[Bug 2043939] Re: Should depend on python3-httpx

2024-06-24 Thread Colin Watson
dnsdiag 2.5.0 now requires httpx itself, so I'll add a dependency when
packaging that version.

[Bug 2068602] Re: kernel oops in aafs_create in 6.8.1-1002-realtime kernel

2024-06-16 Thread Colin Ian King
Given it's a case of adding debug into the calling paths of
aafs_create() and into aafs_create to see why the ptr is null I don't
think finding reproducers is necessary the fast path to solving this. I
suspect this is a race condition hence it's not easily reproducible in
some configurations.

[Bug 2068602] Re: kernel oops in aafs_create in 6.8.1-1002-realtime kernel

2024-06-16 Thread Colin Ian King
I disassembled the offending code, the error is in the following code:

r13 is zero so the mov 0x40 is accessing data from the NULL ptr in r13

8172898f: 4d 8b 55 40 mov0x40(%r13),%r10 <
here
81728993: 4d 8d ba c0 00 00 00lea0xc0(%r10),%r15
8172899a: 4c 89 55 c0 mov%r10,-0x40(%rbp)
8172899e: 4c 89 ffmov%r15,%rdi
817289a1: e8 6a d3 af 00 call 0x82225d10 <---
down_write()

So looking at aafs_create() in security/apparmor/apparmorfs.c I'm
presuming the dir from d_inode(parent) is null and this is tripping this
issue.

Would be good to get John the apparmor maintainer to look at this.

Normally I'd help debug this further, but I don't know how to get access
to the RT kernel source.

[Bug 2068615] [NEW] kernel oops in pick_next_task_fair in 6.8.1-1002-realtime kernel

2024-06-06 Thread Colin Ian King
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Noble, Real Time kernel:

cking@noble-amd64-efi:~$ uname -a
Linux noble-amd64-efi 6.8.1-1002-realtime #2-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_RT Tue May 21
21:13:36 UTC 2024 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

How to reproduce issue:

git clone https://github.com/ColinIanKing/stress-ng
cd stress-ng
make clean; make -j 8

sudo ./stress-ng --seq 16 -t 20 --metrics --vmstat 5 -x apparmor,prio-
inv --progress --pathological

Note that this oops'd while executing the schedpolicy stressor, but just
running this stressor by itself doesn't seem to trigger the oops per se, so it
may be something to do with stressors being run prior to the schedpolicy
stressor.

[Bug 2068602] [NEW] kernel oops in aafs_create in 6.8.1-1002-realtime

2024-06-06 Thread Colin Ian King
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Noble, Real Time kernel:

How to reproduce issue:

git clone https://github.com/ColinIanKing/stress-ng
cd stress-ng
make clean; make -j 8

sudo ./stress-ng --apparmor 8 --vmstat 1

after a while I observed the kernel oops splat message:

Indeed, upstream 1.8.3 fixes this. I'll get that into Debian and it can
auto-sync to oracular from there.

[Bug 2043939] Re: Should depend on python3-httpx

2024-04-30 Thread Colin Watson
Recommends seems like the right thing to use for an optional feature -
but python3-dnspython already Recommends: python3-httpx, and that's
where the code that's directly using the httpx library lives. So I
wonder if it really makes sense to change dnsdiag for this? A
Recommends there rather than in one of its dependencies wouldn't really
change anything, and it would be harder to maintain since the code that
directly uses httpx isn't in dnsdiag.

[Bug 2053146] Re: openssh 8.9p1 for Jammy auth2-gss patch for gssapi-keyex method is slightly wrong

I fixed this in Debian today in https://salsa.debian.org/ssh-
team/openssh/-/commit/0947dd466d64cabfb527d8326e2507f473373a32, uploaded
as part of 1:9.7p1-1. You could possibly just merge 1:9.7p1-1 into
noble since it's mostly a bug-fix release, but failing that you could
cherry-pick the relevant change easily enough.

[Bug 2056451] [NEW] hfs: concurrent create/unlink can trip -EEXIST on non-existent files

2024-03-07 Thread Colin Ian King
Public bug reported:

Summary:

create hfs file system, loop-back mount it, run filename stressor with
stress-ng to exercise filename create/stat/unlink and we get unexpected -EEXIST
errors.
This can be worked around by adding a sync() call after the unlink() to ensure
metadata is sync'd.

