[Bug 1784580] Re: evolution cannot type messages

2018-07-31 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
The freeze / inability to type seems to occur only after selecting a bit
of text with the mouse, then typing to replace that text. After a while
if I persist trying to type, the window goes blank as shown in the
attached screenshot.

[Bug 1784580] Re: evolution cannot type messages

2018-07-31 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
I have figured out the culprit:
The "Screen reader" accessibility setting was turned on for some reason, and if
I turn it off, this problem goes away. Steps to reproduce this problem:

1. Turn on screen reader
2. Right click an old email in evolution, choose Edit as new message
3. Paint some text with the mouse, start typing to replace it.
4. Continue trying to type even when the window seemingly freezes.
5. The compose window should go blank and show a view similar to the attached
screenshot.

[Bug 1743739] [NEW] Evolution: editing HTML-formatted email slowly leaks memory, freezes computer

2018-01-17 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
Public bug reported:

This shows up in top as "webkitwebproces". If email editing window is closed,
memory consumption returns to normal. If I save the email as a draft, then
re-open it, memory usage is OK.
Evolution also freezes for about two-three seconds every now and then when
trying to type, paste, or erase text in the email. This is on Ubuntu 17.10.

[Bug 1355994] [NEW] nm-applet periodically crashes in MATE desktop

2014-08-12 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
Public bug reported:

I have nm-applet connected to a WIFI network every day. It disappears from the
panel every now and then, perhaps 1-4 times a day.
I am not sure if this happens on all desktops of 14.04, or just MATE. It also
happens on my Linux Mint computer running MATE and network-manager, so I am
inclined to believe it happens with network-manager-applet.

[Bug 668382] Re: No warning before removing important packages!!

2011-02-15 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
The issue I described in the other bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/680385
was slightly different:
The problem was caused because software center did apt-get autoremove. The
packages removed before the autoremove operation were not critical.

[Bug 287448] Re: gnome-settings-daemon fails with libgstlibvisual.so error

2010-11-25 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
Removal of /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstlibvisual.so worked for me as a
workaround. Interestingly this does not happen on my likewise 64-bit
Ubuntu 10.10 laptop, likewise with Pidgin 2.7.5, only the desktop. Also,
it did not happen for Pidgin 2.7.3 on either machine.

[Bug 680385] [NEW] software-center can autoremove essential packages

2010-11-22 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

I installed the binary deb for 7Kingdoms AA from here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/skfans/files/7KAA%202.14.1/
It is set to depend on libsdl1.2-debian-all. However, ubuntu-desktop depends on
libsdl1.2-debian-pulseaudio, which conflicts with the former.
If I install 7kaa using gdebi-gtk, it will correctly uninstall ubuntu-desktop
and libsdl1.2-debian-pulseaudio.
However, if I install it using software center, it will do the same and then
start to autoremove everything that depended on ubuntu-desktop, leaving me
without GDM, some graphics drivers, etc ...
I suggest that software-center would at least WARN people before destroying
their system like this. A better way would be not to autoremove certain
packages through software center, for example those required to run the current
session of the user, or those that ubuntu-desktop depends on.

I should also say that the 7kaa package being messed up is not Ubuntu's
fault, using libsdl1.2-debian-all as a dependency is not the right way,
I think libsdl1.2-debian should be better. Regardless, an easy tool
like the software center should be more foolproof.

[Bug 565630] Re: empathy accounts right-hand information box has a light background but white text when using a dark theme

2010-09-30 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
Sorry, It seems that it's not fixed.
I forgot to mention that the one that is unreadable is when you look at an
Available account. The red and orange backgrounds are OK. So, to reproduce
this:
0. Use a dark theme (Darklooks, darkroom, murrine wise dark, ... ) with white
foreground text
1. Open empathy accounts
2. Create an IRC account for example on irc.freenode.net
3. Login with it so that it becomes available
4. Notice the light yellow background and that the text on the right hand side
is unreadable.

[Bug 621941] [NEW] Add-ons manager buttons have white text on white background when your gnome window title text is set to white

2010-08-21 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

In Firefox 4.0 beta 1,
the new Add-ons Manager shows the buttons show more, Preferences,
Disable, and Remove using white on white background. The foreground should
be set to black if the preferences is supposed to have a light/white
background. The optimal solution would be not to force-feed white, and take the
background colour from the gnome theme as well as the foreground colour.

This should probably go upstream...

[Bug 560551] Re: volume and mute keys are repeated on Lucid on EEE PC 901

2010-05-02 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
menthurae, your diffed files are not sorted. I ran sort -g on the
differences you posted, and that reveals that both files have the same
lines, just in different order.

Maybe you can do

sudo lsinput
and then
sudo /lib/udev/keymap -i input/eventX
where eventX is a keyboard listed by lsinput.
Then press the keys that don't work and see if there is any output.

