[Bug 1960633] Re: Move virtual graphics drivers from linux-modules-extra to linux-modules
** Description changed: Kernel: Ubuntu 5.13.0-28.31-generic 5.13.19 Distribution: Ubuntu 21.10 (impish) I run an Ubuntu desktop as a VMWare virtual machine client. The linux-modules-extra-${VERSION}-generic package contains kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/vmwgfx/vmwgfx.ko, so at the moment I need to keep it installed and updated. The only way to do so conveniently is to install linux-image-generic, which also pulls in linux-firmware, which is ~760MB installed. If vmwgfx was moved from linux-modules-extra to linux-modules, I could use linux-image-virtual instead of linux-image-generic, remove linux- firmware, linux-modules-extra, and the microcode packages, saving substantial disk space and bandwidth. Other virtual graphics drivers in linux-modules-extra that might be worth moving are: kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/bochs/bochs-drm.ko kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/virtio/virtio-gpu.ko kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/xen/drm_xen_front.ko Thank you for your consideration. Note: Edited significantly in response to https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2022-February/128103.html - to better reflect the underlying problem and solution. + and https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel- + team/2022-February/128104.html to better reflect the underlying problem + and solution. P.S. There are three other drivers in linux-modules-extra that seem VMWare-related, but they are not in use in my VM and I don't know whether they are in common enough use to justify moving them to linux- modules. I have listed them here for completeness. kernel/drivers/net/vsockmon.ko kernel/drivers/ptp/ptp_vmw.ko kernel/drivers/infiniband/hw/vmw_pvrdma/vmw_pvrdma.ko --- ProblemType: Bug ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu71 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC0: ccherlin 1645 F pulseaudio CasperMD5CheckResult: unknown CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME DistroRelease: Ubuntu 21.10 InstallationDate: Installed on 2021-01-05 (405 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 20.10 "Groovy Gorilla" - Release amd64 (20201022) IwConfig: lono wireless extensions. ens33 no wireless extensions. docker0 no wireless extensions. I would have to manually install linux-modules- extra-${VERSION}-generic every time I update the kernel. There are already linux-modules-extra-aws, linux-modules-extra-gcp and linux-modules-extra-gke metapackages which fulfill the same purpose for their respective linux-modules-extra-${VERSION}-xxx packages. It would be very helpful to me (and, I'm sure, many others) to complete the set with a linux-modules-extra-generic metapackage that would depend on the latest linux-modules-extra-${VERSION}-generic. [Bug 1464064] Re: Ubuntu apt repos are not available via HTTPS
Let's not get carried away with conspiracy theories. I understand the argument in favor of HTTP because it permits transparent caching of APT traffic. I think that transparent proxies were once a valid approach to reducing redundant network traffic. However, the time for untrusted, untrustable HTTP has long since passed, even for signed content. The threat of bad actors attacking systems through HTTP is widespread and well-documented. The possibility of a 0-day in APT itself being used to attack systems that use HTTP for updates is very real. Consider that HTTP could be used to deliver stale packages that are subject to known and patched vulnerabilities. Even ignoring the security concerns, which nobody should, many "transparent" HTTP caches are not at all transparent. Proxies, both caching and non-caching, can and do block APT updates, whether due to malfunction, misconfiguration, or malware scanning false- positives. A user that encounters a broken proxy may have no idea why their updates are failing. If the proxy is silently delivering stale indexes, there may be no sign that anything is wrong. I have experienced this firsthand. I switched from the default Ubuntu mirror to a HTTPS mirror because a corporate firewall was blocking package updates. Using HTTPS resolved my problem. If HTTPS was the default, there never would have been a problem in the first place. Any organization that wishes to benefit from caching APT traffic can and should run its own caching APT proxy or full repository mirror, not a "transparent" HTTP cache. I have done this myself, and it works. There is no longer any excuse for APT mirrors to default to HTTP. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1464064 Title: Ubuntu apt repos are not available via HTTPS To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1464064/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1807344] Re: Wrong french keyboard when installing Ubuntu
I can confirm this bug. I'm not sure it should be against ubiquity though.. although some files do refer to fr-latin9 (i.e. the obsolete variant), a fix might be needed in console-setup as well. One more thing.. the default for French shouldn't be fr-latin9 (variante obsolete - legacy), but it shouldn't be fr-oss either (variante). The layout of laptop and USB keyboards sold in France these days isn't fr-latin9 or fr-oss, it's fr (i.e. French, without any variant). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1807344 Title: Wrong french keyboard when installing Ubuntu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1807344/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1778322] Re: gvfs-smb-browse can't browse samba/smb tree
Do we need a new rebuild of gvfs in bionic or did the 1.36.1-0ubuntu1.3 update pick up the samba change when it was built? Using samba 4.7.6+dfsg~ubuntu-0ubuntu2.9, I rebuilt gvfs 1.36.1-0ubuntu1.3 locally. I then restarted gvfsd-smb-browse without success.. killall gvfsd-smb-browse && GVFS_DEBUG=1 /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-smb-browse still nothing in Network neighbourhood.. and no sign of "smb-network: Forcing NT1 protocol version" in the output. I then killed the file manager and gvfsd-smb-browse, and typed: pkill gvfs GVFS_DEBUG=1 /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-smb-browse I restarted the file manager and this time, I could see "smb-network: Forcing NT1 protocol version" and Workgroup when browsing network:///. What I don't understand though, is that after each new reboot, with this locally built gvfs installed, I end up not seeing workgroup within network:///, nor "smb-network: Forcing NT1 protocol version" in the gvfsd-smb-browse output until after I pkill gvfs. Here's a patch which works around this issue: https://github.com/linuxmint/gnome- calendar/commit/76b58c9442b642a84267f38742083b069f2a8a89 ** Affects: gnome-calendar (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1771136 Title: Cinnamon support missing in gnome-calendar 3.28 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-calendar/+bug/1771136/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