Kernel: 6.8.0-11-generic

test case:
sudo apt-get install hfsprogs

dd if=/dev/zero of=fs.img bs=1M count=2048
mkfs.hfs fs.img
sudo mount fs.img /mnt
sudo mkdir /mnt/x
sudo stress-ng --temp-path /mnt/x --filename 8 --filename-opts posix -t 20
stress-ng: info: [132412] setting to a 20 secs run per stressor
stress-ng: info: [132412] dispatching hogs: 8 filename
stress-ng: fail: [132424] filename: open failed on file of length 1 bytes,
errno=17 (File exists)

errno=17 (File exists)
stress-ng: fail: [132426] filename: open failed on file of length 24 bytes,
errno=17 (File exists)

adding a sync() call in the stress-ng stressor fixes the issue:

The sync should not be required by the way, I just added it to
illustrate that there is a racy metadata sync issue in hfs.

[Bug 2053228] Re: software-properties-gtk does not start

2024-03-03 Thread Colin
I deleted the files in the /etc/apt/sources.list.d and then it opened normally
except all the sources where unselected.
When software and properties is opened again just tick the appropriate sources
from the first tab and select close and reload at the prompt. After that it has
worked normally again.

[Bug 1947618] Re: [i915] CPU locks up on Ubuntu 21.10 boot when 2 displays are connected

2022-05-19 Thread Colin Foster
Confirmed, my system boots fine when that second monitor isn't plugged
in. I removed the bluetooth driver as well, but that didn't fix it.

This is the adapter I'm using (I believe):
https://us.amazon.com/NiaoChao-Adapter-Charging-Compatible-MacBook/dp/B08CRXD22M

I have a bunch of USBC / HDMI adapters around, so maybe other ones won't
halt the boot.

The kernel I'm running:

[Bug 1947618] Re: [i915] CPU locks up on Ubuntu 21.10 boot when 2 displays are connected

2022-05-19 Thread Colin Foster
I'm seeing the same thing with 20.04 when running any of the 5.13
kernels. Last tested with 5.13.0-41.

My setup is an ASUS Hero XIII motherboard. Monitor plugged in, with a
second monitor plugged in via a USB / HDMI adapter (not sure if that is
relevant)

I had to remove iwlwifi-ty-a0-gf-a0.pnvm and iwlwifi-
ty-a0-gf-a0-63.ucode to get wifi to work, but the boot hangs with any
5.13 kernels. Only 5.11 will work, unfortunately.

Some of the bluetooth startup info when it fails (5.13):

Reached target Bluetooth.

I haven't upgraded yet, but I booted to the 2022.04 image and I was pleased to
see everything booted up without any issues. I'll see if there's anything else
to try - maybe around that ibt-0041-0041.sfi firmware

[Bug 1971214] Re: archive is missing dsc index

2022-05-03 Thread Colin Watson
I fear doing this is likely to involve a substantial rewrite. Debian
generates its Contents files directly from the dak database, but
Launchpad still uses apt-ftparchive to do this job, and I think (though
I could be wrong) that apt-ftparchive only supports generating Contents
files for binary packages.

thermal: int340x: Update OS policy capability handshake

Update the firmware with OS supported policies mask, so that firmware can
relinquish its internal controls. Without this update several Tiger Lake
laptops gets performance limited with in few seconds of executing in
turbo region.

The existing way of enumerating firmware policies via IDSP method and
selecting policy by directly writing those policy UUIDS via _OSC method
is not supported in newer generation of hardware.

