[Bug 1080187] Re: CUPS reports 'Filter failed' and 'Idle - Can't detect file type' on printing a test page.

2013-03-07 Thread Diggory
Does a different driver (PPD) help? I had this problem with a PPD
downloaded from the Canon website, but the one supplied with Ubuntu
worked fine.

[Bug 1132690] [NEW] adobe-flashplugin installs without license agreement

2013-02-25 Thread Diggory
Public bug reported:

This is a policy issue more than anything else: the plugin installs
without requiring the user to accept the Adobe Flash Player End User
License Agreement. I know this because I have not accepted this licence
on this installation of Ubuntu, because I do not wish to use it (and was
surprised to find it being installed (as a dependency) without my
agreement).

I don't know what's going on here, but I don't think software requiring
accepting the terms of an EULA should be installed without explicit user
consent.

[Bug 1132690] Re: adobe-flashplugin installs without license agreement

2013-02-25 Thread Diggory
On the Adobe website this is an obvious step: click the respective
button. In the case of a package which can be installed automatically as
a dependency there is no such obvious step to accept the EULA (I
wouldn't have even known the package was being installed had I not
spotted it downloading). In my case the primary package I installed was
Opera, but I don't consider that relevant.

It's not really my place to say, but I would suggest some kind of prompt
at installation time (like Debian does on some packages) may be the best
solution, or alternatively only enabling the respective repository after
prompting the user on the EULA, or some such.

For what its worth, my real gripe is that I prefer to choose on a case-
by-case basis which non-free (by DFSG terms) software I install, and
since I had chosen not to install Adobe flash I was not happy about it
being installed behind-my-back, so to speak. However accepting or not
accepting Adobe's EULA is a close enough proxy that it doesn't seem
worth worrying about the difference.

[Bug 1132690] Re: adobe-flashplugin installs without license agreement

2013-02-25 Thread Diggory
I disagree that dependency handling is to blame, but that's just my 2ยข.
No idea about the other packages, but agree that handling things
uniformly makes sense.

By the way you may have misjudged the flashplugin-nonfree package: from
what I remember, it doesn't install flash directly, but has to be run
from the command-line to do so, and it probably asks the licence then.

Happened to me a couple more times, the last while running nouveau

but nothing would respond (even VT-switching). I'll try running memtest,

[Bug 1060817] [NEW] bash bashrc and inputrc niceties

2012-10-03 Thread Diggory
Public bug reported:

There's a few tweaks I always make to improve usability on a new
installation; here are some which in my opinion aught to be provided by
default:

Add the following to .bashrc to make sudoedit and a few other commands work
nicely:
--
# Set these to the editors you'd like to use in text and graphical environments
respectively:
export EDITOR=nano # or vi, vim, emacs
export VISUAL=gedit # or kwrite, kate
--

Also add the following since it makes 'git log' and a few other programs
interact with the terminal better (mouse wheel scrolling, doesn't mess up shell
history):
export LESS=R

Add the following to .inputrc for easy history searching with โ†‘/โ†“ arrows:
-
\e[A:history-search-backward
\e[B:history-search-forward
-
(see http://askubuntu.com/questions/59846/bash-history-search-partial-up-arrow)

Note that I can't guarantee there's no nasty side effects, but I've been
using all the above for a months-years without problems.

[Bug 393400] Re: thinkpad_ec.ko from tp-smapi-modules-2.6.28-13-generic doesn't replace version in linux-image-2.6.28-13-generic

2010-05-24 Thread Diggory
Hi,
It's not still an issue for me, since I haven't had to use the force_io=1
option for a while. I don't know about the module searching priority; could
just be that modprobe simply takes the first module it finds. I think my point
though was that when installing a user-generated kernel module it should
replace standard modules with the same name rather than go alongside them, so
as not to confuse users like me not realising that a different module was
loaded. I can't really see a general solution to this though, other than the
user-made module replacing the original file (which may not be desirable since
it belongs to a package).

Sorry, I was thinking this was a packaging problem, but maybe not, in
which case you may want to report it upstream or just forget about it
for now.

[Bug 474249] [NEW] LVDS backlight doesn''t turn on after going into powersaving mode (dual-monitor)

2009-11-04 Thread Diggory
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

I'm using the following nouveau, explicitly enabled in xorg.conf.
ii libdrm-nouveau12.4.14-1ubuntu1
Userspace interface to nouveau-specific kernel DRM services -- r
ii nouveau-kernel-source 0.0.15+git20090823-0ubuntu1
DKMS source for the nouveau kernel modules
ii xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
1:0.0.10~git+20090823+569a17a-0ubuntu1 X.Org X server -- Nouveau display
driver (experimental)

It works and supports xrandr display hotplugging (currently running LVDS
1680x1050 and VGA 1280x1024, enabled as a separate screen after kde loads).
Once the display back-light has turned off (power-saving), it doesn't turn on
again properly on the LVDS screen (VGA screen is fine but I'm not sure the
power saving even works on this one). To turn the backlight back on I can
VT-switch and return to X, or set the backlight brightness via the kde
power-management applet. If I use the keyboard Fn+.. brightness shortcuts
(might be hardware shortcuts; using a T61) the backlight gets turned off again
(can still just-about see content on the screen).

I was previously using the nvidia closed-source driver which worked fine
(apart from lack of xrandr support...).

It auto-suspended fine the other day from kde 4.2. So either
intermittant or it's been fixed somehow; might as well presume it's no
longer an issue unless it happens again.

