[Bug 796238] Re: No participants list is shown in multi-person conversations

2012-03-05 Thread Duncan McGreggor
I have just encountered this same error. Here's what happened:

1) I reset my alias in jabber
2) it didn't take effect, so I killed the empathy processes
(/usr/lib/empathy/empathy-chat and empathy)
3) I restarted empathy by clicking on the Unity chat menu
4) my new alias did show up in jabber, but
5) the room participants no longer showed up in IRC or jabber

Note that when first joining a room, I see a quick flash of the
participants sidebar, and then it goes away. It's up for all of the
tiniest fraction of a second.

I'll post a screenshot...

This sort of thing has been discussed, particularly at the last Ubuntu
Developer Summit (2010, in Orlando).

For now, this is a low-priority task for the uTouch team -- however! We
will support community contributions for this. If someone wants to
tackle this, we will provide guidance and will accept any excellent
additions (patches/branches) to the GEIS or Grail APIs needed in order
to support this.

[Bug 742582] Re: Add touch gesture events

2011-04-01 Thread Duncan McGreggor
I would like to make this very clear to everyone (not addressing the bug fix
patches, just the addition of touch gestures):
 * the change is a result of a missed bit of functionality that was buried in
the design document
 * Henrik has addressed the nature of the impact on other components here,
which is minimal
 * no one noticed the requirement until Jason attempted to get immediate touch
feedback when implementing MT in Unity
 * Unity requires this
 * if anyone has any problems with this change, they need to take it up with

 Sorry. That doesn't play. Only the sabdfl gets to be sabdfl. I don't have
 an
 opinion on the patch itself, but this is completely inappropriate and
 disrespectful of the release team and the role it plays in Ubuntu.

Then you have misunderstood my intent: there are layers of dependencies
here (code, designs, features -- ultimately directed by and signed off
by Mark). We are simply doing our jobs to make sure they are fulfilled.
He wants this stuff in there, and if you guys don't approve, for
whatever reason (yes, I know it's been approved now), then that's who
you need to take it up with.

I'm wasn't being disrespectful, only letting you know that we had
reached the end of the line: we had given you all the info, explained
the reasons for everything, and are simply not in a position to address
anything beyond that.

Hope that clarifies that bullet point.

[Bug 742582] Re: Add touch gesture events

2011-04-01 Thread Duncan McGreggor
Scott,

I owe you an apology.

After chatting with those in the know, I see now that I basically walked
all over the release team's governance charter. I extend my deepest
apologies for this.

As I now understand things, it is you all in the Release Team who
provide the ultimate guidance on the release of Ubuntu, and that whether
or not my comments were intended as disrespectful or insulting, they
were, in fact, just that.

On a side note, in the face of this, you exhibited amazing restraint and
provided the space necessary for me to confer with my peers, get
educated, and reflect on the proper context here.

Thanks!

And what's more, thanks for all of your efforts and work in helping
Ubuntu get released each cycle :-)

[Bug 742555] Re: Unity can't get touch the touch initialization signals from GEIS

2011-03-30 Thread Duncan McGreggor
** Description changed:

  Feature Freeze Exception:

  The current uTouch stack does not have any gesture events that fire when
  touches begin. Touches must move to cross a threshold before emitting
  any events. However, gestures on touch begin is a necessary
  functionality for Natty Unity work. The related branches include the
  addition of a new touch gesture type.

  When Unity doesn't get an init signal from GEIS we simply cannot perform
  any actions when the user presses but has not yet performed a gesture.
  Several touch specifications call for such behavior, these include:

-  * 3 finger touch to show the window handles
+  * 3 finger drag to show the window handles
   * alt-tab
   * tap then hold

  (among others).

- The most critical of these is 3 finger touch to show the window handles.
+ The most critical of these is 3 finger drag to show the window handles.

  This new code is in ppa:utouch-team/unstable and is being actively used
  and developed against by the Unity team.

  The changes necessitate enlarging the event type bitmask inside geis, so
  regression risk is small but non-trivial. The addition of the touch
  gesture itself is an ABI addition (no API changes, and no ABI
  breakages).

