[Bug 1215826] Re: Lost ability to remap Caps Lock to Ctrl
Bug confirmed on a default install of Saucy Salamander. Removing indicator keyboard fixed it. [Bug 1053637] [NEW] Apport UI should inform what crashed before user hits Show Details
Public bug reported: $ lsb_release -a LSB Version: core-2.0-amd64:core-2.0-noarch:core-3.0-amd64:core-3.0-noarch:core-3.1-amd64:core-3.1-noarch:core-3.2-amd64:core-3.2-noarch:core-4.0-amd64:core-4.0-noarch Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description:Ubuntu quantal (development branch) Release:12.10 Codename: quantal $ apt-cache policy apport-gtk apport-gtk: Installed: 2.5.2-0ubuntu4 Candidate: 2.5.2-0ubuntu4 Version table: *** 2.5.2-0ubuntu4 0 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status Considering that the number of times apport-gtk window pops-up when testing Ubuntu Development Releases can be a little overwhelming, it would be nice to be immediately informed of what crashed when we first look at it. That way, testers would quickly be able to decide if it's worth reporting the specific problem or not. The way it is now, we must click the Show Details button and wait for the details to load to know what has crashed. If we have already reported the program shown in the Details at ExecutablePath, it's generally useless to report it again, so hitting Show Details and waiting for details to be loaded was wasted time. Ideally, the string stored at ExecutablePath should be displayed in apport-gtk main window right below the Sorry, Ubuntu has experienced something... line. Maybe in smaller fonts to accommodate the full path. I believe this is a small UI change that would make testing a little less annoying and more productive. (I have originally posted a full description of this problem/request, with screenshots, at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2060038). [Bug 1018718] Re: columns width redrawn by multiple events
I have posted a video on YouTube showing this bug before finding this bug reports (thanks Dino99!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxB5TsqbojM I'm experiencing this on Nautilus 3.5.90 in Quantal up-to-date (Aug. 24th, 2012). I think I can provide some additional info. 1) I do not see the bug when I use a New instance of Nautilus to browse a new, empty directory: sudo killall -s KILL nautilus cd $HOME mkdir nautilus-test cd nautilus-test xdg-open . 2) I do not see the bug if I create files in this new directory sudo killall -s KILL nautilus cd $HOME/nautilus-test //Create some example files touch test1 ls /usr/bin | tee -a ls-output.txt cp /usr/bin/ld ld.bin xdg-open . 3) Resizing the columns does not work: They return to the previous width. As far as I can see, they behave like this: - Size, Type, Modified, Group, Location, Mime Type, Owner, Permissions are set to have as small width as possible. - Name takes the entire remaining width. - This widths are refreshed every time you click Nautilus window. 4) As a consequence, one can maximize/minimize the symptoms of this bug by changing the order of (and/or adding/removing) columns (at Gear Icon, Preferences, List-Columns). If Name is the last to the right, for example, the effect is minimized. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1018718 Title: columns width redrawn by multiple events To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1018718/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1028754] [NEW] No GUI on gnome-control-center to config a Touchpad on a Desktop
Public bug reported: When gnome-control-center / Mouse and Touchpad is used on a Desktop, the Touchpad tab is not displayed (only the Mouse one shows). This made complete sense until recently (Desktops normally don't have a Touchpad). However, with new wireless/wired touchpads (like Apple Magic Trackpad, Logitech Wireless Touchpad, new keyboards with embedded touchpads, etc), actively supported by Kernel, this is not the case anymore. If a touchpad is detected, even on a Desktop, wired or wireless, the Touchpad tab on g-c-c / Mouse and Touchpad should be displayed. Moreover, the touchpad settings should be expanded and improved. These devices come with WIndows drivers and software that allows for 2/3/4-fingers gestures, speed/sensitivity, corners-actions, inertia settings. On Ubuntu (and Arch and other distros), people came up with udev and keymap based workarounds. But it would make sense to have it in a GUI for the ordinary users. gnome-control-center / Mouse and Touchpad seems to be the correct place. I have already discussed this in Ubuntuforums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=12128572#post12128572) and Brainstorm (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/29977/). In both cases I was advised to post this is a bug. [Bug 995339] Re: Move notifications to main display
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected compiz-0.9 possible-manual-nvidia- install quantal reproducible running-unity single-occurrence ubuntu ** Description changed: I'm using 3 monitors with my NVidia card (TwinView). The way I see it, people that use more than one monitor usually have a *main* one, placed more directly in their field of view, and secondary displays might be placed elsewhere, near or far, including other areas out of the user's field of view. In my case, all notifications pop-up in my third monitor (or whatever monitor I added last). It it's counterproductive. Notifications should pop-up in the main monitor. If that is not something that can be coded as a default, an option to choose where notifications will pop-up could be added to g-c-c Displays setting. [Bug 995309] [NEW] Launchpad: Data field for users to inform their UbuntuForums, AskUbuntu handles
