[Bug 205915] Re: Hardy aptitude prints duplicate already installed packages

2012-05-06 Thread Daniel Hartwig
Due to the internal processing model of command-line actions, this
applies to most warnings and status messages that can occur during
install, upgrade, remove, forbid-version, etc.

Other examples:

Couldn't find any package whose name or description matched foo
Package foo is not upgradable, cannot forbid an upgrade

[Bug 251811] Re: Aptitude seems to ignore environment variable $no_proxy

2012-05-06 Thread Daniel Hartwig
Aptitude uses the environment variables $http_proxy and
$ftp_proxy for its proxy configuration, but seems to ignore the
 variable $no_proxy.

[These settings are handled by apt]

If you are using sudo to run apt-get then the problem is that
sudo only passed http_proxy, and not no_proxy. This was
considered a security issue and sudo has since been changed to
not pass any proxy settings. See #432631 for details.

You should instead make your proxy settings in /etc/apt/apt.conf

When not using sudo and testing with 0.8.10.3 both of these variables
are respected.

the proxy environment don't recognize , proxy variable
 like HTTP_PROXY ect...

Please use http_proxy which is more commonly supported, rather than
HTTP_PROXY.

[Bug 831768] Re: aptitude cannot handle conflicts with multiarch enabled

2012-04-27 Thread Daniel Hartwig
** Description changed:

  TEST CASE:
  1. Enable multiarch (should be automatic on new oneiric systems)
  2. Install an i386 package on amd64 (like flashplugin-installer:i386)
  3. Mark something with a lot of dependencies for installation
  4. On the confirmation screen, try to remove on of the dependencies (aptitude
will now fail to perform upgrades when there's a package conflict w/out
removing the i386 libs)

This renders aptitude painful on a multiarch enabled system (default in
  oneiric).
+
+ WORKAROUND:
+ 1. If you can survive without 32 bit libraries, just comment out the single
line in /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.d/multiarch; or
+ 2. Use another package manager (e.g. apt-get, synaptic, or Software Center)

[Bug 831768] Re: aptitude cannot handle conflicts with multiarch enabled

2012-04-27 Thread Daniel Hartwig
This is not specific to multiarch.

Agreed, though this test case is. I have only included the workaround
in the description as many users are likely to land here due to the
release notes.

[Bug 831768] Re: aptitude cannot handle conflicts with multiarch enabled

2012-04-27 Thread Daniel Hartwig
Also, this report does not need more comments about:

- the mention in 12.04 release notes, including the wording;
- whether the resolver is generally working or not working; or
- whether aptitude works or not with multi-arch.

I have today unmerged ~4 bugs which were not related to the issue
identified in the report description. Some of those are fixed,
others are not. Also removed are the watches on unrelated bugs
from bugs.d.o.

Please do not merge in other bug reports not related to multi-arch
conflict resolution as this will confuse the issue. It is possible that
the resolver can be made more useful for m-a while still being
broken with complex conflicts in general.

Yes, and those packages (krusader, kmail) are *not* in the listing of
packages for removal you posted. So this is not a bug with aptitude.

So I do not have kubuntu-desktop package.
And because kde meta package was droped.

Sounds more like the culprit.

Correct -- as previously mentioned, the problem resolver is not
intelligent in it's handling of m-a situations.

I was very particular in closing bugs with the changelog.

 The
directions in the bug description still produce a certain degree of
chaos; Daniel, do you think you could try those out?

I am sure that they do. I can not say when I will next have sufficient
time to look at this.

I suspect this can be fixed with a relatively minor change, any C++
hackers can investigate the source files
src/generic/problemresolver/* src/generic/apt/aptitude_resolver*
for potential solutions.

[Bug 603852] Re: python2.6 without shlib module gets unpacked/configured before required python2.6-minimal

2012-03-18 Thread Daniel Hartwig
Firstly, this is not an aptitude bug. Aptitude relies on APT to
determine the order in which to install/configure dependencies.
Let us not engage in reassign-pong until a clear culprit is determined.

User lool writes:
 python2.6 correctly depends on python2.6-minimal (=
${binary:Version}), yet python2.6 was unpacked before
 python2.6-minimal.

Unpacked packages are not configured. The order of unpacking in this
case is rather irrelevent. It is the order of configuration which is
important however, the error occurs before any configuration is
attempted.

The error is:
 Processing triggers for python-gmenu ...
 Rebuilding /usr/share/applications/desktop.en_US.utf8.cache...
 Traceback (most recent call last):
File /usr/sbin/update-python-modules, line 11, in module
 import sys,os,shutil
 ImportError: No module named shutil
 dpkg: error processing python-gmenu (--unpack):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Correct me if I am wrong with what follows.

Given that, at this point:
  - python2.6, python-minimal are both unpacked, but deconfigred; and
  - module shutil has changed places during this particular upgrade;

it is not safe to run any python code until these packages are
reconfigured. It is common practice to not disable running of python
code during a normal python upgrade because the packages are
previously installed and thus working. This particular upgrade
causes the python system to not work for some specific modules.

