[Bug 1202955] [NEW] (fakeraid) root device not activated during boot

2013-07-19 Thread Ebbex
Public bug reported:

I've just installed a HP Microserver (N40L) with the latest installer
from precise-updates/main/installer-amd64/20101020ubuntu136.9/images
/quantal-netboot. The installer fails to activate the raid, so I had to
drop into a shell, write dmraid -ay, to continue the installation.

After the install, I have the exact same problem, I'm always dropped
into the busybox initramfs shell, write dmraid -ay to activate the
raid, and exit, and boot continues as normal.

I've solved my problem by adding the line [ -x /sbin/dmraid ]
/sbin/dmraid -ay to the end of the /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts
/local-top/dmraid as suggested in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dmraid/+bug/247027/comments/21

But I'm guessing there's a more sophisticated procedure that's not
kicking in on my system. What information can I start providing to help
get this fixed? (If there's a ubuntu developer interested, I can provide
access directly to the box via the ilo device.)

(initramfs) blkid
(initramfs) blkid -p /dev/sd[a-d]
/dev/sda: TYPE=promise_fasttrack_raid_member USAGE=raid
/dev/sdb: TYPE=promise_fasttrack_raid_member USAGE=raid
/dev/sdc: TYPE=promise_fasttrack_raid_member USAGE=raid
/dev/sdd: TYPE=promise_fasttrack_raid_member USAGE=raid

Without any parameters blkid doesn't return anything.

(initramfs) dmraid -ay

RAID set pdc_ebdeeaiceb-1 was activated
RAID set pdc_ebdeeaiceb was activated
RAID set pdc_ebdeeaiceb1 was activated
RAID set pdc_ebdeeaiceb2 was activated
RAID set pdc_ebdeeaiceb3 was activated

I'm filing it under linux-lts-quantal, since it's the highest level
package (I think) that is affected by the underlying problem. And I'm
told it's not related to

[Bug 1202955] Re: (fakeraid) root device not activated during boot

2013-07-19 Thread Ebbex
I think I've traced it down to a problem with the logic in dmraid-
activate

Raid_Name=$(dmraid -i -r -cr /dev/$Node_Name | grep -vi No RAID disks | grep
-vi formats discovered)
activate_array $Raid_Name

Here it tries to activate a subset of a raid10. (pdc_ebdeeaiceb-0,
pdc_ebdeeaiceb-1) when it probably should try to activate the superset
pdc_ebdeeaiceb

I solved my problem replacing the line with this
Raid_Name=$(dmraid -s -cr)

And now it boots!

[Bug 924513] Re: network with bonding does not start on ubuntu with separate /var partition

2012-02-03 Thread Ebbex
I just completed my second round of testing, all with a separate /var
partition;

Tested:
1. netboot install of precise.
Could not install, problems installing linux-generic package at end of
installation. (also tried linux-server, and linux-image-generic)
Installation is done via ttyS0, so did not have access to tty4 to check log
files.

2. netboot install of oneiric.
Installed, bonding configuration did not work.
Linux s6 3.0.0-15-generic #26-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 20 17:23:00 UTC 2012 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

3. upgraded to oneiric-proposed
bonding configuration still not working.
Linux s6 3.0.0-16-generic #28-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 27 17:44:39 UTC 2012 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

4. do-release-upgrade -d
upgraded from oneiric-proposed to precise.
bonding configuration IS working!
Linux s6 3.2.0-12-generic #21-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jan 31 18:48:57 UTC 2012 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

If there's an (easy) way to downgrade packages in incremental releases,
I'm willing to give that a go, see if I can track point of failure down.

Fun fact: On a fresh install of natty with working bonding
configuration, do-release-upgrade renders the system with a separate
/var partition, without working networking once it boots to oneiric.

[Bug 924513] [NEW] network with bonding does not start on ubuntu with separate /var partition

2012-01-31 Thread Ebbex
Public bug reported:

I believe there are benefits of having a separate /var partition,
unfortunately having bonding-configured network start up with the OS is
not one of them. Or atleast not in a timely fashion.

I've done this experiment on two identical hp bl460c g1 blades, only
difference was the partitioning scheme.

Here's the identical /etc/network/interfaces

# The loopback network interface

# The badass network interface

2010-02-11 Thread Ebbex
You'll have to excuse all the crap irrelevant text that came with the
apport-bug report, I didn't immediately spot a way to file a bug without
using ubuntu-bug. And it apparently wouldn't take the core file as a
parameter. The assertion in the summary gives a a great hint as to
what's wrong. Just download the image provided int the comments, and
you'll be able to reproduce it in an instant.

[Bug 196283] Re: netboot hardy installer marvell sata disks not detected.

2008-03-10 Thread Ebbex
** Description changed:

  1) Ubuntu 8.04 hardy

  2) netboot.tar.gz ?

  3) 2008.02.26

- 4) Detect all my disks, allow me to partition them, and install.

  5)
- 1 in every 20 boots, if i randomly tweak around with bios settings, it will
detect the disks.
- The other 19 times, they are not detected.
+ 1 in every 20 or so boots the installer will detect the disks. The other 19
times, they are not detected.

- So I've actually managed to install on the disks previously. Under
- linux-2.6.24 they work as normal, this problem seems to arise whenever
- using the ubuntu-installer. Though I previously had the same symptoms
- when running linux-2.6.2{2,3} (tweaking bios, etc).
+ This means I've actually managed to install hardy on the disks
+ previously (by randomly changing bios settings). On my installed system,
+ running the linux-2.6.24 kernel they work as normal. The problem seems
+ to arise whenever using the hardy-installer. Though I previously had the
+ same symptoms on an installed system running (custom) linux-2.6.2{2,3}
+ kernels.

Included for your viewing pleasure; dmesg, lsmod, lspci from the
installer, and from an installed system.

[Bug 131577] Re: [gutsy] No sound devices loaded for ICH7 Intel High Definition Audio Controller (which working fine in feisty)

2007-09-28 Thread Ebbex
taken directly from config-2.6.22-generic
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_INTEL is not set

Which explains why the module was not present in my custom kernel
either. Once I compiled it, I got sound.

[Bug 71172] openoffice-writer dependency in base-install

2006-11-09 Thread Ebbex
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-base

sarcasmSomeone decided that it would be funny to have a package in
base to depend on openoffice-writer./sarcasm

So after a netboot installation. I've got your basic commandline linux,
with no xserver, no windowmanager, yet somehow openoffice-writer found
it's way into my install.

[Bug 60442] Re: Dual / Two Batteries, shutdown on empty expansion battery. (GPM does not recognises second battery on hotplug)

2006-10-16 Thread Ebbex
Yep. This wasn't an issue in dapper with the older g-p-m. It's all
g-p-m's fault. g-p-m sees both my batteries, and calculates the total
time and total charge, but shuts down on one empty battery.

[Bug 60826] pcspkr isn't default in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

2006-09-16 Thread Ebbex
Public bug reported:

I'm sitting, listening to music, wearing earbuds. Suddenly a system beep
comes along. BEEP! It apparently does not care about my volume settings.
I should sue someone for temporary and possibly permanent hearing loss.

On a slightly more serious note though; Come on... It's an annoyance for
over 90% of the users out there. We don't care if we press backspace or
tab once more than required. Stop BEEPing us.