Public bug reported: It's hard for a team manager to keep track of its members now that we have many Ubuntu-related online platforms: Launchpad, UbuntuForums, AskUbuntu, irc.ubuntu.com. It's frequent to see users that have different logins / user names for each of these platforms. Launchpad already has a text field in which users can fill in their IRC nicknames. It would make things a lot easier if we also had fields for them to input their UbuntuForums, AskUbuntu handles. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/995309 Title: Launchpad: Data field for users to inform their UbuntuForums, AskUbuntu handles To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/995309/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 995339] [NEW] Move notifications to main display
Public bug reported: I'm using 3 monitors with my NVidia card (TwinView). [Bug 994580] [NEW] Keyboard config missing text field for testing settings
Public bug reported: gnome-control-center Keyboard config could use a text field to allow users to test their settings (Key Repeat rate, delay, speed and cursor blinking speed). Right now users need to switch to another open app, such as gedit, to test set these settings. It's a very small change, but it is present in most Operating Systems. It would help make the interface slightly more friendly. [Bug 994585] [NEW] Keyboard/Mouse erratically broken when switching between vmware-player VM and Unity Desktop
Public bug reported: Sometimes when switching from a vmware-player VM to Unity desktop, the keyboard key repeat and Ctrl+c/Ctrl+v stops working. At the same time, the mouse gets incredibly slow, to a point it becomes unusable. Looking at g-c-c keyboard/mouse, settings/sliders are at usual places. Just touching these settings/sliders slightly is enough to reload usable settings. I can see this behavior in many install of VMware-player 4 series, during PP and now OO cycle. I'm currently using VMware Player 4.0.2 build-591240 on fresh installs of PP. [Bug 982762] Re: Nvidia 295.40 - Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 Fresh Install (slow performance in Unity 3D)
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 982485 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/982485 ** Description changed: Ubuntu Release: 12.04 (PP Beta 2 with full updates for Apr 15, 2012) $ lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu precise (development branch) Release: 12.04 Package and Version: nvidia-current 295.40-0ubuntu1 NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-295.40.run (binary installer from NVidia FTP) I have seen this behavior in 3 machines today. In at least one of them, the performance got back to normal after: - Uninstalling nvidia-*; - - Making sure nouveau wouldn't auto-load after removing nvidia-current (/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.con - added Blacklist nouveau); + - Making sure nouveau wouldn't auto-load after removing nvidia-current (/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf - added Blacklist nouveau); - Downloading / installing NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-295.40.run from NVdia FTP (download.nvidia.com); - Unchecking Sync to VBlank in CCSM/OpenGL Plugin; - Unchecking Sync to VBlank in nvidia-settings (at XServer XVideo Settings and OpenGL Settings); I have verified that the softlinks at /usr/lib/*GL* and /usr/lib32/*GL* are correct, unlike previous problems we had with NVidia weird performance specially in OO (rare reports in PP). /var/log/Xorg.0.log displays no warning/error or unusual info regarding NVidia/NVRM and neither does dmesg. Some users are reporting crashes of compiz (in which Unity launcher / global panel) disappears). This is not the case for me. Modinfo confirms I am using the correct kernel module version (295.40) and lsmod shows no trace of other vga driver, other nvidia module besides the correct one or nouveau. [Bug 982485] Re: nvidia 295.40 breaks unity 3d
There seems to be 2 different situations in current reports and latest posts at forums: 1) Very slow GL performance. Unity 3D session varies from barely usable (more powerful VGA cards) to unusable session (low-end card - session simply stalls). No crash of Compiz / Unity Plugin. The Unity 2D session is normal. Unity --reset, or creating a new user with default settings and logging in, doesn't fix the problem. 2) Compiz simply crashes when Unity (3D) session is loaded, right after a succesful login in lightdm. The segfault is visible via logs. Since it crashes, there won't be a launcher, global panel, indicator on the desktop (no Compiz == no Unity Plugin loaded). The 2D session works fine. As a test, have you people tried installing some previous version of NVidia driver? I have tried 295.33 only, and reached the very same results. I will test 295.20 still today as soon as I can. You can get previous NVidia drivers versions at http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us or via ftp download.nvidia.com. In order to test / install a previous driver version: 1) Download the driver to a known directory (~/Downloads, for example) 2) Press Ctrl+Alt+F6 to switch to another Virtual Terminal and login with your User/Password 3) Run sudo service lightdm stop (or NVidia installer will not run, because there's an active X session) 4) Run cd ~/Downloads sudo chmod +x ~/Downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-295.33.run (if that's the version you have downloaded, to make the installer executable) 5) Run sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-295.33.run and press OK to all installer questions (default options) 6) As the installer finishes, run sudo reboot now to reboot the machine. 