2021-03-21 Thread Christians
THis problem made working very troublesome and I therefore upgraded to
21.04 containing LibreOffice 7.1.2.1.. The problem has not resurfaced
for a week in the development version and I consider it solved for me.

Same issue with snap 7.0.4.2 unfortunately.

Strangely, as mentioned above: changing fractional scaling from 150% to
100% fixes the issue temporarily, even when changing back to 150%.

[Bug 1913333] Re: Calc auto-filter menu inaccessible with fractional scaling enabled

2021-02-17 Thread Christians
Tks for looking into this so quickly. Concerning your questions:

I can see the auto-filter menu but not access it - it disappears the
moment I move the mouse towards it.

There seems to be no difference whether the auto filter was created with
or without fractional scaling.

Settings -> Displays: Resolution is 3820x2160 with refresh rate 30 Hz.
The numbersare identical to what I get from my monitor->information.

It is the only monitor. The notebook display is off.

[Bug 1913333] [NEW] auto-filter menu inaccessible with fractional scaling enabled

2021-01-26 Thread Christians
Public bug reported:

PROBLEM
The auto-filter pull-down menu becomes inaccessible the very moment I move the
mouse down to access the filter menu. This happens most of the time, but not
always, when fractional scaling is not 100% on my 4K monitor. The menu remains
inaccessible for all other scaling factors but 100%.

FREQUENCY
This happens quite often, but not always, and makes working in CALC with
fractional scaling on impossible. Sometimes changing fractional scaling back to
100% and then say to 150% fixes the issue. But most of the time the only way
out is to switch the screen to 100%.

[Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%

2020-09-03 Thread Christians
Adding to my comment above I have found another issue: The pull-down
menu from Auto-Filter is not accessible to the mouse, as it vanishes
instantly. The problem disappears after having switched to multiples of
100%.

2020-08-29 Thread Christians
Wonderful: "sudo apt full-upgrade" pulled in the nvidia updates and
fractional scaling works, thank You very much everybody, this makes
working on my 4k monitor so much easier!

One small issue remains: The thumbnails of images and documents on the
desktop have wrong aspect ratios in all display scales apart from 100%,
they are too wide.

Having small thumbnails is better than having no thumbnails. To attract
a wider audience Ubuntu must have a better out-of-the box experience.

[Bug 1879488] Re: raw NEF thumbnails not processed

2020-05-20 Thread Christians
My bug https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdk-
pixbuf/-/issues/157#note_804913and was closed after a brief discussion.

Could this be fixed in Ubuntu with a post-install script? One would
expect thumbnails in nautilus to simply work. Most people won't search
the help pages and then dig into the configs and will be frustrated.

This used to work in previous Ubuntu versions, so it is a regression.

[Bug 1874856] Re: Unwanted mouse trail

2020-04-30 Thread Christians
Tested again a few times: I confirm that switching to nouveau removes
the mouse trail but slows down the desktop to unworkable.

To clarify #6: It could be that in my first test I did not reboot, although
this is quite unlikely.
I could re-install the OS if you want me to try to replicate this.

What is for sure is that the Driver's GUI [attached] has issues:
1) After switching to nouveau (and reboot) it does not highlight "nouveau", but
points to a new menu entry, "Continue using manually installed driver".
2) Options of switching drivers are greyed out after switching to Nouveau.
3) Claims that my Wifi is not working, but it works just fine.

Annother strange behaviour occurred today: The reboot after switching to
Nouveau gets stuck at every boot with

 /dev/sda6 clean, 234123/26879978 files, 4048798/11234253 blocks

Workaround is booting into recovery, then select boot from there - it
boots. This problem does disappear after switching to the proprietary
display driver.

[Bug 1874856] Re: Unwanted mouse trail

2020-04-29 Thread Christians
Mouse trail is gone with nouveau, but desktop is very very slow in all
three modes XOrg, Gnome Classic, and Ubuntu. I had to switch back to 440
to be able to work.

Switching drivers was only possible via CLI.

The mouse trail is only apparent on the background, not inside
application windows.

[Bug 1826757] Re: libreoffice in 19.04 not responding on ODT, working on ODS

2019-05-21 Thread Christians
This #14 fixes my package issues.

The issue with slow loading ODT with LO 6.2.3.2 remains and I have
submitted this follow-up
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=125426

Note that my problem is fixed when using 6.3.0.0.alpha1. When reverting
to 6.2.3.2 the issue re-occurs.

[Bug 1826757] Re: libreoffice in 19.04 not responding on ODT, working on ODS

2019-05-21 Thread Christians
Opening with LO 6.2 from the links on this page

   LoadingSlowly_onewordonly.odttakes 25secs with
one of eight CPUs maxed out.
   CpPasted_Now loading FAST_LoadingSlowly_onewordonly_.odt takes 1sec

After purging LO 6.2 and installing LO 6.3.0.0.alpha1 both docs load
like a flash. Should I still submit a bug against LO for slow loading
then?

