[Bug 1960633] Re: Move virtual graphics drivers from linux-modules-extra to linux-modules

2022-02-21 Thread Clement Cherlin
** Description changed:

  Kernel: Ubuntu 5.13.0-28.31-generic 5.13.19
  Distribution: Ubuntu 21.10 (impish)

I run an Ubuntu desktop as a VMWare virtual machine client.

  The linux-modules-extra-${VERSION}-generic package contains
kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/vmwgfx/vmwgfx.ko, so at the moment I need to keep
it installed and updated. The only way to do so conveniently is to
install linux-image-generic, which also pulls in linux-firmware, which
  is ~760MB installed.

If vmwgfx was moved from linux-modules-extra to linux-modules, I could
use linux-image-virtual instead of linux-image-generic, remove linux-
firmware, linux-modules-extra, and the microcode packages, saving
  substantial disk space and bandwidth.

Other virtual graphics drivers in linux-modules-extra that might be
  worth moving are:

  kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/bochs/bochs-drm.ko
  kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/virtio/virtio-gpu.ko
  kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/xen/drm_xen_front.ko

  Thank you for your consideration.

Note: Edited significantly in response to
  https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2022-February/128103.html
- to better reflect the underlying problem and solution.
+ and https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-
+ team/2022-February/128104.html to better reflect the underlying problem
+ and solution.

P.S. There are three other drivers in linux-modules-extra that seem
VMWare-related, but they are not in use in my VM and I don't know
whether they are in common enough use to justify moving them to linux-
modules. I have listed them here for completeness.

  kernel/drivers/net/vsockmon.ko
  kernel/drivers/ptp/ptp_vmw.ko
  kernel/drivers/infiniband/hw/vmw_pvrdma/vmw_pvrdma.ko

[Bug 1960633] [NEW] Create linux-modules-extra-generic metapackage

2022-02-11 Thread Clement Cherlin
Public bug reported:

Kernel: Ubuntu 5.13.0-28.31-generic 5.13.19
Distribution: Ubuntu 21.10 (impish)

I run an Ubuntu desktop as a VMWare virtual machine client.

The linux-modules-extra-${VERSION}-generic package contains several
critical VMWare drivers (vmwgfx, vmw_vmci, vmw_vsock), so I need to keep
it installed and updated.

Since it is a virtual machine, there is no need to install packages such
as linux-firmware (761MB uncompressed). I would prefer to remove linux-
firmware to reduce disk space and bandwidth usage, but linux-image-
generic depends on it.

I would remove linux-image-generic and rely on linux-image-virtual, but
linux-image-virtual does not depend on linux-modules-
extra-${VERSION}-generic, and there is no linux-modules-extra-generic
metapackage. I would have to manually install linux-modules-
extra-${VERSION}-generic every time I update the kernel.

There are already linux-modules-extra-aws, linux-modules-extra-gcp and
linux-modules-extra-gke metapackages which fulfill the same purpose for
their respective linux-modules-extra-${VERSION}-xxx packages. It would
be very helpful to me (and, I'm sure, many others) to complete the set
with a linux-modules-extra-generic metapackage that would depend on the
latest linux-modules-extra-${VERSION}-generic.

Thank you for your consideration.

[Bug 1464064] Re: Ubuntu apt repos are not available via HTTPS

2021-03-15 Thread Clement Cherlin
Let's not get carried away with conspiracy theories.

I understand the argument in favor of HTTP because it permits
transparent caching of APT traffic. I think that transparent proxies
were once a valid approach to reducing redundant network traffic.
However, the time for untrusted, untrustable HTTP has long since passed,
even for signed content.

The threat of bad actors attacking systems through HTTP is widespread
and well-documented. The possibility of a 0-day in APT itself being used
to attack systems that use HTTP for updates is very real. Consider that
HTTP could be used to deliver stale packages that are subject to known
and patched vulnerabilities.

Even ignoring the security concerns, which nobody should, many
"transparent" HTTP caches are not at all transparent.

Proxies, both caching and non-caching, can and do block APT updates,
whether due to malfunction, misconfiguration, or malware scanning false-
positives.

A user that encounters a broken proxy may have no idea why their updates
are failing. If the proxy is silently delivering stale indexes, there
may be no sign that anything is wrong.

I have experienced this firsthand. I switched from the default Ubuntu
mirror to a HTTPS mirror because a corporate firewall was blocking
package updates. Using HTTPS resolved my problem. If HTTPS was the
default, there never would have been a problem in the first place.

Any organization that wishes to benefit from caching APT traffic can and
should run its own caching APT proxy or full repository mirror, not a
"transparent" HTTP cache. I have done this myself, and it works. There
is no longer any excuse for APT mirrors to default to HTTP.

