[Bug 1680156] Re: smartpqi driver needed in initram disk and installer

2017-04-26 Thread David Duffey
Hi Brad/Leann,

Some positive feedback that at least one system now works out-of-the-box
with the 17.04 installer.

I want to verify that this driver will land in the 16.04.3 installer
(initrd).

Is it true that any modules in an interim release installer (initrd)
always will automatically also be in the LTS point release installer
(vs. just in the kernel/kernel modules package).

Thanks,

David

[Bug 1529815] Re: InfiniBand DHCP flow with PRA and DHCP relay not working

2016-01-07 Thread David Duffey
When reading the RFC it appears the broadcast bit specifies to the
server how the client wants the server to respond. I have a few
requests:

1. Can you create pcaps in Ubuntu / RHEL with various settings (like
always broadcast on and off) so we can compare the behaviour and packet
changes

2. Is DHCP (program/code) on other treating IB differently (i.e. find
the code/patch and does it do a 'if IB broadcast, else unicast reuest"

3. Can you point to other bug fixes you might have found for this?

I found via google someone doing the following:

interface "ethX" {
   supersede dhcp-server-identifier 255.255.255.255;
}

Actually, In #5 said this feature was added in isc v5, but that is not correct.
Current upstream doesn't have broadcast flag settings.

[Bug 1529815] Re: InfiniBand DHCP flow with PRA and DHCP relay not working

2016-01-07 Thread David Duffey
Just a couple of other data points.

It looks like dhclient added the broadcast request flag functionality in
v5 (development release).

14.04 ships with 4.2
16.04 ships with 4.3 (the latest stable release)

Do we know if the user is using dhclient, or networkmanager or if either
client is acceptable? This feature was added at different times for
different dhcp clients. Can we get a package name for the dhcp client
being used?

[Bug 1156667] Re: Need driver support for IPMI device on OCPv2 Windmill

2014-02-26 Thread David Duffey
The dcmi kernel module has not been upstreamed (which the dcmitool uses, which
is necessary for inband management and setting username/passwords and BMC
information).

The dcmi kernel module also relies on the mei driver. The upstream mei
driver causes the OCP v2 Intel Windmill machine to hang on reboot. So
the mei issue appears to be more of a bug. Bug the dcmi module is not
upstreamed.

[Bug 1156667] Re: Need driver support for IPMI device on OCPv2 Windmill

2014-02-06 Thread David Duffey
Hi Keve,

We've tried on 14.04 LTS (daily). the inband management does not work
and the system locks when rebooting.

We did have the Ubuntu kernel team take a look. While we get a module
packaged and working in dkms format (and the dcmitool compiled).

The question from the kernel team is why this has not been uptreamed, or
if it has can you let us know to enable the upstream functionality.

[Bug 1179774] Re: ipmi kernel modules not detecting OCPv3 AMD Roadrunner BMC

2013-08-08 Thread David Duffey
I tried the precise daily build (08-Aug-2013) which had the kernel
3.8.0-27-generic #40 for the installer... then after I rebooted
3.8.0-28-generic #41 was installed.

uname -a suggests the installer kernel was built/compiled on Fri Jul
19th?

Anyway, the BMC did not work (ipmitool lan print). I used the script
above to manually load it... and then, quite annoyingly, when I rebooted
to capture logs and output, it just worked.

I'm not sure if the problem is intermittent or not... so will do some
additional desting

[Bug 1179774] Re: ipmi kernel modules not detecting OCPv3 AMD Roadrunner BMC

2013-08-08 Thread David Duffey
So after some testing what I found was that after installing ipmitool a
reboot was required, after the reboot the ipmi_devintf module was
loaded.

When doing a first boot, only ipmi_si and ipmi_msghandler is loaded...
installing ipmitool complains that /dev/ipmi* doesn't exist. After
rebooting the ipmi_devintf module is loaded fine and ipmitool works.

Changed this to Fix Committed.

Thanks Stefan! (now on to MAAS testing!)

I would tend to agree as well, but the ipmi devices are not created if

[Bug 1178899] Re: Add tg3 driver support for Broadcom 5725 (NIC)

2013-07-12 Thread David Duffey
I did a fresh install but add an add on nic in order to get the proposed
(27-40). Once the proposed kernel was installed the tg3 driver worked
fine.

Two gotchas the add on card showed up as p3p1 device name, and the tg3
nic p7p1...

