[Bug 1305839] Re: FFe: Support for Third Party Driver Installation

2014-04-12 Thread Dave Walker
Hi,

I think everyone is largely aligned with the freedom aspects of this.
This is certainly not a concern for myself at least.

What is concerning to me, is that this feature feels rushed and somewhat
unfinished. I just had a quick look at the code that landed for this
feature:

There is no support for third party drivers in enlistment, commissioning
or fastpath/curtin. I am guessing the first two can be ignored,
depending on the nature of the driver; but the fastpath seems a big
loss.

The drivers.yaml file is a monolithic file that ships with the code-
base. I might have expected this to be a yaml per-driver file, allowing
easier stacking, probably managed via an external mechanism
(simplestream?). I am guessing drivers.yaml would appear to be a config
file that I can maintain as a sysadmin. Am I allowed to add extra
modalias as new hardware comes out, myself? What about third party
drivers I wish to add? What experience should I expect on upgrade? This,
if added now, feels like something that is needlessly hard to upgrade
from.

It seems the binary drivers udeb for the reference implementation is
pulled from both plain http (via wget, without validating against a
signed Release file), AND when the PPA is added the signing key is also
retrieved over plain http. This would imply a trust failure on both
parts of this.

It matches the kernel of the current install. Assuming that the pxe
installer is still using the netboot from the current installer, is
there any assurance that without warning - installs will suddenly stop
working, until the third-party repository has updated it?

The modalias matching seems to be quite nice. It looks like I can only
support one third party driver per node. Is there likely to be a
scenario where multiple drivers may be required?

Only amd64 is supported as part of this feature. Is it not anticipated
that other arches will require third-party drivers?

I don't think the archive pocket matters weather this is Universe or
Main. By current process, the only thing moving to Universe would
achieve is removal from the install media (which could equally be done
if in main). Meaning that squeezing in prior to release is even less
relevant.

HWE Kernel FFe bug 1281765, is left unfinished. Is this something also
planned to land?

To be clear, I am not against this feature. I was proposing that if
landed as a HWE feature post release, where this can be fully
implemented without encumbering the upgrade process to be needlessly
complicated.

no commentary on the regression potential, or the testing done.

Not to mention that RC1 was happily released with a broken MAAS
installer, that took 2 weeks to fix. This lowers general confidence in
the attention to detail, and this upload could be similar.

This feels like a hardware enablement change that is better suited as a
post-release SRU once it is well tested and the general churn has
calmed. I do not see a valid reason why this needs to be on the release
ISO.. it isn't an install time requirement?

I'm stopping short of outright NACK'ing this, but am rejecting the
upload from the queue to avoid it being accepted by mistake.

[Bug 1305135] Re: FFE: Provide ssh access to Qemu testbed for easier test debugging

2014-04-10 Thread Dave Walker
Martin, how confident are you that this doesn't cause any exposure to
users using the same process.. but potentially exposing the vm to a LAN
or worse, public?

There seems to be no clear warning that not just the stock default
username is ubuntu, but with adt the password is now the same.

I'm sure this is fine.. but as you can imagine, it would be wholly
embarrasing if this did cause and exposure.. so can you confirm how this
cannot happen?

Thanks.

[Bug 1302229] Re: [SRU] cloud-init Windows Azure does not have correct futil support for disk format support

2014-04-08 Thread Dave Walker
Hello Ben, or anyone else affected,

Accepted cloud-init into precise-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cloud-
init/0.6.3-0ubuntu1.13 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at

[Bug 1287147] Re: [FFe] juju-core 1.18

2014-04-07 Thread Dave Walker
There seems to be some confusion or change in plans. The original
description states

1.18 consists of:
1) HA of Juju state nodes
2) Full support for ppc64el and arm64

But the revised timeline says Without HA. Is HA no longer a release
target? Other than supporting ppc64el and arm64, are there any other
featureful changes?

Thanks.

[Bug 1272011] Re: MAAS installer doesn't prompt for superuser password and email

2014-04-04 Thread Dave Walker
This was a specific design decision from a workflow direction:
 - Get MAAS up and running and out of DI ASAP, asking minimal (or no)
questions. Withthe webui guiding next steps.
 - Force side auth via ssh/local rather than allow initial setting via webui,
to avoid initial install being hijacked
 - Begin to expose users to MAAS command line interface.

I am really not convinced this is a bug, has there been any user
feedback to suggest the current workflow is undesirable?

 Title:
   [FFe] FFe for 14.04 features

Status in “maas” package in Ubuntu:
   Confirmed

 Bug description:
   [Rationale]
MAAS requires the following features to land after the Feature Freeze:
* support for third party hardware drivers
* support for tracking which NICs on each node are associated with a
 particular network
* support for UEFI
* support for Other Hardware Devices.

For this reason, we are requesting an *Standing* Feature Freeze
Exception for MAAS' features described above. Uploads will only
contain the features described above as well as any bugfixes that
might come out of other features.

   Third party hardware drivers

   [Description]
This is related to bug 1281765 and forms the infrastructure to enable
hardware enablement teams to write drivers for hardware not already
 supported in MAAS.

This is essential work to prevent these teams from blocking on the
core MAAS development team, and to make writing new drivers an order
   of magnitude quicker and easier.

   [Proposed Changes]
The feature is already half implemented; bi-directional comms between
clusters and the region controller is now established but further work is
required to add an API layer between these comms and the driver code.

The API layer will translate the various requirements that a driver
should provide into calls to the region, and vice versa.
Additionally, all current code that is part of hardware enablement,
such as architecture types and power parameter choices, will be moved
into new driver code that will become part of each cluster controller.

   NIC tracking

   [Description]
A feature is already landed to support network tracking on Nodes that
MAAS manages. This needs to be extended to track on which NIC the network
 is available.

This is essential otherwise the existing work is of no use to API
clients if they cannot know on which NIC the network is to be used.

   [Proposed changes]
The database will gain a link table between MACAddress and Network, and
the UI will change so that it lets the user link networks against MACs on
the node rather than the node as a whole. API calls will also change
 accordingly.

[Bug 1080406] Re: DisassociateAddress can cause Internal Server Error

2014-03-29 Thread Dave Walker
Whilst looking at icehouse gate tempest logs, i noticed:
tempest.thirdparty.boto.test_ec2_network.EC2NetworkTest.test_disassociate_not_associated_floating_ip[gate,smoke]
... skipped u'Skipped until Bug: 1080406 is resolved.'

Is it still appropriate for this test to be disabled?

[Bug 1281760] Re: FFE: curtin enhancements for 14.04

2014-03-28 Thread Dave Walker
The d/changelog of the uploaded package doesn't seem to mention the
config-archive support. However, I see it present in the diff.

However, I don't see the LVM/Raid support. Is that present in
curtin_0.1.0~bzr95-0ubuntu2_0.1.0~bzr121-0ubuntu1, or is that still
planned?

Separately, I see the KERNEL_MAPPING update. Would it be prudent to
consider putting this data in distro-info, making enablement kernels
easier to update, rather than uploading a new curtain each time?

Package accepted, awaiting update on LVM/Raid feature, before closing
bug.

@mterry, thanks for looking at this.

Chuck, I'm sure this isn't intended for the iso, therefore seems fine. I
can't yet see this in component-mismatches. Please upload something that
depends on this, and we'll get this promoted to main.

FFe accepted.