[Bug 742555] [NEW] Unity can't get touch the touch initialization signals from GEIS

2011-03-25 Thread Duncan McGreggor
Public bug reported:

When Unity doesn't get an init signal from GEIS we simply cannot perform
any actions when the user presses but has not yet performed a gesture.
Several touch specifications call for such behavior, these include:

 * 3 finger touch to show the window handles
 * alt-tab
 * tap then hold

(among others).

The most critical of these is 3 finger touch to show the window handles

As reported in bug #742555, Unity is not getting what it needs from

This been a little discussion around this bug. I want to wait before we
push into the package. It seemed like there was consensus on this fix,
and now there might not be. I will retarget the bug fix to beta 2.

[Bug 728643] Re: Kinetic scrolling implementation continues to send scroll event after physical action has stopped

2011-03-04 Thread Duncan McGreggor
Before we leave this bug behind, I'd like to formulate a plan of action.

Chase, you said the following:

The goal is to replace X input module scroll events with utouch gesture
events. These events can know about the window hierarchy so they
terminate when a window is closed. The gestures also have a start and a
stop, allowing the utouch client to stop handling a scroll gesture when
the tab has closed until the gesture ends.

In brief, how will this be accomplished?

With your above paragraph and the answer to my question, I'll start a
blueprint for discussion/planning at UDS.

Yeah, we debated this quite a bit (not heatedly... more

It's a tricky problem to solve generally, but I'm with you Ricardo...

[Bug 662245] Re: bzr crashed with IndexError in git_to_bzr()

2010-10-17 Thread Duncan McGreggor
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 660540 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/660540

Hrm, interesting. I added a pdb set_trace call to check this out. Looks
like a string is being iterated over in a rather strange way. I can't
imagine that 'refs/heads/master' is intended to be iterated over by-
character. Rather, by a split on '/'.

Here's the interactive pdb session:

(Pdb) list
 26 the Bazaar branch names as values.
 27
 28 bazaar_names = {}
 29 for ref_name in sorted(ref_names):
 30 import pdb;pdb.set_trace()
 31  - parts = ref_name.split('/')
 32 if parts[0] == 'refs':
 33 parts.pop(0)
 34 category = parts.pop(0)
 35 if category == 'heads':
 36 bazaar_name = self._git_to_bzr_name(parts[-1])
(Pdb) ref_name
'/'
(Pdb) ref_names
'refs/heads/master'
(Pdb) sorted(ref_names)
['/', '/', 'a', 'a', 'd', 'e', 'e', 'e', 'f', 'h', 'm', 'r', 'r', 's', 's',
's', 't']
(Pdb)

I added the following just before the 'for' loop:

if not isinstance(ref_names, list):
ref_names = [ref_names]

This resulted in another exception, however:

  File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/bzrlib/revision.py, line 93, in
_check_properties
(value, name))
ValueError: invalid property value {'refs/heads/master': 'trunk'} for
'branch-nick'

After some hacking around, it seems that even though git_to_bzr() is
returning a dict, when a string is expected. In particular, check out
the following from a pdb session:

(Pdb) down
 /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/bzrlib/plugins/fastimport/bzr_commit_handler.py(227)build_revision()
- self.branch_ref)
(Pdb) list
222
223 def build_revision(self):
224 rev_props =
self._legal_revision_properties(self.command.properties)
225 if 'branch-nick' not in rev_props:
226 rev_props['branch-nick'] =
self.cache_mgr.branch_mapper.git_to_bzr(
227  - self.branch_ref)
228 self._save_author_info(rev_props)
229 committer = self.command.committer
230 who = self._format_name_email(committer[0], committer[1])
231 message = self.command.message
232 if not _serializer_handles_escaping:

rev_props['branch-nick'] should be getting a string assigned to it, but
instead, it's getting a dict.

I hacked around this (badly) just to get things working by returning the
following from git_to_bzr:

return bazaar_names.values()[0]

Hope this helps...

[Bug 637106] Re: XInput single-touch events aren't always filtered

2010-10-14 Thread Duncan McGreggor
Chase, I'm a little unclear on what the two distinct issues are: could
you explicitly state them? And indicate which issue this ticket should
be addressed to? We can then create a second ticket for the other one.

