[Bug 1873809] Re: Make linux-kvm bootable in LXD VMs

2020-08-25 Thread Christopher Townsend
Both the 18.04 & 16.04 Ubuntu Minimal cloud images use the kvm kernel by
default, so we need this fix applied to those kernels as well. Are
there plans for that so that we can use those Minimal images in LXD?

Oh, you have to manually downgrade the packages to what's in main now?
I guess that should be documented somewhere for those of us who are

one needs to do.

[Bug 1825710] Re: Remove "Application is ready" notification

2020-03-10 Thread Christopher Townsend
I'll add that since updating from 18.04 to 20.04, Pidgin has been doing
this very consistently. Whenever I have Pidgin focused and then switch
focus to another window, some time later, I get a notification saying:

Pidgin Internet Messenger
"#foo" is ready

where #foo is the name of the last chat tab I had focused with Pidgin.
This "new" behavior is atrocious. I'm not sure what changed in Pidgin
and/or Gnome, but this is a terrible user experience.

Also, this is related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1861006.

[Bug 1860787] Re: Suspend not working on Lenovo Carbon X1 after upgrade to 20.04

2020-01-29 Thread Christopher Townsend
Hi @p-pisati,

Yes, that is the new version. I should also add that closing the lid is
suspending the machine and opening the lid is resuming it like I would
expect.

This may be fixed by the newer kernel and/or (an)other package(s). I'm
content with the behavior now and I'm fine closing this bug.

If you'd still like me to try out the other kernel, let me know.

Thanks so much!

[Bug 1860787] Re: Suspend not working on Lenovo Carbon X1 after upgrade to 20.04

2020-01-27 Thread Christopher Townsend
I'm not sure exactly what has changed, but a new kernel did install
today and suspend/resume is working much better.

`systemctl suspend` is working as expected. However, closing the laptop
lid is not quite working yet. When I close the lid, the power stays on,
but when I open the lid, it suspends. A subsequent lid close and open
will resume the machine.

[Bug 1861006] [NEW] After upgrade to 20.04, notifications not working as expected

2020-01-27 Thread Christopher Townsend
Public bug reported:

I'm observing the following behavior after upgrading to 20.04.

1. I don't get any notifications in the Gnome notification area if my name is
highlighted in chat.
2. I also don't get notifications in private messages when someone says
something to me.
3. I also get a weird "#some_channel is ready" (where #some_channel is the name
of a particular chat tab) notification after some time. If I then focus the
Pidgin window, nothing new is in the particular tab that prompted the
notification.

Note that all of these behaviors were not observed in 18.04, my previous
version of Ubuntu.

Let me know if there is any other info I can provide.

[Bug 1860787] [NEW] Suspend not working on Lenovo Carbon X1 after upgrade to 20.04

2020-01-24 Thread Christopher Townsend
Public bug reported:

Either closing the laptop lid (via the setting in Gnome Tweak Tool) or
issuing `systemctl suspend` results in the same behavior. The screen
will go blank, yet the power will remain on and the battery will drain
slowly when off of AC power. The only way to recover is to hard power
off the system and cold boot.

I should also add that I was originally on 18.04+HWE kernel with no
issues.

issuing `systemctl suspend` results in the same behavior. The screen
will go blank, yet the power will remain on and the battery will drain
slowly when off of AC power. The only way to recover is to hard power
off the system and cold boot.
+
+ I should also add that I was originally on 18.04+HWE kernel with no
+ issues.

[Bug 1671610] Re: Dbus method isSurfaceFocused says surface is not focused after an app launches

2017-03-31 Thread Christopher Townsend
This is still not working in the latest release. And it actually seems
to be worse. I can never get an x app surface to get "True" returned
once it looses focus. isSurfaceFocused just keeps returning false even
when it's focused.

Until this is fixed, copy and paste for X apps is going to be broken.

[Bug 1675364] Re: [regression] GTK and KDE apps fail to start under Unity8 (without gnome-session running)

2017-03-29 Thread Christopher Townsend
Ok, I've traced this down to bug #1675448 being the root of the issue.
Xmir is started no matter what and if an application natively supports
Mir such as a Gtk or Qt app, then there are multiple connections to Mir,
which is what the aforementioned bug is about.

