

  Problem versions:
  ---
Rhythmbox 0.11.6 (apt-cache policy gives Installed:
0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.2)
  Ubuntu 8.10, Jaunty Alpha-2

Regression behaviour (and possible clue to the bug's origin)
  --
Problem does not occur in Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 (Rhythmbox 0.11.5) so this is a
-regression-.
- However, there was a different problem (I will give more details in a
comment) with this version and I am now thinking that perhaps the fix for that
problem ended up creating this new bug. This is just idle speculation on my
part but it may be just also be a clue.

comment) with this version and I am now thinking that perhaps the fix for that
problem ended up creating this new bug.

This is the expected (correct) behaviour so far.
  Results of this step:
Although you can press and unpress the Play button, the song is not
played. This is the main unexpected behaviour symptom of this bug report. I
would expect that the new queue can be played just like the first one.

[Bug 313159] Re: [Intrepid, Jaunty] Play queue only works once and then 'freezes'

2009-01-02 Thread Chris Schoonbee
More details on speculation as to origin of bug referred to in description.
--

Rhythmbox 0.11.5 as in Ubuntu 8.04 displayed the unexpected behaviour described
in a previous bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/150394

An example of the unexpected behaviour: You opened an audio CD with
Rhythmbox and selected a few songs for your play queue and played the
queue. Once the queue had been finished, the program would continue to
play songs on the CD from the beginning instead of stopping.

This bug report was linked to the upstream bug
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=549410

This behaviour no longer appears to occur in Rhythmbox 0.11.6 so it
seems that something was changed upstream to affect or fix it although I
cannot find any details.

Since the point of occurrence of this old (fixed?) behaviour and the new
unexpected behaviour described in this current bug report is the same,
viz. what happens after the play queue is finished, this may be a clue
as to which region of code to investigate.

** Also affects: rhythmbox (Fedora)

   Status: New

[Bug 313159] [NEW] [Intrepid, Jaunty] Play queue only works once and then 'freezes'

2009-01-02 Thread Chris Schoonbee
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Problem versions:
---
Rhythmbox 0.11.6 (apt-cache policy gives Installed:
0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.2)
Ubuntu 8.10, Jaunty Alpha-2

Regression behaviour (and possible clue to the bug's origin)

Problem does not occur in Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 (Rhythmbox 0.11.5) so this is a
-regression-.
However, there was a different problem (I will give more details in a comment)
with this version and I am now thinking that perhaps the fix for that problem
ended up creating this new bug. This is just idle speculation on my part but
it may be just also be a clue.

(Highlight Play Queue in left sidebar and then click on the

This is the expected (correct) behaviour so far.
Results of this step:
Although you can press and unpress the Play button, the song is not played.
This is the main unexpected behaviour symptom of this bug report. I would
expect that the new queue can be played just like the first one.
