[Bug 492959] Re: Evince cannot save filled PDF forms

2012-12-16 Thread Eric Williams
Testing the document linked in Comment #17 (fw4.pdf) works for me. I am
able to change data, then save the form to the desktop. When I re-open
the saved form, my data is there and I can continue working on it.

$ pdfinfo fw4.pdf

You will still receive an error message The file could not be saved as

It appears that the ability to save form data in unsigned, unecrypted
documents is working in Precise. It is still not possible to save signed
documents with changed form data.

[Bug 1090297] [NEW] MAAS View Documentation link points to unrelated version of docs

2012-12-14 Thread Eric Williams
Public bug reported:

Hi,

in the MAAS Dashboard, there's a link View Documentation. This
points to the upstream page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam/MAAS/.

This offers a manual redirect to http://maas.ubuntu.com. This
appears to be documentation from the current daily build, and will
contain information that's probably not relevant to the installed
version.

Also, the documentation for any particular version, such as the one
in Precise, appears to only be available by checking out the sources
and building the documentation manually.

It would be better if the docs for a particular version were installed
with MAAS, and the documentation link would point to that version,
stored locally.

Alternatively, http://maas.ubuntu.com/ could host docs for all supported
versions.

Thanks,
Eric

[Bug 1089034] Re: bamfdaemon doesn't handle Xaw-based apps correctly

2012-12-11 Thread Eric Williams
I played aorund with this a bit, and at least in the case of xeyes it's
caused by a missing .desktop file:

I can get predictable, normal behavior by doing the following:

eric@host:~/Desktop$ cat EOF xeyes.desktop
 [Desktop Entry]
 Type=Application
 Name=Xeyes
 Comment=Eyeball Tycoon
 Exec=/usr/bin/xeyes
 Icon=object-inverse.svg
 Terminal=false
 Categories=Utility;
 EOF
eric@host:~/Desktop$ xeyes

It uses the specified icon, it can be locked to the launcher, and it can
be re-launched from launcher normally. I also tried this with xclock and
got the same result.

Thanks,
Eric

2012-12-11 Thread Eric Williams
Hey, Mark

the .desktop filename apparently needs to be the same as the binary.
Your desktop file worked for me after the following:

root@host:/usr/share/applications# mv ibm-3270-emulator.desktop
x3270.desktop

Note that I'm testing with the x3270 package from universe.

2012-04-03 Thread Eric Williams

Press left Super and up or down Arrow simultaneously then quickly
release.

[Bug 878820] Re: Window Management, Keyboard shortcut - The grid keybindings are behaving inconsistently

2012-04-03 Thread Eric Williams
I'll just +1 that this behavior is inconsistent and confusing.

Ctrl+Alt+KP* works for everything but left and right, which are the most
useful IMHO on widescreen monitors.

Super+L/R would be fine, but Super+Arrow Key presses appear to be
misdetected (LP#972330), bringing up the keyboard overlay after a few
seconds.

[Bug 774059] Re: Scale by Window group not working

2012-02-24 Thread Eric Williams
@ #8 This workaround works beautifully for the initial operation.
However, the traditional Scale operation is undone by repeating the
binding. This workaround falls short of that. Would there be any way to
implement this unScale operation via the same or different binding?

[Bug 820327] Re: Fn+F7 cycling gives external monitor incorrect resolution on Thinkpad x220

2012-02-01 Thread Eric Williams
Hi, Bryce

I can confirm that the monitor does work correctly in external-only mode
under oneiric.

However, cycling through the modes with Fn+F7 never results in the
desktop being stretched across monitors ??

But that's another bug.

[Bug 894071] Re: Mouse pointer doesn't move with two fingers pressed on bcm5974 touchpad

2011-12-02 Thread Eric Williams
Trying to be clearer:

Two-finger scrolling works fine, because it's not a button press, just a
matter of lightly laying two fingers on the trackpad and moving them up
and down.

We're talking about a two-finger *click* here. When the trackpad is
clicked with two fingers, the pointer stops moving as long as the button
is down.

