[Bug 705988] Re: [master] Untrusted packages can not be installed

2011-12-18 Thread doo
Workaround by Steven Major (semajor) from
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+question/172657:

in a terminal, submit:
  sudo apt-get update

There will be an error like this:
GPG error: http://software.rc.fas.harvard.edu natty/ Release: The
following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not
available: NO_PUBKEY

where is some string of digits and letters.

'' is the missing key. To provide this key, submit:
  sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys

---
This way of stopping "untrusted software" is harmful in 3 ways:
1. User is not aware what these keys really mean, so it contributes nothing to
security.
2. It stops updating the whole system because of one questionable source.
3. It reminds of ancient mswindows idiocy to dictate what software is good for
user and what is not.

A GUI warning for user to think again before installing, is maximum that
is still ethical, imho.

[Bug 482593] [NEW] Booting problem after force quit of updates

2009-11-14 Thread DOO-SHIK JANG
Public bug reported:

After I quited the updating by force, my ubuntu doesn't boot.

I get the following message on the black screen, then the prompt is
blinking underneath of the message;

"One or more of the mounts list in /etc/fstab cannot yet be mounted:
(ESC for recovery shell)
/ : waiting for /dev/disk/by-uuid/a64e0a5a-72a0-4204-97dd-d5569d118ade
/tmp: waiting for(null)
swap: waiting for UUID=9024457f-76b1-470e-90f7-c2a758cbf677"

Could anyone help me what to do?

I have a 8.10 cd with me. It could be booted with this, but I can't get
in to my computer or document folder etc.

Please help me!
