[Bug 801471] Re: Ubuntu 11.04 installer crash, right at the end
Hi Simon, I hope you can see that this report was from 2011 and that I commented in 2014 saying it was likely too stale to bother. [Bug 1315167] [NEW] Cross-workspace app switching from launcher is broken after resume from sleep
Public bug reported: When I resume my computer from sleep there is only one problem I've found. Otherwise sleep and resuming from it work fine. To reproduce: 1. Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit, all up to date. Enable multiple workspaces (for example I use 2x2). Start some applications on more than one workspace. 2. put computer to sleep (suspend). Not hibernate, just regular suspend, using power menu at upper right corner. 3. resume. 4. Using the launcher, click an app that is running but is not on the current workspace. Expected: the display switches to the workspace containing the chosen app. Actual: the display does not switch just by clicking an app that is currently running on a workspace other than the current one. Everything else works, you can switch workspaces by keyboard or by using the workspace switcher if present on the launcher. And after you have switched workspace manually like this, the normal expected behavior resumes. In summary, *if it is the first thing you try to do after resume from suspend* the clicking of an app in the launcher when that app is running on a workspace other than the one currently visible will not result in switching the visible workspace. Thank you for any action on this. It is not a big problem so I don't need a workaround. But one hopes it will be fixed in time. [Bug 927742] Re: banshee moves to next song then stops playback
I can confirm this is still the case in my configuration -- Ubuntu Trusty Tahr (14.04), 64 bit desktop version, and banshee 2.6.2. It is somewhat ironic that enabling the gapless playback option actually CAUSES a gap in playback. I do not experience playback fully stopping, and in my case it is also not intermittent. Instead, each song begins playing, and then after just the first fraction of a second of music, I hear about a half second of silence, then the playback continues. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/927742 Title: banshee moves to next song then stops playback To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/banshee/+bug/927742/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 751575] Re: banshee no longer plays music gstreamer resource error NotFound
It's still not a bug, just a difference between what newer Linux users may expect and normal Ubuntu behavior. When I posted in 2011 I was still new to using Linux on a system with multiple hard drives, though I had used it for longer on a single-drive system. Ubuntu, and Linux distros in general, are never going to auto- mount hard drives by default. The fact that Windows does so is an interesting difference (which wastes a lot of electricity) but it should not influence the Linux world. The apparent banshee bug filed here has a simple explanation: the drive(s) containing the music in your banshee library must be mounted before you try to play your music. When people (including myself) noticed that re-scanning the library appeared to fix the problem, that was only true because they actually had to mount the drives before they scanned the library. And they perhaps did not notice that the drives became mounted as a necessary side-effect of going to look at them manually in their file manager. Regardless of my innocence in 2011, I think it's clear that it's not banshee's problem if you want to play music located on a drive that is currently not mounted. Mounting and unmounting drives is an subject whose primary issues are power conservation and connection or disconnection from resources, allowing the facts of whether those resources are local or remote to be nicely abstracted over. That subject has nothing at all to do with a music player, which is only one of endless programs which may need to access content on a drive. If banshee were to add the behavior of mounting drives when we go to play music from them, it would not be responsible to leave them mounted once banshee was closed, but it also would be wrong to unmount them on closing banshee because other applications may be using them. So there again these are two issues at right angles to each other. @michaelchirico4: Even easier (for some at least) than one line in the terminal -- just open nautilus or whichever file manager you use and you'll see your drives listed in its left column. A single click on each one that you want to mount should get it going. The only waste of time or space with this is that you then have a file manager window open that you may not have needed. But the drive(s) will stay mounted if you close that window, or you can just minimize it based on the assumption that you might end up needing a file manager view during your session. Even simpler than that is that Ubuntu can show your drives in the launcher so you can mount them from there. Unfortunately as of 14.04 there is no right-click option to mount a drive, so you just click it and this still opens a file manager window, but it does accomplish the mounting so that's one click less. Ideally the launcher view of drives would by default show (visually) their mount status and have a right- click option to mount. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/751575 Title: banshee no longer plays music gstreamer resource error NotFound To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/banshee/+bug/751575/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 751575] Re: banshee no longer plays music gstreamer resource error NotFound
Hi Michael, I agree with Chow Loong Jin that deleting your banshee database and re-importing your library will most likely fix everything in your latest description. I'm sorry to hear of your frustration with Linux. That was my opinion circa 2008-9, but in recent years I have been much more pleased. I think I may have adjusted my use patterns. I agree that an open-source operating system just does not come with anyone who is paid to care about the problems we experience. But on the other hand, closed systems sort of don't have support either unless you are willing to go through a process that is at least as difficult, often worse. In the long run I am quite pleased with 14.04 and it's leaps and bounds ahead of where my first Ubuntu box was with 10.04. [Bug 1247221] Re: Nautilus doesn't remember setting for showing hidden files correctly when org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser show-hidden is true