[Bug 894044] [NEW] Three-finger window drag conflicts with three-finger middle-click on Macbook Air touchpad

2011-11-23 Thread Eric Williams
Public bug reported:

## Issue

- pressing three fingers on the trackpad of an 11 macbook air 3,1
results in love-handles being displayed instead of middle-click being
registered

- cannot middle-click on macbook air 3,1 trackpad

## Environment

- oneiric 11.10 x86_64

- 11 macbook air 3,1 (October 2010)

## Resolution

- [workaround] put fingers down in sequence (1-2-3) instead of all at
once before pressing touchpad

- allow configuration option to disable 3-finger window drag

  or

- provide configuration option for middle-clicking some other way

## Root Cause

- 3-finger window drag cannot be disabled

- only 1 physical button available on trackpad requires multi-finger
emulation

[Bug 894071] [NEW] Mouse pointer doesn't move with two fingers pressed on bcm5974 touchpad

2011-11-23 Thread Eric Williams
Public bug reported:

## Issue

- mouse pointer doesn't move with two fingers pressed (although right-
click is registered)

- cannot right-click 'n' drag with two-finger mouse button 2 emulation

- can't access context menus with right-click drag because mouse pointer
doesn't move

## Environment

- bcm5974-based touchpad

- Unity, Window Maker, and Xfce are all affected

## Further information

Attached is the syslog after enabling debugging in the bcm5974 driver,
and two-finger pressing and moving the two fingers around on the
trackpad. Notice that the driver registered movement (Y: and X: values
change with n:2, or two fingers down), but the pointer was not moving on
the screen.

Steps used:

sudo echo -n 9 /sys/module/bcm5974/parameters/debug
sudo logger begin two-finger test
[move fingers around with two-fingers pressed]
sudo logger end two-finger test

[Bug 820327] Re: Fn+F7 cycling gives external monitor incorrect resolution on Thinkpad x220

2011-09-22 Thread Eric Williams
Hi,

More information about this issue:

- still happening on an up-to-date Natty

- Problem *does not occur* if gnome-display-properties is running at the
time

- The exact symptoms have changed a little, but still shows the same
inability to properly set the external monitor

- With gnome-display-properties running, cycling through modes with
Fn+F7 looks like this (in order):

ModeInternalExternal

Spanning DesktopOn On
Clone Mode On Broken
Internal Only On Off
External Only Off On
Spanning (again)On Broken

If gnome-display-properties is running, it works properly:

ModeInternalExternal

Spanning DesktopOn On
Clone Mode On On
Internal Only On Off
External Only Off On
Spanning (again)On on

This is on a projector, which doesn't support many modes, so broken is
basically black.

When run on a fairly flexible external monitor, I noticed that the
resolution/refresh as reported by xrandr does not match the actual
resolution of the monitor. In the attached photo, you'll see output of
xrandr (white on black) saying the monitor is 1920x1200@60Hz, but the
monitor's status menu says it's running 1600x1200@60Hz.

The GNOME desktop believes that the monitor is 1920 pixels wide, so even
though there's a picture on the monitor, much of it is missing.

Thanks,
Eric

[Bug 820327] [NEW] Fn+F7 cycling gives external monitor incorrect resolution on Thinkpad x220

2011-08-03 Thread Eric Williams
Public bug reported:

## Issue

Pressing Fn+F7 to cycle through monitor configuration produces unusable
monitor configuration on external-monitor-only mode.

External monitor is set to incorrect resolution when it's the only
active display.

xrandr output does not match resolution of external display that is
actually set. E.g., xrandr shows 1920x1080@60Hz, but monitor status
menu shows 1360 x 768 @ 60Hz, which it does not support.

## Environment

- Thinkpad X220 (T61 also fails)

- External monitor attached

## Steps to reproduce:

- connect external monitor to ThinkPad X220 (or X61)

- press Fn+F7 to cycle through modes

- on External Monitor Only mode, compare resolution of external monitor
as reported by xrandr and the monitor itself.

[Bug 809076] [NEW] Need better error message when encountering a bad network name

2011-07-11 Thread Eric Williams
Public bug reported:

I've tried to add a Windows 7 shared printer using the Browse
functionality. This browser correctly is able to determine all of the
computers in the work group and correctly lists all of the shared
printers on the remote Windows 7 host. However, the share name of the
network printer contained spaces. This led to a frustrating error
message Unable to connect to CIFS host..., which gave no indication of
the real problem: the fact that the URI had be changed form XXX XXX
's XXX to XXX20XXX20XXX's20XXX, inserting 20 for
spaces. As soon as I renamed remote printer's share name to something
without spaces, the add process worked flawlessly. Had I not checked the
URI after the browse functionality the third time trying to add this
printer, I'd never have figured this out. Either warn on browsing that
the shared printer's name is incompatible, add functionality to make it
compatible, or warn afterwards with a better message.

Ah, OK. That works fine.

