[Bug 18995] Re: [MASTER] Open With dialog not user-friendly
@ktulu77 : As you can see in my patch, the command to call is xdg- open. It provides a unified way to open a file from the 3 major Desktop Environments (Gnome, KDE, XFCE). I hope to have the time to put it in an extension, it would make it more maintenable since Mozilla Ubuntu do not agree on how to fix this issue. -- [MASTER] Open With dialog not user-friendly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/18995 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 18995] Re: [MASTER] Open With dialog not user-friendly
@ktulu : That's not really possible, ATM, because there's no cross-linux desktop API to make things like this. It would requires firefox to be linked to Gnome, KDE and others desktops' libs. That strikes in front the policy of being a cross-platform browser : it's clearly not an option for Firefox. That's probably why they have implemented their own, in Firefox 3. Maybe it was a good idea, but the result clearly sucks, with Kde users forced to go in /usr/bin/ in order to open a file. From a Linux integrator point of view, it has REALLY complicated the work to do. BTW, the open with thing is more for power user (20 %). I don't know for you, but people around me are used to double clic on a file to open it, not right clic - Open With. I was told Ubuntu was for normal user (80 %), those who do not even understand what a software or a file is, who see computer like an advanced Mp3 Player, but maybe it was just a rumor... -- [MASTER] Open With dialog not user-friendly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/18995 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 362812] [NEW] Kerry does not work correctly on thunderbird imap messages
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kerry Hi, On Kerry in Kubuntu Hardy, mail indexing from beagle works fine, but one is not able to open email from kerry interface. When a result on an email is found, clicking on it does not open thunderbird on the corresponding email. We've made a small patch in order to fix it, since it's quite frustrating and beagle standard interface opens it without any problem. Would you please review and integrate it ? [Bug 18995] Re: Open With dialog not user-friendly
Jan Claeys, maybe you are wrong with my patch or maybe I am wrong from my point of view :). Let me explain : If you do not have to choose an application at all, you solve the problem with registrations of applications. There's already one place where one registers its application : the desktop environment. It seems enough to me, and it also seems the good place for doing this. Firefox should just shut up and use those preferences. regards, -- Open With dialog not user-friendly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/18995 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 18995] Re: Open With dialog not user-friendly
Hi *, With this small patch applied on Firefox 3 source code, (patch to apply on xulrunner-1.9 package), there's no more need to open with and no more problems with others Desktop environments like KDE or XFCE. It's based (and so requires) a really small dependency : xdg-open (~5Kb of perl script) and provides a unified way for opening files in Firefox, directly using System Defaults. It can be enhanced with a patch on this dialog, replacing open with label with something like open file. We already applied this fix successfully for ~ 1000 users since 3 months, and no problem shown up. I am currently trying to push it upstream, but maybe an Ubuntu integration can help this process. [Bug 93546] Re: Openoffice.org Address data sources missing
I've taken a deeper look at it. The main problem is that OOo integration with the mozilla products is totally outdated. They based their work on a really old and unsecure version of the mozilla engine (1.7). It's now possible to build OOo against a decent version of firefox for the nss/nspr part, but this specific part of AddressBook was not changed at all. They have just disable the build of those part, in this case. Displaying the 4 options in File|Templates|Address Book Source| Administrate button is quite easy. It's the removal of one lines in extensions/source/abpilot/makefile.mk of OOo source code. But the connector used for Thunderbird (an OOo datasource, in fact), in connectivity/source/drivers/mozab/ is totally unable to compile with current versions of thunderbird-dev and firefox-dev. Some needed header files, for instance, are totally removed from the devel packages. And even after adding them from the mozilla CVS, I have seen so many compile errors that it seems clear that there's a few years of differences. The current stance, for OOo, is to patch and patch again their mozilla 1.7.0 source in order to keep compatibility with changes of formats in address book : it's less costly for them than to update all the OOo concerned parts. The real fix for this issue is not to port this big patch into firefox/tbird, but to port OpenOffice to use current versions of thoses mozilla products. = You won't be able to see this issue fixed before a long time, IMHO. -- Openoffice.org Address data sources missing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/93546 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 93546] Re: Openoffice.org Address data sources missing
hmmm ... well after insisting a little on the build system on OpenOffice.org, and copying some headers from a mozilla thunderbird built from 2.x cvs branch, I managed to get a build of the Mozilla driver for OpenOffice, without the Mozilla 1.7 stuff. The driver com.sun.star.comp.sdbc.MozAb.driver is there, but I still get the error that the sdbc driver does not exist ... -- Openoffice.org Address data sources missing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/93546 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 146361] File association preference broken
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox At least under KDE system (Kubuntu feisty or gutsy). I have gimp and gwenview installed. I have put gwenview as my default application to launch for images. But when I click on an image file on a web site, there's only one choice : gimp. I cannot ever force it without editing my personnal mimetype.rdf by hand, which is a shame. I cannot do it since the Always use this action for this kind of file checkbox is disabled (grey). I haven't seen any answer in the bugzilla of mozilla community or in developper.mozilla.org. According to my understanding and some tests, Firefox seems to get the list of associated applications and take the first one in alphabetical order. It seems that's the root cause of this issue. ** Affects: firefox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- File association preference broken https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/146361 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
