It doesn't freeze. The primary monitor is connected to the RX 580, and
2nd monitor is connected to the motherboard. If I unplug the 2nd monitor
thats using i915 there is no crash. Suspend and switching to TTY's work
if I unplug the 2nd monitor.

Are you sure your receiving reports? Are you talking about that popup
that that says Ubuntu has encountered and error and do you want to send
an error report or something? That doesn't happen.

I'm still crashing with the exact same issue with 42.0-2ubuntu1. If i
blacklist amdgpu at boot time and use the Intel monitor there is no
crashing but obviously it isn't ideal.

Re: [Bug 1966376] Re: Video playback not so great

2022-03-26 Thread Dean Fernandez
Unfortunately not.

I see it happen while playing back in MPV player as well.

I have attached a picture of the issue I am experiencing. You will see a
line across the screen.
This happens multiple times (about every 3 seconds or so)

Re: [Bug 1966376] Re: Video playback not so great

2022-03-25 Thread Dean Fernandez
Hi there!

Thank you so much for your quick response!

So my main video playback for saved media is VLC at the moment but I
definitely will be switching to MPV then thank you!

Other than that most if not every online video playback is just a bit
sticky at times and becomes slightly annoying while streaming content
(Youtube, Netflix etc.)

I hope this helps!
Apologies if I logged a bug report for the wrong reasons :/

Have a great day
Dean

[Bug 1961758] Re: Fail to run tpm2 command under ubuntu server 22.04

2022-03-01 Thread Dean Huffman
I can confirm the following steps work on 21.10 fresh install to enroll
a TPM2.0 for use with a LUKS encrypted partition but do not work on
22.04.

apt install clevis clevis-tpm2 clevis-luks clevis-udisks2 clevis-systemd
clevis-initramfs
udevadm trigger
clevis luks bind -d /dev/sda3 tpm2 '{"pcr_bank":"sha256","pcr_ids":"0,1,7"}'
update-initramfs -u -k 'all'

The command starting with "clevis" fails with the following under a
fresh install of 22.04:

root@svdivr-:/var/log/installer# clevis luks bind -d /dev/sda3 tpm2

[Bug 1396379] Re: installer uses first EFI system partition found even when directed otherwise

2022-02-11 Thread Brady Dean
Ubiquity invokes the grub-installer bash script to perform the actual
boot loader install stuff - it reads the the grub-installer/bootdev
debconf value to know where to install the bootloader.

There is some logic in there to find a default boot device which I
suspect is how it's picking the first partition of the first drive in
the machine, but I'm not very good at debugging shell scripts so I
couldn't find a reason as to why it would be using that logic in the
first place since grub-installer/bootdev is already set correctly.

[Bug 1396379] Re: installer uses first EFI system partition found even when directed otherwise

2022-01-06 Thread Brady Dean
I finally got ubiquity running in a debugger and it looks like the
previous code I mentioned is working fine. Ubiquity is correctly setting
the grub-installer/bootdev debconf value. The bug may lie in the grub-
installer program.

[Bug 1396379] Re: installer uses first EFI system partition found even when directed otherwise

2022-01-06 Thread Brady Dean
I believe the bug is in this function
https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/tree/ubiquity/plugins/ubi-
partman.py?h=applied/ubuntu/impish#n797 (I may have selected the wrong
branch here but the same code is present in the 21.10 live CD).

I reported #1591352 when I was in high school and since then I have
gotten a degree in CS and started a career in SE. Over the last 6-7
years I have periodically seen comments on this bug report and it's
crazy it hasn't been fixed yet.

In my debug log I submitted in 2016, it contains the line "No active
iterator for grub device entry." which means it was unable to use the
user's selected grub device entry. That function then goes on to select
the current disk ID... and promptly bricks all of our systems.

I tested with 21.10 in a VM and the same thing still happens.

A GTK issue shouldn't brick our systems but here we are.

[Bug 1936998] Re: e1000e blocks the boot process when it tried to write checksum to its NVM

2021-07-30 Thread Dean Anderson
I have a Dell Precision 7560, with this issue. I just installed the
proposed 5.10.0-1041 oem kernel package for testing.

While it did fix the boot issue, the e1000e driver is failing and I
cannot use the wired network interface.

Here is the dmesg output of `modprobe e1000e`:

[ 293.106059] e1000e: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver
[ 293.106059] e1000e: Copyright(c) 1999 - 2015 Intel Corporation.
[ 293.106442] e1000e :00:1f.6: Interrupt Throttling Rate (ints/sec) set to
dynamic conservative mode
[ 293.194836] e1000e :00:1f.6: The NVM Checksum Is Not Valid
[ 293.240151] e1000e: probe of :00:1f.6 failed with error -5

Previously I was working around the e1000e NVM issues by building the
e1000e module from the 3.8.7 source package from sourceforge. Applying
the patches from https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213667 to
the 5.10.1038-oem kernel source and re-building the e1000e module also
solved the issue.

