[Bug 1488254] Re: clang++ no longer ABI-compatible with g++

2016-07-05 Thread Christian Convey
Hi guys,

Anyone know when we might see this fix make it into Ubuntu 16.04's
official repos? I'm doing some app development that's hindered by this
bug.

(If there's a better forum for this question, I'd be grateful for a
redirect.)

Thanks very much,
Christian

Re: [Bug 1059655] Re: 1002:94a3 fglrx doesn't support ATI FirePro M7740 chip

2012-11-02 Thread Christian Convey
After purging the old PPA, and setting up Nick Andrick's PPA, I tried
installing the fglrx-installer package. However, no such package
was available. So I guessed and installed the fglrx package. The
installation went smoothly, but upon rebooting my system, I don't
think Nick's package's driver is in effect. I have no AMD
Unsupported hardware watermark on my screen, and the output from
running glxinfo suggests I have no OpenGL functionality.

Next, I uninstalled the fglrx package, and installed
fglrx-updates, version 2:9.010-0ubuntu1~andrik5. Upon rebooting, I
had the same experience as I got with the fglrx package, as
described above.

Please note that the WORKAROUND of using the
https://launchpad.net/~makson96/+archive/fglrx PPA is imperfect,
because it places the AMD Unsupported hardware watermark on the
bottom-right corner of the screen.

I don't presently have Precise installed, but I'm near 100% that the
installer did NOT work under Precise.

When I used the official Ubuntu GUI for closed-source drivers, I would
be told the installation failed, although no reason was given to me.

When I used the AMD-provided installer scripts, IIRC the later
versions of those scripts installed, but then when I ran aticonfig
--initial I was told that no supported cards were detected.

In fact, I'm currently running the driver provided by the
fglrx-legacy package in someone's PPA, and while accelerated video
is working (glxinfo produces copious, happy output), I have the AMD
Unsupported hardware watermark in the bottom-left corner of my
screen.

It sounds like you're in the same boat that I am. Basically, ATI
decided that any Radeon product with a chip numbered 4xxx is too old
to be worth supporting any more. ATI has written you off.

Is there anything I can do to regain use of my pc except reinstall the

This is because ATI was not good about covering laptop-vendor-specific
chips in their driver documentation. Consulting historical documents

Not sure. I'm not that well versed on the intricacies of the X
server and/or the linux kernel.

I think it would take someone from AMD to say whether or not their
newest driver REALLY needs version 11 of the ABI, or if versions 12/13
are actually okay as well.

On Thu, Oct 4, 2012 at 11:56 AM, Raymond Wells rfw...@gmail.com wrote:
 According to: http://www.x.org/wiki/XorgModuleABIVersions

Modules reporting they require a incompatible version number will not
be loaded unless the -ignoreABI option is used. (Modules can also check
ABI versions themselves, and choose which function variant to call or
structure variant to access, based on the reported versions - this is
the option used by some closed source drivers for instance.)

In light of this, would it be possible to somehow force the correct ABI
version with the new XServer legacy fglrx driver?

[Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer does not support HD2000-4000 legacy cards

2012-10-02 Thread Christian Convey
I'm going to add a comment to help people Googling this issue. The ATI
Mobility M7740 chip, which was one option for the Dell M6500 Mobile
Precision laptop, is apparently considered a 4000-series chip, and so is
a victim of this AMD policy.

One of the supposed justifications for over-priced workstation-class
graphics chips was top-notch vendor support. By so cutting short its
support of this chip, AMD has demonstrated that they can't be trusted to
support workstation-level users.

Unless something radically changes, I can't see buy AMD for my Linux
laptops / desktops anymore. What a shame.

[Bug 1059655] [NEW] fglrx doesn't support ATI FirePro M7740 chip?

2012-10-01 Thread Christian Convey
Public bug reported:

The fgrlx package now installs successfully for me. However, I
believe it's not recognizing my chip, the ATI FirePro M7740. This is
the chip that Dell uses in the Precision M6500 laptop from about 3 years
ago.

I have a few reasons for thinking fglrx isn't doing its job for this
chip:

(1) When I run fglrxinfo, I get the following output:

[Bug 1054992] [NEW] fglrx package has unmet dependency

2012-09-23 Thread Christian Convey
Public bug reported:

First, let me note that the fglrx-installer package doesn't appear in
the repositories (default) that I'm using, so I assume that I'm supposed
to just install the fglrx package directly.

