[Bug 683170] Re: should be possible to display only the launchers on the current workspace

Please consider the solution proposed in bug #667245. Having a graphical
representation of the workspaces on the sidebar would allow you to group
launchers by workspace AND hide launchers from inactive workspaces
(either when needed or at all times).

[Bug 688828] Re: Visually indicate minimised windows

2010-12-11 Thread David Prieto
So that the launcher helps you quickly identify what open windows you
have onscreen, even if they're partially hidden behind other windows.

Please notice that in my previous message I talk about shown windows.
this might mean differentiating windows that are visible (that is,
unminimised and in the current workspace) from others that are not
visible (either minimised or in another workspace) and that, therefore,
you shouldn't bother looking for.

[Bug 688828] Re: Visually indicate minimised windows

2010-12-11 Thread David Prieto
Mark, I've done a quick, simple mockup considering these points:

- Left arrows show the number of open windows, up to three.
- Left arrows which are on show the number of shown windows, also up to three.

Thus, in the mockup:

- The launcher to the left indicates that there are at least three open windows
(might be any number beyond that) and that at least three of them are shown.
- The one in the middle indicates that there are at least three open, but only
one of them is shown.
- The one to the right tells us that none of the open windows is shown.

[Bug 688816] [NEW] Don't create windows over the panel

2010-12-10 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Now that Unity has intellihide, when I open a window the system seems to
think that the space over Unity's launcher is free, and opens some
windows on it, therefore hiding the launcher.

I don't think this should happen. The launcher should hide if the user
moves a window over it, but not without user intervention.

[Bug 688830] [NEW] Select quicklist items with just one right click

2010-12-10 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

I'm used from gnome right-click menus to being able to right click, move
the mouse and release the right button over an item to select it.
Unity's quicklist, however, don't let you do this: you have to right-
click the launcher AND then click the quicklist item again, which is not
consistent.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

In the latest version of Unity apps with several open windows are

[Bug 684146] [NEW] Please make selected items look like in other Gnome apps

2010-12-02 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Most Gnome apps (for example EOG and Evince) show selected items in the
same way, represented as shown in the attached screenshot.

Nautilus is the one that shows them differently, a way that in my
opinion is not as aesthetically pleasant as the default. So, for visual
consistency and in order to improve the looks of Nautilus, I would like
it to start using the default look for selected items.

Most Gnome apps show selected items in a certain way, as shown in the
attached screenshot by images taken from Evince and EOG. Shotwell's

[Bug 678113] [NEW] Delete all 1312 songs?

2010-11-21 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

Banshee has recently gained the ability to right-click an artist or
album, and get the same options you get when right-clicking a track.
However, if I right-click an artist or album and then choose the delete
from the drive I get a confirmation dialogue asking me if I want to
delete my whole library, not just the tracks in that album / from that
artist.

I have not clicked yes so I don't know if it actually deletes all your

[Bug 678116] [NEW] Use a standard way to highlight elements

2010-11-21 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

I have noticed that Banshee does not seem to follow the way other apps
in Ubuntu highlight items, or show the active pane; normally apps
highlight items using an orange colour, which changes to grey when that
pane (or the whole app) is not focused.

Instead, Banshee seems to use orange for all panes, the focused one as
well as the unfocused, and shows which pane is focused by drawing a
second border inside it. This deviation from the norm makes more
difficult to guess what will happen if you press a given key (e.g. the
tab key or a direction key), so using the standard way would be
beneficial.

2010-11-21 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

I don't often browse by artist, so while the album browser is useful for
me, the artist browser just stands in the way taking space and
cluttering the interface. I would like to be able to be able to hide
that specific part of the browser, as well as (not for me, but I can see
how this would be useful to other users) be able to add or hide other
additional parts:

- Browse by year.

