Will this be released to Ubuntu 20.04? This is very important for voice
calls in these times.

[Bug 1921286] [NEW] Desktop freeze and corruption after playing Steam game

2021-03-24 Thread Dario Menin
Public bug reported:

Steps for reproducing this issue:

   - Open Steam launching Age Of Empires 2 Definitive edition with discrete
graphics card
   - Play Game
   - Observe some stuttering in game, then close the game
   - Steam locks up and after a short time the whole desktop hangs and becomes
unresponsive (mouse pointer still moves, keyboard doesn't work, for example
alt+shift+fN)
   - In the meanwhile, the mouse cursor and some regions of the Steam window
become corrupted
   - System must be rebooted with sysrq REISUB

[Bug 1908921] Re: No system tray detected by hp-systray

2021-01-09 Thread Dario Menin
Also affects CopyQ, with two different behaviours:

1. CopyQ starts without system tray (app icon visible in the sidebar)
2. CopyQ starts - if I try to start it again it gives the message "Warning: Il
server CopyQ è già in esecuzione.", and "ps -eF | grep copyq" shows the copy
processes - but it's not visible in the tray.

To bring CopyQ back to the tray, i have to do:

- "killall copyq" from the terminal
- Start CopyQ from the activities view (Super key + search "CopyQ")

I also tried to change the autostart command adding a sleep: "sleep 10
&& /usr/bin/copyq", without luck, the icon is never shown in the system
tray.

[Bug 1805699] Re: System goes to sleep with external monitor and lid closed after login

2019-01-18 Thread Dario Menin
Hi, the problem happened again: i turned on the laptop and left it on
the gdm login screen for a while, so the screen went black (all this
with the lid closed, the laptop is connected to an external monitor and
keyboard + mouse). I woke up the screen moving the mouse cursor and i
typed in username and password, the login screen disappeared and the
laptop went in suspend mode. I had to open the lid to continue using it.

[Bug 1808881] [NEW] Unwanted touchpad movements on tap with Synaptics touchpad on DELL Inspiron-3521

2018-12-17 Thread Dario Menin
Public bug reported:

When using the touchpad, the mouse cursor moves even when keeping the
finger still on one point.

Triggering the behaviour: this happens when the contact surface is very
small, so it gets triggered for example when tapping on a button, right
before the finger leaves the touchpad. This makes clicking buttons using
the touchpad (for example, the "x" button in the browser tabs) very
difficult.

In attachment, an evemu-record done keeping the finger on one point,
barely touching the touchpad.

The recording was done with the command:

sudo evemu-record > touchpad.evemu

When using the touchpad, the mouse cursor moves even when keeping the

Triggering the behaviour: this happens when the contact surface is very

I think that you can close this, the problem didn't show up anymore,
probably it was something temporary.

Hi, sorry for the delay, I tried to trigger this behavior many times,
but with no success.

Apparently the problem is gone, you can close the bug if you want, I'll
post an update if the problem shows up again.

A notice: the problem doesn't happen every time, it happened two times in a row
in the past days, for example now i closed the lid during the boot process and
it didn't suspend. Is there some boot log i can send if i see the problem.

My guess is that this is related to closing the lid at a specific time.
For what i could see, the laptop goes to sleep in the moment when the
screen goes black between the GDM login and the desktop start.

[Bug 1805699] [NEW] System goes to sleep with external monitor and lid closed after login

2018-11-28 Thread Dario Menin
Public bug reported:

This is more or less a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1716160 (i just copied the title), I'm
opening a new bug as per comment
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1716160/comments/31.

I'm experiencing the same thing in Ubuntu 18.04:
- Boot the laptop with external screen connected
- Close the lid
- The laptop continues to boot and reaches the login screen
- Insert password
- The laptop goes to sleep, i have to open and close the lid to make it wake up
- Then it works without problems when i close the lid again

This happens in the last days, maybe the bug appeared again with some
update.

Let me know if something can be done to help to debug the issue.

[Bug 1746710] Re: Snap creates redundant duplicate directories in home folder

2018-05-11 Thread Dario Menin
The solution is to contact the snap maintainer, for example for VLC
https://snapcraft.io/vlc -> Contact Jean-Baptiste Kempf (VLC).

