[Bug 1579501] Re: graphics distorted, lightdm restarting
I think I can now reliably produce this bug: Install Ubuntu on a System with official NVidia-Drivers whith the graphics older than G80 and system becomes unstable as written above. Tested on: 1. Core2 with Geforce 7600 2. Pentium M with Geforce 6400M 3. Pentium 4 with Geforce 6800 AGP 4. Athlon X2 with Geforce 6600 A short test on the Core2 and Pentium4 with a Geforce 640 showed the problem is related to the old graphic board. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1579501 Title: graphics distorted, lightdm restarting To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-304-updates/+bug/1579501/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1424013] Re: Compiz high CPU and UI freeze on NVIDIA after fix for #269904 in trusty-updates
I need to correct my last statement, enable-x11-sync false does NOT fix all problems. It merelly makes the system a lot more stable but it still displays often graphical distortions and such. I opened a seperate bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics- drivers-304-updates/+bug/1579501 with more details and logs. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1424013 Title: Compiz high CPU and UI freeze on NVIDIA after fix for #269904 in trusty-updates To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/1424013/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1579501] Re: graphics distorted, lightdm restarting
Now I am in a Catch 22 situation: By using the propietary drivers I get instability and display errors. By using Nouveau I can not start Steam due other libGL errors (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/steam/+bug/1527669 - the workaround is only viable for official drivers, nouveau is totally useless with steam) Overall there isn't any meaningful setup to use Ubuntu for me right now.

[Bug 1579501] [NEW] graphics distorted, lightdm restarting
Public bug reported: The system was running ubuntu 12.04 without any problems, quite fast and definitly worth keeping, I was able to play 3D games at decent quality while using official nvidia drivers. Overall a pretty stable system based on an Intel 965 Chipset and a Geforce 7600. I did a clean install of 16.04 and added nvidia-graphics- drivers-304-updates. At first the system was horribly unstable, displayed garbage at the slighted GPU load, even starting frozen bubble in full screen made lightdm restart. After using "dconf write /org/compiz/profiles/unity/plugins/opengl/enable-x11-sync false" the system became stable but display is still often distorted, missing picture elements, doesn't draw all elements in firefox, scrolling of firefox and terminal output is missing parts. This happens around once every minute so it is still workable but unprofessional. Happens a lot more often in Firefox than any other application. Also I have the feeling lots of stuff is working a lot slower than it did in 12.04, e.g. starting frozen bubble in full screen takes a lot longer than earlier. I think this error is somewhere between nvidia drivers, compiz and firefox. [Bug 1424013] Re: Compiz high CPU and UI freeze on NVIDIA after fix for #269904 in trusty-updates
The bug is back at 16.04 32bit with a slight variation: relates also to dedicated GPUs, normal desktop works somewhat slow but normal, changing resolution or inflicting high video load makes compiz and therefore X11/lightdm crash/blackscreen/restart lightdm (eg starting frozen bubble in full screen will restat lightdm). Using dconf write /org/compiz/profiles/unity/plugins/opengl/enable-x11-sync false fixes all problems. [Bug 1478873] [NEW] Odd behaviour in some applications
Public bug reported: Earlier today I installed linux-headers-3.13.0-59 linux-headers-3.13.0-59-generic linux-image-3.13.0-59-generic linux-image-extra-3.13.0-59-generic and after that some applications, most notably steam, started to behave strange, e.g. in steam installed software was invisible and the application install dialog stated Disk Space Available: 0 Counter checks by booting some older kernels (48 to 58) fixed that behaviour. A very quick cross check with another system seem to prove this observation. I do an educated guess: my steam is sitting on /archive/steam so I can share it over network and local users. /archive is a soft link to /home/archive coz I often move this one around a lot. I have the odd feeling kernel -59 is having issues with soft links and/or steam is handling soft links in a weird way which broke with -59. All other software affected is somehow connected to soft links, be it a small readlink from bash or postgresql. Sorry for being a bit vague right now, more details after I return from work and have time to experiment with avoiding soft links while using my affected applications. [Bug 1478873] Re: Odd behaviour in some applications
I have eliminated some symptoms in other applications but the steam problem continues. More details about my installation: I installed Steam in /archive/steam, chown root:users and chmod 2770. /archive is a soft link to /home/archive. Steam itself starts normally but the Library does not show any games. Surving the Web and Shop through Steam browser also fails. When trying to install a game the installer does not list the default installation location /archive/steam/steamapps but other Partitions I never used for steam like /steam, /var/steam, /home/steam. Also it does display Disk space available: 0. Installation obviously fails because of access rights and available space. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1478873 Title: Odd behaviour in some applications To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1478873/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 972077] Re: apt repository disk format has race conditions
Just some rough observations, I am using a visible Proxy configures through /etc/apt/ and also HTTP_PROXY running on http://proxy:3128/; since the early 1990ths. The Hash mismatch rarelly happened to me until I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 and since then I have it a lot on de.archive.ubuntu.com but still rarelly on eu/gb/nl mirrors. On most mirrors a quick fix is to clean /var/lib/apt/, /var/cache/squid and so on but on de mirror this seems to do nothing until the bug simply disappears after some days even without any interception from me. I have the odd feeling that the de mirror is just exceptional erratic. Why am I using a caching proxy? Because it speeds up updating and installing while using multiple clients (once had more than 100 after one 2MBit line, right now still five). There is little need to cache lists, indexes, hashes, keys and so on, I am only interested in caching the deb Files so maybe there is some workaround to ease the strain on the proxy? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/972077 Title: apt repository disk format has race conditions To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/maas/+bug/972077/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1389904] Re: With the recent update to xserver-xorg-video-intel, system boots to a black screen