I was expecting this kernel to fix
https://bugs.launchpad.net/opencompute/+bug/1179774 as well... but it is
still broken in raring-proposed.

I'm going to change this bug to certification-done, as it does fix the
tg3 driver.

2013-07-03 Thread David Duffey
kernel from #23 works w/ tg3! I also tested ipmi just to make sure it works.

Will this fix make it into the 12.04.3 LTS point release?

The only things to note, but don't hold up this bug from closing, is

1) The NIC shows up as eth11, but I suspect this could be due to this
not being a stock image (using an addon card in the past), etc... but it
still works

2) The first time I tested ipmi and reboot the BIOS stopped and said
The BMC is not responding, press ESC to continue... but doing the
exercise again didn't cause that to happen.

But let's not have that hold up this enablement fix... I'll do more
testing sometime and open new bugs if there are other issues.

Thanks!

As long as it lands in the 12.04.3 LTS point release (August?), that is
okay, no need to backport.

I have two questions though.

1. I don't think I've tested this on stock raring. Should I test on
stock raring or on a daily 12.04.3 build to make sure this will land in
12.04.3?

2. Could you also look into a related tg3 driver bug (same platform,
same NIC) I would like to have land in 12.04.3. It works in Saucy but
not raring (3.8). https://bugs.launchpad.net/opencompute/+bug/1178899

Thanks,

David

2013-06-25 Thread David Duffey
Here is the output of lspci - on that device. Notice the address
change... I'm guessing this may be because I removed an add-on PCI card
in the process.

[Bug 1178899] Re: Add support for Broadcom 5725

2013-06-25 Thread David Duffey
I Leann, I tried the 3.8 kernel you provided. Unfortunately it does not
make the tg3 driver aware of the NIC (and nothing shows up w/ ifconfig
-a).

BUT this kernel DOES make the impi_si model work (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/opencompute/+bug/1179774 ). Not really
relevant here I guess.

When testing a related bug for the tg3 driver
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/opencompute/+bug/1178899) using this kernel
(http://people.canonical.com/~ogasawara/lp1178899/) the ipmi_si module
successfully worked.

2013-06-25 Thread David Duffey
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected precise

** Description changed:

The AMD OCP v3 Roadrunner uses the broadcom (bcm) 5725 netextreme
card. 12.04 LTS does not recognize the card (in the PCI ID list or the
tg3 kernel module). The PCI ID is 14e4:1643.

My next plan is to try newer point relese, iterim release, and daily
  build.

I've not check kernel.org to see if this PCI ID is in the tg3 driver.

[Bug 1178899] Re: Add support for Broadcom 5725

2013-06-25 Thread David Duffey
The apport information is when running the kernel from comment #5. That
kernel makes the ipmi_si module work, but the tg3 NIC driver does not
work (does not show up as a nic device).

Be aware, in order to get the machine on the network I added a PCI NIC
card that shows up as eth10 (a realtek card), but it is not normally
found in this machine and not part of this bug report. This bug is
about the tg3 driver.

Another way I resolved this was to go into appearances (searched from

[Bug 945379] Re: Wireless connection randomly drops

2012-05-17 Thread David Duffey
It's not something I've measured and would probably have to done in
context that streaming lots of data probably has impact elsewhere too
(disk, CPU, etc.) so would need to be done with a variety for use cases
and at different loads.

For me I haven't noticed any significant power or performance difference
during typical use, except my network stack doesn't crash.

This bug haunted me as well, but I have not had this issue again since
creating
/etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf with the following line:

options atk9k nohwcrypt=1

While this is not a proper fix it might help file a solution and it makes
using
this laptop much more usable.

[Bug 416516] Re: Touchpad isn't sensitive enough on MacBook 5,2

2012-05-11 Thread David Duffey
I gave a partial solition in step #61 above which worked great after
loging in, but it didn't seem like the display manager would pick up the
change.

Instead, I found the follow solution completely resolved the problem for
me: create /etc/modprobe/appletouch.conf with the following:

options appletouch threshold=2

Now it works w/o the hack in #61. Maybe it is possible to change the
appletouch module to default to 2 (instead of 5), or use a device ID to change
the default for certain ids.

My touchpad USB id is 05ac:021a

[Bug 985741] Re: multipath can't show device on which is setup lvm

2012-04-26 Thread David Duffey
Hi Vencent,

The initial ramdisk includes modules, configuration files, and scripts needed
to boot
the system. Since everything works post-boot, I suspect that some
initialization
is the problem.

