[Bug 1807264] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Video Crash on Suspend/Hibernate

2019-06-24 Thread EDEMPCO
You asked the same questions I did, but the answer doesn't help. 16.04
was the last version and it's kernel was 4.10.0.27.30. Going back,
doesn't help. There is something in the 18.04 version that overrides the
kernel. Read my responses above. I've used almost every kernel in
between and currently, I'm using 5.0.10. I may jump to the most recent
at this writing, 5.1.14, just to see what happens.

[Bug 1743094] Re: [regression] hibernation (freezes on resume) since 4.13.0-25.29

2019-04-30 Thread EDEMPCO
Since 18.04 is the latest LTS, how does this change get distributed to
those of us who rely on the LTS to be upgraded and effective until the
next LTS? In other words, how and when does it get integrated into
18.04LTS?

[Bug 1743094] Re: [regression] hibernation (freezes on resume) since 4.13.0-25.29

2019-02-25 Thread EDEMPCO
I've been dealing with this issue since December 2018. It acted to me
like a graphic problem, so I posted a bug #1807264 as a video crash. No
help or comment on the bug report. In the hopes that a new kernel will
help, I'm continually upgrading to the newest. No luck, so far. I would
be satisfied to be able to turn off hibernation/suspend completely, but
there is no help with that either. This needs to be addressed.

[Bug 1807264] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Video Crash on Suspend/Hibernate

2019-02-07 Thread EDEMPCO
I'm not getting any help, suggestions, hints, or anything with this
problem. I't seems that I'm alone and the only one with this problem.
So, if you are looking at this, there are no experts assisting, but I've
been experimenting ...

If the computer goes into hibernation and any input device (keyboard,
mouse, touch pad, etc) is manipulated, the video crashes. What this
means is explained above, but to reiterate, the main screen flashes and
noting can be done except to reboot. BUT, if the second screen is
inplugged from either the screen port or the HMDI connector AND THEN the
space bar is touched, the main screen recovers. After the main screen
recovers, the second screen can be plugged in and the system is working.

I believe that if I could turn off hibernation completely, I would be
free of the problem. All of the settings have been turned off and it
still goes into hibernation!

I've been continuously upgrading the kernel, but still no fix. The

[Bug 1807264] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Video Crash on Suspend/Hibernate

2018-12-10 Thread EDEMPCO
I've degraded the kernel from 4.19.8 back to 4.14.41. This was suggested
by several people and for them, it fixed the problem. With the degraded
kernel I am able to suspend, but not hibernate. If the computer is left
unattended and hibernates, the same response is seen as described above.

Still not able to find a way to turn off suspend and hibernation
permanently.

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

After updating to 18.04 when the system automatically
suspends/hibernates after non-use, the screen goes black, but will not
wake up by taping the space bar, nor does it display the hibernation
screen. Additionally, I'm using two screens the laptop and an external
monitor connected with the Mini Display port. When required to come out
of suspend, each screen behaves differently. The laptop screen flashes
while the external monitor may show any of these: 1) background screen
image with no tool bars or menu; 2) remains black; or 3) shows a gray
image. The only way to recover is to reboot, either by holding the power
button or Ctrl-F1 to log back into the system and use the reboot
command; only the external monitor will recover to a terminal screen.

Upgrading the kernel from 4.15 thru 4.19 does not change the
suspend/hibernation issue. It seems to be video related issue, since
HDMI port reacts differently than the Mini Display port, in that device
settings do not operate the same and changing the settings can cause the
same type of screen crash. Additionally, trying NVIDIA drivers will help
with the suspend/hibernation problem and allows the hibernation screen
to show, but is not a cure. Sometimes the NVIDIA drivers will allow it
to come back from hibernation and sometimes not. My suspicion is that
the drivers are not correct for the Intel video card.

I am also flummoxed by the fact that I cannot control
suspend/hibernation. There is no obvious way to keep the system from
suspending. Screen lock is OFF. Automatic suspend is OFF. Power button
suspend is OFF. There needs to be more control; the ability to eliminate
any and all suspend operations is a must! With this type of control, I
could have kept if from suspending until a fix is generated.

[Bug 1770429] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 No audio from speakers. Headphones working. Surface Pro 3

2018-12-05 Thread EDEMPCO
Following up on my post, where I did a fresh upgrade to 18.04 ...

Since then, I've done a few simalar, FRESH, upgrades without a problem with
sound. So, I went back to my own system and tried a few things; I was tired of
having to open a terminal and copy "pactl ..." I tried:
1. Purged Pulseaudio in Terminal with: sudo apt-get remove --purge pulseaudio
2. Rebooted and had sound, but no sound control in the system tray.
3. Reinstalled Pulseaudio with: sudo apt install pulseaudio
4. Immediately had no sound without using: pactl load-module module-detect
5. Repeated step 1 & 2; had sound

Knowing that Pulseaudio is only a control app for ALSA and wanting
control in the system tray, I installed QasMixer (an ALSA GUI) with:
sudo apt-get install qasmixer I think the problem is with Pulseaudio
and the inability to get it configured correctly on some machines. There
doesn't seem to be a way of troubleshooting or an easy fix.

