[Bug 1801397] [NEW] do-release-upgrade broke my system 18.04 to 18.10
Public bug reported: So... I went to update my system, and when finished, my system was kinda broken. I did do-release-upgrade and it upgraded to Cosmic, and then I realized that some packages I used weren't installed, and they wouldn't install because other packages were missing. Then, I tried to go back to Bionic, using this guide here: https://linuxconfig.org/how- to-downgrade-ubuntu-linux-system-to-its-previous-version, and that broke it even more. Then I tried fixing my python symlink, and after I fixed it with python2.7, apt wouldn't work! And now I don't know what to do. Also, do-release-upgrade won't detect cosmic anymore, so I can't re- upgrade. [Bug 884152] Re: Error: Marking the upgrade (from 11.04 to 11.10) - unresolved package dependencies
Indeed, after removing the package you suggested, the error icon disappeared from the top panel. After rebooting, I was able to install important updates using the graphic update manager. However, after launching this update manager once again - even after rebooting - I am shown recommended updates (see attachment), but the Install Updates button is grayed out. There are no error messages in the (graphic) update manager, but I had previously gotten warnings about other held packages (see earlier comments). In 11.04, I used evolution, which I have not been able to use since the upgrade to 11.10. sudo apt-get install evolution gives the following error. The following packages have unmet dependencies: evolution : Depends: evolution-common (= 3.2.1-0ubuntu1) but 2.32.2-0ubuntu7 is to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. Should I try uninstalling the packages that are held back? There are three of them now. evolution-common evolution-plugins libgl1-mesa-glx Should I then attempt to install evolution again? [Bug 884152] Re: Error: Marking the upgrade (from 11.04 to 11.10) - unresolved package dependencies
evolution itself was not installed (actually not upgraded from 11.04); I removed libgl1-mesa-glx I also removed evolution-common/plugins but kept getting errors about dependence on libevolution when I tried to install. I then tried to clean up with apt-get autoremove (a suggestion given in the output of the earlier remove commands. Unfortunately the shutdown entry in the menu did not work and when I turned the computer off the Ubuntu graphical interface was not there. Worse yet, I am not sure I can get to the console. I tried to access the Setup after powering. My monitor does not show anything before GRUB - in particular no messages about booting alternatives, setup etc - so I have to hit keys in the dark to stop the default boot to Ubuntu. I do not know what I may have changed, but my monitor is now uniformly lit, that is, I get a blank screen, which I get rid of by turning off the computer. I do not know why some packages were not upgraded properly from 11.04. I'd appreciate any advice you may have, but I know it is no longer a support issue. [Bug 681054] Re: screen repeatedly goes black for a fraction of a second (two monitors detected?)
Hi, Bryce, could we coordinate further processing with upstream? I understand everybody has a lot of work to do, so I would like to know you are ready to forward the report and upstream is ready to look into it if I test again. I have tested edgers and especially natty several times only to be asked to test again weeks later since the upstream code might have changed in the mean time. Is there any reason to think that this particular issue may have been addressed, however? Actually, I would expect upstream to be able to answer this question quickly and if they want me to retest I will be happy to do it. Regarding the kernel, well, I have used live CD's for natty. Do you want me to retest maverick with a new kernel? If so, where do I get the experimental version? Thanks a lot. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/681054 Title: screen repeatedly goes black for a fraction of a second (two monitors detected?) -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 681054] Re: screen repeatedly goes black for a fraction of a second (two monitors detected?)
apport information ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg Since I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10, the monitor displays correctly for a couple of seconds, then turns black for a fraction of a second and then repeats the on and off sequence, making the computer nearly unusable. The whole sequence is periodic, not random. [Bug 681054] Re: screen repeatedly goes black for a fraction of a second (two monitors detected?)
Hi, Bryce! Yes, I am still experiencing this bug. (Otherwise I would have cancelled the report.) I have been updating my maverick with xorg- edgers and the bug has not gone away. I have also tried natty from a live CD, last time was at the time of note #84. I would also like to remind you that this is a regression (see also your note #10).

Sorry, Bryce, I misunderstood what you wanted me to do. I am running natty from a live CD and have just run apport to update this report. Hope that helps. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/681054 Title: screen repeatedly goes black for a fraction of a second (two monitors detected?) -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 681054] Re: screen repeatedly goes black for a fraction of a second (two monitors detected?)
a) Booted from natty live CD dated Feb. 14. The screen still blinks. b) For maverick, no workaround for this bug, only for #606987 as mentioned in #38. Rerunning apport-collect 681054. ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg Since I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10, the monitor displays correctly for a couple of seconds, then turns black for a fraction of a second and then repeats the on and off sequence, making the computer nearly unusable. Another bug reported earlier (#606987) persists in this release as well, perhaps with the exception that restarting the computer (as opposed to turning it on after a shutdown) gives a normal logon screen. [Bug 606987] Re: [i915GM] login prompt hidden on Novalite PX20
Regarding natty, I am embarassed to admit I was fooled by a known bug that caused System - About Ubuntu to say I was using natty. In fact, my computer failed to boot from the USB stick and ran maverick from the hard drive. Regarding maverick, I have been using PPA xorg-edgers since Jan. 15 as suggested to me in #681054. The symptoms persisted, but - following another suggestion in that report - I made them disappear by turning off the extra monitor that the system had dreamed up. In the GRUB menu.lst file, the kernel line now reads kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-25-generic root=UUID=... ro quiet splash video=VGA-1:d I think this report should be labeled to indicate that the problem is one of wrongly thinking that there is one extra monitor. Back to natty. I ran the Jan. 12 version from a live CD, so I did not have to login. When I tried to switch the user, I got a login prompt. So far so good. However, System - Preferences - Monitors shows that the system detects two monitors. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/606987 Title: [i915GM] login prompt hidden on Novalite PX20: extra monitor wrongly found -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 606987] Re: [i915GM] login prompt hidden on Novalite PX20: extra monitor wrongly found
** Summary changed: - [i915GM] login prompt hidden on Novalite PX20 + [i915GM] login prompt hidden on Novalite PX20: extra monitor wrongly found ** Description changed: Ubuntu 10.04 - Since I upgraded to Lucid Lynx, the system apparently thinks I am using two identical monitors. This is probably the reason it does not display the login screen on my monitor - it tries to send it to the non-existing one. I see a pink background with nothing written on it. + Since I upgraded to Lucid Lynx, the system apparently thinks I am using two identical monitors. This is probably the reason it does not display the login screen on my monitor - it tries to send it to the non-existing one. I see a pink background with nothing written on it. Update: a black screen with maverick since at least the end of Dec. 2010. Using System - Preferences - Monitors I turned off the second monitor, the one that the system mistakenly found, so once I log in, my desktop works fine. The monitor type is recognized correctly. It is just that the system dreams up an extra monitor of the same type. In earlier releases the system thought I had my monitor plus a laptop monitor and then I had to turn off the laptop monitor in the Preferences.