There is a new UUID "B23BA85D-C8B7-3542-88DE-8DE2FFCFD698" is defined for
updating policy capabilities. As part of ACPI _OSC method:

Arg0 - UUID: B23BA85D-C8B7-3542-88DE-8DE2FFCFD698
Arg1 - Rev ID: 1
Arg2 - Count: 2
Arg3 - Capability buffers: Array of Arg2 DWORDS

DWORD1: As defined in the ACPI 5.0 Specification
- Bit 0: Query Flag
- Bits 1-3: Always 0
- Bits 4-31: Reserved

DWORD2 and beyond:
- Bit0: set to 1 to indicate Intel(R) Dynamic Tuning is active, 0 to
indicate it is disabled and legacy thermal mechanism should
be enabled.
- Bit1: set to 1 to indicate Intel(R) Dynamic Tuning is controlling
active cooling, 0 to indicate bios shall enable legacy thermal
zone with active trip point.
- Bit2: set to 1 to indicate Intel(R) Dynamic Tuning is controlling
passive cooling, 0 to indicate bios shall enable legacy thermal
zone with passive trip point.
- Bit3: set to 1 to indicate Intel(R) Dynamic Tuning is handling
critical trip point, 0 to indicate bios shall enable legacy
thermal zone with critical trip point.
- Bits 4:31: Reserved

From sysfs interface, there is an existing interface to update policy
UUID using attribute "current_uuid". User space can write the same UUID
for ACTIVE, PASSIVE and CRITICAL policy. Driver converts these UUIDs to
DWORD2 Bit 1 to Bit 3. When any of the policy is activated by user
space it is assumed that dynamic tuning is active.

For example
$cd /sys/bus/platform/devices/INTC1040:00/uuids
To support active policy
$echo "3A95C389-E4B8-4629-A526-C52C88626BAE" > current_uuid
To support passive policy
$echo "42A441D6-AE6A-462b-A84B-4A8CE79027D3" > current_uuid
To support critical policy
$echo "97C68AE7-15FA-499c-B8C9-5DA81D606E0A" > current_uuid

To check all the supported policies
$cat current_uuid
3A95C389-E4B8-4629-A526-C52C88626BAE
42A441D6-AE6A-462b-A84B-4A8CE79027D3
97C68AE7-15FA-499c-B8C9-5DA81D606E0A

To match the bit format for DWORD2, rearranged enum int3400_thermal_uuid
and int3400_thermal_uuids[] by swapping current INT3400_THERMAL_ACTIVE
and INT3400_THERMAL_PASSIVE_1.

If the policies are enumerated via IDSP method then legacy method is
used, if not the new method is used to update policy support.

[Bug 1956964] Re: iwlwifi connection drops using AX200

2022-03-15 Thread Colin Brown
I can confirm getting same errors on an LG gram laptop, running Intel
AX201 wifi hardware. I get frequent disconnect and reconnects until
finally, it failed to reconnect, despite reboots. I also see the message
concerning a microcode software error.

Removing ucode newer than v55, as suggested by Olszewski failed to recover wifi
operation. Upon boot, I note in the log that indeed v55 is loaded, followed by
a large dump (too large to type in full here because I cannot connect to the
disabled machine.) Ultimately, there is a message:
Failed to start RT ucode: -110

** Description changed:

  [Impact]

The Ubuntu signing box is running Ubuntu Bionic. The riscv64
architecture is expanding. We expect development boards using EDK II to
appear in 2022. We should be able to support secure boot then.

A patch for enabling this has been accepted upstream:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jejb/sbsigntools.git/commit/?h=next=25af2eb5e39b5d54703d4489182a6b9d0af58b76

  [Test Plan]

  * Signatures produced by sbsign in bionic, must be verifiable with
  sbverify from jammy.

  * Test instructions:
- - create as new certificate RSA2048) for signing EFI binaries
- openssl req -x509 -sha256 -newkey rsa:2048 -subj /CN=TEST_$*/ \
- -keyout db.key -out db.crt -nodes -days 3650
- - sign amd64, arm64 and riscv64 EFI binaries with Bionic's sbsign
- sbsign --key db.key --cert db.crt test.efi
- - check the signature with Jammy's sbverify
- - check the signature with Bionics's sbverify
+   - create as new certificate RSA2048) for signing EFI binaries
+ openssl req -x509 -sha256 -newkey rsa:2048 -subj /CN=TEST_$*/ \
+ -keyout db.key -out db.crt -nodes -days 3650
+   - sign amd64, arm64 and riscv64 EFI binaries with Bionic's sbsign
+ sbsign --key db.key --cert db.crt test.efi
+   - check the signature with Jammy's sbverify
+   - check the signature with Bionics's sbverify

  * Testing should be executed before landing the update.