[Bug 566155] [NEW] Computer locks instead of hibernating when battery is critically low

2010-04-18 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: devicekit-power

On Lucid, on an EEE PC 901, I waited for the battery to go critical. I first
observed warnings saying that battery is low, with options Ok and Cancel.
What do these buttons do? Why is this not done through notify-osd? The warnings
also popped under my terminal window, so I almost missed them.
After the warnings, I got the message saying that battery is critical and that
the computer will hibernate unless plugged in, with similar Ok and Cancel
options. The computer then blanked the screen, and presented me with the unlock
screen with the password field. I expected the computer to hibernate, not to
just lock the screen.
Note that I use uswsusp for hibernating, and the usual pressing the power
button and choosing hibernate from the menu works; only this hibernate when
battery is critical does not. pm-hibernate also works.

[Bug 565630] [NEW] empathy accounts right-hand information box has a light background but white text when using a dark theme

2010-04-17 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

In empathy in the accounts dialog, the area that shows the status of an
account, such as connecting, available, disconnected etc. has a
changing background colour. This is red when disconnected, light yellow
when available, etc. However, the foreground colour has not been
specified. This means that with dark themes that have a light foreground
colour, text in this area is unreadable.

To reproduce:
1. Start Empathy and go to Accounts

for example DarkRoom or Darklooks.

[Bug 560551] Re: volume and mute keys are repeated on Lucid on EEE PC 901

2010-04-14 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
I wonder why dpkg reported those files belonging to the acpi-support package on
the eee.
I did a diff between the report of dpkg -L acpi-support on my desktop and the
eee, and removed the files that did not belong (around 7 files), including
if-asus-eee.sh, hibernatebtn.sh and thinkpad-volume-up. This seems to have
fixed my double-suspend bug also.

[Bug 560551] Re: volume and mute keys are repeated on Lucid on EEE PC 901

2010-04-12 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
This may be related: after a suspend caused by closing the lid, the
computer suspends again when resumed. After resuming again, it will not
suspend a third time. I tried working around this with the same method,
by commenting out the command in sleepbtn.sh or making sleep.sh do
nothing, but it didn't remove the problem.

[Bug 560551] [NEW] volume and mute keys are repeated on Lucid on EEE PC 901

2010-04-11 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi-support

On my EEE PC 901 with Lucid, in Gnome, I have XF86AudioMute assigned to Volume
Mute, XF86AudioLowerVolume assigned to Volume down, and XF86AudioRaiseVolume
assigned to Volume up.
When I press those buttons, the correct thing happens. However, if I press any
button on the keyboard (letters, space), the same action happens again. For
example, Fn-F7 (XF86AudioMute) and space causes mute and then unmute. Fn-F8
(XF86AudioLowerVolume) and then a or any letter causes audio to be lowered
two steps.
I have worked this around by uncommenting the acpi fakekey command in the
respective files in /etc/acpi (mutebtn.sh, voldownbtn.sh, volupbtn.sh), like
this:

$ cat /etc/acpi/mutebtn.sh
#!/bin/sh

test -f /usr/share/acpi-support/key-constants || exit 0

. /usr/share/acpi-support/key-constants
#acpi_fakekey $KEY_MUTE

Any idea why I need to do this? On my desktop machine, these actions are
triggered only once.

[Bug 80755] Re: extracting doesn't work right when the location entry is displayed

2010-01-31 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
The fix in the gnome-bugs bug for this
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=402349#c12
seems to work well for me.

[Bug 80755] Re: extracting doesn't work right when the location entry is displayed

2010-01-30 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
I am not sure everbody understands the workaround, since there are so many
people saying nothing happens when they click the extract button on the
selection dialog.
If you click the pen to hide the Location text box, extracting will work for
that system until you show it again.
The workaround, as a picture:

[Bug 12970] Re: Will not extract to selected directory

2009-11-24 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
This bug has been present throughout Hardy, Intrepid, Jaunty, and now Karmic.
To reproduce:
1. open an archive with Archive Manager (file-roller).
2. Click the extract button.
3. In the file selection dialog, let the initially selected folder stay
selected; just click extract. Nothing happens.
4. Now, select another folder, and click extract. It works.

2009-11-24 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
Also in my case,
if the Location text entry is hidden, then the bug does not occur, as
upstream says.
Good to finally have a workaround.

[Bug 80755] Re: extracting doesn't work right when the location entry is displayed

2009-11-24 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
I have had this issue throughout Hardy, Intrepid, Jaunty, and now Karmic.
To reproduce:
1. Open an archive with Archive Manager (file-roller).
2. Click the extract button.
3. In the file selection dialog, let the initially selected folder stay
selected; just click extract. Nothing happens.
4a. Now, select another folder, and click extract. Files are extracted to the
folder.
4b. Alternatively, I can go one folder up, then select the folder that was
initially selected myself. Then extracting works.