The updated set of python packages in this case should be disabling
the running of python code until they are reconfigured.

To diagnose specifically what is going on here it may be necessary to
examine the particular .deb files involved:

libpython2.6_2.6.5+20100616-1ubuntu2_i386.deb
libpython2.6_2.6.5+20100706-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
python2.6_2.6.5+20100616-1ubuntu2_i386.deb
python2.6_2.6.5+20100706-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
python_2.6.5-5ubuntu3_all.deb
python_2.6.5-5ubuntu4_all.deb
python-minimal_2.6.5-5ubuntu3_all.deb
python-minimal_2.6.5-5ubuntu4_all.deb

and also the python-gmenu packages from around the same time.

Is there a service for Ubuntu similar to snapshot.d.n which could
provide such old files?

[Bug 330656] Re: manual package selection displays dpkg output

2012-03-17 Thread Daniel Hartwig
 My
current idea is that we could do this by running 'aptitude --schedule-only'
 via the terminal plugin,

To clarify, '--schedule-only' is only intended for command-line actions.
It has no effect on the interactive mode, you are better to just run
'aptitude' and not deceive yourself about the (non-)effects of the
argument.

Is this package selection option still available for tasksel (i.e. is
this bug still relevent)?

[Bug 217585] Re: aptitude::Delete-Unused behaves incorrectly

2012-03-17 Thread Daniel Hartwig
apache2-mpm-worker is recommended by trac (through 'provides'):

$ apt-cache show trac | grep Recommends
Recommends: apache2 | httpd, ...
$ apt-cache show apache2-mpm-worker | grep Provides
Provides: apache2, apache2-mpm, httpd, httpd-cgi

so it is expected that having trac installed prevents apache2-mpm-worker
from being removed. Same situation with bsd-mailx, etc.:

$ apt-cache show bsd-mailx | grep Provides
Provides: mail-reader, mailx

[Bug 879683] Re: recommends are listed before reverse depends

2012-03-17 Thread Daniel Hartwig
Actually the order is somewhat random (for curses only) depending on the
order that APT lists the given dependencies. On the cmdline it is not
random, but still could be cleaned up a bit.

In any case, this will be changed to a fixed order. At the moment there
is an implicit strength order available:

Enhances, Obsoletes, Replaces, Suggests, Breaks, Conflicts, Recommends,
Depends, PreDepends

but perhaps a - to + order is more suitable:

Obsoletes, Replaces, Breaks, Conflicts, Enhances, Suggests, Recommends,
Depends, PreDepends

The list will start from PreDepends.

2012-03-17 Thread Daniel Hartwig
http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-manage-services-with-update-rc.d

 # update-rc.d -f apache2 remove

The use of -f is to force the removal of the symlinks even
 if there is still /etc/init.d/apache2.

Note: This command will only disable the service until next
time the service is upgraded. If you want to make sure the
service won't be re-enabled upon upgrade, you should also
 type the following:

 # update-rc.d apache2 stop 80 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 .

Respect DPkg::Options when calling dpkg to recover failed installs

Usually we use APT to call dpkg, which handles all sorts of nice
option parsing. However, if an install run fails then we to call
'dpkg --configure -a' ourselves to see if this fixes the problem.

APT passes various options to dpkg, so we should also.

Author: Daniel Hartwig mand...@gmail.com

Use full name (i.e. architecture) with ?name sort policy

A package's full name includes the architecture, so consider
this when using sort policies.

[Bug 884945] Re: aptitude show wrong package state

2012-03-16 Thread Daniel Hartwig
Problem was aptitude considering multi-arch packages to be the same.
You would get varying results for the status based upon which package it
encountered first in the search.

Here libc-bin was reported incorrectly:

$ aptitude-0.6.5 search libc-bin$ libc6$
p libc-bin- Embedded GNU C Library: Binaries
i A libc6 - Embedded GNU C Library: Shared libraries

The full list shows this ok:

$ aptitude search libc-bin$ libc6$
i libc-bin- Embedded GNU C Library: Binaries
p libc-bin:armel - Embedded GNU C Library: Binaries
i libc6 - Embedded GNU C Library: Shared libraries
i A libc6:armel - Embedded GNU C Library: Shared libraries

[Bug 809560] Re: package software-center 4.0.3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

2012-03-13 Thread Daniel Hartwig
 I symlinked /usr/bin/python to Python2.6 instead of
 the installed Python2.7: ValueError: /usr/bin/python
does not match the python default version. It must
be reset to point to python2.7

Files in /usr/bin are system managed. A user should not change them.
If you do, you have broken your system.

The error message you report is *not* a bug but a safety mechanism to
guard against users who have broken their systems.

If you desire to use a different version yourself, please set such a
symlink in /usr/local/bin/python.

You can not expect the system packaged software to work with a modified
/usr/bin/python.