[Bug 669807] Re: Banshee doesn't see some of my songs

2010-11-03 Thread David Prieto
Hi Chow, apparently Banshee doesn't even see the files. I'm attaching
what I get when trying to import them: you see how the files appear in
Nautilus, but the same folder appears empty when I try to import the
individual files in Banshee. Therefore it's impossible to try to import
them, and to attach a result of --debug.

Should I attach one of the mp3 files to the bug, right here?

[Bug 669807] Re: Banshee doesn't see some of my songs

2010-11-03 Thread David Prieto
I'm attaching one of the mp3 files that Banshe doesn't see, but really,
there are hundreds of them.

What I meant is Nautilus sees the files, Totem plays them, but Banshee
doesn't see them. I can import the containing folder but it has no
results, and if I try to import the individual files the folder appears
as if it were empty (as shown in my previous screenshot).

[Bug 669807] Re: Banshee doesn't see some of my songs

2010-11-03 Thread David Prieto
Alright, after I checked the link to the file I uploaded I noticed that
the file lacks the .mp3 extension, and that's why Banshee can't see it.
Rhythmbox could see it though, that's why the problem had gone
unnoticed.

[Bug 669807] [NEW] Banshee doesn't see some of my songs

2010-11-02 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

Hi,

Upon hearing that Banshee would be the default music player in Natty, I
installed it to try it out. However, it seems to be missing more than
half of my music collection: whereas Rhythmbox shows 994 songs, Banshee
only shows 443 (so it's missing more than a half!) Even when I tell it
to import a folder where I know are mp3 files it failed to detect, it
still won't find them.

Is this a known bug? Is there something I can do about it?

[Bug 668196] Re: Can't get contextual menu for maximized windows

2010-11-02 Thread David Prieto
This raises another issue; let's suppose I have two windows:

- Window A (unmaximized, focused, at the front).
- Window B (maximized, unfocused, at the back).

When I want to reach B, I usually try to click its titlebar (see the
example) to bring it to the front. Of course it does nothing: at that
moment, the panel looks like B's titlebar but is actually A's toolbar.

My question is: in a situation like the one I describe, should the empty
space in the panel behave as B's titlebar even though the occupied space
is A's toolbar?

[Bug 669874] [NEW] Use the CTRL / SHIFT keys to do a wallpaper slideshow

2010-11-02 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Gnome-appearance-properties obviously can perform beautiful wallpaper
slideshows, but it's hard for the user to take advantage of that nice
feature, often having to resort to third-party solutions
(http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/07/crebs-slideshow-generator-gets-new-
features-but-requires-a-little-something-in-return%E2%80%A6/).

It would be easy and convenient to let the user press the shift or ctrl
keys in order to select several background images, which would then be
presented in a slideshow. Additionally, an extra button could be used to
let him / her save the selection as a slideshow.

[Bug 661664] [NEW] After performing a search, highlight the first result

2010-10-16 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

I just did a search for a program: it only returned one result, but it
was not immediately evident what I had to do since there was no
install button anywhere. I had to click the result to get the

I think when you perform a search the first item in the results lists
should be highlighted right away, to save a click and make it more
obvious what options you have with the results you get.

[Bug 553899] [NEW] Scrollbar arrows make the window look imbalanced

2010-04-02 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: light-themes

Using an up-to-date Lucid.

The new scrollbar's arrows don't show any difference with the window
background, making it look just as it the window had a huge border on
the right side. I think it would be much better if the arrows blended
with the scrollbar, instead of the window background.

mockup of what I propose.

[Bug 361370] Re: Link isn't created

2009-11-19 Thread David Prieto
I might have just discovered something relevant.

As you know, when you change a note's title the text in links pointing
to it change. If I have the sentence Thomas Jefferson wrote the
American [L]Declaration of Independence[/L], where the text between
[L][/L] points to another note:

1 - If I change the note's title to the Declaration of Independence,
the original sentence would change too: Thomas Jefferson wrote the
American [L]the Declaration of Independence[/L], where an additional
the has been added.

