apt-get upgrade will correctly print out all the packages that will be
installed.

Currently (2013-09-05) it's kerberos libraries (libhcrypto4-heimdal et
al) that are not showing up in the update list.

[Bug 1016895] Re: smbd crashed with SIGABRT in dump_core()/setgroups being passed a -1 group is causing crashes.

2012-11-16 Thread Daniel Lee
I have a bug 1075670 that is apparently a duplicate of this one.
Normally you shouldn't be hitting this bug in precise which runs 3.2 but
with the rolling release plan 3.5 is now in the precise repos and is
intended to be made default. It's been several a couple months now with
no update to samba in precise so hopefully this comment will put this
issue back on the radar.

[Bug 1075670] Re: samba panics with sys_setgroups failed

2012-11-16 Thread Daniel Lee
So after spending some time debugging this issue and figuring it out I
find that it's already been reported against quantal when quantal was
not yet a 3.6.6.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/1016895 I can
confirm that my issue is a duplicate of that one.

There is already a good writeup on the samba side of the issue in the
bug report but I can explain why it only happens on kernels 3.5 and
higher here. Looking at the setgroups syscall code in kerne/groups.c
shows that a major rewrite landed in 3.5 as part of the user namespace
patches. One of the consequences of this is that the groups_from_user
function, which is called by setgroups, now explicitly tests against a
gid of -1. This is done because this value is now overloaded as
INVALID_GID for use in the user namespace implementation to indicate
that a gid has no mapping to the kernel namespace.

Now that 3.5 is in precise and is planned to be made the default for the
next point release I think it's important that the upstream cherrypick
from bug 1016895 get included in samba 3.6.3 as soon as possible.

[Bug 1075670] Re: samba panics with sys_setgroups failed

2012-11-15 Thread Daniel Lee
I need to make a retraction from my statement in #8. I think I was
mistaken about 3.7 not working and confused connection refusal for some
other reason (perhaps a timeout from a previous connection, windows does
not give very descriptive prompts) with the sys_setgroups failed issue
because I wasn't diligent about checking timestamps in logs. Before I
tested the 3 kernels you listed I first tested (again) that 3.2 was
working and 3.5/3.7 did not. It seems that 3.7 does work as well as all
three mainline kernels you put in #10.

I am reminded about how in the upstream bug I posted the poster mentions
that the connection issues might not crop up right away but I am
absolutely sure that every attempt I have made while the server was
running 3.5.0-17/18 has always resulted in a sys_setgroups panic. The
fact that it does not occur in any of the other kernels seems to suggest
this might be due to some ubuntu carried patch?

Sorry for the confusion.

[Bug 1075670] Re: samba panics with sys_setgroups failed

2012-11-15 Thread Daniel Lee
Okay this case is getting weirder.

I installed 3.7.0-2.8 from the link and I also installed the 3.5.7
mainline build and both seemed fine. However, I was eventually able to
boot into a 3.5.0-18 session that could actually connect without
throwing samba panics. By chance I was able to discover that restarting
smbd will (as far as I can tell) guarantee hitting the samba panic on
the next connection for affected kernels. So if I boot into 3.5.0-18 and
there is no panic right away I will hit one if I restart smbd
(presumably if I wait long enough then the panics might show up anyway
without needing a restart as is alluded to in the upstream bug report).
Testing on 3.2.0 confirmed that it was immune to this issue because
restarting samba did not cause all subsequent connections to cause a
panic.

Testing all the kernels again using this new method it seems that
kernels 3.3 and 3.4 are fine, but starting with 3.5.0rc4 I can trigger
the bug so perhaps my 3.7 report from yesterday wasn't a mistake on my
part after all. I tried the restart smbd trick in a 12.10 install and
I'm still not able to cause a panic there. I can go try testing the
earlier 3.5rcs but I think at this point it might be better to build
newer versions of samba and see if they fix the issue.

[Bug 1075670] Re: samba panics with sys_setgroups failed

2012-11-14 Thread Daniel Lee
For my future tests I rolled a VM to make sure everything was a clean
slate.

Starting from a 12.04.1 server install I select the OpenSSH and Samba
tasks. I tested to make sure that there were no issues connecting with a
3.2 kernel and that the 3.5 kernel made samba panic. I then tested samba
with 3.7.0-030700rc5-generic and experienced the same panic
(sys_setgroups failed). The connecting machine was in all instances a
Windows XP 32 SP3 computer which was hosting the VM.

For my smb.conf I made it as minimal as possible.

[Bug 1075670] [NEW] samba panics with sys_setgroups failed

2012-11-06 Thread Daniel Lee
Public bug reported:

Running precise with the quantal kernel as details in this testcase
http://packages.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/223/builds/25321/testcases
results in panics in samba and core dumps. Trying to connect from
windows will automatically cause the panic but sometimes connections
from other ubuntu machines will also trigger it.

[Bug 460733] Re: Transmission bit-torrent doesn't honor speed limitation preferences

2010-04-16 Thread Daniel Lee
The amount your computer uploads and the amount transmission uploads are
not strictly related. Transmission doesn't take into overhead when
limiting upload speed. Your transfers will incur some overhead due to
the bittorrent protocol and potentially DHT. If you're doing something
else on the internet, say watching youtube, there will be further
overhead that is completely outside of transmission's control.

Unless somebody can show definitively that transmission is not honoring
its own speed limits then I think this should probably be marked
invalid.