When I try to install the closed-source AMD driver for my laptop
graphics chip (AMD FirePro M7740), I get the following:

cjc@awesome:~$ sudo aptitude install fglrx
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  fglrx{b}
The following packages are RECOMMENDED but will NOT be installed:
  fglrx-amdcccle
0 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 66.0 MB of archives. After unpacking 207 MB will be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
fglrx : Depends: xorg-video-abi-11 which is a virtual package.
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

Keep the following packages at their current version:
1) fglrx [Not Installed]

[Bug 1051362] [NEW] fglrx (not installed): fglrx kernel module failed to build

2012-09-15 Thread Christian Convey
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 12.10 beta, up to date as of 2012-09-15, 2 pm U.S.
Eastern time.

Uname output: Linux awesome 3.5.0-14-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 14
20:21:51 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

My graphics chip is this (from lspci):
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI M97 GL
[ATI FirePro M7740]

Open-source graphics drive working okay, but I wanted to use the
Catalyst driver. So I downloaded amd-driver-
installer-8.982-x86.x86_64.run from AMD's website, and used it to build
Ubuntu/quantal debian packages. That went okay, so I installed them
using sudo dpkg -i *.deb in the directory containing the packages.

I got the following output from that dpkg invocation:

cjc@awesome:~/packages/x$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Never mind - those symlinks do exist. I don't know why we're seeing
this.

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would

[Bug 581961] [NEW] Regression: no Intel 5300 AGN on 2.6.32-22 kernel

2010-05-17 Thread Christian Convey
Public bug reported:

I'm using 10.04 64-bit on a laptop with an Intel 5300 AGN wifi adapter.

If I boot into the following kernel, I have Wifi (at least usually);
Linux awesome 2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:09:38 UTC 2010
x86_64 GNU/Linux

However, if I boot into the most recent kernel (2.6.32-22), I get no
wifi at all. The wifi light above my keyboard doesn't light, and the
Network Manager Applet shows no wifi adapter being present.

Note: the attached files are from when I booted into a 2.6.32-21 kernel,
not the problematic 2.6.32-22 kernel.

[Bug 376994] [NEW] Inconsistent package name for opt package.

2009-05-15 Thread Christian Convey
Public bug reported:

The opt package provides the file, /usr/lib/libopt.a.

So by Debian / Ubuntu naming conventions, shouldn't the package be named
libopt-dev ?

I'm seeing this in Ubuntu 9.04. The package version of opt is
3.19-1.1.

Yes.  Unless you are comfortable manually configuring -nvidia in
xorg.conf, you may want to wait until the driver appears in Hardware
Drivers, since that takes care of configuring it for your hw.  Otherwise
you need to know about setting DefaultDepth to 24, yada yada...

2009-03-17 Thread Christian Convey
Fwiw, I've uploaded the final 6.12.0 today.  I re-tested this on an
hd4850 but did not find the whitescreen issue gone.

Can you two please update to today's latest (with -ati 6.12.0) and
verify the white issue is still gone?  If it has regressed please re-
open this bug so I can explore further.

I've just updated, and the issue remains fixed for me.

I also have a new -fglrx 8.60 which I've tested on the same card, and
 found it works great.

Isn't fglrx our packaging of the ATI Catalyst driver? If so, how can
that work? I thought that hadn't yet released a Catalyst that's
compatible with Xserver 1.6?

I guess in the worst-case scenario I can wait for the proprietary

[Bug 325394] Re: [RV770 HD 4850] ATI Radeon HD 4850 not supported - white screen and system freeze

2009-02-27 Thread Christian Convey
I just tried the 9.04 alpha5 live environment, with my HD 8450 card. I
still get the white screen of death, but now I can switch virtual
terminals, so at least I can now access a shell.

Thanks to that new-found ability, I was able to access various files of
interest. I'm attaching them to this report.

The usual technique is to boot into recovery/failsafe mode, set up the

However, you've got an r700 card, and the support for that is still
quite new and fairly incomplete, so probably you should just wait on
further testing until we have a new version of the driver with better
support for your card. Meanwhile, you could try -radeonhd.

[Bug 314897] Re: White screen of death - no escape

2009-01-27 Thread Christian Convey
Okay, I tried to reproduce the bug more carefully, so I can give a
better report. Here are the details:

I downloaded the 9.04 (alpha3) AMD64 live desktop CD. I booted from it,
using it as a live CD.