The maintainer must rebuild the snap, as they said here
https://github.com/ubuntu/snapcraft-desktop-
helpers/issues/92#issuecomment-385644966.

[Bug 1746710] Re: Snap creates redundant duplicate directories in home folder

2018-05-01 Thread Dario Menin
Just to clarify the situation: here https://github.com/ubuntu/snapcraft-
desktop-helpers/issues/92#issuecomment-385644966 one of the desktop
helper maintainers says that to solve the problem snaps must be rebuilt
using the latest desktop helper. This because snapcraft-desktop-helpers
is a build tool and so the fix can't be propagated to existing snaps.

The correct way to address the issue is to contact the specific snap
maintainer.

[Bug 1746710] Re: Snap creates redundant duplicate directories in home folder

2018-04-26 Thread Dario Menin
I hope that the fix in https://github.com/ubuntu/snapcraft-desktop-
helpers/pull/103 will land soon, this is totally not acceptable in an
LTS release.

In addition to the annoyance of the duplicated directories, this can be unsafe,
I imagine a flow like this:
1) user starts a snap application
2) duplicated directories appear
3) the user doesn't notice immediately, opens another application (es.
Libreoffice Writer) and saves a file in "Documents" instead of "Documenti"
(italian locale) because the name is similar. maybe he notices something
strange but attributing the duplicated names to a temporary glitch
4) user finally notices that this keeps happening, checks the home directory
through the file manager and then deletes all the directories with strange names
5) The file is gone and maybe two hours of the user's time (i think of a
student writing a document as homework)

We'll see things like this happening often with this kind of bug. Maybe
it seems harmless for technical people, but a large slice of Ubuntu
users aren't technical at all and can easily get confused from this
behaviour.

[Bug 1747307] Re: Wi-Fi networks list is empty after resume from suspend

2018-02-06 Thread Dario Menin
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

After the laptop has resumed from suspend, there are no Wi-Fi networks
listed in the network manager applet. The connection still works but the
applet shows the Ethernet connection icon.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) close the laptop lid to enter suspend (or click "suspend" in the system
menu in the upper panel)
  2) re-open the laptop lid, resuming the laptop from suspend, unlock the screen
  3) check the network manager applet, no Wi-Fi networks are listed, disabling
and re-enabling Wi-Fi doesn't help

This is a problem because it isn't possible to connect to another Wi-Fi
  network.

The problem disappears if i run:

  sudo systemctl restart network-manager.service

as described here: https://askubuntu.com/a/761220, however, the systemd
unit file solution suggested in the same answer doesn't work, probably
due to a timing issue (the command is run too early and the Wi-Fi card
  is not ready).

3) check the network manager applet, no Wi-Fi networks are listed, disabling
and re-enabling Wi-Fi doesn't help

This is a problem because it isn't possible to connect to another Wi-Fi
network.

The problem disappears if i run:

sudo systemctl restart network-manager.service

as described here: https://askubuntu.com/a/761220, however, the systemd
unit file solution suggested in the same answer doesn't work, probably
due to a timing issue (the command is run too early and the Wi-Fi card
is not ready).

[Bug 1704551] Re: i8kmon not started after resume from suspend

2017-07-16 Thread Dario Menin
I found this solution:

1) create a script inside /lib/systemd/system-sleep with your favourite
editor:

vim /lib/systemd/system-sleep/i8kmon

2) copy the following lines in the file (i used /lib/systemd/system-
sleep/wpasupplicant as a starting point):

#!/bin/sh
set -e

if [ "$2" = "suspend" ] || [ "$2" = "hybrid-sleep" ]; then
case "$1" in
post) systemctl restart i8kmon.service ;;
esac
fi

3) make the file executable for everyone:

sudo chmod a+x /lib/systemd/system-sleep/i8kmon

4) try to suspend, the fan speed problem should be gone now.

[Bug 1689825] Re: gnome-keyring not unlocked on boot

The only "permanent" (well, it still asks for the password once when
opening google-chrome after login) workaround I found was creating a
startup item as described here: https://askubuntu.com/a/911896.

I also had the flatpak PPA, I removed it but the situation didn't
improve, I also reinstalled the gnome-keyring package with no luck.