@Sebastien: I tried a guest session just now. 1. This was my first time using a guest session since installing 14.04. 2. On this first opening of the guest session, the nautilus preference was found to be unchecked, so it did not show hidden files. 3. Leaving the preference unchanged, I used Ctrl+H to show hidden files, and observed that some files were displayed. 4. I closed nautilus and then opened it again. Hidden files were not shown. I repeated this sequence again to be certain. 5. I changed the preference to Show Hidden Files (checked), and observed that hidden files were displayed. 6. I closed nautilus and opened it again. Hidden files were shown; the preference was respected as before. 7. Leaving the preference unchanged, I used Ctrl+H to hide hidden files, and observed that hidden files were no longer shown. 8. I closed nautilus then opened it again. The setting was not remembered, and only the preference was respected. Conclusion: in a guest session, it appears that only the preference determines the behavior when nautilus is opened. Once it is already open, the temporary setting can be changed via Ctrl+H (or View Show Hidden Files), but it will be forgotten when nautilus is closed. This is the same behavior as in my regular user session. The only difference is that for my regular user, the preference defaulted to Show Hidden the first time I used nautilus after installing 14.04, while in a guest session the default was NOT to Show Hidden. [Bug 1247221] Re: Nautilus doesn't remember setting for showing hidden files correctly when org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser show-hidden is true
My similar bug report on 14.04 got linked to this one. But mine is not identical. The difference: on this report the original poster writes, When changed via gui the setting is remembered correctly. In my case that is not true. No matter whether I use Ctrl+H or View Show Hidden Files, the setting is never remembered after I close nautilus. If I'm remembering correctly, this used to be remembered. In 14.04 the *preference* for it is remembered (in Edit Preferences) but the current value of the setting is not remembered. Something that should be added to the symptoms in this bug report: it's not just that the setting is not remembered; it's also that the preference (In Edit Preferences Views ) is apparently set to Show Hidden and Backup Files by default when you install or upgrade. That probably was not the intended behavior. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1247221 Title: Nautilus doesn't remember setting for showing hidden files correctly when org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser show-hidden is true To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/1247221/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1310390] [NEW] nautilus showing hidden files by default, does not retain view setting
Public bug reported: Summary: Since 14.04, the nautilus file manager is always showing hidden items when I open it. The setting can be changed, but reverts when I close the app so the next time I use it it again defaults to showing hidden items. Expected behavior: nautilus defaults to not showing hidden files and folders. User can press Ctrl-H or use View Show Hidden Files to toggle the setting. And the new setting persists when nautilus is closed and later re-launched (or in future sessions). Current behavior: nautilus defaults to SHOWING hidden files and folders. [Bug 879328] Re: Equalizer option is disabled / grayed out
Hi Loong Jin, Well, this may be good news -- Ctrl+E still activates the equalizer! I had not thought to try it before since the option was grayed out on the View menu. I suppose that is probably easier to deal with (though also lower priority) than if the equalizer was becoming totally inaccessible. [Bug 86689] Re: firefox does not recognize some font styles
Yes, the same problem is still in effect as of Firefox 20.0 on all of my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS systems including a clean install. The problem and a successful workaround are described well here: http://keramida.wordpress.com/2009/11/07/dejavu-condensed-as-default/ From reading other bug reports and issue trackers, it appears that application teams (Mozilla and others) and GTK+ developers have pointed at each other, so the problem is stuck in the probably won't fix zone and has been for several years now. This is bad for a lot of users who find DejaVu Sans Condensed to be by far the clearest, most readable and comfortable font on their machine, especially for web browsing. I am sorry that I currently have to trick Firefox into recognizing this font by forcing a font substitution. At least it works, which is more than I can say for Chrome... thus far I have not discovered any way to make DejaVu Sans Condensed available in Chrome's font picker. That issue alone is completely constraining my choice of browsers. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/86689 Title: firefox does not recognize some font styles To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/86689/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 571568] Re: Dejavu condensed fonts not working in openoffice 3.2
This is not actually an OpenOffice bug per se, but an interaction between Ubuntu's fontconfig and several different programs, including (but not limited to?) Open/Libre, Firefox, and probably several others. What these seem to have in common is the use of GTK+ font chooser dialogs. There is an entrenched situation where devs from Ubuntu, GTK+, and Firefox (to name a few) have all decided that it's each other's issue and not their own. I am very grateful to the author of the following post, which is the only acceptible/elegant-enough workaround that I've found: http://keramida.wordpress.com/2009/11/07/dejavu-condensed-as-default/ Currently there is really no default or easily installable font that makes Firefox read as smoothly on Ubuntu as Windows defaults. The regular versions of DejaVu Sans or Bitstream Vera Sans are just unnecessarily wide. And it is a shame that this is so because DejaVu Sans Condensed *is* 'available' -- just not actually _reachable_ within Firefox or several other important programs without hacking. [Bug 801471] [NEW] Ubuntu 11.04 installer crash, right at the end
