Test with video.use_native_backlight=1, acpi_osi='!Windows 2012', acpi_backlight=vendor. None of those parameters makes backlight work. After bisecting, the regression happens on 3.10-rc1. Before 3.10-rc1, only intel_backlight is registered under /sys/class/backlight/ and acpi/video.c shows Current brightness invalid. So acpi_video won't register backlight device under /sys/class/backlight/ After 3.10-rc1, the acpi_video registers backlight device successfully. And the system will use acpi_video for backlight control. Also, it is not win8 backlight issue. @kaxing, Win8 doesn't use ACPI to control backlight but leaves control to gfx driver instead. If system tells BIOS that it has win8 capability, BIOS will disable ACPI backlight interface. Linux kernel starts to support Win8 capability after 3.7. That's why ACPI backlight control works on early kernel version. Blacklisted alx and inserting the module after the booting, the system is still failed to connect to wired network. 3. echo 1 /sys/class/net/eth0/device/reset , the system can connect to wired network. I disabled the wakeup sources in /proc/acpi/wakeup for further experiment under 3.2.0-61 I found that this bug is disappeared by disabling XPDV wakeup source with 10 times shutdown test. (The disabling command is echo XPDV /proc/acpi/wakeup) The information from lspci and acpi wakeup table indicates that XPDV and NIC is the same device. If Ethernet cable is plugged, this issue can be reproduced on 3.2.0-61. Following 3 conditions can avoid this issue. 1. Removed NIC driver (atl1c) 2. Disable NIC from BIOS 3. I test the kernel image - linux-image-3.13.0-28-generic_3.13.0-28.51_amd64.deb. I can't find hp-wireless.ko after installation. So I install linux-image-3.13.0-28-generic_3.13.0-28.51~precise1_amd64.deb. The wireless key works fine on this image. And, as Alex mentioned in bug 1118689 #6, BIOS no longer uses WMI to control the wireless if win8 capability is enabled. Verified with this setting A06 / 12.04.2 + 3.11.0-15, this issue can be reproduced if reboot command has been run. With boot parameter acpi_osi=!Windows 2012, the wireless key works. A06 / 12.04.4 + v3.12.{14, 16, 18}
A06 / 12.04.4 + v3.13.{8, 9, 10, 11}
PS: This issue can be reproduced on those kernel versions without
acpi_osi boot parameter.