  [Where problems could occur]

  * The upstream patch is trivial and should have no effect on any non-
riscv64 architecture. It only changes the architecture test that is made
  before signing.

  * With the test procedure above we ensure that we still can sign on the
  same architectures as before.

  [Other Info]

- * A separate SRU should be done for Focal so that we don't loose
- functionality in case of an upgraded from Bionic to Focal.
+ * The Focal task is so that we don't loose functionality in case of an
+ upgrade from Bionic to Focal.

[Bug 1790860] Re: ethernet driver update issue

2022-02-08 Thread Colin Watson
In my opinion, this was a bug in the e1000e installation scripts. "man"
intentionally doesn't support redirections inside its -P argument like
this; implementing that without going via a shell (which is a practice
that routinely leads to security bugs, so we avoid it) would add a
reasonably significant amount of complexity, and it isn't worth it here
because just redirecting the output of "man" to /dev/null would do just
as well.

Furthermore, this installation script seems to have been written for a
much older "man" implementation, because it appears to be deliberately
trying to create a plain-text cat page, which is an obsolescent
practice.

Fortunately, it seems that the maintainers of the e1000e driver noticed
this, because they fixed their scripts in version 3.6.0, released on
2019-09-22. As such, I think you should just be able to update to a
newer version of the driver and this should work better.

[Bug 1958929] Re: man-db trigger hanging

2022-02-07 Thread Colin Watson
I think it's probably worth looking again with man-db 2.10.0. Although
I didn't specifically do anything to fix this, things are sufficiently
different now that it's worth trying again and seeing whether it's still
a problem.

Failing that, the output of "mandb -pd" is likely to be useful. If that
stubbornly refuses to hang when you're looking at it, then you might try
"mandb -cd".

[Bug 1959015] [NEW] Switch to new HTTPS-capable domains for PPAs

2022-01-25 Thread Colin Watson
Public bug reported:

As described in bug 1473091, PPAs are now being served from new domains
that aren't under launchpad.net and so can safely serve HTTPS without
risk of compromising Launchpad session cookies. The old domains will
keep working indefinitely, but nevertheless it would be good if we could
arrange for add-apt-repository to use the new domains as of 22.04.

The changes are:

 * http://ppa.launchpad.net/ → https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/ (or http://
works too, but we should prefer https://)
 * https://private-ppa.launchpad.net/ →
https://private-ppa.launchpadcontent.net/

[Bug 1932084] Re: MANPAGER="grep -F {" man systemd.exec leads to man: command exited with status 1: sed -e ...

2022-01-23 Thread Colin Watson
The problem with fixing this as you describe ("no output at all") is
that it would make it difficult to understand what's going on in the
more common case where your configured pager is accidentally not
installed. Would you accept a less ugly error message (somehow)?

[Bug 1958389] Re: Jammy builds of xen segfault, but only on launchpad x86 builders

2022-01-19 Thread Colin Watson
I've tested manually on a staging lcy02 builder and it works fine there,
so worst case you should be able to retry until it happens to land on
lcy02.

I've reproduced the problem on a staging lgw01 builder. I need ddebs to
get a useful backtrace, so I've filed
https://code.launchpad.net/~cjwatson/canonical-is-
firewalls/+git/firewall-configs/+merge/414372 to get access to those
from the relevant builder - I should be able to pick this up again once
that's merged.

[Bug 1956949] Re: CPC AWS jammy builds fail with: "fuse3 : Breaks: fuse"

2022-01-10 Thread Colin Watson
That installation by launchpad-buildd happens in the container that
livecd-rootfs runs in, not in the chroot that livecd-rootfs is busy
building. If you look more closely at the build log you can see it
succeeding earlier on. We may indeed have to update launchpad-buildd to
use fuse3, but it's not what's breaking the build here.

The more immediate problem is:

  Package: fuse
  Task: standard, server-minimal

  Package: fuse3
  Task: cloud-image, server, ubuntu-server-raspi

This in turn is because open-vm-tools 2:11.3.5-1 switched to fuse3, so
fuse3 ends up in the expanded server seed
(https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/germinate-
output/ubuntu.jammy/rdepends/ALL/fuse3), while loads of other things
still depend on fuse and so fuse ends up in the expanded server-minimal
seed (https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-archive/germinate-
output/ubuntu.jammy/rdepends/ALL/fuse).

