[Bug 1788690] [NEW] Display manager can't start because gdm3 is uninstalled
Public bug reported: I was rebooting my laptop and it offered to install updates in the process. I agreed. When it came back, I was presented with a terminal login, not graphical. I installed Ubuntu 18.04 from scratch through a flash drive. Here is the relevant log from apt/history.log ``` Start-Date: 2018-08-23 15:11:56 Commandline: packagekit role='update-packages' Install: policykit-1-gnome:amd64 (0.105-6ubuntu2, automatic) Upgrade: gnome-control-center-data:amd64 (1:3.28.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.1, 1:3.28.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.2), gnome-control-center:amd64 (1:3.28.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.1, 1:3.28.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.2), gnome-software-plugin-snap:amd64 (3.28.1-0ubuntu4.18.04.1, 3.28.1-0ubuntu4.18.04.2), grub-common:amd64 (2.02-2ubuntu8.2, 2.02-2ubuntu8.3), gnome-software:amd64 (3.28.1-0ubuntu4.18.04.1, 3.28.1-0ubuntu4.18.04.2), grub2-common:amd64 (2.02-2ubuntu8.2, 2.02-2ubuntu8.3), grub-efi-amd64-bin:amd64 (2.02-2ubuntu8.2, 2.02-2ubuntu8.3), ubuntu-software:amd64 (3.28.1-0ubuntu4.18.04.1, 3.28.1-0ubuntu4.18.04.2), gnome-shell-common:amd64 (3.28.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.1, 3.28.3-0ubuntu0.18.04.2), grub-efi-amd64:amd64 (2.02-2ubuntu8.2, 2.02-2ubuntu8.3), gnome-control-center-faces:amd64 (1:3.28.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.1, 1:3.28.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.2), grub-efi-amd64-signed:amd64 (1.93.3+2.02-2ubuntu8.2, 1.93.4+2.02-2ubuntu8.3), gnome-software-common:amd64 (3.28.1-0ubuntu4.18.04.1, 3.28.1-0ubuntu4.18.04.2), gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock:amd64 (0.9.1, 0.9.1ubuntu18.04.1) Remove: ubuntu-session:amd64 (3.28.1-0ubuntu3), ubuntu-desktop:amd64 (1.417), gdm3:amd64 (3.28.2-0ubuntu1.4), gnome-shell:amd64 (3.28.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.1) End-Date: 2018-08-23 15:12:11 ``` This breaks the symlink /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service which points to /lib/systemd/system/gdm3.service which is provided by the gdm3 package. Reinstalling gdm3 solves the problem.
