Re: [Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-04-20 Thread Claudiu Vlad
I chose the always show option and I am quite happy with it.

All maximized windows dont go under or over panel so the panel is really
OK.

Try it yourself,

Cheers,

personally, i have no problem with default behaviours change. thats
canonicals decision. but starting from a default feature and ending in
feature removed is too hard. you can't hard-remove a feature which has
been THE DEFAULT since a year. i you want change the default config, but
let the possibility that people who want can change the config to the old
 default. thx

 +1

To all who want that behaviour AS AN OPTION back +1

If this is not going to happen until 12.04 final - You leave me no
choice rather to uninstall on my pc and laptop and on the laptop of 3
friends of mine whom I installed ubuntu to install them opensuse and
remove ubuntu since the best option was removed. My friends were saying
why did you upgrade us to that beta stuff - the launcher sucks now!

After the last updates, I see that maximized windows DO NOT go under the Unity
panel, but near its margin. This is MUCH better.
Cheers for the devs,

[Bug 930148] Re: Dodge windows is down but what about making the launcher autohide only on maximised apps ?

2012-03-18 Thread Claudiu Vlad
It was very hard for anyone to accept this(read anagram) Unity thing. The
Gnome2 GUI was perfect for millions.
However, some are determined to reduce the numbers of users even more, with
poorly argumented decisions.
I think someone should take things more seriously, after all they are
targeting the business sector, and Ubuntu is not some rich kid toy.
They are targeting the touchscreen market but this thing will not have a
future, because of poor pointing capabilities, and 90% of the users still use
the mouse and have HUGE screens like 21inch, so no need to save screen space
using this Unity.
I conclude that both scenarios - with autohide and fixed panel - are bad
scenarios.
Why didn't they give us a PPA or an apt-get install unity-dodge plugin or
something like this? I would say that people accept bad news easier when you
give them alternatives.

Re: [Bug 876699] Re: totem Could not determine type of stream

2011-10-17 Thread Claudiu Vlad
Hello,

Even if I had no PPA's active, I deleted all of them and reinstalled all
gstreamer related packages (using Synaptic).

Then I did

$locate gstreamer | grep claudiu

then I did this

rm -rf /home/claudiu/.gstreamer-0.10
rm -rf /home/claudiu/.gconf/system/gstreamer

Now, totem plays OK some xvid avi file, with this output:

$ totem Videos/avi/Canadian\ Bacon.avi
ERROR: Could not load classifier cascade
/usr/share/opencv/haarcascades/haarcascade_frontalface_alt2.xml
ERROR: Could not load classifier cascade

(totem:2736): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: value 10752000 of type `guint' is
invalid or out of range for property `connection-speed' of type `guint'

So this should be marked as Closed, I suppose.

Thanks for your time, Carl.

Cheers,

[Bug 872415] [NEW] radiotray doesnt play anything in oneiric

2011-10-11 Thread Claudiu Vlad
Public bug reported:

Since I upgraded to Oneiric, around 1st of October, radiotray doesnt work

First, it was dying with souphtttpsrc not found. Then I deleted the config.xml

Now, it starts but refuses to play anything, not even the default
stations.

I suppose there is a major regression in gstreamer libraries, I don't
know.

However, may I point that Openoffice didnt have this bug ? And the ttf font

Can you reproduce it (with Romania standard kb mapping) ?

Thanks,

It seems that this problem is because Times and Arial do not contain all
the glyphs (and that particular diacritics). And then, LibreOffice
displays that glyphs with another font that covers it. In this case,
LibO is using Liberation fonts to display missing characters from Arial.

As a side note, you can install LibO 3.4 by downloading it from its
 website.

Its a logical contradiction, mate.

If you choose to have encrypted folder, you want security.

If you want autologin, you dont give a s**t about security.

Anyways, for decrypting the folder, YOU NEED THE PASSWORD, which must be
supplied one way or another.

So think about it.

So for the compile-but-blacklist option, if that was what you thought I

Maverick: doing configuration changes for the Maverick kernel is way too
late, so no use discussing it.
Natty: Out of the applications listed here so far that Ubuntu ships, AFAIK
tvtime and mythtv already have fixes (gnomeradio as well? I'm not sure), so
I'm very hopeful that we'll have a better situation for Natty for the last
few applications still requiring the kernel-space emulation. Since I don't
care about Quake and other stuff we don't ship, I think it's unnecessary to
 enable compile-but-blacklist.