I guess you marked it incomplete due to lack of info, but I don't really
know how to get any more info than dmesg / X.org logs.

[Bug 356223] Re: [LENOVO 64574UG] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2009-08-14 Thread Diggory
I guess I'll have to test again, if indeed it's the same situation now.
I haven't had the laptop auto-suspend much recently, although it did the
other day with no problem, from gnome. When it happened before I was
using kde 4.2.

[Bug 412860] Re: Xorg not responding to input

2009-08-13 Thread Diggory
I've possibly been hit by the same bug... not been able to track it down much
yet. It may be different because the symtoms are different:
Everything starts fine, then inactive applications stop responding to mouse
clicks. Active applications vary, sometimes fine, sometimes they don't work
either, at least twice the only thing that worked was scrolling down with the
mouse wheel (couldn't click or scroll back up).
Keyboard input has always been fine.

I noticed the OP has a thinkpad X61; my machine is a T61 so may well
have similar hardware. I'm running jaunty with latest updates; nvidia
binary driver.

Still got to work out what's actually causing this; did think it was kde
4.2, but xfce had the same problem.

[Bug 398432] [NEW] nvidia driver, extremely slow OpenGL: nvidia-kernel-common not installed

2009-07-12 Thread Diggory
Public bug reported:

Recently I had extremely poor openGL performance using the nvidia driver
(much worse than software rendering should be). I checked dmesg and
Xorg.0.log but didn't find anything, but soon found nvidia-kernel-common
wasn't installed. Installing it immediately fixed the issue, but really
it should at least be recommended by nvidia-glx-... or something so this
usually happens automatically.

I have found in the past that I've wanted to reinstall or temporarily
remove some nvidia driver packages though, so having nvidia packages
only recommend one another and not depend on each other is useful.

Thanks,
Diggory

[Bug 393400] [NEW] thinkpad_ec.ko from tp-smapi-modules-2.6.28-13-generic doesn't replace version in linux-image-2.6.28-13-generic

2009-06-29 Thread Diggory
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.28-13-generic

Hi,

I was trying to load the tp_smapi module (built from tp-smapi-source with m-a),
and getting the following error in dmesg:
thinkpad_ec: cannot claim io ports 0x1600-0x161f

I found this required me to pass the force_io=1 parameter to thinkpad_ec
(exactly why isn't clear, since I'm using a T61, but that's another thing), but
this command wouldn't work:
# sudo modprobe thinkpad_ec force_io=1
# dmesg
thinkpad_ec: Unknown parameter `force_io'

I eventually found this was because I had two thinkpad_ec modules:
# dlocate thinkpad_ec
tp-smapi-modules-2.6.28-11-generic:
/lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/extra/thinkpad_ec.ko
linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic:
/lib/modules/2.6.28-11-generic/kernel/ubuntu/misc/thinkpad_ec.ko
linux-image-2.6.28-13-generic:
/lib/modules/2.6.28-13-generic/kernel/ubuntu/misc/thinkpad_ec.ko
tp-smapi-modules-2.6.28-13-generic:
/lib/modules/2.6.28-13-generic/extra/thinkpad_ec.ko

Thus I can work around the problem by refering directly to the module from
tp-smapi-modules-2.6.28-13-generic:
# sudo insmod /lib/modules/2.6.28-13-generic/extra/thinkpad_ec.ko force_io=1
# sodo modprobe tp_smapi

I guess this .ko file should have been used by modprobe though, not the
version from linux-image-2.6.28-13-generic? (I also installed tp-smapi-
source version 0.40-5, but this is probably irrelevent.)

[Bug 373672] [NEW] prints blank line in badram output mode

2009-05-08 Thread Diggory
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: memtest86+

My machine has 4G of RAM which definitely has bad parts. Running
memtest86+ with the output mode on the default, summary, or on
details prints lots of output (just over 300 errors counted so it's
impossible to see all the output). If I set the output mode to badram
and re-run test 5 (which reports these errors), memtest86+ prints a
blank line (the line afterwards has a red background but is also blank).
Hence I can't find out what badram parameters I need to give my kernel
:(

[Bug 352939] [NEW] kpackagekit error dialog hides error message

2009-04-01 Thread Diggory
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kpackagekit

When I click on a .deb package to install it, I get an error where two error
dialogs show up; the first saying:
  Unknown error - ...
  Unknown error, please rep...
  More information is availab...
(with a details button)

And the second dialog:
  KPackageKit
  Sorry, an error occurred
shows on top, and closes both dialogs when I click OK, thus preventing me from
clicking the details button in the underneath dialog to see what the actual
error was. I think I know what the problem is, but the point is that the error
message should be readable.

Using 9.04 beta with kpackagekit version 0.4-0ubuntu4.

Probably a security breach, I suspect a contaminated package either in
the repos or an internet interception. I have stopped using Ubuntu
due to this and various arp flood attacks after posting to the forums.
 Excellent job looking into this.

[Bug 54273] Re: USB device not accepting address: error -110

2008-09-21 Thread Jayotis Diggory
Confirmed controller handoff problems between ehci_hcd uhci_hcd
causing

device descriptor read/64, error -71
device not accepting address 2, error -71

Intrepid kernel 2.6.27-3 seems to have corrected the error on this
system.

error 110 looks to be a hardware connection issue, from what I've been
reading in other website posts while searching for error 71. But
defiantly give Intrepid a try before switching cable/ports and cold
boots.