After looking through your information I am almost certain this is because
during
the init process LVM is grabbing the block devices BEFORE multipath gets the
chance.

Do you see that after the boot your volume groups are using scsi major numbers
(8)
instead of multipath (252)?

It doesn't explain everything.. I would expect this to be a problem even for the
second partition, not only when you create an LVM on partition 1. Nor does it
explain why the volume group doesn't come up, yet it found it's PVs (directly
instead of using the correct multipath).

Take a look at this bug report, it is a familiar problem. You might have to
recreate
an initrd with the correct multipath and lvm config files, and also make sure
the
kernel modules you need are loaded.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/246324

Sorry I do not have 11.10 installed or I would try to dig a bit deeper.
Canonical
does have a Technical Partner Program for vendors that want to have a formal
relationship (technical partner manager) to make their devices work well
out-of-the-box with Ubuntu.

[Bug 985741] Re: multipath can't show device on which is setup lvm

2012-04-25 Thread David Duffey
Hi Vencent,

Here are some things you can try that might help narrow the problem:

* Re-create the init ramdisk, make sure your storage module is in the initrd
(what modules are in the initrd, vs what modules are loaded after boot and
everything
is working)
* Can you test this on 12.04 LTS (released April 26th) to see if it has the
same behaviour?
* Show the output of multipathd -kshow config
* Give the output of the following commands before creating the lv, after, and
after reboot
   * dmsetup ls --tree
   * dmsetup table

I suspect this can be fixed in the initrd.

[Bug 894584] Re: ath9k driver causes kernel panic

2012-03-15 Thread David Duffey
I just realized I was still running the upstream kernel, like an idiot,
and was not booting the latest precise kernel.

It went 2 hours yesterday on the latest precise kernel without a kernel panic,
so if you don't hear
from me, assume it's fixed from my perspective.

If there is another panic I'll post it... otherwise assume it's fixed
for me.

Thanks,

2012-03-14 Thread David Duffey
Wow... totally understandable on why the automatic update of the bug
whenever there is a new kernel but annoying from a user perspective.

Latest update does not fix the problem.

Still panics, all of them happen when on battery power using precise
(when plugged in, everything seems okay), always has ath9k / wireless in
the trace.

Latest panic attached.

[Bug 915801] Re: sni-qt seems to no longer let skype show up as an indicator in precise

2012-03-13 Thread David Duffey
I too used the Ubuntu 10.04+ 64bit debian download from skype's website, dpkg
says
2.2.0.35-1.

I installed a second machine this weekend (Saturday the 10th) and
update/upgraded
which inhibited the same problem. Although on that machine Unity came up as
Unity 2D
on initial boot / login, and i didn't have the same gconf information in order
to do
the work around / hack. Bother machines were installed using 64bit ISOs.

I have a third machine to test w/ but was going to wait if/when Skype shows up
in
the USC to install from there.

Given some reports of it working and not working, what might be
different in the setups?

I will do an apt-get update / upgrade today and report back.

[Bug 915801] Re: sni-qt seems to no longer let skype show up as an indicator in precise

2012-03-13 Thread David Duffey
@ Steve,

I've attached my package list, maybe you can do a diff and see if there are any
other packages that
stand out I may have installed (I played with installing various empathy /
pidgin skype packages that
might have picked up something).

[Bug 894584] Re: ath9k driver causes kernel panic

2012-03-02 Thread David Duffey
Sorry, the above link does not fix it (I did double check that the kernel
installed and booted correctly).

After an hour of the machine turned on battery, a similar panic happened
(Fatal exception in interrupt w/ a call trace including ath and
i80211 functions).

This was with the machine at idle (no major network traffic).

Would be happy to continue trying other ideas (kdump, older kernels,
automated bisecting, etc) if it is something that is quick to setup and
try.

[Bug 894584] Re: ath9k driver causes kernel panic

2012-03-01 Thread David Duffey
Attached is a kernel panic. The system was updated as of March 1st (post Beta
1).
The panic is not logged anywhere on the system.

If you need a better capture that includes timestamps, I can provide.

If you need a dump, let me know if kdump is the best way to do so under
precise, and I will
try to capture it to disk.

I used this laptop extensively w/ 10.04, 11.04, and 11.10, so I think this is a
regression in
12.04.

Thanks,

[Bug 933825] Re: pulseaudio crashed with SIGABRT in report_jack_state()

2012-02-29 Thread David Duffey
Thanks David, this works! The only thing I don't know how to do is
build the i386 .deb files so some legacy apps will still work.

