[Bug 1840612] [NEW] Software Center offers multiple version without explanation

2019-08-19 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 19.04
Gnome-software: 3.30.6-2ubuntu4.19.04.1

By default Ubuntu Software offers applications both from the ubuntu
repos and the snap store. that's fine but confusing. The two packages
can have different versions and descriptions, or the same version and
the same descriptions. This is all very confusing for anyone who doesn't
understand the difference.

I'm not going to suggest a specific solution, but here are some
thoughts.

- some key differences could be highlighted in tool-tip text
- the 'snap-store' text could be made into a button like the 'channel and
'license buttons. An explanatory text could be kept there.
- if Canonical thinks it's unimportant which source is used (which is implied
by not giving any caveats) then why not just roll the multiple packages into
one entry (like the current multiple versions available) and make the 'source'
text into an 'any' button which offers a choice of source. The newest version
(regardless of source) could be offered by default.

PS. it's inconsistent that the option to include snappy is a setting in
the Gnome-software package and cannot be set in the Software & Updates
package.

** Affects: gnome-software (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Description changed:

my recent upgrade are simply gone without any notice or replacement.

[Bug 791993] [NEW] file-roller mangles non English filenames without warning

2011-06-02 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

What happens
Because of the inherent limitations in the ZIP archive format as described at
http://superuser.com/questions/60379/linux-zip-tgz-filenames-encoding-problem
it is not possible to encode file names with non-english characters so they
deflate with the correct names.

If the problem is only with files in subfolders it is quite possible
that I won't even see the problem until I try to extract the files - at
which time it is too late to find the files original name.

What I expect
I expect to be warned (at least the first time) if this is going to happen.
Even better file-roller could suggest an archive format which will not mangle
the letters.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04
Package: file-roller 2.32.2-0ubuntu0.1

[Bug 433851] Re: Authentication dialog doesn't get focus

2011-05-22 Thread Duncan Lithgow
The reason it's marked as NEW in software center is because this issue
has been identified as being caused (or at least solvable) in the
policykit package - as far as the software-center package goes it is
currently unsure or not researched whether this can be solved there. The
status of this bug in software-center has changed several times. You can
see a full log of changes by clicking the link 'See full activity log'
at the bottom of the comments list.

Also I notice that this is only marked as affecting 8 people - please
remember to add yourself if you're affected by this. It helps developers
prioritize their time.

[Bug 322314] Re: Automatically connect on startup setting confusing - users may expect this to run Empathy on login

2011-05-18 Thread Duncan Lithgow
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: empathy

  Ubuntu 9.04
  Empathy 2.25.4-1ubuntu1

Empathy IM setting 'Edit Preferences Automatically connect on

instead it connect empathy to the internet when empathy is started.

- Maybe change wording to 'connect to internet when empathy starts'
+ Maybe change wording to 'connect to internet when empathy starts'? and
+ make a setting for starting empathy on login
+
+ Added 2011-05-17:
+
+ - Please note that the Gnome bug has gone a bit off track into a different
issue. I hope that is sorted now.
+ - With the new Unity interface this problem is even greater. Before that the
easiest way to add an application to session startup was to drag-n-drop it from
the menu into the Startup Application window. Now there is no menu by default.
How do other applications deal with this?

[Bug 775640] Re: [dash] When 'exo-utils' package is installed, opening files from the dash fails

[Bug 714259] Re: Printer driver for Samsung CLP-510 (Splix)

2011-04-26 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Now that I've corrected a typo (thanks Till, sorry about that) it works
as expected. It looks like this fix works for most people - anyone here
know how to make a deb diff patch?

Attached is my example of the problem, maybe it's easier to see what's
happening in my example of an index page.

[Bug 770386] [NEW] Samsung CLP-510, output reprints over itself

2011-04-25 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

When printing multiple page documents (except txt files I think) the
files content gets reprinted on each page with an offset of about 6
centimetres. So the further you get into the file the more layers of
printing there are. This has been a problem in 10.10 as long as I
remember, I don't think there was a problem in 10.04. I will try to add
a scan of a page so you can see what I mean.