Re: [Bug 1882462] Re: Displays wake up pre-maturely (likely driven by notification)

2020-07-01 Thread Dean Henrichsmeyer
OK, so an update. I removed fwupd from my system and I can confirm that
once I can get the displays to sleep, they stay that way as they should.

Now for the weird part... they won't go to sleep on their own. Doesn't
matter whether I'm in Wayland or Xorg - they won't go to sleep on their
own. DPMS is shown enabled with xset q in Xorg, settings are default in
terms of displays going to sleep, but they never do. If I do Super-L they
will go to sleep and wake right back up. If I then unlock the machine and
do Super-L again, they will go to sleep and stay that way. The only thing
changed was me apt removing fwupd.

This is a puzzle that refuses to be solved apparently. Should I file a new
bug for the current behavior?

Quick update. I do not have tlp installed and it also does it on Wayland.

[Bug 1882462] [NEW] Displays wake up pre-maturely (likely driven by notification)

2020-06-07 Thread Dean Henrichsmeyer
Public bug reported:

After a period of time, my displays go to sleep as they should. However,
I often come back to find that the displays are awake, the mouse pointer
is on a screen, but the screens are otherwise black. They're in this
weird "awake but not fully on" mode. At that point, they will not go
back to sleep as they should unless I fully awake them and let them go
back to sleep.

I don't know exactly what triggers the "half awake" but I suspect it's a
notification. The displays shouldn't turn on without a user action. It
wastes power and is clearly broken. I've attached a photo for an
example.

[Bug 1881601] Re: Fan excessively runs, even when idle

2020-06-04 Thread Dean Henrichsmeyer
To add some additional information... I upgraded the BIOS of the machine
to the latest, plugged in the TB display and rebooted to -33. The fan
spun up and it didn't pass beyond C3. I unplugged the TB display and it
then progressed all the way to C7 so it appears to be a TB issue. Kai-
Heng is looking into the TB issue. I've plugged the second display into
the HDMI port for now.

Colin - yeah, the underload powerstat was taken when I was in an active
Google Meet, handling docs, etc, at the same time. The machine would
have been using a considerable amount of CPU.

[Bug 1881601] Re: Fan excessively runs, even when idle

2020-06-03 Thread Dean Henrichsmeyer
So, I've spent some time on this, and I'll be honest, I don't have a lot
of answers. I know that -9 is awful. I've booted them all and ran
powerstat on all of them logged into the desktop with nothing extra
running. Attached is a tar file with the results of all of the kernels I
have installed, which includes the four you uploaded and two more.

I'm currently running -23 and so far it seems to be better than -33 but
don't take that for sure yet. I'll run this for a while and then move
over to -33 and see if there's a difference. I just wanted to update
this to thank you for the kernels and let you know I'm investigating.

2020-06-01 Thread Dean Henrichsmeyer
Public bug reported:

higher than it should, even when the machine is completely idle.

This happened with the 5.3 kernel and also with the 5.4 kernel during

release but it's back with a vengeance now.

[Bug 1876835] Re: black screen before login on 5.4 kernel

2020-05-06 Thread Dean
After i managed to reboot (REISUB). I've look at dmesg log, and at the
end of the log theres an error for the last boot

24.340774] kernel: amdgpu :04:00.0: AMD-Vi: Event logged
[IO_PAGE_FAULT domain=0x address=0x4a68002a0 flags=0x0070].

So i added iommu=soft to the grub.cfg and reboot booted into
5.4.0.29-generic kernel 5 times so far and it seem to be boot fine now

[Bug 1873369] Re: Python2 virtualenv installs broken pip command

2020-04-20 Thread Dean Wheatley
This affects running of Android Open Source Project (AOSP) Vendor Test
Suite (VTS) on Ubuntu 20.04.

$ virtualenv --version
virtualenv 20.0.13 from /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/virtualenv/__init__.py

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=956148 mentions steps
like:

[sudo] apt install python3-pip python3-virtualenv \p
pip3 install ipaddr \p
[sudo] cp $WHEEL_LOCATION/ipaddr-2.2.0-py2.py3-none-any.whl
/usr/share/python-wheels/ \p
[sudo] apt install python2.7 \p

In my environment:

$ pip3 install ipaddr
Requirement already satisfied: ipaddr in
/home/dwhea/.local/lib/python3.8/site-packages (2.2.0)

There isn't a ipaddr-2.2.0-py2.py3-none-any.whl file on my system.