It seems my package manager is corrupt, as described in #7, and I cannot
update the system any longer properly.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

You might want to run 'apt --fix-broken install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
 libreoffice-lightproof-en : Depends: python3-uno (>= 4.0) but it is not
installed
 Depends: libreoffice-core (>= 1:3.5~) but it is
not installed
 libreoffice-lightproof-hu : Depends: python3-uno (>= 4.0) but it is not
installed
 Depends: libreoffice-core (>= 1:3.5~) but it is
not installed
 libreoffice-lightproof-ru-ru : Depends: python3-uno (>= 4.0) but it is not
installed
Depends: libreoffice-core (>= 1:3.5~) but it is
not installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt --fix-broken install' with no packages (or
specify a solution).

BUT 'apt --fix-broken install' gets me back to LO version 6.2, which has
caused all the trouble. How can I properly clean the package manager?

Upon Marcus' advice I installed from snap, and all works great... tks
Marcus!

MInor problem: snap does not seem to allow access to /tmp, so other
things won't work any longer, for example I cannot open a DOCX mail
attachment.

2019-04-29 Thread Christians
Thank You, yes libreoffice* was the reason for my mystery extension
install...

But now I cannot remove libreoffice cleanly any longer:

   sudo apt autoremove --purge libreoffice*

Errors were encountered while processing:
 libreoffice-lightproof-en
 libreoffice-lightproof-hu
 libreoffice-lightproof-ru-ru
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

And I cannot remove the extensions on their own:

sudo apt remove libreoffice-lightproof-en libreoffice-lightproof-ru-ru
libreoffice-lightproof-hu

   find:
‘/usr/lib/libreoffice/share/extensions/lightproof_ru_RU/pythonpath’: No such
file or directory
dpkg: error processing package libreoffice-lightproof-ru-ru (--remove):

Renewed install claims they are already there:

  sudo apt remove libreoffice-lightproof-en libreoffice-lightproof-ru-ru
libreoffice-lightproof-hu
  ...
libreoffice-lightproof-ru-ru is already the newest version (0.3.4+1.6-1).

lightproof-hu does not show in the extension manager, but I have two
others, solver.. and wiki publisher, but cannot break the lock to
uninstall them.

And root gives me trouble as well

sudo libreoffice
(soffice:30900): IBUS-WARNING **: 17:34:05.008: The owner of
/home/myname/.config/ibus/bus is not root!

I had cleaned the cache with sudo apt-get clean.

[Bug 1826757] Re: libreoffice in 19.04 not responding on ODT, working on ODS

2019-04-29 Thread Christians
Tks for looking into this guys!
* libreoffice does not appear in snap list
* in Nautilus my right click shows "open with libreoffice writer"

Note that after removing .config/libreoffice opening an ODT works just
fine. The locking occurs when I close LO and try to open another ODT.

Adding to the mystery, I noticed that I have several strange extensions
installed "Bundled with LibreOffice" :
* canzely-client 0.5.1, claims to be a German assistant for lawyers and adds a
German menu to Writer
* Lightproof grammar checker (magyar), points to http://fsf.hu/
* Lightproof grammar checker (Russian)
* lots of LaTex extensions
* Zemberek Turkish Spell Checker

This is bizarre, I have never touched anything Turkish nor Russian.
I cannot remove the extensions, the lock icon only offers "update".

Note I have no other repositories installed apart from Canonical
Partners. This is all pretty crazy. Will my computer lock up and I will
have to pay ransom to Germans and Russians?

[Bug 1826757] Re: libreoffice in 19.04 not responding on ODT, working on ODS

2019-04-29 Thread Christians
I have since

* purged the 19.04 provided LO version and installed 6.2.3.2 from
https://www.libreoffice.org/download/
  sudo dpkg -i *.deb
sudo apt -y install libreoffice-base//needed for jdk

RESULT: LO is freezing

* purged 6.2.3.2 and went back to standard version

RESULT: LO is freezing

Strange things happen with the software center:
* After "sudo apt purge libreoffice*" LO still appears in the software center
and starts from CLI.
* I remove all components from the software center.
* After installing with "sudo apt install libreoffice*", LO does appear in the
store as NOT installed.

This is all is very mysterious and frustrating! What else can I test,
what log can I check?

Strange things are happening with the Ubuntu software

[Bug 1826757] [NEW] libreoffice in 19.04 not responding on ODT, working on ODS

2019-04-28 Thread Christians
Public bug reported:

Libreoffice 6.2.2.2 20(Build:2) hangs on 19.04 with "Loading document.."
on ODTs, but not on ODSs. I had no issues on 18.10.

EXPECTED: ODT file opens

WHAT HAPPENS INSTEAD:
* blank LibreOffice 6.2 window opens with brief message "Loading document.."
* when closing the window by clicking on the X a selection box with "force
quit" appear. If I click on this right away the mouse freezes. After liberating
the mouse with CTRl-ALT-DEL I can click again on force quit and kill the window.
* The problem occurs even when the hidden lock file has been removed.