7) At lightdm, login to Unity 3D and verify if there was any change or improvement. Also: - Make sure you are not running nouveau. You can check if nouveau is loaded by running lsmod | grep -i nouveau. It should display no results. - Make sure your currently loaded NVidia kernel module is the same version as the installed drivers. You can check that nvidia Kernel module is is loaded with lsmod | grep -i nv. If you installed NVidia drivers from the proprietary/binary installer from NVidia website/FTP it should output nvidia. If you have NVidia installed from Ubuntu repos (pakage nvidia-current) it should output nvidiafb. To check the Kernel module version, use modinfo nvidia or modinfo nvidiafb. It should output version: version number along with other module details. This version should match the drivers you installed. I'm not sure this is NVidia related. If everyone could try previous (known to work) versions of NVidia drivers, it could be very helpful for properly triaging this bug. I recommend testing 295.20 and previous ones. [Bug 982485] Re: nvidia 295.40 breaks unity 3d
I am running 3 machines (desktops) with NVidias: : GT9500 and GT9600 (dead slow, unusable, but no compiz crashes) and one with GTS450 (slow, but usable, because the VGA Card is much more powerful, no compiz crashes). I have just tested NVidia 295.20 and have the same problem. All desktops are powerful ones: AMD Phenom II X6, 6-cores, @3.4GHz, 16GB Ram. I have never seen they running slow, no matter the load. I have also noticed one new thing: All cads are running hotter than normal (I noticed the fan noises). They can't move from performance mode to adaptive mode. It's like if they all PCs were running something very heavy. But they are not. [Bug 982485] Re: nvidia 295.40 breaks unity 3d
@Daniel I have tried many configurations, from a single monitor (19) to 3 monitors (including large LCDs - 22, 40, 42, and different resolutions), and haven't noticed any difference any improvement or change, for good or bad, in performance. Performance used to be blazing fast, with and without external monitors, until the updates of Apr 15th. I've been testing this same hardware from OO Alpha to now, wen't through many NVidia drivers, and never had such a performance impact as I'm seeing now. However, I completely agree: After the updates of the mentioned date, which triggered the problem here, reverting to previous NVidia drivers versions has not improved or fixed the problem for me. If other users are in fact fixing it by reverting to previous NVidia releases, I'm seeing some other problem. [Bug 982485] Re: nvidia 295.40 breaks unity 3d
Hi Mick, Unchecking Sync to VBLank always did make things a little faster for me using NVidia drivers, although it generally creates some tearing, specially when watching high-res movies. I wonder if it will fix everyone's problems in this situation. It would be interesting if everyone here could test it too. But I'm more interested in how you came to replacing lightdm for gdm/kdm. I mean, if you undo this change, is the problem back? [Bug 928442] [NEW] Compiz Place Windows plugin: Settings not loaded when Compiz is reloaded
Public bug reported: Program's windows are placed at the correct viewports as they are launched in a running Ubuntu (UNity) session. However, if compiz --replace (or unity --replace ) is ran in a terminal, all opened programs' windows are moved to viewport 1,1 (x,y), in disregard of the rules set at the Place WIndowsplugin interface at CCSM. [Bug 871582] Re: M4A89GTD_PRO_USB3/Realtek ALC892, Green Headphone Out, Front] Playback problem
It took me a while to get my hands on this specific hardware again. Current installs of PP seem to work perfectly out of the box with Realtek ALC892, incuding the Front Output jack sense and auto muting. I had to make sure the BIOS was set to SPDIF and not ac97 for the Front Panel at every boot (not sure why this setting is not saved sometimes). [Bug 885738] Re: Dash - Remove Dash Home shortcut icons
@John Lea (johnlea) Thanks for the reply John. I entirely understand the limitations and dynamics you mentioned. I like and use Unity both professionally and personally and am happy with it's current state. My personal view is that this is a mistake: Being present in forums, including Ubuntu one, and online communities, as well as seeing real life implementations of Ubuntu at work and clients, the constant complain I hear from users about it is it's lack of configurability - not the lack of yet a new lens (real users don't get default lens / won't install new lenses - this is for the hackers). Ex: Today I tried to help a visually challenged adult user at the forums who couldn't find a way to increase the mouse cursor to something he could see. It broke me inside. He blames Unity, as in the efforts put on Ubuntu Software Center, lightdm, better blur for the dash, lenses, etc didn't take under consideration what visually impaired need. That's a real user need, hard to disagree. But, considering what you mention, in terms of the absence of enough resources and this politics over the LTS (which was unknown to me), there's no way out. You gotta do what you gotta do. I can comprehend that. Thanks for your attention to the issue. [Bug 885738] Re: Dash - Remove Dash Home shortcut icons