Now I have both sound and a controller again.

[Bug 1770429] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 No audio from speakers. Headphones working. Surface Pro 3

2018-10-09 Thread EDEMPCO
I've done a fresh upgrade to 18.04 and had a "no sound" problem that I
haven't found a solution to. I found this and have been using it to get
the sound connected. Can't find the source again, unfortunately. Thought
it might help to point to the problem. Reinstalling Alsa and Pulse;
starting and stopping both; eliminating one or the other; did not work.
The following identifies something and places "Built-in Audio Analog
Stereo" into the sound output tab in Settings.

Open Terminal and type: pactl load-module module-detect

I had the same ttf-mscorefonts problem that I have had for the past
three upgrades from 14.04 to 16.04 and now to 18.04. Thanks Videonauth
for a great solution. Someone, or the author, might think about creating
a FIX-script using Videonauth's set-by-step. I'm sure that It will be
needed again in 20.04!

We've been told that it was fixed; how many times?

[Bug 1567827] Re: on ubuntu 16.04, phatch freezes at startup

2017-01-06 Thread EDEMPCO
I'm offering this as a helpful comment:

This problem with Phatch still not fixed in 16.04LTS as of 01/06/17.
That's a problem for the majority of Ubuntu users, many of whom do not
like code; do not like to use Terminal; and who want a stable, sound,
and functioning OS that has been promised by the designation "LTS". For
those of us who want an LTS like that AND run into problems like Phatch,
it would be nice to have a single URL page for 16.04LTS FIXES. That page
should provide us with the most correct and effective link to FIX
problems with the OS and any sanctioned application. In this case the
link should have gone to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=811184#12 and the credit given to Magnus Berg on
Mon, 22 Feb 2016 18:50:26 +0100 who was the first to supply the FIX for
Phatch.

[Bug 1645352] Re: No HDMI output after upgrade to 16.04!

2016-11-28 Thread EDEMPCO
Thanks Brian for the suggestion.

Sorry, the only "package" that I can guess that it could be xorg. I have
attempted to get help in the IRC chat at FreeNode, but instead I got
just questions. I asked for assistance to identify a package name three
times during a 30 minute session and got no help. So, I'm stuck.

If Ubuntu 16.04 includes the Intel driver and, I've insured that the
driver is correct and, loaded using the Intel Graphics Tool and, checked
the status above ... I don't know what else to do.

[Bug 1645352] [NEW] No HDMI output after upgrade to 16.04!

2016-11-28 Thread EDEMPCO
Public bug reported:

Running Ubuntu 16.04 64bit, 4.4.8 Kernel on an ASUS Trio with Intel® Haswell
graphics card and using i915 driver. After upgrade there is no HDMI output to
the external screen that I use daily.
I did the following:
- Upgraded to 4.4.8 Kernel hoping that the issue would be resolved.
- Checked for other reports of this issue and followed advise to use NVIDIA 364
drivers.
- Checked Intel for the most recent driver which is already packaged with
16.04; it is the i915 driver which is in use.
- Used Intel driver update tool to ensure that update is correct.
- Purchased a HDMI adapter to use mini-display port; works and reports HDMI1 is
in use, but HDMI2 is not recognized (when monitor is plugged in to HDMI2)
- Someone has assisted and has confirmed that there seems to be no hardware
issues.

** Affects: ubuntu
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1328630] Re: [Asus TX201LA] Kernel panic immediately during boot

2014-11-05 Thread EDEMPCO
I see that this thread has expired with the last post being 2014-08-13,
however, if anyone (like me) looked for a solution to kernel panic, I
offer the following solution that I posted on Ubuntu Forums. Please see

[Bug 913324] Re: unity-panel-service crashed with SIGSEGV in panel_indicator_entry_accessible_get_n_children() from atk_object_get_n_accessible_children()

2014-03-10 Thread EDEMPCO
I was wondering about activity on this bug. The bug has many duplicates
and a high heat number. The last activity seen here is for October of
last year. Ubuntu 12.04 is scheduled to be serviced for a few more
years. I have been suffering with this problem for a year. Is there any
progress to report?

[Bug 987498] Re: Unity/compiz freeze but mouse still move

2013-01-28 Thread EDEMPCO
I have been watching and waiting for a solution for a long time. I have
also tried to determine where the error is, without success. I have
determined that the lock up occurs when selecting icons from the Unity
menu in 3D. The menu slides out from the left, while the mouse hovers,
and as the mouse moves away with an icon selection, the Unity menue
stays out and the screen freezes. The mouse freely moves, but has no
mouse key selection capability. The only two choices are: 1) a hard
boot or 2) using the TTY screen (Ctrl, Alt, F1) to login and then use
the command Kill -9 -1 to soft start with Grub. No error messages or
logs to verify the freeze condition.

I have a Toshiba M400 convertible. Intel® Core™2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz × 2
processor and 32 bit OS. It reports an unknown graphics card, but the
card is an Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with 8MB-128M
dynamically allocated shared graphics memory.

My guess is that it's a Unity related problem. I'm still looking for
solutions ... it's happening a lot, sometimes 3 times a day.