@Mike, I have assisted in making the fixed tvtime available so yes, I'm
prepared to do some of the work.

imagine trying to find where a bug is, in an audio infrastructure that

Re: [Bug 579300] Re: Please disable CONFIG_SOUND_OSS* and CONFIG_SND_*OSS*

2010-11-19 Thread Claudiu Vlad
SOLUTION: provide a PPA containing a custom OSS enabled kernel

How about that ?

On Fri, Nov 19, 2010 at 6:45 PM, Psychotron
579...@bugs.launchpad.netwrote:

So OSS doesn't support some advanced features? Sure. But why does that
mean OSS support needs to be broken? If users of some OSS-only app want
these features, they can bug the authors to add support for PA or
 whatever.

As for grabbing devices exclusively, I'm under the impression that it's
possible for a long time to allow even OSS apps to access devices in
parallel with ALSA. At least I haven't had problems with that for years
 now.

Space for these three modules is 124K on my system

And really: in this particular case I don't understand the necessity of
the removal. It's not that OSS is a system foundation and it's just too
limited for the future. It's just an ADDON. You can safely ignore it if
your apps all use ALSA. If you want to get it out of the main kernel,
then at least provide it as a separate package, e.g. using DKMS.

Besides the fact, that aoss (and possibly padsp) does not really work,
it's also much less comfortable. OSS emulation modules just work, with
aoss you have to find out about it first. Then find out what and how to
change. Probably nothing the average user is able to.

And sure there are guides to compile a kernel. Still it's not exactly a
5min job. And when will this advanced kernel build system see the light
of day? Nobody knows? That's not a great base for an alternative
solution. And again: it takes hours! On every update! I don't want to
imagine how log it takes on a netbook... And what for? For three tiny
 modules!

Also in my experience with Ubuntu it's unfortunately only partly
possible to stick with an LTS release. There is just always a breakage
wich is only fixed in the next release. In my example with Lucid the
broken radeon driver. Also sometimes you just need a newer version of
some software. E.g. the latest KDE is only supported for the last two
Ubuntu releases or so. So you want to tell users: Sorry you can't
upgrade to a newer desktop shell, if you want to keep the mixer of you
 TV app working?

So telling users to stick with LTS is only partly an option. Let alone
that I don't have much faith everything will be fixed with say the next
 LTS.

The solution is pretty simple: readd the modules in some way or another!
It hurts nobody (unless proved otherwise) and every other solution is
 just inferior.

PS: In my case the app is tvtime and what doesn't work is the mixer
 (i.e. adjusting volume).

 http://www.taringa.net/posts/linux/5777157/Sintonizadora-K-World-PCI-TV-PVR-TV-7134SE-en-Linux.html
there is a solution. Make this script, as /usr/local/bin/audioradio2.sh

 #!/bin/sh
 sox -r 32000 -t alsa hw:2,0 -t alsa hw:0,0

 gnomeradio
 kill $mpid

Changing hw:2,0 for your TV Card (1,0; 3,0; etc...) and for me works.

I have upgraded to a 2.6.35-23-generic not customized and without
 /dev/dsp and gnomeradio works perfectly.

Please, test it and thanks to Christophe Van Reusel for compiling a

Public bug reported:

I am using Jaunty and the latest pulseaudio from PPA, and after upgrade, the
ubuntu startup sound is distorted. Urban Terror sounds are distorted,
interrupted and sometimes sound is lost, with error Dropping sound. Sound was

I am also interested in downgrading, if someone is so nice to give me a quick

I think I found out how to work around this issue. Since an empty test

out of ~ until I got f-spot to work. After a while of some trial and
error, I nailed it down to ~/.gnupg.

After that, I kept trying until I pinpointed the problem (at least for
me) to gpg.conf. Since it was a nearly empty file (only three options,
including default key and keyserver), I finally got to the offending
 option:

 use-agent

Commenting this option was sufficient to make F-Spot close as expected.

Could others affected see if this helps you as well?

Re: [Bug 164627] Re: lirc based applications can not get exclusive access to /dev/input interface

2009-03-30 Thread Claudiu Vlad
Kopernik, you could try this:

lshal | grep -n5 IR

and look for the /dev/input/somethinglikeevent6

That is your IR receiver device.