What should happen:
3. In the file selection dialog, let the initially selected folder stay
selected; just click extract. Files are extracted to the folder.

[Bug 155263] Re: Fullscreen applications become windowed

2009-06-12 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
For me it took some minutes of using the application. Disabling
gnome-screensaver is the workaround.
I recommend people whose applications switch to windowed immediately test if
disabling gnome-screensaver helps; this would make compiz inhibiting
gnome-screensaver when fullscreen applications are launched the solution to
both bugs.

Fix Committed means it is fixed in the current development version, not
released yet as a package. When that happens, it will be Fix Released.
We would need to download the development version from somewhere.

[Bug 367175] Re: thunderbird not using indicator applet

2009-05-04 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
The volume control and brightness control and such do not use it. They
only use the new black notifications, not the indicator applet.
Brightness change, volume control change and such do not appear to the
menu that opens when you click on the envelope (indicator applet) in the
notification area. If You only want the new black notifications for
thunderbird, look here: https://launchpad.net/libnotify-
mozilla/+download and download the extension. It can be installed in
thunderbird in the usual way, i.e. click Tools - add ons, click Install,
and browse to the .xpi file contained in the downloaded tar.gz.

To my knowledge, thunderbird does not yet queue events in the indicator
applet. And I agree that it should.

[Bug 369426] [NEW] gnome-mplayer cannot open files over smb

2009-04-29 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-mplayer

gnome-mplayer cannot open files on my passworded smb server any more.
Regular mplayer works fine, since it opens the files from .gvfs, unaware that
there is any smb involved.
gnome-mplayer from Intrepid, version 0.7.0 works fine too.
with gnome-mplayer --reallyverbose ~/.gvfs/share-name/video-file.avi I get:

This happens when both compiz and gnome-screensaver are enabled.
If either is disabled, f.ex. running metacity with gnome-screensaver, or

[Bug 363088] Re: Smart Pinyin input method is missing

2009-04-18 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: scim

in Jaunty, the Smart Pinyin Chinese input method of SCIM is missing.
With the same scim-pinyin package installed, the easiest input method
for typing simplified Chinese is missing. In Intrepid, the input method
is shown when scim-pinyin is installed.

  How to reproduce:
Go to System - Administration - Language settings and install Chinese input
support. Also tick the box for using IMEs for input.
- Restart the session, and start gedit. right-click on empty space and choose
input method - scim. See that the list of input methods has 4 entries for
traditional Chinese, none of them with the word pinyin (in English or Chinese)
in the name.
+ Restart the session, and start gedit. right-click on empty space and choose
input method - scim. See that the list of input methods has 4 entries for
simplified Chinese, none of them with the word pinyin (in English or Chinese)
in the name.

Then install Chinese support on Intrepid. restart session, start gedit.
right-click on empty space and choose input method - scim. Notice the
input method for simplified Chinese whose name is written completely in
Chinese. Notice that it is not present in Jaunty.

  Workaround: I downloaded scim-pinyin from
  http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=108454 . I
compiled it, adding #include cstring to a few files that did not
compile on gcc-4.3.3 otherwise. After that I ran checkinstall, and
restarted my session. The scim smart pinyin input method is now visible
and works as on Intrepid. However, scim-bridge has stopped working; I
only get this input method by choosing scim as the input method from
  the right-click context menu.

My problem was that the whole module is not shown in SCIM Setup - IM

modules, none of them written in Chinese characters, and none enabling
intuitive pinyin-based input. After I compiled and installed scim-pinyin
from source, the method appeared.

[Bug 229535] Re: package linux-backports-modules-2 .6.24-16-generic None failed to install/upgrade: le sous-processus post-removal script a retourné une err eur de sortie d'état 1

2009-04-13 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
I think this happens if you delete kernels, then try to remove the
modules after deleting /lib/modules/kernelname and so. I think this can
be fixed by touching the files that it does not find above. I think this
affects all module packages. (ubuntu-modules ,restricted-modules,
backports-modules). While removing modules, the package could be lenient
and allow clean exit even if the folders do not exist.

2009-04-13 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
I think it tries to generate an initrd believing that the kernel still
exists, and since you change the modules, it might be necessary to
generate the initrd so old modules will not be included in it. Of
course, if the kernel does not exist, that is pointless.

[Bug 38131] Re: Firefox causes massive Xorg CPU usage

2007-08-22 Thread Eemil Lagerspetz
Interestingly enough, AccelMethod exa causes this on my laptop.
The laptop is a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz with 1G memory and an ATI Radeon Mobility 9000

However, AccelMethod XAA and having RenderAccel true fixes it.
exa was faster on Edgy.

I hope this helps someone.
I will attach my fairly tweaked xorg.conf.