I assume this is a driver problem as the same files print without
trouble from Windows 7 and XP

[Bug 742571] Re: [FFe] Please sync gramps 3.2.5 from Debian Unstable

2011-03-27 Thread Duncan Lithgow
I would have thought that a bugfix release should automatically be
packaged whenever possible.

According to http://gramps-project.org/2010/10/gramps-3-2-4-released/
There were more than 120 bug fix commits against gramps32 since the
release of 3.2.3.

and for 3.2.5 Highlights of fixes in this release include:

fix Gramps so it again runs with Python 2.5
write all notes and sources to gedcom files
cli fixes
GeneWeb and LegacyGedcom fixes
NarrativeWeb fixes
memory leak fixes
various other small fixes
many translation updates

[Bug 742571] Re: [FFe] Please sync gramps 3.2.5 from Debian Unstable

2011-03-25 Thread Duncan Lithgow
I can confirm this. The current version in the universe repository for
both Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 (alpha1) is gramps (3.2.3) (ubuntu version
-1 in 10.10 and -4 in 11.04)

There is a downloadable .deb specifically packaged for Ubuntu 10.10 at
the Gramps Sourceforge website. Maybe you would add that version to your
PPA?

Gramps in Ubuntu hasn't been updated for 19 weeks - that's a while,
looks like it needs an active maintainer.

[Bug 212588] Re: Does not start

as I assume these problems have ironed themselves out. If you're still
seeing problems feel free to reopen this bug or file a new one.

[Bug 638321] Re: Shotwell accepts f-spot tags with commas ('), but they are separators in Shotwell

2011-02-20 Thread Duncan Lithgow
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: shotwell

This is a bug about the way Shotwell handles importing a batch of photos
which have previously been managed by F-spot.

In F-spot there is no problem with having commas in the tag names, so a
tag like Surname, Firstname is fine. When this tag is imported into
Shotwell it keeps the tag as Surname, Firstname but as soon as you apply
it to anything creates two new tags one called Surname and one called
Firstname. This quickly starts to make a real mess of my tagging system
where I have lots of people in the Surname, Firstname format.

  Workarounds:
  * I can manually edit all the tags which include commas before I apply them
to any pictures. But that assumes I'm aware of the problem in advance.
  * I can fix it up afterwards. But I can only remove tags from one picture at
a time, tags can't be edited as a batch operation for some reason.

  Solutions:
  * What about if Shotwell collected all the tags and presented the ones
including commas, explained the problem and asked that they be renamed.
  * Shotwell could use a different separator.
  * Shotwell might be able to encode commas found in imported tags in a way
which made them different from the tag separators.

Anyway, I think this is going to be a big headache for people who want
to migrate from F-spot to Shotwell if it isn't fixed.

  ProblemType: Bug
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10
  Package: shotwell 0.7.2-0ubuntu1

[Bug 718048] [NEW] failed network upgrade to 10.10

2011-02-13 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I've no idea why I can' upgrade. I get the message:

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by
held packages.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the
'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the
bug report.

I've checked and there are no unofficial channels even listed in my
system. After this failed the first time I went through and un-installed
all KDE and XFCE application and then ran the computer janitor to clean
up the leftovers.

There is no special hurry to upgrade this machine so let's see if we can
find the cause before I do a clean install.

[Bug 668892] [NEW] Even when running Ubuntu Desktop Edition, mutter is on and slowing things down

2010-10-30 Thread Duncan Lithgow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mutter

Sorry if this bug is messy, I will come back and tidy it shortyly. My
graphics is not refreshing.

I installed the Unity package to try out this new thing, and it was okay
but slow. So I logged out and while loggin in chose to go back to the
normal Desktop Edition - however everything is still painfully slow. The
screen doesn't refresh until I grab the window and move it. Under