IMHO, having custom (user created, not default) shortcuts placed on the desktop is a legacy from ancient desktops and it always is complicated to use them if you have maximized apps (they are below the maximized app). There is a limit to how many shortcuts one can have in the launcher bar in a usable form. A portion of users also need shortcuts with text, something the launcher bar can't fulfill (name displays only on hover). Allowing the Shortcuts area to have real Shortcuts produces a gain in productivity (no need to minimize apps and find your shortcuts), an extension to the launcher bar and, at the very least, some degree of user customization, which is now something that has to be addressed. Code-wise the change is very small (less than 20 lines of code added). I can easily put this into lens. What is beginning to worry me is that, is all normal things, like having custom shortcuts, is gonna require lens, we're gonna need a larger lens bar soon. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/885738 Title: Dash - Remove Dash Home shortcut icons To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/885738/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I am running on very little free time for Ubuntu, so unfortunately I'm unsigning from this discussion and bug report. I don't believe anyone will do anything in time for the LTS. At least not in a collaborative manner (something may simply show despite what is chosen as best option in this discussion). And whatever option they choose, I trust it to be the worst possible. [Bug 885738] Re: Dash - Remove Dash Home shortcut icons
HI Mikkel, I have been using my custom Dash Home area for some time now (I changed it to support 15 icons, as a test) and I find it very practical to have the possibility of customizing its contents. The underlying concept of a shortcut should be that it relates to the specific needs of the current user in a way that speeds up PC use or make it's use more comfortable. Pre-set shortcuts fail to address both issues. Not having shortcuts configurable anywhere in the dash also won't address this issue. (And we certainly know one of the most frequent complains of Unity users is the lack of customization possibilities right now). The launcher is limited, in the sense that it supports some shortcuts, but it gets cluttered easily as more shortcuts are added. Considering the dash button is the first place a new user will click when starting on Ubuntu, and that everyday users will click it many times, I find the shortcuts area are placed in the best possible place, but only as long as it allows for real shortcuts (that fulfill the characteristics described above). That area is properly placed and is an asset, which real value we should not disregard or eliminate. Many Ubuntu users have no idea of the existence of placed like Ubuntu.com, UbuntuForums.com, Askubuntu.com, local online communities and forums, or of the included manual that ships with the product. I feel like we can create a boost in the online Ubuntu community by placing some or any of these options right there in the shortcuts, while keeping the area customizable. Editing each user's $HOME/.dash can easily be done, not only by hand, but by a Customize Dash Shortcuts option in the Settings panel. Technically, it doesn't take much more than a couple hours to create an app to read and write to this file there. I feel like the Settings and Customize Dash Shortcuts icons maybe should also be in the shortcuts by default. Considering the current accusations we face, that Unity is not customizable enough, it would represent a small effort but show good will on the part of developers towards new users to: a) Have the shortcuts area customizable. b) Include an icon, in the shortcuts area, to launch the customization app. c) Include an icon, in the shortcuts area, to launch the settings panel. d) Include an icon, in the shortcuts area, to open the offline manual. e) Include an icon, in the shortcuts area, to open ubuntu.com or ubuntuforums.com. Also, now talking about how companies use Ubuntu: When I look at professional implementations of Ubuntu, in talks with CIOs, I know they don't want to have Play Music, View Photos, Have Fun, etc as the first thing their employees will see on Ubuntu. They want to have shortcuts to professional applications, such as ERP, CRM, Intranet Portal, etc. If we eliminate this shortcuts area, we will depend exclusively on companies creating launcher shortcuts for these. Why not use the existing shortcuts area to provide for such need? I do value John's Option #1. I think it would be wonderful if would have a symbol of a Clock in the lenses bar that displays such information (recent dloads, recent apps, recent docs, recent *). But I still find the option to have real, user customized shortcuts, as the first thing one sees one pressing the dash button, as a step towards making Unity more productive and friendly.
