[Bug 988079] Re: Dismal performance on HP Z600 with 30 landscape monitor

2012-05-11 Thread Etienne Goyer
I think /var/log/Xorg.o.log and the output of lspci -vvnn would be a
good start. Also, I think using nvidia-settings creates an
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file; if you have that, it would be interesting to
have to.

[Bug 953494] Re: bcm_wimax module hangs when Sierra Wireless 250U Data Card removed

2012-05-07 Thread Etienne Goyer
The .exe Jason refer to is the Windows driver for that adapter. It can
be downloaded without a registration, unlike the Developer Pack
discussed in the bug description. The .exe is actually a self-
extracting zip file, and the firmware files (macxvi200.bin and .cfg) are
in ./CommonAppData/Sprint/Sprint
SmartView/drivers/wimax/xp/32Bit/Beceem/Beceem 5.2.6.8_P3/.

[Bug 950794] Re: Personal settings are lost after upgrading to LibreOffice 3.5/Precise

2012-04-12 Thread Etienne Goyer
Not directly related to this bug, here's a tangential question: are the
profile personal setting from OO.org 3.2.0 on lucid get migrated to
LibreOffice 3.5.2 during LTS-to-LTS upgrade? I presume not; if that is
the case, perhaps it ought to be documented in the release note.

[Bug 979319] [NEW] [FFe] sudo do not remember password when std(in|out|err) are not connected to a terminal

2012-04-11 Thread Etienne Goyer
Public bug reported:

sudo will not remember the password (and thus prompt for it) when none
of stdin, stdout and stderr are connected to a terminal. In certain
use-cases, this could be problematic. For example, in a build script
where std(in|out|err) are all connected to pipes. See discussion at
http://code.google.com/p/chromium-os/issues/detail?id=18393 for such a
use-case.

There is a commit upstream that resolve this problem:

http://www.sudo.ws/repos/sudo/rev/b9dfce12af85

Would it be possible to consider the above commit for inclusion in precise?

[Bug 953494] Re: bcm_wimax module hangs when Sierra Wireless 250U Data Card removed

2012-03-21 Thread Etienne Goyer
Chris, I will let Thomas or someone else affected confirm or infirm
this, but from what I gather from the description, using the lucid
2.6.32 kernel, it just work out of the box without having to manually
add any firmware files. Moreover, installing the two files in question
(macxvi200.bin and macxvi.cfg) appears to be all that is needed to make
the adapter work properly on linux-image-generic-lts-backport-natty
2.6.38.13.23.

Can Thomas or Jason confirm this?

Actually, just to be entirely clear, after installing the opencryptoki
package, if you run pkcsconf -i, it does not return the error. You
need to run pkcs11_startup first. Then, it fails with the
C_GetSlotCount error described above.

[Bug 880104] Re: Using pam_group results in: pam_group(lightdm:setcred): unable to set the group membership for user: operation not permitted

2012-02-07 Thread Etienne Goyer
Marking confirmed. It is actually pretty trivial to reproduce, no need
for a network directory (such as LDAP) for that.

Step to reproduce:

1. Create a dummy group to test:

$ sudo addgroup test

2. configure pam_group:

$ echo *; *; *; Al-2400 | sudo tee -a /etc/security/group.con
$ echo auth optional pam_group.so | sudo tee -a /etc/pam.d/common-auth

3. Log in through LightDM, and run the id command from a terminal. Notice
you are not member of group test.

4. Switch to VT using Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log in (or, alternatively, log in
throughssh). Run the id command, and notice you *are* member of group test.

Tested on precise, amd64, lightdm 1.1.1-0ubuntu4.

[Bug 688550] Re: portmap/statd can not be restarted

2012-02-02 Thread Etienne Goyer
Debian package portmap 6.0.0-5 in experimental has patch 06-615642
-reuse-socket.diff that makes portmap set SO_REUSEADDR. I do not
understand what the LOOPBACK_SETUNSET #define actually do, but it
basically removes it.

It's also worth noting that rpcbind suffers from bug #924593, which is
quite similar and that upstream resolved by setting the SO_REUSEADDR
option.

[Bug 801778] [NEW] Regression: Firefox 3.6.18 do not set cookie when talking to single letter hostname

2011-06-24 Thread Etienne Goyer
Public bug reported:

When talking to an hostname consisting of a single letter, Firefox
3.6.18 does not set cookie. Previous version did fine, as well as other
browser such as chromium.