On Mon, Mar 30, 2009 at 11:09 AM, Panayiotis Savva psa...@gmail.com wrote:

No it is not after all...
This is the reason we needed to stop GDM... :) To find if this is an
exclusive access problem on gdm or not... Obviously lirc is just not
 configured properly.

You are basing your ir remote on event6 (which could change simply by
re-arranging hardware or even on startup...)

What you need to do is reconfigure LIRC.
 sudo dpkg-reconfigure lirc

Make sure you select the correct input device for your video card / remote
 control.

You are getting an exclusive access problem probably on the wrong hardware
 (**event 6)

 Try this:

When configuring lirc, ensure that you choose /dev/by-path/pci*IR
  I
can't remeber the exact path for this setting, but it will come up in the
list when you reconfigure lirc... with IR I mean to try and find
the device that has the IR specified in it.

 Good Luck!

[Bug 333271] Re: Hard hangs desktop on launch (Jaunty)

2009-03-19 Thread Claudiu Vlad
I too have random screen corruption with nvidia driver 180 or 177 . Sometimes
it happens after entering the desktop, sometimes it starts right after login
and desktop never reaches full loading.
Corruption of screen starts with icons, they have white vertical stripes.
Sometimes the mouse cursor is corrupted, sometimes it has a square large ugly
bitmap attached to it (the mouse arrow).
All of these are happening with sudden lockups every 5-10 seconds, and harddisk
crunching like heavy swapping.
I attached 2 screenshots of corrupted gtk controls and desktop icons.

[Bug 322483] Re: Very common infrared remotes not registered

I just upgraded to Jaunty J amd64 and noticed this file

Re: [Bug 322483] Re: Very common infrared remotes not registered

2009-02-13 Thread Claudiu Vlad

I can't tell, but I think this file should give all the info we need...
I has the remote key codes - ALL WORKING AND TESTED.
I would like to stress the fact that this is a more general problem, as
the bug title says! So its not about a stupid Winfast remote, but its a
real need to include in the ubuntu configurations files the most common
hardware, so that most complains wouldnt happen at all.

Re: [Bug 322483] Re: Very common infrared remotes not registered

2009-02-12 Thread Claudiu Vlad
If theyre planning to have evdev work with IR remotes, they will have to
collect lots of remote specs. Maybe the HardwareTesting info collector
in System-Administration could include scanning for IRremotes keycodes.

Anywas, for the time, evdev should IGNORE the remotes, as long as its
not capable of handling them.

Cheers,

Re: [Bug 322483] Re: Very common infrared remotes not registered

2009-02-10 Thread Claudiu Vlad
It seems that the ignore rule makes the hal system IGNORE the infrared
remote, so that lirc can register the remote.
Without this rule, the computer thinks my remote is a keyboard, reading only
the Enter key and the digits. So, basicly, the rule says something like
this is a IR remote, m.f., leave it alone, its for LIRC to use.

Cheers,

2008-10-22 Thread Claudiu Vlad
Please allow me to observe that irexec is working fine with my remote
now, but only as long as irexec is loaded from /etc/rc.local, that is
BEFORE the X system is started.
So I must insist that a solution should be found that every remote
control like cx88 or such should not be taken over by evdev driver. In
this case we must consider this as a bug. Users should be able to run
irexec in their desktop sessions.
   Cheers,

Same problem here, even after deleting .ecryptfs .Private and Private folders.

Executing ecryptfs-mount-private in terminal does the job, finally.

[Bug 164627] Re: lirc based applications can not get exclusive access to /dev/input interface

2008-09-24 Thread Claudiu Vlad
Thanks for update, Mario. I am anxiously waiting to see this fixed. Also, I
really want to mention that gnome-lirc-properties is always crashing and cant
be run. I don't know if it is related to this bug, but anyways, ...
Cheers,

[Bug 164627] Re: lirc based applications can not get exclusive access to /dev/input interface

2008-09-22 Thread Claudiu Vlad
I can confirm this behaviour, as I found this error in syslog.
Additionally, remote control will NOT work if gdm and xorg are started ,
it is behaving like a crippled keyboard in xorg (only digits and enter
working). If I stop xorg and gdm, its working perfectly, as I tested
with irexec and irw.

Claudiu: if you are having trouble with gstreamer-properties AND
 cheese,
then its not a cheese problem; its a gstreamer problem. Cheese relies
upon gstreamer for its connection to the webcam. So, I think this
 bug
should be under gstreamer, not cheese. Ill change it, but feel free
 to
change it back if you disagree.