Would it maybe make sense to change the application name in the panel
when the mouse moves into that region?

Otherwise, this issue is resolved as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for
the tip.

[Bug 802149] [NEW] Difficult to bring maximized background applications into focus without performing action

2011-06-26 Thread Eric Williams
Public bug reported:

- Windowed applications that are not in the foreground can be activated
by clicking on their title bar.

- Maximized applications have no titlebar

- Clicking anywhere on the application window of a background
application sends a mouse click event to the application

- The amount of surface available to bring the application into focus
without performing a (possibly unexpected) action is very small. See
screenshot of evolution

Click-through should be disabled on non-focussed applications that are
maximized. I.e, the activating click should not be passed to the
application.

[Bug 801469] [NEW] Software Center's new recommendations do not change

2011-06-24 Thread Eric Williams
Public bug reported:

## Issue

- Software center's New recommendations not changing, despite having
been looked at

- Old recommendations marked as New and are not providing value

## Environment

- Natty 11.04

- Software Center

---

I have been getting the same 3 recommendations for weeks now. I even
tried one of them out via Software Center and subsequently uninstalled
it because it wasn't very interesting for me.

I would expect Software Center to keep track of recommended items that
had been installed and then remove it from the recommendation list.

Ideally, I can remove items from the list with a little x next to it
or similar, and it would add something else to the list that might be
interesting instead.

[Bug 792702] [NEW] 64 Bit Natty Won't EFI Boot

2011-06-04 Thread Eric Williams
Public bug reported:

I've performed a fresh install of Natty 64bit from a Live USB, both by
running the direct Install Ubuntu and via the LiveUSB options. I've
done both a manual partition and an automatic partition. Every time
(I've tried 4 times, at least), the install goes fine and restarts. Upon
restarting, I get the message No bootable device -- insert boot disk
and press any key.

I went from Ubuntu 11.04 to a Windows 7 install, and now I am trying to
go back to Natty. I've looked around but I can't find anything that
seems like my situation or has worked.

[Bug 788085] [NEW] wackamole init script start fails with Cannot write PID file on 10.04 Server

2011-05-25 Thread Eric Williams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wackamole

## Issue

* wackamole does not start at system boot

* wackamole init script startup fails with Cannot write PID file

## Environment

* working wackamole / spread configuration

* Lucid 10.04.2

* /var/run/ mounted as tmpfs

## Root Cause

/var/run/wackamole is created at dpkg install time. /var/run is tmpfs,
however, and the directory disappears on reboot.

## Resolution

Adding the following lines to /etc/init.d/wackamole before daemon start
resolves this issue:

  test -d /var/run/$NAME || mkdir /var/run/$NAME

See patch.

## Diagnostic Steps

1. install wackamole and spread

2. setup configuration so that it works as expected

3. reboot

4. Check for the following in /var/log/daemon.log:

May 25 12:33:13 wacka1 wackamole[871]: Cannot write PID file

## Issue

* wackamole Aborts with Assertion `ret == My.num_allocated' failed. when IP
address requires failover

* Wackamole dumps core when peer is added or removed from group, if not
currently assigned to virtual ip address

* wackamole daemon exits if not currently assigned to virtual ip address
and another peer enters or exits the group

## Environment

* Lucid 10.04.2

* wackamole 2.1.1-3.1

* hostname defined as 127.0.1.1 in /etc/hosts (default)

## Resolution

* (workaround) remove the 127.0.1.1 from /etc/hosts from all machines in
the group, and it seems to work

## Diagnostic Steps

* install and configure wackamole

* create virtual ip group with multiple hosts

* start wackamole with:

  wackamole -c /etc/wackamole.conf -d

* shutdown wackamole on machine that currently has IP address assigned

[Bug 770046] [NEW] Swapping left alt + left win key prevents applications from using Alt key

2011-04-24 Thread Eric Williams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Reproduction Steps:

open gnome-keyboard-properties

Layouts Options - Alt/Win key behaviour

[o] Left Alt is swapped with Left Win

Afterwards, in all applications the alt key is no longer accessible.

I.e.,

- in GEdit, it doesn't switch between documents 1-9

- in GNOME Terminal or xterm it doesn't pass alt-key combinations to
shell

This only happens under Unity. Under other WMs, e.g. Window Maker,
gnome-settings-daemon successfully sets the layout, and the alt key
still works.

