[Bug 115103] Re: Boost 1.34.0 released, plan to update?

2007-05-17 Thread David Thulson
When a library releases a non-bug-fix update after an Ubuntu release, is
the official Ubuntu policy that it will not be updated until the next
Ubuntu release? That is to say, except for bug fixes, the package
versions that are in Ubuntu release X are the only package versions that
will ever be in the Ubuntu release?

Also, this page about the package in gutsy still describes the package version
as 1.33.1 even though the source package appears to be 1.34.0:

[Bug 96430] Re: MASTER: Request for new-legacy nvidia drivers (9631)

2007-04-06 Thread David Thulson
This thread makes it appear that they are releasing 96xx series drivers as
"legacy" drivers:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=74a34b9834fb4572543ff4897cbec4b4&t=81668

Ben Collins, have you (or anyone else) actually talked to nvidia about
what they are planning or are we all just taking shots in the dark?

[Bug 96430] Re: MASTER: Request for new-legacy nvidia drivers (9631)

2007-04-05 Thread David Thulson
Timo Aaltonen (and Ben Collins I suppose), if nothing else the 9631 drivers are
4 months newer than the 7184 series. Here's another good post by an nvidia
employee where he mentions the 71xx "legacy branch" and a 96xx "legacy branch":
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=1208356&postcount=2

I read that as saying it'll be at least as well supported as the 71xx
series. I'll ask this again though: have you actually confirmed
anything with nvidia or are we all (still) just making guesses?

If you don't think nvidia will support the 96xx series like they have
the 71xx series, I guess I can't do anything about it. However, I agree
with cement_head. You can't claim that this "just works" or that it
makes life easy for non-power users.

[Bug 96430] Re: MASTER: Request for new-legacy nvidia drivers (9631)

2007-04-04 Thread David Thulson
We are using a development version to test it and provide feedback to
the Ubuntu team. While some of these comments may not be constructive,
isn't the whole point of releasing public betas to have this discussion
now with a few testers rather than later when it causes problems for
many more people? I think James has a good idea to have a single
nvidia-glx package that includes all 3 driver versions and uses the
correct version automatically. Perhaps it is not feasible for Feisty at
this point (or maybe even at all, I don't know), but I'd say it's worth
considering.

Feisty is scheduled to be released in 15 days, and I still don't see any
sign of the 96xx driver in the repos. I'm sure we would all like to
make sure it gets tested before Feisty is released. When can we expect
to see it in the repos?

2007-03-28 Thread David Thulson
I went ahead and asked nvidia:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=88867

They are supporting the 96xx series just like the 71xx series.

[Bug 96972] [Feisty] nvidia's 97xx driver dropped support for GeForce4 and below

2007-03-27 Thread David Thulson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx

I updated from edgy to feisty over the weekend on my laptop with a GeForce4
4200 Go card. While the installation of the proprietary nvidia drivers was
very slick, it appears that the nvidia 97xx driver series no longer supports
anything older than a GeForceFX:
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-9755/README/appendix-a.html

Note that GeForce2 - GeForce4 cards are still supported in the 96xx
series, which is much newer than the "legacy" 71xx series.

I guess I now have the option of either using the non-accelerated nv
driver, using a very old 71xx driver (which by the way is not supported
by the proprietary driver loader), or manually installing the nvidia
driver. I believe the proprietary driver system should detect which
driver is best suited for the users card and install that, rather than
blindly installing the 97xx series driver and breaking X for anyone with
an older card.

[Bug 74186] Re: Cannot build simple test app using boost serialization

2006-12-04 Thread David Thulson
I learned that the order of the command line arguments to g++ makes a
difference. The fedora user I mentioned earlier did not use my command line,
he built the sample code in Eclipse. Based on what Eclipse did, I found that
this works fine for me:
g++ -Wall -Werror -o Test main.cpp -lboost_serialization

Sorry for the false report. If I can, I'll mark it as closed.

[Bug 74186] Re: Cannot build simple test app using boost serialization

2006-12-04 Thread David Thulson
A Fedora 4 user running gcc 4.0.0 and boost 1.32 reported that my sample
code works fine. That isn't a perfect match since he has an older
version of boost, but it's at least worth noting.

[Bug 74186] Cannot build simple test app using boost serialization

2006-12-02 Thread David Thulson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libboost-serialization-dev

I am attempting to use boost serialization in Edgy Eft, but I cannot get
even a simple test to link properly. I had files to attach, but I don't
see how to do that. I get pages of linker errors like this:

// BEGIN error messages
/tmp/ccd96NVf.o: In function
`boost::archive::text_oarchive::text_oarchive(std::basic_ostream >&, unsigned int)':

 undefined reference to
`boost::archive::basic_text_oprimitive > >::~basic_text_oprimitive()'
// END error messages

Here is my sample main.cpp code:

// BEGIN main.cpp
#include
#include
#include
#include
#include
#include
#include
#include

int main(int argv, char** argc) {
  std::ofstream s("./test.txt", std::ios::out|std::ios::binary);
  boost::archive::text_oarchive oa(s);

  //oa << 5;

  return 0;
}
// END main.cpp

I am compiling/linking it with this command:

g++ -Wall -Werror -lboost_serialization -o Test main.cpp

I have everything in Synaptic named "libboost-*" installed already. It seems
like I need another library linked in, but can't figure out what it should be.
There is not libboost_archive library that I can see. I thought perhaps
"-lboost_filesystem" would do it, but that doesn't help. Another Ubuntu user
has reproduced this, so I believe I am either doing something dumb or there is
a bug in the library.

Please let me know what you think, thanks for the help.