TROUBLESHOOTING
* Purging libreoffice, reboot, reinstall does not help.
* At first occurrence of the issue, and starting from terminal I got "failed to
read path from javaldx", was advised to install java*
*
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1138438/libreoffice-file-locking-issues-in-19-04-no-problems-in-18-10

WORKAROUND
Remove /home/myname/.config/libreoffice. But this only works for a short while,
and removing the directory must repeated over and over again.

[Bug 1825590] [NEW] "software & updates" freezes after selecting "canonical partners¨

2019-04-19 Thread Christians
Public bug reported:

On a fresh install of 19.04, in "Software & Updates" when I select
"Canonical Partners" the window "Authentication Required" pops up. After
typing the password the mouse freezes, and can be unfrozen with
CTRL+ALT+DEL. But the "Canonical Partners" cannot be selected, check box
stays empty, mouse freezes again. Even after cold restart.

WORKAROUND
Select "Canonical Partners Sources" instead. After authorizing I can now also
select "Canonical Partners". This was impossible before.

After this I can select and deselect Canonical Partner in "Software & Updates".
The previous authorization window, which opened first, and when the mouse
froze, stays open and cannot be closed with CANCEL or ALT+F4.

[Bug 1810774] [NEW] ubuntu 18.10 installer fails for GeForce GTX 1050 when updating driver while installing

2019-01-07 Thread Christians
Public bug reported:

18.10 64 bit Ubuntu installer creates an unusable system that freezes within a
minute, or freezes instantly upon starting any graphics intensive applications
like Firefox or gnome-activities.
I have a GeForce GTX 1050.

How to reproduce:

* Install image, while enabling updates and third party software.
* Graphics freezes as described above and in
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1105037/18-10-new-install-freezes-with-intel-pipe-update-end-i915-atomic-update-fail
* The system freezes even in recovery mode, where the text is overwritten and
garbled quickly.

How to work around:

* During install disable network and disable any update of drivers and software.
* Upon restart the graphics will freeze again, but recovery options do work
this time.
* Plug in LAN cable, start in recovery mode, enable networking, then drop into
root.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-390

see https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/ubuntu-linux-install-nvidia-
driver-latest-proprietary-driver/

Now graphics will work. I then switched to using the NVIDIA driver using
"Software & Updates".

[Bug 1805794] [NEW] Thumbnails for NEF are huge, 10-15 MB

2018-11-29 Thread Christians
Public bug reported:

When I open a directory with photos of Nikon NEF format, then gnome-raw-
thumbnailers takes over most of my CPU and generates large files: A 20MB
Nikon NEF image results into a 10-18 MB thumbnail generated in PNG
format in .cache/thumbnails.

Thumbnails for NEF did not show by default in 18.10. I followed Nautilus
isn't displaying thumbnails for my NEF files (photo raw)

As a resuilt the thumbnail directory is almost as big as my Pictures
directory. How can I reduce the size of my thumbnails?

[Bug 793203] [NEW] WIreless stopped working

2011-06-05 Thread Christians
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

EeePC 1000HE, wireless worked on 10.04, but was patchy on 11.04. After
blacklisting following bug 673440 all worked for a few weeks.

But from around June 2nd the wireless icon just shows an exclamation
mark and WLAN is dead. I have followed instructions of bug 762845 and
installed kernel 2.6.39 - but wireless is still dead. This is very
frustrating.

[Bug 775137] Re: Nvidia 96 driver failed to load in 11.04 Nvidia GeForce4 MX 4000

2011-06-05 Thread Christians
A fresh install solved the problem. it therefore seems that the upgrade
from 10.10 to 11.04 has an issues, probably conflicting Python versions:

around 25/01/11 NEW 96 drivers become available and show up in

Plse let me know what required information you would need for future
reports.

Firefox had crashed on me several times with this install, and even
caused Ubuntu once causing a reboot.

Re: [Bug 305030] Re: Print PDF fails with Document Viewer, but works with ePDF

2008-12-11 Thread Christians
Dimitrios,

I can print with any other application to this NAS attached printer,
including printing the same file with Okular. I'll try tonight hooking
up the printer directly and let you know.

Yes, this bug looks a lot like http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=499759

thanks for so swiftly looking into my report.

 this looks similar:
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=499759
are you sure the smb printer doesn't need authorization?
have you checked the printer's settings?

 Bug description:

PDF document fails to print with Document Viewer 2.24.1 with

The same document prints with ePDF and Okular. Reproduceable with any PDF
file I could find. Same problem after reboot.

I am printing to a NAS attached print server. But I don't think this is
the problem because I had the same issue a month ago with Ubuntu 8.04 on a
different desktop printing to the same printer over USB cable. There are no
print restrictions set on the print server.

My problem occurs on a desktop running 8.10, 2.6.27-10-generic (#1 SMP Fri
 Nov 21 12:00:22 UTC 2008), pre-release updates, fresh install.