Public bug reported: I am filing this report not from inside the installer, but still before a reboot. So according to the instructions below, I will attach /var/log/installer/syslog and /var/log/installer/partman. I was unable to file from inside the installer because the wireless connection widget did not appear at that time so I couldn't access the 'net. Oops... OK, well maybe the above isn't true? Because there is /var/log, but there is no /var/log/installer. Also, I have /var/log/syslog but NOT /var/log/partman. The latter just is not there. So I'm submitting just /var/log/syslog. So the incident I'm reporting is: right at the end of the installer, just before it finished, a window popped up to say the installer crashed and recommending that I should make this report. Oh, one other thing too... the installer crashed in my previous attempt too, which was an attempt to do a side-by-side install with an existing Windows Vista. That was my first and only attempt before, and it crashed early in the process, like right after partition adjustment. So I abandoned that, rebooted from my USB stick with the live CD image on it, and this time (my second attempt in total) told it to erase everything and just install Ubuntu 11.04. The process went well, including downloading updates for a long time, but then right at the end it reported this crash. [Bug 751575] Re: banshee no longer plays music gstreamer resource error NotFound
One more observation. Today I forgot to mount my media drive before starting Banshee and trying to play from a playlist. When I clicked the play button, in the past it has just not worked, though sometimes Banshee made at least some sort of visual indication that I had clicked the button, but nothing more. Today something more happened, which is probably a bug. Today I was doing this on the second monitor of my two- display desktop, and when the play button failed to work, a terminal window that I had on that second monitor moved itself from the second monitor to the first. That is strange... Well anyway, the workaround is just to manually mount the media drive before trying to play anything from Banshee. But I'll repeat that Banshee should probably mount the drive if it's not mounted, or at least give a meaningful error message instead of silently failing (with side effects). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/751575 Title: banshee no longer plays music gstreamer resource error NotFound To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/banshee/+bug/751575/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 751575] Re: banshee no longer plays music gstreamer resource error NotFound
OK, one day later the problem is back. There are only two real changes I made to my Ubuntu 11.04 system since yesterday when I deleted banshee's media db and re-imported media which caused it to work properly again. Since yesterday I set up the Empathy Internet Messaging widget that is I guess part of Unity, and I installed mysql, mysql-client and mysql- workbench. I don't think any of those things are likely to have caused a sound problem. Also I have logged out and shut down the system since then, then came back today and booted up. See additional idea about mounted volumes below. Sound is working on my system in other ways. Chat notifications make a beep. Totem Movie Player 2.32.0 works properly (its about window shows using GStreamer 0.10.32. But I still get the same GStreamer resource error: NotFound errors if I run banshee from terminal and then try to play songs from my media library or a playlist. I think I found a clue to this. When I right click on any of my tracks and choose Open Containing Folder an error dialog pops up saying The folder could not be found. Please check that the track's location is accessible by the system. All of my tracks were imported from an NTFS-formatted internal hard drive that I had on this computer when it was a single-boot Windows 7 system. It is now a dual-boot with Ubuntu, and Ubuntu has become my primary OS. So I went and imported all of my old iTunes folder from one of the old Windows drives into Banshee. That part is no problem, it imports nearly six thousand tracks and plays them correctly. But it looks like maybe sometimes when I start the system and open Banshee it can't find my files because the source drive is not mounted or something. What do I have to do to keep that from going wrong? [Bug 751575] Re: banshee no longer plays music gstreamer resource error NotFound
I should have realized it while I was typing my previous message. All I have to do is manually mount the source drive before I try to play the files in Banshee. So it's not exactly a bug, but it is a usability issue. Some new users (especially newcomers to Ubuntu) will not understand why their files import and play correctly but stop working after a reboot. Of course experienced users will immediately know it is because the media needs to be mounted. Maybe Banshee should detect this condition and either mount the media automatically, or at least give an error message that tells what the user needs to do.

Banshee at some point (this is within 24 hours of a completely fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04 with the default installation of banshee) just stops playing music. I have only imported a single time, which brought in approximately six thousand tracks, all of which were from an iTunes folder so 100% of them are likely to be playable with no codec problems. Who knows what caused it, but the evidence of the error was as follows, when banshee was started from terminal and I then attempted to play files: [Error 09:07:18.856] GStreamer resource error: NotFound [Error 09:07:19.124] GStreamer resource error: NotFound [Error 09:07:19.395] GStreamer resource error: NotFound (one of these lines per attempt to click the Play button). Unfortunately I cannot answer Kamus' questions asked to Pete above, because I have already deleted ~/config/banshee-1/banshee.db and then re-imported my media, and it fixed the problem. Please do not close this issue; it's real and not someone's imagination. But I realize you have to do that if someone does not answer. If you ask me follow-up questions I will attempt to answer them to the best of my ability. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/751575 Title: banshee no longer plays music gstreamer resource error NotFound -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 751575] Re: banshee no longer plays music gstreamer resource error NotFound
By the way, if it happens again I will try the test Kamus suggested to Pete in the messages above -- I will try playing other media in other ways, such as opening a video with Totem, etc. and make sure system sound and other media players are working. But I will have to wait until (if) the problem happens again.
