This is a fresh install from the text-based installer of 9.10.
Not sure how to tell what audio backends for libcanberra are installed.
libcanberra-pulse is installed if that's what you mean.

[Bug 467483] Re: "loading" mouse pointer does not stop the moment firefox starts up

2009-10-31 Thread Darryl Grennan
Confirmed for fresh install of Karmic/i386/Alternative (Text-based) installer.
If a second (or more) process of Firefox is launched while the initial one is
loaded the bug does not occur.

My knee jerk reaction is to focus on the launcher as a possible culprit.

[Bug 466299] [NEW] favicons are absent in "Bookmarks Toolbar"

2009-10-31 Thread Darryl Grennan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

In Karmic, the favicon icons aren't showing in the "Bookmarks Toolbar".
Upon fresh install this is demonstrated by the lack of "zilla" icon next to the
"Getting Started" button.

The above mentioned missing "zilla" icon can be observed on the Ubuntu homepage
under "Take the Tour" where the browser screenshot appears halfway through the
page.
http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/910features

Other users are experiencing the same problem at ubuntuforums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305263

The workaround that works for me is as follows:
1. Go to "View"--->"Toolbars"--->"Customize".
2. Check "Use Small Icons".
3. Click "Done".
4. Go to "View"--->"Toolbars"--->"Customize".

[Bug 99740] Re: Firefox problems with desktop-effects

2008-09-28 Thread Darryl Grennan
The best workaround I've found for this in Firefox is to go "Edit"-->
"Preferences"-->"Content"-->"Advanced JavaScript Settings"--> uncheck
"Allow scripts to move or resize existing windows".

This is something that we "shouldn't" have to do. But it prevents the
bug from occurring. I haven't really seen any big impacts from
disabling it other than pop-ups not being the correct dimension on some
sites. But it seems to be a rare side effect.

I'd rather my parents use this workaround than explain to them how to
recover from the bug once it occurs. To recover from this bug, see the
last portion of my previous post above.

[Bug 99740] Re: Firefox problems with desktop-effects

2008-05-28 Thread Darryl Grennan
Re-opening this bug as I still have it. I'm running a fully patched
Hardy system.

Here's how to replicate the bug. You need to have Ubuntu's "Visual
Effects" enabled to trigger this.

1. Open a single instance of Firefox with no tabs open.
2.  Go to http://www.htmlgoodies.com/legacy/beyond/javascript/bigsmall.html
3. Click the "Maximize" link located at the top left of this webpage.
4.  Close Firefox.
5.  Re-open Firefox.
6. Now the titlebar for Firefox and upper/lower panels should be missing.

You will also notice that the "Edit--> Preferences" will open under the
browser instead of on top as well as the "Downloads" window.

To get Firefox back to "normal" you need to:

1.  Press "F-11" twice.
2. Click the "Maximize" button at the top right of you Firefox Window.
3. Notice that your top panel disappears but the bottom one remains present.
4. Right click on the Firefox process within your bottom panel and click "Move"
5. With your mouse, drag the window down a bit so that you can manually resize
it to your ideals.
6. Hit the "Maximize" button again and it should be back to "normal".

[Bug 216266] Re: Usplash without progress bar on shutdown.

2008-05-11 Thread Darryl Grennan
I found a workaround! (courtesy of prinknash on ubuntuforums)

Follow it word for word (cut the text.. Apply command change.. paste
the text..  Apply command change)

1. Go to System - Administration - Login Window.

2. Under 'General', press "Edit commands ...'

3. Select 'Halt command' - in 'Path' box, cut the text in quotes (I.e.
"Shut down via gdm") - press "Apply command change" - paste the text
back - press 'Apply command change'

4. Select 'Reboot command' and do as for 3. above

Try restarting a couple of times and see if this has fixed the problem.
Apparently this has fixed the problem for numerous people who have the boot
splash but no shutdown splash.
Now, could the solution/workaround give us a possible avenue to explore which
might lead to a fix?

I think this makes my first presumption correct. The networkmanager bug
has nothing to do with this at all. It's GDM not hiding the error.

[Bug 216266] Re: Usplash without progress bar on shutdown.

2008-05-08 Thread Darryl Grennan
exploder:

I've done all of the updates to Hardy and I can't report the positive
outcome that you have. This bug seems rather elusive but not uncommon.
I've read multiple threads on ubuntuforums.org which report the same
issue.

There's a bunch of people that I would like to upgrade to Hardy but I
simply can't because I will get numerous calls about their system being
"broken" if they see this crap every time they shutdown their computer.

Even if there was a workaround, I could live with that. But I've tried
a few proposed methods to eradicate this issue and nothing has helped.

[Bug 210095] [NEW] NM doesn't pass hostname to DHCP server

2008-03-31 Thread Darryl Grennan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Hardy isn't providing the hostname to DHCP out-of-the-box.

One day I noticed that when I ping my Hardy machine (wired) from a Windows
machine with:
ping -a 192.168.1.104

It doesn't resolve the hostname of the Hardy system. I then tried the
same on a Gutsy system and the hostname resolved perfectly.

These systems are both "out-of-the-box" and use DHCP to acquire an IP address
from a Linksys router. Both systems tell me that I have the
hostname of "ubuntu" when I type "hostname" at the command prompt. It should be
noted that both systems are running on the same hardware... Hardy is installed
while Gutsy is on a LiveCD.

I looking through the /var/log/daemon.log on the Hardy machine:

Mar 31 19:27:41 ubuntu NetworkManager: address 192.168.1.104
Mar 31 19:27:41 ubuntu NetworkManager: netmask 255.255.255.0
Mar 31 19:27:41 ubuntu NetworkManager: broadcast 192.168.1.255
Mar 31 19:27:41 ubuntu NetworkManager: gateway 192.168.1.1
Mar 31 19:27:41 ubuntu NetworkManager: nameserver 192.168.1.1
Mar 31 19:27:41 ubuntu NetworkManager: domain name
'phub.net.cable.rogers.com'

I then looking through /var/log/daemon.log on the Gutsy machine:

Apr  1 00:48:10 ubuntu NetworkManager: address 192.168.1.104
Apr  1 00:48:10 ubuntu NetworkManager: netmask 255.255.255.0
Apr  1 00:48:10 ubuntu NetworkManager: broadcast 192.168.1.255
Apr  1 00:48:10 ubuntu NetworkManager: gateway 192.168.1.1
Apr  1 00:48:10 ubuntu NetworkManager: nameserver 192.168.1.1
Apr 1 00:48:10 ubuntu NetworkManager: hostname 'ubuntu'
Apr 1 00:48:10 ubuntu NetworkManager: domain name
'phub.net.cable.rogers.com'

I did a tcpdump on Hardy while acquiring an IP address via DHCP:

tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode

- When I was looking around in my router configuration I noticed that my
- Ubuntu Hardy (beta) system was showing up with the hostname of "*"
- instead of the hostname that usually would appear (that being "ubuntu").
-
- I confirmed by running in the terminal "hostname" which returned "ubuntu".
- Previous versions of Ubuntu did not have this issue.
-
- My "/etc/hosts" file is as follows:
-
- 127.0.0.1 localhost
- 127.0.1.1 ubuntu
-
- # The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
- ::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
- fe00::0 ip6-localnet
- ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
- ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
- ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
- ff02::3 ip6-allhosts
+ REMOVED

[Bug 204362] Re: Filesystem-properties in Nautilus in continuous loop

2008-03-21 Thread Darryl Grennan
I can confirm this bug as well.
I stopped it after 500GB on my 40GB drive.

Yes, "500GB".