[Bug 443029] Re: No power icon (unclear how to shutdown)

2009-10-05 Thread Daniel Lee
Kazade, the shutdown applet already does what you request (just not in
a drop down menu) so in the meantime you can put that next to their
usernames (I prefer the popup myself). I do agree, however, that the
current indicator-session is not intuitive. It doesn't help that the
shutdown commands are taken out the system menu if the session applet is
running and so won't be in the natural place to look if you're coming
from windows.

2009-10-01 Thread Daniel Lee
I uploaded a branch that fixes the problem with the drawing in 16bpp
displays. It only fixes the background as that's where the banding is
more obvious. xsplash should still be shippable like this because the
banding around the logo and throbber is very hard to notice unless you
look really closely. A more complete overhaul of the drawing routine is
recommended as it's stifling to the artists if they can only choose
logos or throbbers with little color variation.

[Bug 436902] Re: Display properties hangs X when detecting monitors

2009-09-30 Thread Daniel Lee
This hasn't been fixed yet but I saw that there were a few lines that I
left out last time I posted the syslog

[Bug 438715] Re: gnome-display-properties does not edit xorg.conf virtual desktop correctly in karmic for dual head

I had the same experience on my computer with a 4850. For some reason
xorg.conf isn't being updated to the new virtual screen size. If that
setting is written elsewhere, then it's not being used.

[Bug 438406] [NEW] Bug in xsplash bg resolution chooser

2009-09-28 Thread Daniel Lee
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xsplash

On line 334 in the bzr trunk
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~xsplash-team/xsplash/trunk/annotate/head%3A/src/xsplash.c#L334
 ,
the logic for determining if the current resolution is good or not is this
if (widths[i]  width  heights[i]  height)

I'm guessing this is a typo and it should be
(widths[i] width heights[i] height)

[Bug 438406] Re: Bug in xsplash bg resolution chooser

2009-09-28 Thread Daniel Lee
Whoops, I seem to have made a typo as well.

(widths[i] = width heights[i] = height)
is probably a better fit. I feel like the two operations shouldn't happen
together to account for people running portrait style or otherwise odd aspect
ratio displays. Maybe check the aspect ratio first and then swap the
width/height check depending on which one is longer?

gint aspect_ratio;

...

aspect_ratio = width / height;

...

if (aspect_ratio  widths[i]  width)

...

else if (!aspect_ratio  heights[i]  height)

...

possible to just generate the smaller resolution images from a larger

[Bug 438406] Re: Bug in xsplash bg resolution chooser

2009-09-28 Thread Daniel Lee
Hmm, just realized the above code goes crazy for aspect ratios 2 and over (if
those even exist?). I guess
if (aspect_ratio = 1  widths[i] = width)
...
else if (!aspect_ratio  heights[i] = height)

would fix it (I keep forgetting the equals signs).

[Bug 420225] Re: New splash looks wrong on dual-screen setup

2009-09-28 Thread Daniel Lee
Can it play on both screens? Sometimes it's not exactly obvious which
monitor is primary or not to the user. gnome-display-properties
doesn't even number the screens so the only way you'd know is if you ran
xrandr from the terminal.

My best guess is that display properties is creating an incorrect

[Bug 434731] [NEW] [Hewlett-Packard HP Compaq nc6400 (EN176UT#ABA)] hibernate/resume failure

2009-09-22 Thread Daniel Lee
Public bug reported:

Upon exiting hibernating the system responded for about 1 second before
hard locking. Ctrl-Alt-SysReq was unresponsive and I had to power cycle
to restart.

I've had an intermittent problem with hibernating that might be related
to this but I don't know where to report it. Sometimes, when
hibernating, the computer will finish hard drive activity and then the
processor fan will then spin at full speed, as if power management was
disabled/processor running at full speed. It will not shut off and I
will have to power down manually by holding down the power button. Upon
restarting it will resume from hibernate as usual.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous hibernate and prevented it from
resuming properly.

2.28.0-0ubuntu1 installed but I still get taken directly to my desktop
when resuming.

[Bug 430981] Re: keybindings not remembered on reboot

2009-09-21 Thread Daniel Lee
How is this not a bug? If an upgrade corrupted a gconf value I think
that qualifies as a bug. If the user has to jump though hoops then he
has not solved the bug, rather he has found a 'workaround'.

A more pertinent question to ask is, can the people who've disabled
compiz temporarily to set the keybindings set NEW keybindings without
having to quit compiz again?

Well I figured out how to reproduce the crash but one of the recent
updates fixed it so I guess this can be deleted.

[Bug 427645] [NEW] [9.10 regression] HDA power_save=10

2009-09-10 Thread Daniel Lee
Public bug reported:

Following these instructions.

Hi all,

Luke and I have just pushed a one-line change to 9.10's
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf that enables HDA controllers to power
down their amps after ten idle seconds. This change anticipates the
larger power-savings objectives for 9.10.

We expect there will be regressions in the form of audible pops when
the AMPs power down (and/or up). If you experience this symptom in
9.10, please file a bug using ubuntu-bug alsa-base. Be sure to
change the summary of the bug afterward to [9.10 regression] HDA
power_save=10.

Thanks,
Dan

[Bug 410948] Re: Volume too loud

2009-09-09 Thread Daniel Lee
I have a laptop with only stereo out and the the pcm volume jumps
straight to 74% right away. The master catches up when the volume slider
is only at around 20% so 74% of max volume is compressed into only 20%
of the volume slider.

I have the same crash and it's definitely not any time related issue