At least partially, it sounds to me that the issue that MacRules/Vincent
is having may be driver/firmware-related? I haven't seen this problem on
supported hardware list at all (since I calibrated my N-trig-based
Lenovo); have you? Every touch I make one the screen with one finger
results in a movement of the cursor to the new touch point.

However, Chase you mentioned a fix that is targeted for Natty. Was that
in response to this part of MacRules/Vincent's comment:

The other thing is, when I use the driver that does not send the mtY and mtX
(both) then this issue also does not occur.
So linking all that, I would think that when a touch is performed, some
mechanism checks if both mtX and mtY are there and if so, tries to determine
something about a simple touch that couses a different interpretaton to X then
expected.

Chase, to be explicit:
 * do you think that MacRules/Vincent's issue is grail-related?
 * if there are two issues at play in his comment, is one of them appropriately
associated with this bug?
 * if so, which one?
 * if one or more of his issues aren't grail-related, where should they be
filed?
 * are there files or any command output that

MacRules/Vincent: on the calibration side of things, my N-trig device
was also consistent with the placement of the cursor (position-wise).
However, many (most) times it would simply not interpret a touch unless
I pressed very hard. Calibrating with our N-trig calibration tool
(written by Rafi Rubin) fixed all of that for me. Does your
GeneralTouch Win7 TwoFinger device have a calibration tool for Linux?
If they only have a Windows calibration tool and you have a Windows
partition, I'd highly recommend running it. If there's even a chance
that it could fix this issue, it's worth pursing.

If after calibration you are still experiencing the issue, and it's a
problem with grail, once grail is fixed, you'll be able to test it out
simply by adding the appropriate PPA to your apt sources. No need to
upgrade your whole system (which isn't actually an option right now,
since the debian sync doesn't finish until December... though it should
be starting nowish).

To be clear, though: our target for Maverick was publicly announced to a
very limited initial set of 4-touch hardware. This list of devices has
already doubled in size (including several 10+ touch devices), so we're
making great progress. For supported devices, uTouch is most definitely
working.

Let's see if we can get your hardware supported as well :-) (Henrik and
Chase have been working to get other 2-touch devices supported).

[Bug 639734] Re: Pressing buttons on quanta hardware is very hard and imprecise

2010-09-30 Thread Duncan McGreggor
Linus, toolkit support for gestures is on the roadmap for Natty. We're
going to be discussing this (and related topics) with community members
at UDS, the last week of October in Orlando, FL. If you can't make it,
please note that remote participation is possible, complete with live
audio casting over the internet.

That being said, there are a couple things already being done:

 1) we've got a project called ginn (hosted on Launchpad) that will
support a partial set of gestures for some application actions (e.g.,
mapping to key-press combos for zooming, rotating)

 2) Cody Russell has been working on a branch of evince that adds
gesture support to PDF documents by using GEIS (utouch-geis on
Launchpad). GTK support likely won't land right away, as there is still
a lot of work that needs to happen in Xorg first. However, as a
temporary solution, Cody's going to be creating a wrapper library that
folks can use in the interim. As soon as he's tweaked evince some more,
he's gong to work on eog. At that point, he should have a nice blog post
ready to go, with a tutorial for folks who want to dive into MT app
development work. If you're hard-core, feel free to jump in and look at
his evince code (Cody's LP id is bratsche).

3) Qt is doing active development on MT and gestures. Their work is
going to be made public soon (we're all waiting eagerly in
anticipation). We will also be having sessions at UDS to discuss
uTouch/Qt integration.

To clarify Stephen Webb's comment: uTouch is not currently a consumer of
geis. The only consumer is some some GTK prototyping that Cody Russell
is doing in a branch of IDO. Nothing in universe or main uses geis.

 samples from usbmon, so that we can confirm the thing is consistent with the
 older devices.

Rafi, is there a way to perform this and the task above in the general
case (so that apport hooks can push the info up to LP)?

In fact... I've just created a ticket for this.

Original context: bug #626769
Bug for this task: bug #635112