[Bug 1891291] Re: Package libmpich12 on bionic installs libmpich.so.0 instead of libmpich.so.12

2020-08-14 Thread Clement Magnard
** Description changed:

- The package libmpich12 is correctly installing libmpich.so.12.x.x on every
version of ubuntu except for bionic where it installs libmpich.so.0
- I have experienced that problem with libmpich12 3.3~a2-4 on Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
- https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/amd64/libmpich12/filelist
- https://packages.ubuntu.com/eoan/amd64/libmpich12/filelist
+ [Impact]
+ * This bug affects the users because the users expect to get libmpich.so.1.2
when installing the package libmpich12.
+ * As the bug occurs only on ubuntu 18.04 it makes binaries that are compiled
with the lib provided by the defective package incompatible with other ubuntu
versions using the same package.

- The related question:
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * To reproduce the bug install libmpich12 on Ubuntu 18.04
+ * Then you can check the version of the libmpich that has been installed:
+ objdump -p /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libmpich.so | grep SONAME
+ You should expect the following output:
+ SONAME libmpich.so.0

[Bug 341684] Re: nm-applet notifications should have more information for disconnected states

2020-06-17 Thread Clement Lefebvre
Hi,

In Ubuntu 20.04, this patch relies on msgids which are no longer present
in nm-applet:

"Don't show this message again"
"Disconnected - you are now offline"
"Wireless network"
"Ethernet network"
"Modem network"

As a result, the notification you get when disconnecting the network is
not localized.

[Bug 1870208] [NEW] adding GUI to Ubuntu Server 20.04 results in no log in screen

2020-04-01 Thread Jerry Clement
Public bug reported:

apt install ubuntu-desktop on Servers with embedded Matrox G200 Graphics
Controller issue

After install/reboot there is no gdm login displayed
Editing /etc/gdm3/custom.conf to force gdm to use Xorg instead of Wayland fixed
the issue

Ubuntu 19.10 has the same problem
Same issue found installing the Desktop Version

Had to force the /etc/dgm3/custom.conf to use xorg from Grub recovery
mode

Conclusion being - should we try to fix this?

There may already be a fix in process
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/issues/364
Here are three proposals if the above does not pan out, one of these should
work, Number 3 is preferred
1. Fix Wayland’s support for G200
2. Rip out the broken support for Matrox G200 in Wayland
3. Convince Canonical to blacklist the G200 from Wayland during install and
force Xorg automatically

[Bug 1807344] Re: Wrong french keyboard when installing Ubuntu

2019-07-19 Thread Clement Lefebvre
I can confirm this bug. I'm not sure it should be against ubiquity
though.. although some files do refer to fr-latin9 (i.e. the obsolete
variant), a fix might be needed in console-setup as well.

One more thing.. the default for French shouldn't be fr-latin9 (variante
obsolete - legacy), but it shouldn't be fr-oss either (variante).

The layout of laptop and USB keyboards sold in France these days isn't
fr-latin9 or fr-oss, it's fr (i.e. French, without any variant).

[Bug 1827041] Re: Regression in smbclient, username required for anonymous login

2019-05-22 Thread Clement Lefebvre
Hi Robie,

Looking at the samba changes upstream, the series of commits merged on
the 4.7 branch on March 20th 2018 look extremely relevant:

https://github.com/samba-
team/samba/commits/v4-7-stable?after=b7d190f89d7674cf58a02486fa9887d393918611+304

They come immediately after 4.7.7, which doesn't bump tevent/talloc.
Could we cherry-pick the 4.7.7 and March 20th 2018 commits?

[Bug 1778322] Re: gvfs-smb-browse can't browse samba/smb tree

2019-05-01 Thread Clement Lefebvre
Do we need a new rebuild of gvfs in bionic or did the 1.36.1-0ubuntu1.3
update pick up the samba change when it was built?

Using samba 4.7.6+dfsg~ubuntu-0ubuntu2.9, I rebuilt gvfs
1.36.1-0ubuntu1.3 locally.

I then restarted gvfsd-smb-browse without success..

killall gvfsd-smb-browse && GVFS_DEBUG=1 /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-smb-browse

still nothing in Network neighbourhood.. and no sign of "smb-network:
Forcing NT1 protocol version" in the output.

I then killed the file manager and gvfsd-smb-browse, and typed:

pkill gvfs
GVFS_DEBUG=1 /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-smb-browse

I restarted the file manager and this time, I could see "smb-network:
Forcing NT1 protocol version" and Workgroup when browsing network:///.

What I don't understand though, is that after each new reboot, with this
locally built gvfs installed, I end up not seeing workgroup within
network:///, nor "smb-network: Forcing NT1 protocol version" in the
gvfsd-smb-browse output until after I pkill gvfs.