So a decision needs to be made. Either bug #1675448 needs to be fixed
or we need to revert the Gtk probing order back and just use xmir for
the time being.

The longer term solution of only starting xmir when it is actually
needed along with Mir supported toolkits probing for Mir first is the
final solution (see bug #1672931). But that won't be done in time for
the Zesty release, hence the other options presented above:)

[Bug 1675481] Re: Xmir crashes when using the '-fd' option

2017-03-24 Thread Christopher Townsend
The following diff seems to fix the crash:
http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/24242549/

I haven't committed it yet since I'm really not sure if this method is
valid or if there is a bug.

After a client connects to the X socket and Xmir is started with the fd
returned from accept(), the client just hangs. I got a backtrace of the
client, and it's blocked on xcb_connect_to_fd(). Here is a snippet of
the bt:

So it seems it's waiting on the X server to send something back, but the
X server is not. Most likely a bug in the X server...

[Bug 1675481] Re: Xmir crashes when using the '-fd' option

2017-03-23 Thread Christopher Townsend
** Description changed:

I'm trying to use the '-fd' option in Xmir and get a crash when Xmir
  starts up.

  This is what I'm doing:

  I'm using socket()/bind()/listen()/accept() on a AF_UNIX socket at
/tmp/.X11-unix/X0 (or whatever available display number). DISPLAY is
then set based on this. Then, when an X app accesses that socket, the
code then starts Xmir and passes the fd returned in the accept() call to
  Xmir in the '-fd' option.

This is what I get in journalctl when this crash occurs:
  http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/24235520/

- Also, no Xmir crash file is generated.
+ I installed the Xmir debug symbols and also passed in '-core' when
+ starting Xmir and here is the bt: http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/24236088/

[Bug 1672931] Re: [regression] Qt & GTK apps on Unity8 are defaulting to Xmir instead of native GTK/Qt (and so menus don't appear in the titlebar)

2017-03-22 Thread Christopher Townsend
This will be solved basically in two parts:

1. Xmir will only launch when it needs to. The DISPLAY env var will be set and
some method of detecting when Xmir is needed will be used. There are a couple
of ways of starting Xmir on-demand and just picking one that will work both
with deb based systems and the future Xmir snap will be key.
2. Any toolkits that support Mir will need to try use Mir first before trying
to use X. It was recently discovered that, even though Qt apps are being told
to use Mir, if Xmir is available and DISPLAY is set, it will use X which is a
bug. Also, Gtk will need to be patched to try to use Mir first.

I will work on the libertine/ubuntu-app-launch part of this to make it
so Xmir will start only when needed.

[Bug 1666472] Re: pasted crashed with SIGABRT in qt_message_fatal()

2017-03-20 Thread Christopher Townsend
After further analysis, it appears xmir is failing to start, yet pasted
is getting started and fails to find the x server and crashes.

An interim solution is to check first if the x server, ie, xmir is
running before trying to open the DISPLAY in pasted and if it's not,
fail gracefully instead of crashing.

The longer term solution is the luancher should check that Xmir starts
successfully before moving on and launching pasted and the intended
application.

[Bug 1671610] [NEW] Dbus method isSurfaceFocused says surface is not focused after an app launches

2017-03-09 Thread Christopher Townsend
Public bug reported:

I have run into a situation that after launching an app and waiting for
the app/surface to be finished starting and can visibly see that the
surface is focused, that isSurfaceFocused still returns false for the
given Mir persistent surface id.

If I click outside of the app and then back in, isSurfaceFocused returns
true for the very same Mir persistent surface id.

For example, here the gdbus output for a valid persistent surface id on the app
that is in focus:
$ gdbus call --session --dest com.canonical.Unity.FocusInfo --object-path
/com/canonical/Unity/FocusInfo --method
com.canonical.Unity.FocusInfo.isSurfaceFocused
"780fc686-52e7-43e6-a74f-01c44a0882b7"
(false,)