[Bug 751344] Re: Cluster resource agents fail to run because of missing /var/run/resource-agents directory

2011-04-05 Thread Eric Williams
Hi, Andres

actually, I came across this after I used the apache template for the
web resource group, /usr/share/pacemaker/templates .

I'll see if IPAddr2 has the same issue.

[Bug 751344] Re: Cluster resource agents fail to run because of missing /var/run/resource-agents directory

2011-04-05 Thread Eric Williams
When configured as an IPaddr2 resource, the directory is created
automatically when the resource is started. I haven't yet figured out
exactly where this occurs, however.

[Bug 534629] Re: AssumeDefaultDomain does not work

2011-02-16 Thread Eric Williams
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: likewise-open

Setting AssumeDefaultDomain=dword:0001 does not work with
  likewise-open 5.4.0.39949-3 on Ubuntu 10.04 (development branch) 64 bit.

+ IMPACT STATEMENT
+
+
+ Many Likewise Open prefer to set AssumeDefaultDomain, as it make the
+ users/groups name more consistent with local one. It is particularly
+ true in deployment where there is a single domain, where prepending the
+ domain name would be somewhat redundant anyway.
+
+ Moreover, this is a regression. People upgrading to a version of
+ likewise-open where the AssumeDefaultDomain work as expected will find
+ their user/group names have changed, and that they now need to prepend
+ them with the domain name and separator.
+
+
+ TEST CASE
+ =
+
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Install likewise-open, join domain.
  2. Check likewise behavior: getent passwd domain\\testuser returns
information, getent passwd testuser does not.
- 2. Change AssumeDefaultDomain to dword:0001 in
/etc/likewise-open/lsassd.reg
- 3. Run lwregshell import /etc/likewise-open/lsassd.reg
- 4. Run lw-refresh-configuration
- 5. Check behavior again: getent passwd testuser does not return information
while it now should...
+ 3. Change AssumeDefaultDomain to dword:0001 in

+ 4. Run lwregshell import /etc/likewise-open/lsassd.reg
+ 5. Run lw-refresh-configuration
+ 6. Check behavior again: getent passwd testuser should return information

[Bug 574443] Re: likewise-open5 upgrade mangles RequireMembershipOf settings

2011-02-15 Thread Eric Williams
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: likewise-open

  1/ lsb_release -rd:
  Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
  Release:10.04

  2/ apt-cache policy likewise-open
  likewise-open:
- Installed: 5.4.0.42111-2ubuntu1
- Candidate: 5.4.0.42111-2ubuntu1
- Version table:

+   Version table:
+  *** 5.4.0.42111-2ubuntu1 0
+ 500 http://be.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
+ 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

  3/ After a do-release-upgrade from 9.10 server to 10.04, I expected my
ActiveDirectory logins to still work as expected...

4/ ...unfortunately, the upgrade mangled some settings and the
ActiveDirectory logins were not possible anymore

I found out that the require-membership-of setting of /etc/likewise-
open5/lsassd.conf was not correctly transferred to the new
  RequireMembershipOf registry key.

  More precisely, the setting:

- require-membership-of = DOMAIN\group1,DOMAIN\group2
+ require-membership-of = DOMAIN\group1,DOMAIN\group2

  became:

- RequireMembershipOf DOMAINgroup1,DOMAINgroup2
+ RequireMembershipOf DOMAINgroup1,DOMAINgroup2

  instead of:

- RequireMembershipOf DOMAIN\\group1 DOMAIN\\group2
+ RequireMembershipOf DOMAIN\\group1 DOMAIN\\group2

Thus, the following procedure (partially) resolved the issue:

- sudo lwregshell
- cd
HKEY_THIS_MACHINE\Services\lsass\Parameters\Providers\ActiveDirectory
- set_value RequireMembershipOf DOMAIN\\group1 DOMAIN\\group2
- ctrl-D
+ sudo lwregshell
+ cd
HKEY_THIS_MACHINE\Services\lsass\Parameters\Providers\ActiveDirectory
+  set_value RequireMembershipOf DOMAIN\\group1 DOMAIN\\group2
+  ctrl-D

