[Bug 665534] [NEW] Add option to install all updates without confirmation

2010-10-23 Thread David Jaša
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

This option is really missing for machines of not-exactly-computer-
literate people, who never run updates by hand. I suspect that my
father's previous Ubuntu system has deteriorated because of this,
therefore I was really pissed of that Lucid LTS can't do that either.

Please add this option to update-manager and backport it to Lucid, so
computers like my father's one can be up-to date!

[Bug 485370] [NEW] g-p-m doesn't show enough information

2009-11-19 Thread David Jaša
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

See the Bug #462267. Now with battstat applet gone, its features should
be added to g-p-m so that user comfort is not harmed.

g-p-m shows only icon in status area. The icon can express only limited
amount of information and even then it is not used to its full
potential. Now the icon can show only battery states (external power
only, battery charging, battery charged, battery with high/low/very
low/critically low remaining capacity discharging).

Precise information is displayed in tooltip only. That means that user
needs to get used to interrupt regularly work on some battery, move the
cursor to the icon, wait for tooltip to appear, read the information and
then to resume work. All of this must be often done with integrated
pointing devices that are much slower and much more precise than regular
mouse.

I request these features to be added to g-p-m's UI to fix mentioned
usability flaw:

1) add a keyboard shortcut that would display notification bubble with
actual power state (and let know about it in tooltip, g-p-m settings or
another place that is likely to be visited by plain user)

2) icon modification so it displays actual charge in analog way. The
battery inside of Humanity g-p-m icon on my computer is 11 px high so
it should drop 1 px for every 100/11 = 9 discharged percents of
capacity. (And of course rise for every 9 % recharged.)

3) option to display remaining time or percents permanently

4) option to show large battery in style of battstat's two icons mode or
in style of Lenovo's Battery MaxiMiser gauge (see attachments)

[Bug 485404] [NEW] NM is not aware about wireless radio power status

2009-11-19 Thread David Jaša
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

NM in 9.10 is not aware about wi-fi power state changes on my hardware.
When I kill radio with fn-key combination, it only recognizes that the
network was disconnected but it doesn't know the cause so it tries
unsuccesfully to restore the connection (resulting in annoying wireless
network properties pop-up window) and many unsuccesful scans.

This is regression from earlier versions of Ubuntu, where NM recognized
the radio state and disabled wireless after it was turned off (and
enabled again after turn on).

[Bug 394924] [NEW] blank screen on rv350 in jaunty

2009-07-02 Thread David Jaša
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

On this computer, neither Desktop CD nor system installed from Alternate
CD could run without safe graphics option. If not so, the boot run fine
until start of X, when monitor went to off mode. One could still switch
to text consoles. After some struggle, I figured out that adding these
options to xorg.conf make a work around:

Section Device
...
Option DefaultConnectorTable true
EndSection

Section Screen
...Device Configured Video Device
SubSection Display
Depth 24
Modes 1024x768
EndSubSection
EndSection

I'm also attaching manually the log from first run that resulted in
black screen. Behaviour is the same in both freshly installed and
updated systems.

[Bug 379670] [NEW] totem-gstreamer stops playback when stream name is updated

2009-05-23 Thread David Jaša
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem-gstreamer

When listening to this stream:
http://www.rozhlas.cz/audio/download/ddur_maxogg.m3u with totem-
gstreamer, playback frequently stops with internal data flow error
message. My research has shown that it happens when stream changes it's
name. If run in CLI, it reports this:

$ totem-gstreamer Plocha/ddur_maxogg.m3u
/var/lib/python-support/python2.6/gdata/tlslite/utils/cryptomath.py:9:
DeprecationWarning: the sha module is deprecated; use the hashlib module instead

** Message: Error: Interní chyba toku dat.
gstbasesrc.c(2330): gst_base_src_loop ():
/GstPlayBin:play/GstSoupHTTPSrc:source:
streaming task paused, reason not-linked (-1)

For comparison, CLI mplayer reports this:
Demuxer info Name changed to Cesky rozhlas D-dur (Antonio Vivaldi: Dixit
Dominus D dur. Zalm 110 Vyrok Hospodinuv memu Panu. )

I'm assigning to totem-gstreamer, but it's likely to be a bug in some
other package, because totem-xine doesn't suffer with this bug.