I ended up with a plain white screen. Hitting ctrl-alt-backspace had no
visible effect.

When I tried to switch to a virtual terminal using ctrl-F1, ctrl-F2,
etc., the screen when from all white to all black, and my monitor (the
actual monitor) overlaid a message indicating that it's in 1920x1200
resolution. This is the only time I've ever seen my monitor bother to
tell me that, and I don't know why it was doing it this time.

Hitting ctrl-F7 brings me back to the all-white screen.

I cannot give you and xorg.conf or xorg.0.log files, because this is a
Live environment, which leaves no history on the hard drive and cannot
be SSH'ed into.

[Bug 314897] [NEW] White screen of death - no escape

2009-01-07 Thread Christian Convey
Public bug reported:

I've got a card based on an ATI Radion HD 4850 chip. I burned today's
live CD of Intrepid Ibex (386 Desktop), and used it to install the OS
onto the HDD.

When GDM should come up, I get a white screen. Hitting ctrl-alt-F1
makes the screen go black, but no text comes up.

I do however hear the sound associated with GDM coming up.

[Bug 314897] Re: White screen of death - no escape

2009-01-07 Thread Christian Convey
I made a little progress. I downloaded ATI's proprietary driver
(version 8.561), and installed it from single-user mode.

When I next booted, X didn't show me the white screen, but instead
showed me a dialog box (grey on a black background) stating that there
were problems with starting X, and it gave me several options. I think
they included reconfiguring X, starting in low-graphics mode, and one
other.

Anyway, I believe I started in low-graphics mode, just so I could log
into my deskop. Then I went to the restricted drivers gui. It showed
me a proprietary ATI driver being available, so I selected that. I was
hoping that it would give me better luck than my manual installation of
an ATI driver, mentioned at the beginning of this comment.

Sadly, when I rebooted, I got the same experience: the X dialog giving
me a few options of how to deal with its inability to start.

[Bug 292446] [NEW] Pages clipped on HP OfficeJet Pro L7680 for KDE apps

2008-11-01 Thread Christian Convey
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10. My printer is an HP OfficeJet Pro L7680.

I did a clean install of Ubuntu, and added the printer via System -
Administration - Printing. I used the recommended driver: HP
Officejet Pro l7600 Foomatic/hpijs, hpijs 2.8.7

When I printed the test page from the printer's Printer Properties
dialog, the page looked perfect.

When I print out a text file from gedit, the output looks perfect. When
I print a web page from Firefox, the output looks perfect.

But the two KDE apps I tried to print with: Kate (for a text file) and
Konqueror, both produced printed pages with the top bit of text clipped
off. It's as though KDE apps somehow end up with the wrong top margin
on the printer.

I tried correcting this problem for Kate. When I printed a text file,
in Kate's Print dialog box I clicked on the Properties button next to
the printer name. There I increased the top page margin from 0.12
inches to (arbitrarily) 0.42 inches. That resulted a good-looking
printout.

[Bug 219892] Re: Unable to create shares

2008-04-20 Thread Christian Convey
I just ran into this also, but I think I know the problem (mostly):

When you first try to share a folder, it offers to install SAMBA. You
accept, and it installs SAMBA, and also makes you a member of the group
sambashare. However, until you re-login, your not considered really
to be a member of the sambashare group. So the real issue here is
that you have to log out and back in again before you can share a
folder. But a related bug is that the user isn't told about this issue,
and instead gets a slightly cryptic error message.

[Bug 208229] [NEW] gutsy-hardy upgrade: didn't install (needed) linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-12-386

2008-03-28 Thread Christian Convey
Public bug reported:

I had a perfectly functional Gutsy system. When the Hardy beta release
came out, I did an in-place dist upgrade. Everything worked except for
the sound.

'alsamixer' and Gnome's Volume Applet (2.22.0) gave messages to the
effect that there was no sound device or gstreamer plugin, respectively.

I eventually realized that snd-hda-intel.ko wasn't on my filesystem Or more
accurately, only the old one, for Gutsy, was installed:
   ./2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel

I had to manually install the package linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-12-386 in
order to have the file:
   /lib/modules/2.6.24-12-386/ubuntu/sound/alsa-driver/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko
I was then able to successfully modprobe snd-hda-intel, and my system had all
expected sound functionality right away.

uname -a yields:

[Bug 185378] Printing duplex on HP-L7680 clips top of page

2008-01-23 Thread Christian Convey
Public bug reported:

I've got an HP-L7680 all-in-one that's sitting on my LAN.