Going back to the repository version of gvfs, and I can't see workgroup,
nor "smb-network: Forcing NT1 protocol version" anymore, even after
"pkill gvfs".

This is observed when connecting to shares using the UI also. When gvfs

results in the dialog appearing again. A successful connection can be
achieved by typing a dummy username and a dummy password instead.

[Bug 1827041] [NEW] Regression in smbclient, username required for anonymous login

2019-04-30 Thread Clement Lefebvre
Public bug reported:

I noticed a regression in smbclient between 16.04 and 18.04.

After setting up an open share (RW access to everyone, no password) on
the Windows 10 box, I can access it with Ubuntu 16.04 (samba 4.3.11):

$ smbclient -L 192.168.0.104 -N
WARNING: The "syslog" option is deprecated
OS=[Windows 10 Home 17134] Server=[Windows 10 Home 6.3]

 print$ Disk Printer Drivers

Connection to 192.168.0.104 failed (Error NT_STATUS_RESOURCE_NAME_NOT_FOUND)
NetBIOS over TCP disabled -- no workgroup available

I get that successful result also if I set the min protocol to NT1, SMB2
or SMB3 using the -m argument.

But if I try to access it in Ubuntu 18.04 (samba 4.7.6), I get an
ACCESS_DENIED error:

$ smbclient -L 192.168.0.104 -N
WARNING: The "syslog" option is deprecated
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

Specifying the protocol to SMB2 or SMB3 doesn't change anything:

$ smbclient -L 192.168.0.104 -N -m SMB2
WARNING: The "syslog" option is deprecated
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

Interestingly enough, changing it to NT1 doesn't solve the issue but
note how smbclient reports a successful anonymous login:

$ smbclient -L 192.168.0.104 -N -m NT1
WARNING: The "syslog" option is deprecated
Anonymous login successful

And finally, what solves the issue is to set a username to something,
anything. In the example below I use the string "dummy", which doesn't
correspond to any username in the Windows or in the Linux box:

[Bug 1778322] Re: gvfs-smb-browse can't browse samba/smb tree

2019-04-30 Thread Clement Lefebvre
I don't know if it's related, it probably isn't, but I'll mention it
just in case.. I noticed a regression in smbclient and I'm wondering if
that's affecting gvfs as well.

After setting up an open share (RW access to everyone, no password) on
the Windows 10 box, I can access it with Ubuntu 16.04 (samba 4.3.11):

Interestingly enough, changing it to NT1 doesn't solve the issue but
note how smbclient reports a successful anonymous login:

If you think this regression is specific to smbclient, please ignore
this, we can open a new bug report. The reason I mention it is that I'm
wondering if gvfs isn't failing in a similar manner.

2019-04-24 Thread Clement Yuan
Hi,

This is the main problem will dell bios. It also related to Ubuntu OS.
Current Bios "Ubuntu OS" Boot Options selected SSD/HDD as primary drive.

To boot from XFS partition, you have to create a new boot option and
select PCIE drive/partition. Not SATA HDD/SSD.

On the first day using this laptop, I try to fix the boot time problem.
Once you blacklist "thunderbolt_power;thunderbolt" in fwupd, it improve
boot time. But it still take 1 mins to boot.

[Bug 1811660] Re: Unable to modify/create-namespace over NVDIMM-N

2019-01-25 Thread Jerry Clement
After booting to the OS, user is unable to create namespaces by running "ndctl
create-namespace". Even by using flags such as -f or -e, the operation is not
successful.
I am not aware of ipmctl being approved as a management tool for nvdimm-n (yet?)

Brad, Sujith is on vacation until 1/22/2019. We will try to find someone to
verify. But if we are not able to locate, What is the plan to mitigate waiting
for Sujith to return?

[Bug 1795453] Re: IO's are issued with incorrect Scatter Gather Buffer

@mreed8855 This issue may be related to the amd_iommu driver. There are
patches upstream that are not in the 4.15 kernel. How can we get a list
of those patches. Is there an amd_iommu expert out there?

[Bug 1771136] [NEW] Cinnamon support missing in gnome-calendar 3.28

2018-05-14 Thread Clement Lefebvre
Public bug reported:

Gnome calendar takes advantage of GOA (gnome online accounts) to show
calendar events. This works fine in any desktop environments.

Some desktop environments are able to configure GOA:

- GNOME, via gnome-control-center
- Cinnamon, via cinnamon-settings

Unfortunately gnome-calendar doesn't check which DE it's running in and
always tries to run gnome-control-center.

When run within Cinnamon, gnome-calendar should run cinnamon-settings
instead.

Here's a patch which works around this issue:

calendar/commit/76b58c9442b642a84267f38742083b069f2a8a89