I made sure to install libjack-jack2-0 and friends, otherwise the build-
dep was picking up libjack0 which conflicted w/ jack2 and wanted to
remove some applications.

Ran bzr -- -us -uc to build without changing the changelog.

[Bug 933825] Re: pulseaudio crashed with SIGABRT in report_jack_state()

2012-02-29 Thread David Duffey
To answer my own question, I was able to build the i386 libraries on
amd64 by running

bzr bd -- -S -uc -us
sudo pbuilder --build pulseaudio*.dsc

and then installing the resulting amd64 (from bzr bd) and i386 (from
pbuilder).

This allowed me to run the skype client that linked to 32bit libraries.

Thanks again.

[Bug 876522] Re: black screen when dim screen to save power

2012-02-09 Thread David Duffey
I can confirm that this issue seems to be resolved for me as well.
Sometime between my last point 1/17 and David's post an update fixed my
MacBook. I see I've installed updated lots of packages including X,
xserver, and the kernel, so not sure exactly what update fixed this bug,
but WFM.

Can others on this notification list please re-test (to confirm the

2012-01-17 Thread David Duffey
Thanks Walter,

I removed gnome-screensaver and installed xscreensaver and the screen
still dims w/o being able to wake it up.

In particular, I tested by:

1. apt-get update/upgrade, replacing gnone-screensave w/ xscreensaver
2. Logout (to LDM)
3. Wait some amount of time
4. Screen dims
5. No keys (including brightness keys) will wake up the display
6. Blindly type in my password
7. Once logged in, brightness keys work

2011-07-12 Thread David Duffey
I have a similar problem but on a MacBook 2,2. Everything was fine
until I had the keyboard/mouse replaced, so I suspect although I have an
older Mac that I am experiencing the same problem on new Macs. I found
the following command fixes the problem:

xinput set-prop appletouch Synaptics Finger 9 15 100

The output from lsusb states:

[Bug 773524] Re: [Toshiba Tecra R850] SD card reader doesn't work

2011-07-06 Thread David Duffey
For those reporting success on the X220, are you using an SD card that
was not working before the setpci commands, or are you using an MMC
card? I was under the impression that SD cards worked on the X220, and
this problem was unique to the Toshiba R850s.

Also, for documentation's sake here is the equivalent kernel code that
should do the same as the setpci commands:

// add below for ricoh e823 before pci_read_config in Device
probing and in sdhci_pci_resume.

  pci_write_config_byte(pdev, 0xf9, 0xfc);
  pci_write_config_byte(pdev, 0xf150, 0x10);
  pci_write_config_byte(pdev, 0xf9, 0x00);

  pci_write_config_byte(pdev, 0xfc, 0x01);
  pci_write_config_byte(pdev, 0xe1, 0x32);
  pci_write_config_byte(pdev, 0xfc, 0x00);
// end of adding code for ricoh e823

[Bug 773524] Re: [Toshiba Tecra R850] SD card reader doesn't work

2011-05-25 Thread David Duffey
Some more information:

We found the following information check the class code of SD
controller on Tecra R850. If the class code is not 0x05, SDHCI driver
is not installed. because the class code must be 0x05 for SDHCI. The
class code is the offset address 0x0A in Configuration register of Ricoh
SD host controller, DID 0xE823.

We then ran the following:

ubuntu@201103-7412:~$ lspci
... lots of irrelevant devices ...
01:00.0 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd Device e823 (rev 04)
01:00.1 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd Device e232 (rev 04)
01:00.2 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd Device e852 (rev 07)
... irrelevant devices ...

so I want to query device 01:00.0.

ubuntu@201103-7412:~$ setpci -vD -s 01:00.0 0x0A.w
:01:00.0 @0a = 0880

It looks to me like it's *not* 0x05 as it should be...

When looking at the ubuntu git tree, it appears that it should already work
 * sdhci-pci.c has already included Ricoh R5U220, 0xE823 device ID, so the
driver would be installed on Tecra R850.
 * And sdhci.c and sdhci.h has included Base clock frequency change in
spec3.0.

In summary, I will see if we are looking at the correct value in the
configuration editor.

[Bug 787781] [NEW] Touch screen does not work with single finger touch, Lenovo x220i tablet

2011-05-24 Thread David Duffey
Public bug reported:

I have a Lenovo x220i tablet with the same wacom lsusb device id running
Natty similar to another bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/746652. I've
opened a new bug under request in case it is a different issue.