I have a particular PDF (my W-2 form, so unfortunately I can't provide a
copy) that has this problem: When I print it in duplex, the top of the
document (less than 1/4, I think) is absent. When I print in one-sided
mode, the top is present.

I get this problem with KPDF (0.5.8), Adobe Reader 8.1.1, and Evince
(2.20.1). In KPDF I tried adjusting the printer margins, but that
didn't seem to help.

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10, cupsys 1.3.2-1ubuntu7.5, hplip
2.7.7.dfsg.1-0ubuntu5, and hpijs 2.7.7+2.7.7.dfsg.1-0ubuntu5.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Thanks,
Christian

Still broken with Hardy Heron Alpha2.

On the bright side, this was reported 2 years ago, so if we just wait
another 3 years or so, all the laptops with this bug should be out of
service.

[Bug 146306] Re: Kate can't insert newline character before first character in file

2007-09-28 Thread Christian Convey
Correction: The newline is added to the file, but there's an odd GUI
effect:

Normally when you press Enter, your cursor moves one row down, visually.
In this case, the cursor stays on the same screen position it was
before. The only visual indication you get that you pressed Enter at
all is that the scrollbar adjusts, indicating that you're no longer
looking at the top of the file.

[Bug 146306] Kate can't insert newline character before first character in file

2007-09-28 Thread Christian Convey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kate

I'm using Gutsy and Kate 2.5.7 (part of KDE 3.5.7).

Create a new file in Kate, and paste some text into the buffer.

Now position the cursor at the beginning of the file, and press the
Enter key. Nothing happens.

That action *should* insert a newline before the text you previously
pasted.

[Bug 75135] Re: installation fails due to tty error

2007-07-02 Thread Christian Convey
My path to success:

I'm having this problem with an old-ish Dell Optiplex SX260.

To get around this, I booted from the standard Feisty live CD. At the
boot menu I chose the option (the 3rd one?) that says to an install with
an updated driver CD. When I was prompted to put in the driver CD, I
just left the Feisty live CD in and hit enter. Then I was prompted for
the Ubuntu live CD, and once again (with the live CD still in the drive)
I just hit enter. This procedure got me to the live CD's Gnome desktop.

The first time I clicked on the Install icon on the desktop, the
manual partition editor hung on me. I killed it from the command-line,
and repeated the process. This second time I had no problem with
partitioning. I've completed the install, and booted the newly
installed Feisty from the hard drive, and everything seems to work fine!

Re: [Bug 94293] Re: (Feisty) Firefox requires manual JRE install

2007-06-19 Thread Christian Convey
OK, so the Ubuntu user experience has a problem. The version of
Firefox installed in Ubuntu lead the user (me) through a series of
steps that we know don't work on Ubuntu, and there was no direction
given for what the Ubuntu-blessed way is to get JRE installed.

I have no problem with installing jre via apt rather than Firefox's
installer. My real issue is that from a usability perspective,
Firefox takes the user down a fruitless path to resolve the issue.

My concern is that we just shrug our shoulders, call this an upstream
problem, and close the bug, then we're basically punting on Ubuntu's
goal of being really easy to use for everyone.

[Bug 112391] some apps print in landscape, and badly

2007-05-04 Thread Christian Convey
Public bug reported:

Printing worked just fine under Edgy for me. I did a clean install in
Feisty, and here's what I get:

When I print a document using Acroread 7.0 or Firefox, each page is
printed in an invalid mix of landscape and portrait. Here's what I mean:

*  *
++
+ * +
+ * +
++
*  *

Suppose that the asterisks outline where the content would appear on a
regular, lportrait-oriented page. The plus signs indicate the outline
of the actual paper that the content gets printed on. So when a page is
fully printed (supposedly in portrait-orientation) I see the text
rotated 90 degrees, and the text from the top and bottom is missing
because it ran off the top/bottom of the paper.

I see this only with some apps: Firefox, Acrobat Reader 7.0. I don't
see this problem with Evince, or OO.org Writer. KPDF gets the
orientation right, but does have a less severe issue with improperly
scaling and cropping the page. The test page that I get from the System
- Administration - Printing dialog is perfect in every detail.

My printer is a HP Desktjet 6540, and I'm using the hpijs Deskjet 6540
driver.