How to reproduce:

sudo apt-get install lighttpd
sudo lighttpd-enable-mod cgi
sudo vim /etc/hosts

make 'a' go to 127.0.0.1 as in:

root@machine:/var/www# head -n1 /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost a

Then simply install the attached python cgi and go to it in
firefox-3.6.18. In our tests it never set a cookie. When testing with
Chrome, it sets the cookie fine.

root@machine:/var/www# lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS

[Bug 670571] Re: Segmentation fault in Marshal.load

2011-06-23 Thread Etienne Goyer
Mark, no problem, and no apologies required. Fundamentally, the problem
is that we do not have a corresponding upstream commit that would fix
the bug. In fact, it's not entirely clear whether the bug is fixed
upstream or not. Without a good knowledge of the Ruby interpreter code
base, it is close to impossible to figure out exactly what is going on.

Also, from what I understand, Dave committed a fix in natty for the
specific test-case we currently have (posted by Dan Van Derveer). Does
that fix actually address the problem as you experience it? If so, then
I guess it could be considered for lucid. If not, then we will need a
more specific test-case.

Dave, does the above make any sense to you?

[Bug 670571] Re: Segmentation fault in Marshal.load

2011-06-01 Thread Etienne Goyer
Indeed, the test-case is resolved in natty. That does not mean the
underlying bug is fixed, though.

Mark, we'll need to know whether the underlying bug is indeed fixed or
not in upstream Ruby, and ideally figure which commit fixed it. Failing
that, a better (more specific?) test-case that segfault
deterministically would help, although it's not guaranteed.

[Bug 572869] Re: CUPS is unable to authenticate using kerberos (known bug)

2011-05-25 Thread Etienne Goyer
To add to what Bart said above, CUPS backend are executed as user lp if
they are world-executable, and by root is the backend is only executable
by root. If the backend is to retrieve the user's credential, it has to
be executed as root or as the user itself. So if you write a wrapper
script for the smb backend, you need to make sure it is executable only
by root.

Having a wrapper script setting KRB5CCNAME is a possible solution, but a
more elegant one is to invoke smbspool as the user submitting the job,
in which case it will pick up the Kerberos ticket just fine and do the
right thing by itself. Minimally, something like the following would
work:

--
#!/bin/bash
su -c /usr/bin/smbspool $1 $2 \$3\ $4 \$5\ $2
--

Nikke, I am not sure the problem you report is what we are actually talking
about. The upstream CUPS bug you point to describe a different problem than
the one we are having in Ubuntu, where Kerberos authentication is not even
attempted in the first place. Can you describe your setup and your problem in
more details?

[Bug 788167] [NEW] CUPS cannot print to Kerberos-authenticated SMB print queue

2011-05-25 Thread Etienne Goyer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

That was investigated on maverick (cups 1.4.4) and natty (cups 1.4.6).

CUPS in Ubuntu cannot authenticate using Kerberos to an SMB print queue,
such as one in an Active Directory. This is because the smb backend is
being invoked as user lp, and this user cannot access the Kerberos
credential cache of the user who submitted the job. When trying to
print, the job is held for authentication, and a dialog prompting for
username/password is being shown. On Windows (and possibly other OS),
the user would not be prompted if he has a ticket in the Kerberos realm
(ie, logged on to the domain) he is trying to print to.

The CUPS smb backend on Ubuntu is the smbspool binary provided by Samba.
When run as a user, it will pick the Kerberos credential cache by itself
and authenticate seamlessly. Otherwise, it will read the KRB5CCNAME
environment variable and try to use that when possible.

There is two possible solutions to that:

- Invoke the smb backend as root and pass it the KRB5CCNAME environment
variable pointing to the user's Kerberos credential cache. CUPS execute
the backend as user lp if it is world-executable, which is currently the
case on Ubuntu. User lp do not have the permission to read the user's
credential cache, hence why the smb backend would need to be executed as
root (by removing the world-executable bit). Also, CUPS does not
currently set KRB5CCNAME before invoking the smb backend (see
http://www.cups.org/str.php?L3847).

- Execute smbspool as the user submitting the job.

I presume we would have the same problem with other backend that would do
Kerberos authentication, although I do not know of a specific one. I have only
tested and investigated with the smb backend.