- sudo lw-refresh-configuration
+ sudo lw-refresh-configuration

(I say partially because now I'm forced to use keyboard-interactive
authentication when connecting with PuTTY. But I suppose it's another
  bug I have to track... :-| )
+
+
+ IMPACT STATEMENT
+
+
+ Users cannot rely on lwregshell to correctly import values from the .reg
+ files, leading to unpredictable and possibly undesirable results.
+
+
+ TEST CASE
+ =
+
+ 1. set RequireMembershipOf to desired groups in /etc/likewise-open/lsassd.reg
+ 2. import into registry
+ 3. inspect registry values
+
+ grep Membership /etc/likewise-open/lsassd.reg
+ RequireMembershipOf=sza:EXAMPLE\\test^users
+ # lwregshell import /etc/likewise-open/lsassd.reg
+ # lw-refresh-configuration
+ # lwregshell
+ #
+
+ RequireMembershipOfREG_MULTI_SZ[0]
+ EXAMPLEtest^users
+

[Bug 605326] Re: Likewise open 5 or 6 conflicts with winbind

2011-02-14 Thread Eric Williams
Nominating this for an SRU; added Impact and Test Case to bug
description.

Thanks,
Eric

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: likewise-open

I had this problem since version 5 (stable version 5.3 manually
installed, 5.4 from lucid repositories, 5.4 from ppa) and now also with
  the recent version 6.

I can reproduce the problem easily: Likewise open works without problem
until i install wine : wine install also winbind as dependency.

When i reboot, then i cannot login with local users, but only with AD users.
So i suppose likewise and winbind conflicts somehow.

If i try then to purge winbind from the system, the situation does not
  change.

If there is some more log i can add, just let me know.
  Regards
+
+ IMPACT STATEMENT
+
+ Installation of windbind disruptions system configuration for likewise-open,
causing it to stop functioning. De-installation and purging windbind does not
the situation.
+
+ TEST CASE
+ =
+
+ 1. Install and configure likewise-open
+ 2. test likewise-open successfully
+ 3. install winbind
+ 4. re-test likewise-open = Fails.

[Bug 572271] Re: CacheEntryExpire setting ignored default value of 4 hours is too low

2011-02-14 Thread Eric Williams
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: likewise-open

  likewise-open 5.4.0.42111-2ubuntu1 on 10.04 64 bit

The CacheEntryExpire setting seems to be ignored. I changed the setting
to: CacheEntryExpiry=dword:0013C680 then imported the registry file
and issued a lw-refresh-configuration. Cleared the cache, rebooted the
machine and logged in with a domain user. This worked as expected.

Next I took the machine down, removed it from the network and booted. I
was able to login used cached credentials. However 4 hours later I ran
into problems. getent returned no information and logging on with the
user was not allowed anymore (user not found). Since 4h
(dword:3840) is the default value it would seem that my updated
entry was not picked up by lsassd.
+
+ IMPACT
+ ==
+ Having a short 4h expiration period prevents laptops from being used for any
length of time outside the corporate network, including even overnight. Not
being able to effectively change this setting prevents the software from being
deployed in enterprise environments.
+
+ TEST CASE
+ =
+
+ 1. Install likewise-open
+
+ 2. using lwregshell, check registry value for CacheEntryExpiry:
+
+ [HKEY_THIS_MACHINE\Services\lsass\Parameters\Providers\ActiveDirectory]^M

I tried the above command line, however it did not remove automatix. I

And replace yours sources.list with the one attached to this bug.

Done.

Now when I use the menu option System / Administration / Update Manager

the upgrade begins normally then ends with a error.

[Bug 129746] Re: can't get out of read-only mode in Evolution calendar

2007-11-01 Thread Peter Eric Williams

Hi,

I think I have the same problem with Evolution program's calendar.
After successfully using the calendar (in Evolution) for several month,
it has changed itself to read only.

Evolution Error

Cannot create a new event

You have a read-only calendar source selected. Change to Calendar View
and highlight a calendar that can accept appointments.

[ OK ]

Regards,

PEW { Peter E Williams }

from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia

[Bug 107405] This gmail account was controlled by 'phishers'.

2007-10-30 Thread Peter Eric Williams
Hello All,

Note: This message is being sent BCC to contacts in my gmail address
book.

If you received an email from this email address, apparently from me, on
approx 16 Oct 2007 or there abouts -- then you would have received it from a
'phisher' (person/s) who took control of my email account. I won't go into
the details, however, I now have control of my gmail email address (this
email account).

Note that the 'phisher's email stated that I had an uncle who was dying and
asking for money. Apparently it was sent from somewhere in Africa.

2007-04-18 Thread Peter Eric Williams
Hello,

correct area?

I have a mental illness normally I can cope pretty well.

I am finding the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/ to be very confusing

Please help me by moving my query to the correct area!!! I found it very
very difficult to even post the query. It took me a long time to do!!!

Yours Sincerely,