Hoping for this to be fixed "out of the box".

[Bug 1871396] Re: can't access system settings

2020-04-07 Thread Dean
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1745345 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1745345

Just to add, I also get an error message sporadically popping up saying
"System program problem detected". Strange thing is that Budgie Desktop
Settings is accessible via right-click on desktop and selecting "Desktop
Settings", whereas selecting "Change Desktop Background" yields same
issue as highlighted in my original bug report.

[Bug 1869608] [NEW] Applications are not returning to the correct workspace

2020-03-29 Thread Dean Henrichsmeyer
Public bug reported:

When I wake my display, all applications are showing on the same
workspace, regardless of where they actually are. As soon as I switch
workspaces, they all go to the right workspaces as they should have
been. It's only when the display first wakes up.

[Bug 1847570] Re: PulseAudio automatically switches to HDMI sound output on login

2020-03-16 Thread Matthew M. Dean
I still get this issue even on focal, or atleast the fix is the same. I
have a USB headset and upon reboot it always switches to the USB headset
regardless if HDMI was selected last. It's a desktop so things don't get
unplugged.

[Bug 1864303] [NEW] Removing the e1000e module causes a crash

2020-02-22 Thread Dean Henrichsmeyer
Public bug reported:

I have a Lenovo x1 Carbon Gen5 and when it initially came out if you
left the onboard NIC (e1000e) module loaded it would suck CPU/battery
life so I have it removed in rc.local on boot.

In 5.4 (also happens on 5.4.0.15.18 which I'm running from proposed
right now), this is what happens when the module is unloaded:

[Bug 1853044] Re: 5.3.0-23-generic causes fans to spin when idle

2020-02-21 Thread Dean Henrichsmeyer
The kernel from Andrea has been stable for me (no GPU hangs). The fans
seem to come on a little more than they did with the previous kernel
from Colin but certainly it's much better than the vanilla 5.4 was.

[Bug 1861462] Re: Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 7th Gen doesn't suspend and resume

2020-02-21 Thread Dean Henrichsmeyer
In my case, this turned out to be the kernel crashing when the e1000e
module was removed. I rmmod'd that in rc.local because when I originally
purchased the laptop, that module would suck power and battery life.

When I stop removing that module, the kernel doesn't crash and suspend,
shutdown, etc, all work as designed. I can file a separate bug about
that crash if you prefer or paste the crash here.

[Bug 1859031] [NEW] Cursor freezes with synergy software kvm

2020-01-09 Thread Dean Anderson
Public bug reported:

I'm using the synergy software KVM to share a mouse and keyboard between
two machines, with my Ubuntu workstation as the client. When attempting
to drag-and-drop within Qt apps, the mouse cursor will freeze for
several seconds. Cursor freezes also occur intermittently as well. I
have an issue report for synergy as well: https://github.com/symless
/synergy-core/issues/6487

This issue seems to be a regression related to update 1.6.4-3ubuntu0.2.
The current workaround is to pin all libx11 packages to the previous
(0.1) versions.

2020-01-07 Thread Dean Henrichsmeyer
This also affects 5.4.0-9-generic - I see the same behavior on today's
focal.

Just to close the loop on this, I used the test kernels and the problem
went away.

[Bug 1846398] Re: Fractional scaling has significant visible tearing on a 4k display

2019-12-02 Thread Dean Henrichsmeyer
Just to provide more information - my initial report was incorrect. I
did in fact see the tearing on the laptop display. It seems whenever
you're using non-integer scaling with Xorg, that's what happens.

I do not, I'm scaled at 200% and I've disabled all experimental-

[Bug 1853044] [NEW] 5.3.0-23-generic causes fans to spin when idle

2019-11-18 Thread Dean Henrichsmeyer
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to 5.3.0-23-generic the fans in my machine don't stop
running. They always sound like something is utilizing CPU - even with
no applications running after boot.

If I boot back to 5.3.0-19-generic it's fine.

My microcode version is reported as 0xd4 and iucode-tool reports:

iucode-tool: system has processor(s) with signature 0x000506e3

Let me know if you need anything else.

[Bug 1846398] [NEW] Fractional scaling has significant visible refreshes on a 4k display

2019-10-02 Thread Dean Henrichsmeyer
Public bug reported:

On my laptop, fractional scaling seems fine, including watching a
YouTube video. It has a quad HD display.

Enabling fractional scaling on my desktop which is attached to a single
4k display, fractional scaling isn't usable. The video appears to be
constantly refreshing and not using the same acceleration as if I just
run at 100% or 200%.