Basic pen functionality works, but single touch finger touch does not.

When touching with the finger, the pointer follows the finger, but upon
release the pointer goes to the top left.

The effect is:

Touching icons in the launcher:
 * does not launch, instead scrolls the launcher when releasing
Dragging a window
 * ends up always dragging the window to the top left
Using gimp to draw a circle
 * canvas correctly paints until releasing the finger, at which
point a line is drawn to the top left

I am using Natty, updated, and using the latest proposed kernel
 * Linux thinktablet 2.6.38-9-generic #43-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 28 15:23:06 UTC
2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I will attach an image I produced in The Gimp, one with the pen drawing
shapes (bottom row) and another with my finger drawing the same shapes
(top row). As you can see, the mouse even drags toward the the top
left corned (0,0) of the screen before recognizing the finger has been
removed.

[Bug 746652] Re: [MAVERICK] Touchscreen not functional x220

2011-05-24 Thread David Duffey
I have opened a new bug with a Lenovo X220i Tablet.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xf86-input-wacom/+bug/787781

I would be happy to test a new package.

[Bug 746652] Re: [MAVERICK] Touchscreen not functional x220

2011-05-16 Thread David Duffey
I have an x220i tablet with the same wacom lsusb device id running Natty.

 * Linux thinktablet 2.6.38-9-generic #43-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 28 15:23:06 UTC
2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Let me know if I should open a new bug report with more details.
I can provide testing if given guidance.

David

[Bug 773524] Re: [Toshiba Tecra R850] SD card reader doesn't work

2011-05-02 Thread David Duffey
It appears that this SD card reader may be the same that is found on the
Lenovo X220, which works (717435). I would leave room for someone with
more expertise to verify the system here and on 717435 are actually the
same SD card readers. Is there a way to verity that any firmware
involved is the same or running different versions?

But we have two R850s, one Intel based, another AMD based, that both
have this problem. So it is unlikely a dirty card reader.

[Bug 717435] Re: [MAVERICK] Ricoh e823 Media card reader not functional

2011-04-29 Thread David Duffey
It appears that this patch appears to enable the card reader, it fails to
mount/use/unmount MMC cards successfully. We are seeing failures on two
Toshiba R850 (Intel and AMD) laptops with the 11.04 release of Natty.

The output from lspci is:
 * System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd Device e823 (rev 04)

It appears to be a known issue according to:

 *
http://groups.google.com/group/linux.kernel/browse_thread/thread/81d5997647563887?pli=1

And it doesn't appear others have reported successfully using MMC.

-- cut and paste from the URL above --

Okay. There's nothing in the log about Ricoh, which probably means that
it bailed out early in the function. You could add a printk to the top
of ricoh_mmc_fixup_rl5c476() if you want to be really sure that the code
there is getting a chance to run.

I think the likely conclusion is that:

(a) The Ricoh controller has a proprietary MMC function that is stealing
MMC cards away from the SDHCI controller even though the SDHCI could
read them if it had a chance to.

(b) We don't know how to turn the MMC controller off, because our old
method for doing so isn't working on this new 0xe823 model.

I'm adding a few people who've touched this code to CC: in case they
have any ideas on working out how to disable the MMC function. If you
have contact with Ricoh directly or through a vendor, please ask them
for the PCI configuration writes needed to disable the MMC function on
this model so that you can read MMC cards with the SD interface instead.

[Bug 717435] Re: [MAVERICK] Ricoh e823 Media card reader not functional

2011-04-29 Thread David Duffey
The Toshiba laptops (R850) appeared to have similar problems, but it
appears the Lenovo laptop mentioned here works with SD (but not MMC),
and the Toshiba laptops don't work with either. A new bug has been
opened for the Toshiba laptops (Intel and AMD R850) here:

[Bug 430620] Re: [karmic] ALSA driver snd_hda_intel broken according to PulseAudio

2010-09-08 Thread David Duffey
I can confirm I am getting the same in Lucid as the original poster.

pulseaudio[21342]: alsa-source.c: ALSA woke us up to read new data from the
device, but there was actually nothing to read!
cylon pulseaudio[21342]: alsa-source.c: Most likely this is a bug in the ALSA
driver 'snd_hda_intel'. Please report this issue to the ALSA developers.
cylon pulseaudio[21342]: alsa-source.c: We were woken up with POLLIN set --
however a subsequent snd_pcm_avail() returned 0 or another value min_avail.