This is a distribution inconsistency problem, not a launchpad-buildd
problem.

[Bug 1956247] Re: fwupd-efi fails to upload

Epochs are not supposed to end up in the file name - see e.g. the remark

[Bug 1955944] [NEW] Missing Breaks/Replaces on network-manager-gnome

2021-12-28 Thread Colin Watson
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1920248] Re: Anker Soundcore Life Q10 microphone not working

2021-12-26 Thread Colin Watson
I have a Soundcore Life Q30 headset and had a similar issue; I also
tried going down the ofono route and found it too much of a confusing
nightmare.

I ended up using the pulseaudio backport from
https://launchpad.net/~smoser/+archive/ubuntu/bluetooth/+packages and
also doing a local backport of bluez from impish, as well as the
/etc/pulse/system.pa and group membership changes from
https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/User/Bluetooth/#usingbluetoothwhenrunningpulseaudiointhesystemmode
(but not the rest of that page). I haven't tried carefully rolling bits
of this back to find out exactly whether all four of those changes are
really needed; I'm sure that at least the pulseaudio backport is needed,
though, since you definitely need the changes from
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/-/merge_requests/491.

With this, my headset mostly works for me, although I still sometimes
find that pulseaudio crashes when my phone is also connected to the same
headset, which results in everything confusingly switching back to the
internal speaker/microphone until I figure out what's going on and
disconnect my phone. Not ideal - from the crash, I think
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/-/merge_requests/617
may be related, though I haven't tried backporting that patch yet to see
if it helps.

Installing random backports is not for the faint of heart, so a more
sensible approach might be to try Ubuntu 21.10 (perhaps from a live USB
stick to start with, before committing to the upgrade). Everything I
had to backport to get things working was from there, so there's a good
chance it will work better.

[Bug 1953343] [NEW] SSL Session cache performance regression between 11.0.4 and 11.0.12

2021-12-06 Thread Colin Leroy-Mira
Public bug reported:

The openjdk version 11.0.11 shipped in Focal (20.04) to Hirsute (21.04)
suffers from a regression in SSL session cache, causing a rather large
performance drop on very busy applications.

This bug is reported upstream as
https://bugs.java.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=JDK-8259886 and has
been fixed in 11.0.12.

The regression is apparently introduced by
https://bugs.java.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=8210985 in 11.0.5.

Would it be possible to push 11.0.12 to the Focal (and Hirsute)
repositories ?

Thanks in advance,
Colin

  == SRU Justification ==

- [IMPISH][HIRSUTE][FOCAL][BIONIC][XENIAL]
+ [IMPISH][HIRSUTE][FOCAL][BIONIC]

  [ The issue ]

Turns out the math is incorrect in calculating the offset into a file on
direct I/O writes cause non-block aligned offsets that cause -EINVAL on
writes. This can occur when running non-power of two number of hdd
  stressors, e.g. 5 stressors.

  [ The fix ]

  Upstream fix:

  From 9bbe45dfbd5db48c658dd0cf1f28cdb847bcee9c Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001
  From: Colin Ian King
  Date: Thu, 11 Nov 2021 13:11:27 +
Subject: [PATCH] stress-hdd: ensure offset is aligned to 512 byte boundary

Fix corrects rounds to the 512 byte boundary on offsets.

  See: https://github.com/ColinIanKing/stress-ng/issues/158

  [ Test plan ]

  stress-ng --hdd 5 --hdd-write-size 512 --hdd-bytes 2M --hdd-opts
  direct,sync,wr-rnd,rd-rnd --timeout 0 --verbose

Without the fix the test exits early with a invalid write failure error.
With the fix the test will run forever.

[ Where problems could occur ]

This fix only affects the hdd stressor test with random I/O writes AND
direct I/O. The fix aligns the random offset, so in effect the change
won't affect the overall test behaviour except for fixing the offsets so
they are always naturally block aligned. This does mean that the
stressor will do writes that are no longer spanned over multiple blocks
(which is a valid test case), so the test case is less effective, but it
is now at least working for direct I/O cases.