[Bug 885738] Re: Dash - Remove Dash Home shortcut icons
I would consider the possibility of reading $HOME/.dash (or other per-user configuration file) in the format: [Name of Program] Path-to-icon Path-to-program Pretty much like it was hardcoded. The we use Quickly or something to add a Dash Home setup option in the settings. I know some situations in which people may want to add stuff there. Ex. CIOs want to put shortcuts to their ERP/CRM apps there, etc. If the above file was not found then load defaults. I suggest, going a little further, adding Ubuntu.com or UbuntuForums.com to the default launchers. BTW, I have changed Unity to look for a file named ~/.dash_home at $HOME of the logged in $USER (could be any file of course, I was just testing). [Bug 871582] Re: M4A89GTD_PRO_USB3/Realtek ALC892, Green Headphone Out, Front] Playback problem
David, I have tested the dkms in one more machine based on the same motherboard using first a fresh install of Natty, and then updated it to Oneiric. In both cases, there really is no change to /proc/asound/SB/codec#0 when headphone is plugged / unplugged to front jack. Just to make sure it is working, I installed Windows 7 later and verified that in fact Jack sense works on that OS. I verified a new information (don't know if it makes any difference in this case). In the BIOS of this motherboard, the user can choose between HD and AC'97 for the front panel connectors. I verified that I have sound in headphone and mic working in both cases and that sense does not work for headphone in any. What method (HD or AC'97) is preferable for Alsa /hda? Or is your code independent of that choice? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/871582 Title: M4A89GTD_PRO_USB3/Realtek ALC892, Green Headphone Out, Front] Playback problem To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/871582/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 871582] Re: M4A89GTD_PRO_USB3/Realtek ALC892, Green Headphone Out, Front] Playback problem
Hi David, I have just tried with a fresh install of Oneiric and see no difference. Maybe the dkms package available there is still outdated? (alsa-hda-dkms_0.201110141211~oneiric1_all.deb). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/871582 Title: M4A89GTD_PRO_USB3/Realtek ALC892, Green Headphone Out, Front] Playback problem To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/871582/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 871582] Re: M4A89GTD_PRO_USB3/Realtek ALC892, Green Headphone Out, Front] Playback problem
We're out of luck, sorry. I have reinstalled once again Oneiric in another machine with the same ASUS Motherboard and ALC892 (just to make sure) and the patched dkms didn't fix the jack sense problem. I see absolutely no change, looking to alsamixer, plugging/unplugging the headphone to front green port. The changes I can see now is that, on Alsamixer, the headphone slider does control the headphone volume, being able to completely mute it if set to zero. Also a good change is that the Front slider is controlling only the external speaker, being able to completely mute it if set to zero. Headphone volume is not affected by the front slider anymore. Another info: On pavucontrol output screen I have two output options: Analog and Headphones. If I select Headphone, I see on alsamixer that channels Surround, Center, LFE, Side and Line are Muted and the Master Slider is reduced about 20%. The exact oposite happens as I switch from headphones to analog. Regarding this new bug you mention, I can't really say. Let me give it a try when you have the patched dkms.

[Bug 811440] Re: CE: hpet increased min_delta_ns to 20113 nsec after ~30 minutes from the boot
Well, I think I can say that both RC8 and 3.1.0-999.201110040905_amd64 are very likely free from this problem. I could not install RC9 (had a weird dependency problem). I tested two machines for exactly 45 minutes and had no mention whatsoever to the min_delta message reported here. Normally in a matter of 10 minutes I had lots of instances of the message. The PCs were under heavy use: playing mp3 over network, running VirtualBox host with Win7-64 Guests, OpenGL tests, accelerated desktop (Nvidia), 1080p video playing, libreoffice, browsing, using network (smb) for large file transfers, plus more stuff. I'll keep them in stress test for a day and report again, but at this point I'm pretty sure if we still had the problem dmesg would be full of the min_delta increase msgs. [Bug 871582] Re: M4A89GTD_PRO_USB3/Realtek ALC892, Green Headphone Out, Front] Playback problem
I don't know if it is of any interest to you, but I found a weird behavior. On pavucontrol output devices I have two options: Analog Output and Headphones. Both keep sound in speakers and headphone all the tiome. The thing is that if I select the headphone option, sound in speakers get incredibly louder (doesn't change in headphone). The when I switch the back to the analog output, speaker volume gets normal. Headphone volume stays the same all the time. Does it make any sense to you?