[Bug 350150] [NEW] Don't create thumbnails of files on slow fs's

2009-03-28 Thread David Jaša
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I uses sometimes obexfs to get files from my phone to computer via IRDa.
This has one feature - any file transfer is very slow, roughly few
kB/s. When I open some directory on such fs in Nautilus, it tries to
download every file in folder causing double transfer of every file -
once for thumbnailing it and second time for actual download. Side
effect is also freezing it's UI.

Nautilus should prevent something to do this. I could imagine two approaches:
1) blacklist potentially slow fs's. Apart from obexfs, remote fs's can have
unpredictable speed and also removable fs's connected throught slow interfaces,
like USB 1.1
2) check if getting file for thumbnailing doesn't take too long time. If it
does, stop making thumbs of files in that particular directory

It would also be nice if thumbnailing run asynchronously, so that any
problem here wouldn't cause UI freeze.

[Bug 346649] [NEW] Make suspend to disk dumb-proof

2009-03-22 Thread David Jaša
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi-support

When hibernating, Ubuntu does nothing to make sure to boot next time the same
kernel. It can lead to loss of data if incorrect kernel is booted. In my
opinion, Ubuntu should make temporary changes to grub configuration that would
- disable menu
- set up timeout to some sensible value (not to waste time but leave space for
corrections if something goes wrong)
- make running kernel image option default (either through save default or
explicitly stating it)

and revert these changes after waking up of course. AFAIK OpenSUSE does
something like this.

[Bug 294972] Re: MASTER: xorg high cpu usage, general system sluggishness

2009-03-21 Thread David Jaša
Bryce, it would be nice, if you could point us how to find out causes of
problems. In my case situation is like this: any normal redrawing (not
involving xv overlay) means that X CPU consumption goes up. It doesn't
matter, if Firefox, Opera, gnome-terminal or OpenOffice want to redraw
something or I just move to another virtual desktop, in all cases the
desktop goes unresponsive for a while and X takes every CPU cycle it
can. It's biggest pain in OpenOffice, which can't normally scroll due to
this behaviour, but it's inconvenient in other programs too. Is there
some way find out what X is trying to do?

[Bug 90832] Re: Make sure US keyboard layout is always available as an alternative?

2009-03-12 Thread David Jaša
This is pretty common problem, because most localized keyboard layouts
have all those fancy english characters like #, @, , \, which are
necessary for any CLI job, accessible only through finger-breaking
keyboard shortcuts with AltGr. As far as I know, most administrators in
need of such characters simply switch to us layout by simple setxkbmap
us, but that's not a good solution. It would be nice to have us
layout set up as secondary one just after install, like it is in Windows
systems... I use hal for configuration of this:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?
deviceinfo version=0.2
  device
match key=info.capabilities contains=input.keys
  merge key=input.x11_options.XkbLayout type=stringcz,us/merge
  merge key=input.x11_options.XkbOptions
type=stringgrp:shift_toggle,grp:switch,lv3:ralt_switch/merge
/match
  /device
/deviceinfo

[Bug 181888] Re: mdadm problems after suspend

2008-11-12 Thread David Jaša
It is possible that mdadm isn't faulty -- I have similar problems with
my root partition (JFS) since upgrade to hardy. I didn't originally
report it, because I was using fairly broken system and non-standart
suspend method (uswsusp), but now happened the same with intrepid.

In my case:
1) computer suspends fine
2) upon resume, comuter hangs with 'waking...' message, and responds to nothing
(even to sysrq)
3) after reboot, superblocks do not match - one reports FM_CLEAN and lower
serial? number (item 18), the other FM_MOUNT and higher number
4) fsck.jfs refuses to check such fs, I've got to manually edit superblocks
with jfs_debugfs so they match each other and reboot with power cord plugged to
perform fsck

[Bug 268296] [NEW] Network-manager-called processes lack information about their state

2008-09-09 Thread David Jaša
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I'm using unreliable wi-fi connections heavily last time. Much too often
happens, that NM can't establish connection in situations, where just manual
running of wpa_supplicant and dhclient can. Many times is the trouble, that
* NM doesn't pause the establishing connection timeout while link is down
* dhclient isn't aware, when link is down and doesn't delay sending packets to
the times, when link is up

Apart from network-manager, problem can be also in dhclient not paying
attention to the actual state of underlying layers. In attached log, you
can clearly see, that DHCPDISCOVERs are sent when wpa_supplicant
reports, that supplicant's state is 0 and link therefore isn't
available. This problem occurs on up-to-date LTS Hardy (as of
2008/09/09).