My problem with my i810 seems to be the same and the crude fix of reinstalling the old version through sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg- video-intel=2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1 and pinning it with sudo apt-mark hold xserver-xorg-video-intel=2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1 is working. Let me tell you some background and guesswork why we have this problem. Because I haven't taken notes and the i810 computer is not at hands I might sound a bit fuzzy... X11 itself is not enough for modern video output. You also need DRI, GLX, MESA and others which are usually seperate from X11 and X11 low level drivers but are still pretty low level themselves. Starting with Ubuntu 14.04 the official DRI/GLX-drivers no longer support i810 (maybe this problem is older but 12.04 definitly does not have the problem, not sure if GLX or DRI, either libgl1-mesa-dri or libgl1-mesa-glx) . This in return means you get no MESA/OpenGL and no accelerated video. This is an Upstream-Decision outside Ubuntu and I was unable to find any explanaition for this though it was hinted that a lack for DRI/GLX means that i810 support itself might not live for much longer in Xorg. So I guess now is the time where i810 not only loses OpenGL and accelerated video upstream but is completely dropped from Xorg. Things look hopeless, already when i810-GLX/DRI got dropped upstream sounded totally uninterested in fixing it. Basically they suggested to compile your drivers manually based on older sources. And they sounded absolutely final on not fixing GLX/DRI. This is a real pitty because I have several of these old, quiet, small computers with i810 around and they worked perfectly good with 10.04. I can only hope someone has the time to do a PPA with working DRI/GLX /Xorg-Intel810. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1389904 Title: With the recent update to xserver-xorg-video-intel, system boots to a black screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1389904/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
Most people do not care what Operating System they are using as long as it is the same they used before. Honestly, I have some customers who stifly refuse to abandon Windows98SE and Outlook 2000 and which are eager to discuss every single change of a button as an ultimate reason for not changing their OS, no matter the alternatives. These people are obviously unable to rationalize their own needs. [Bug 569900] Re: partman sometimes creates partitions such that there is ambiguity between whether the superblock is on the disk device or the partition device
There are other way to get this bug too and it will haunt us back in the future and not only within Ubuntu It hit me when partitionising with fdisk -u /dev/sdx but not with fdisk /dev/sdx because the first fits tightly to the end of the drive, the second leaves some space. The same happened when using GPT through cfdisk (not sure, its been a while). All in all it shouldn't be wrong to use a tightly fitting partition table. The real problem here is that a 0.9 superblock can not be reliably source to either a device or a partition (or a LVM, actually I can imagine scenarios where its not only about drive or partition but in addition about other mappings like LVM, crypt, hey, even a stupidily placed part of a filesystem could qualify as a superblock). Until now it worked because scanning for superblock accidentially used a less error prone sequence for scanning (in fact even then the scanning usually ran head first into a wall but accidentially this didn't get through to the user) In short: Placing vital information at the end of a bunch of sectors and hoping for a successful poking-around by the startup is stupid and prone for error. Everyone should use front-aligned superblocks, that is version 1.1 and/or 1.2 because every known mapping (LVM, MD, Crypt, filesystems) are able to preserve lead-in-gaps and deliver this vital information to the next layer. Not so for for lead-out-gaps. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/569900 Title: partman sometimes creates partitions such that there is ambiguity between whether the superblock is on the disk device or the partition device -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 46076] Re: pbm2g3
This is most likely not a bug, this is intended by design. pbm2g3-output sendfaxing through an USR V.everything works perfectly for me. The mgetty-pbm2g3 is different from netpbm-pbmtog3 because there are only some resolutions making sense when preparing data for sendfax. See man pbm2g3 for more: -w page width sets the width of the resulting G3 page. Default is 1728. If you want to be able to fax it with sendfax, don’t use anything else. For other fax programs, 2048, 2432, 864 and 1216 may be useful. For other purposes, use what you like. Most likely the init-string for your modem is wrong, resulting in an excedingly high or low resolution. See the sendfax-manual about initializing your modem in /etc/inittab ** Changed in: mgetty (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Christian Brandt Status: Unconfirmed = In Progress -- pbm2g3 https://launchpad.net/bugs/46076 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 75058] faxrunqd hangs on /etc/init.d/mgetty-fax stop
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mgetty-fax faxrunqd hangs on /etc/init.d/mgetty-fax stop until the 60 second timeout is reached, most likely the line --retry -HUP/60/-TERM is the culprit. Most likely this is due a change in the handling of SIGHUP (see changes.debian.gz), this signal now does a graceful restart. By changing the line to --retry -INT/5/-TERM faxrunqd shuts down much nicer - obviously faxrunqd already has special handling to SIGINT so this is isn't as brutish as it looks on first sight. Also I lowered the timeout because the fax will get resend after next start of faxrunqd anyway. I did some guesses about behaviour of faxrunqd because it is a bit late and the fix seems smart enough. Hopefully they are educated guesses, please doublecheck. ** Affects: mgetty (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- faxrunqd hangs on /etc/init.d/mgetty-fax stop https://launchpad.net/bugs/75058 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
