[Bug 1006898] Re: [SRU] dnsmasq fails at leasing issues when using vlan mode

2021-10-18 Thread Christian Parpart
Many thanks Chris.

I just felt triggered by this closing because I remember how much pain
this bug caused me while working in a data center back in the days. :)

[Bug 1251839] [NEW] package libvirt-bin 1.1.1-0ubuntu8.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2013-11-16 Thread Christian Parpart
Public bug reported:

I just want to have virt-manager + libvirt running.

it seems like /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf doesn't exist (the folder does).
but reinstalling libvirt doesn't fix that either.

Interestingly my laptop's 13.10 works just fine, however, this 13.10
install here was a clean install too (no upgrade).

I am also running in this problem, and _netdev didn't fix it, and as the
other guy said, right after booting, doing a `mount -a` mounts the /home
just fine.

2012-12-06 Thread Christian Parpart
I did run `apport-collect 1087466` on the node in question, added my
personal LP account data it requested, and it then did show me an error
message like No packages found matching linux., unfortunately.

The trace above is not just in the dmesg output but also logged in
/var/log/messages. What is `apport-cli $NR` supposed to do?

[Bug 1061665] Re: Filter scheduler not respecting the force_hosts hint

2012-11-17 Thread Christian Parpart
so what is the actual syntax for OpenStack Essex?
I also did not find anything in the docs (maybe I am blind) that you can
specify a hostname as part of the availability zone's name.

[Bug 997978] Re: KVM images lose connectivity with bridged network

2012-07-03 Thread Christian Parpart
Stephane, ya, as a workaround (not to say: the better way), modprobe'ing
vhost_net driver before actually starting the VMs works perfect. no
incidents since 4 days now (tested on 30+ VMs).

But is your driver-tag for? I did not need to do that, my libvirt-bin
added the vhost=on parameter to qemu-kvm automatically - so what do I
need this line for then?

Regards,
Christian.

[Bug 997978] Re: KVM images lose connectivity with bridged network

2012-06-25 Thread Christian Parpart
I am having the same issue, and gave an in-depth inspection in my
report: bug 1016848

I am running version Essex 2012.1, and networking in VlanManager mode, a
dedicated nova-network gateway, KVM and virt-type, Ubuntu 12.04 Precise,
and run into this incident in up to every 1-2 days, yesterday even twice
within 3 hours.

One symptom may be high networking traffic I/O on the given KVM
instance.

Until now, I worked around by `nova reboot $instance_name`.

bradleyd (bradleydsmith), what exactly did you mean by ifdown ifup?
the vnet%d interface or the bridge (e.g. br100) ? What interface did you
re-up? -- for the mean time, I'd like to write a tiny daemon that runs
on the hypervisor nodes, to check every N secs whether or not it can
PING the KVM, and if not, it is to re-up its underlying network
interface.

Serge Hallyn, I'd like to assist in whatever you need to get this beast
fixed, since for me this is also a very major incident, too, and I just
can't add more production services until knowing the OpenStack-stack is
functioning well. So please tell me what I can provide you with. :-)

Regards,
Christian.

[Bug 1016848] [NEW] KVM instance stops communicating after some time

2012-06-23 Thread Christian Parpart
Public bug reported:

I am running a single nova-network node as gateway, and have about 20
KVM instances spreaded over 4 compute nodes (one of them is also
controller node), and everything is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

From time to time one or another instance WILL loose connectivity, that
is, it still has its IP address (dhcp lease times raised up to 7 days)
but still, no communication back nor forth is possible.

This pretty much looks like some kind of networking problem, but what
exactly stopped working?

I connected to the failing KVM instance via VNC, and checked its
interface, which looks pretty normal (like the others, working ones)

On the hypervisor, I am having the following state:

[Bug 1006898] Re: [SRU] dnsmasq fails at leasing issues when using vlan mode

2012-06-19 Thread Christian Parpart
Hey,

sorry, with most I meant the documentation recommends using
VlanManager (that is, VLAN mode) for networking.

Although, you cannot rely on such a behaviour, IMHO, because it
absolutely makes no sense to let hosts (that send a DHCPREQUEST) not
receive their DHCPACK.

[Bug 1006898] Re: [SRU] dnsmasq fails at leasing issues when using vlan mode

2012-06-19 Thread Christian Parpart
Could this be more safely worked-around in openstack?

forgot to comment on this one, well, I am no OpenStack expert, however,
OpenStack nova-network relies on dnsmasq for propagating IP addresses
via DHCP to their (KVM/...) instances, and OpenStack supports simple
networking (w/o VLAN) and VLAN-networking, and thus, I don't see how
OpenStack could work around this except using a different software than
dnsmasq (something that actually works) - or don't use VLAN at all.

[Bug 1013529] [NEW] dnsmasq 2.61 cause problems with dhcp in single-bound VLAN interfaces

2012-06-15 Thread Christian Parpart
Public bug reported:

Hi,

please read [1][2] for detailed informations and reasons.

dnsmasq version 2.60 and below contain a bug that cause OpenStack (part of
Ubuntu) to malfunction when put into VLAN mode.
As this is the recommended setup for production use, but its dependency
(dnsmasq) has a bug to cause VM instances to fatally loose their IP address, I
would highly rate this a major issue, and request a version bump in Ubuntu
12.04 LTS.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS seems to just provide 2.59-4 in precise/universe.

Best regards,
Christian Parpart.

2012-06-15 Thread Christian Parpart
Hey,

please do not mark this as INVALID, as this is a major bug in
production environments, and since I am talking about 12.04 LTS
(Precise) this MUST be respected to get fixed.

Otherwise one might Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise not as Enterprise and would
result in not using Ubuntu in datacenters anymore.

Please bump the precise package.

Hey, thanks, and now I also found this one:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dnsmasq/+bug/1006898

which is exactly what I was talking about (interesting that I didn't
find earlier).

However, the last commenter says he's pulling it into precise next
days, but this is about 2 weeks ago. :-(

[Bug 1004774] [NEW] nova-compute won't start up after host reboot

2012-05-25 Thread Christian Parpart
Public bug reported:

in a multi-node setup, I was rebooting one compute node (having one active VM
alive),
after the hypervisor reboot, nova-compute tried to start up, but failed,
because it could
not set the MTU of the network interface br100, because this bridged virtual
interface does not exist, nor does vlan100, as both should.

I assume that the nova-compute process should be responsible for
recreating them after a reboot if they don't exist anymore (of course
they don't after a reboot).

Creating br100 and vlan100 and attaching vlan100 to br100 was a quick
workaround to actually let nova-compute be able to finally boot up the instance
again.
but the VM cannot configure its network anymore.

this behaviour is seriously reproducable.