It doesn't sound like a feasible environment, but it is the only

completed, it is quite reliable. Reliable enough to send this reply and
attachments in normal Firefox. Critical is just making sure that DHCP
packets are sent when the link is up...

[Bug 123002] Re: Broken suspend on 2.6.20-16.29

2008-05-31 Thread David Jaša
I found out another things, that could help:

1) If I run just pm-hibernate, system hangs on resume with console
cursor in top left corner of screen. Dmesg's above are from this case

2) If I change /usr/lib/pm-utils/functions according to description of
bug #207002, pm-utils use s2disk instead of default way, but it freezes
at some similar point, before or at restoring of X (attached dmesg is
from this case)

3) If I run s2disk directly, system resumes fine

Is there some dry run option for pm-utils to find out what does it
exactly do?

2008-05-17 Thread David Jaša
Martin Pitt:
Ah, I see. In this case this behaves similar to a normal USB hard
disk, and nautilus should call f-spot instead of a file browser. g-v-m
 cannot handle this any more.

So we are back to the original bug that nautilus should unbreak camera
 support handling.

What time could take fixing this bug? I'm delaying upgrade to Hardy at
computers I manage because this would seriously upset my users... :(

[Bug 223835] [NEW] Nautilus is not aware about gthumb photo importer

2008-04-28 Thread David Jaša
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I plug memory card from camera to card reader, Ubuntu no longer offers
import of pictures from camera. I've found out that importing is now handled by
Nautilus, so I went through Nautilus's configuration. It has an option for
choosing photo importer, but:
0) the field is grayed
1) nautilus isn't aware about gthumb importing capabilities
2) doesn't provide any way to enter importing command manually

This is inconvenient for all people who used gthumb all the time and
things worked well until now.

[Bug 202459] Re: Apt performs some actions multiple times when once would suffice

2008-03-18 Thread David Jaša
I think it's neither aptitude's nor linux's bug. There are certain
actions, which can be run just at the end of apt's actions (update-grub,
scrollkeeper-update and maybe others), but there's no way to tell apt to
do this, so packager have tu run such action during setting up stage
of package.

This is bug in debian package management but I'm not sure on which
level. And I'd like to keep it opened until it's fixed. :-)

[Bug 202459] [NEW] Apt performs some actions multiple times when once would suffice

2008-03-15 Thread David Jaša
Public bug reported:

I've noticed that if I just ask aptitude to purge kernel packages
(packages linux-image-, linux-restricted-modules- and linux-ubuntu-
modules-2.6.24-11-generic), apt/dpkg is invoking twice:

1) update-initramfs which doesn't need to be invoked at all (or once at the end
when it's got nothing to do)
2) update-grub which needs to be invoked just once at the end

(you can see output of aptitude in attachment). I think that this is
reason, why has bug #44535 so bad impact.

** Affects: ubuntu
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

Re: [Bug 131885] Re: Backlight no longer under my control on battery

2008-03-14 Thread David Jaša
Keenan Pepper napsal(a):
So, let me get this straight.

When the state changes from AC → battery → AC, or from battery → AC →
battery, g-p-m should forget the temporary setting and use the permanent
 one from GConf.

However, when the state changes from busy → idle → busy, g-p-m should
 remember the temporary setting.

This is sensible but still not enough IMO. Imagine you're working on
unstable power network and/or have bad contact in your power supply.
AC/battery status changes then pretty frequently and display brightness
blinks accordingly. So g-p-m should also
1) check, if this event isn't too soon after previous one and if it is,
change setting back to temporary one
2) if there are more frequent changes, take conservative approach at
swithing backlight (change brightness after some sensible timeout)

Alexander Sack napsal(a):
please test the latest 0.6.6 network manager from hardy. does that
 package fix this bug?

Nope. It writes to log when device is powered on/off, but doesn't
Enable/Disable Wireless accordingly and vice versa (as I described in
original report). I could attach log output when I boot to Hardy again.