2 - If instead I remove the word American, the link disappears:
Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence.

3 - However, if I remove the word American AND then I change the
note's title to the Declaration of Independence, the original sentence
reads: Thomas Jefferson wrote [L]the Declaration of Independence[/L]

That is: instead of adding an additional the, Tomboy recognises the
article that was already there and adds it to the link. I am pretty sure
that this article recognition is probably intentional, but related to
the described problem.

[Bug 435692] [NEW] Wait for user icons and wallpaper before fading out

2009-09-24 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xsplash

I have noticed the new xsplash screen fades out nicely when you log in.

Sometimes the fade out happens when the user's wallpaper and desktop
icons are already loaded, which results in a very pleasant effect, like
saying your computer is ready to be used.

But other times the fade happens too soon, when the wallpaper and icons
haven't been loaded yet. Then those appear suddenly, without a fade or
anything, and that's quite ugly.

Can the splash always wait for the user's icons and wallpaper to be
loaded before fading out?

[Bug 435718] [NEW] Navigation and main panes have different borders

2009-09-24 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-store

Hi,

Great to see that the navigation pane has a border now. Yet, this new
border looks a bit different to the main pane's one, which may not be
noticeable at first sight but results in a something here is off
feeling.

In the attached screenshot you can see how:

-The borders' colour are different, being slightly darker in the navigation
pane.
-The navigation pane's corners have an angle while the main pane's ones are
rounded. Since this seems to make the scrollbar look a bit off, would it be
possible to have the main pane have the same border as the navigation pane?

[Bug 435727] [NEW] Border around location / search / main pane is unnecessary

2009-09-24 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-store

The location and search bars in software-store, as well as the main pane
have an unattractive border around them. This border surrounds the whole
group although they individually already have a border, and seems to
serve no purpose. Removing it would make the whole window feel tidier
and less cluttered.

I am attaching a screenshot showing how they look now, and a mockup
showing how they would look without it.

Additionally, this would allow us to align vertically the location and

[Bug 435102] [NEW] Don't switch to in progress automatically

2009-09-23 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-store

Newer versions of the Store switch to in progress when you install an
app. This, while informative, does not allow you to perform any useful
operations (except cancelling the operation, which shouldn't be too
usual) and forces extra clicks if the user wants to install any
additional packages, which users will probably want to do quite often.

Therefore, I think this behaviour should be reverted.

[Bug 435105] [NEW] Please remove inter-column lines

2009-09-23 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-store

Software-store shows lines between columns, both in the navigation pane
and in the main pane. This is useful when there are column headers too,
but since the store does not have those the lines don't serve any
purpose, so they could as well be removed.

[Bug 433917] Re: Main pane and its scrollbar produce doubled border

You're totally right Matt, I will try to do that in the future.

Anyway in response to your comment in the forum, I was observing other
gnome apps today and I noticed a lot of them use this method:

-Transmission
-Tomboy
-Banshee
-Empathy
-Totem
-Gedit
-F-spot
-Klavaro
-Baobab

The list goes on... actually, I think pretty much every gnome app I can
think of (some don't e.g. nautilus) follows this method. There must be a
reason for that, surely.

Right now, if you open software-store and start typing or press the

I'm not sure Matt... it all seems tremendously over the top to me. I
mean, having a fake pointer appear and open your menus for you? I really

Considering that the installed to approach shown in the mockup is
simpler, what advantages does your method offer?

we shouldn't offer an Open button, but just show people how to launch
the program themselves.

Yes, that makes sense when you think about it.

[Bug 433838] [NEW] Use an icon in the location bar

2009-09-21 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-store

Previous versions of the Store used to show a home icon in the first
button of the location bar, but now that icon has been replaced with
text (get free software and installed software respectively). I like
the fact that we can now discern in which section we are, but the text
just takes too much space.

I think a better approach would be to use the icon for that specific
section (that is, the icon for (get free software or installed
software). Please see the attached mockup.
