This bug seems to still be be present in Ubuntu 16.04. How do i fix it
so & can use ldap?

[Bug 381804] Re: switching to 'classical desktop' NO panels

Seeing the same thing on a fresh install on an eeepc 1000.  Installed,
used the desktop switcher to get the classic desktop.  Everything works
fine after changing desktops.  But after a reboot, even using the
failsafe gnome desktop session won't get me a working desktop.