[Bug 767308] [NEW] Apparmor SSL abstraction does not allow read access to /usr/local/share/ca-certificates

2011-04-20 Thread Etienne Goyer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apparmor

Adding a custom CA certificate to /usr/local/share/ca-certificates and
registering it using /usr/sbin/update-ca-certificates, daemon that have
been apparmor-ified (such as slapd) cannot access the custom CA
certificate.

Below is an example using slapd on lucid:

ubuntu@directory:~$ sudo service slapd start

The operation failed but no output was produced. For hints on what went
wrong please refer to the system's logfiles (e.g. /var/log/syslog) or
try running the daemon in Debug mode like via slapd -d 16383 (warning:
this will create copious output).

Below, you can find the command line options used by this script to
run slapd. Do not forget to specify those options if you
want to look to debugging output:

[Bug 736737] [NEW] timeoutd lock screen of the currently logged in user when terminating background session

2011-03-17 Thread Etienne Goyer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: timeoutd

On lucid, timeoutd would lock the screen of the foreground user when
terminating an idle background session.

Steps to reproduce:

- Install timeoutd

- Edit /etc/timeouts to add the following line:

Al:*:*:*:3:0:0:1

The above will kill sessions after three minutes of inactivity, warning
one minute before.

- Log in as one user, switch session to a second user.

- In the second session, do something (so as to not trigger the timeout
for the foreground session). After three minutes, the background
session will be terminated, and the foreground session is sent to the
GDM, where he can log back in his currently running session.

Intended results: the foreground session should not be affected by the
background session being terminated.

[Bug 707705] Re: Vino not accepting incoming connection to more than a single desktop session when the network_interfaces=lo option is set

I noticed that I forgot to attach the server output described above.
Here it is.

** Description changed:

[Bug 735369] [NEW] Bacula Admin Tool (bat) does not work well with Qt 4.6.2 in Lucid

2011-03-15 Thread Etienne Goyer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bacula-console-qt

On lucid, in the Version Browser of bat, it is impossible to check the
latest version of a file. This is described in the following upstream
bug report: http://bugs.bacula.org/view.php?id=1550 (login using
anonymous/anonymous)

For convenience, here is the verbatim of the bug description:

--
I often restore a single file, so I use Version Browser.

1) I browse for the file and when clicking on it, I see many different versions
of it.
2) When I try to mark the file (tick the checkbox), it cannot be done
3) When I try to mark the most recent version of the file in 'Versions of
File', it cannot be done
4) When I try to mark any other version of the file, it works OK
5) When there's another version of the file available (after the next backup),
the version which couldn't be marked, can now be marked and the most recent can
not

It seems to be so for every job and every file within a job.

I turned on all the debugging options of Bat, but there's nothing said when
marking (or trying to) files/versions.
-

Response from the lead developer of Bacula:

-
I am unable to reproduce this. It works fine with my version of bat. You are
using a bat that was most likely compiled with Qt 4.6.2, and bat is known not
to work with all versions of Qt because they are, unfortunately, not compatible.

You must use a bat compiled with Qt 4.3.4. All the project binaries are
compiled with Qt 4.3.4 using the released depkgs-qt code.
-

Lucid indeed ship with Qt 4.6.2. I can confirm that bat does not show
this problem on maverick, which ship Qt 4.7.0. To confirm the problem
is related to the version of Qt being used, I backported bacula-console-
qt (5.0.2) from maverick to lucid. The resulting binary showed the same
bug as the bacula-console-qt package from lucid.

2011-03-14 Thread Etienne Goyer
We can reliably reproduce this bug here too. You can connect by shh,
but the graphical interface appears completely frozen (except for the
cursor). The Xorg process spins at 100%.

We tried using Chromium instead of Firefox, and could not reproduce the
problem. That seems to indicate that the problem is triggered by the
Flash plugin. I tried disabling Flash altogether, but the page UI would
not work without Flash at all (and would not work with Gnash either :(
).

[Bug 721514] [NEW] Samba should be more selective when importing accounts

2011-02-18 Thread Etienne Goyer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

The Samba postinst maintainer script systematically import all account
with uid = 1000. This is so that user account and such have
corresponding Samba account. In most case, this is a good thing and
make. However, where the machine has been configured with a network
directory as the source of user account (ie, using nss_ldap), this may
not be desirable. Especially if the network directory host a large
number of user accounts, this could be very wasteful.

The behavior of the account import is preseedable with the
samba/generate_smbpasswd debconf template. This is good, but it's an
either/or proposition.

Perhaps it would be better if we where only importing local users (those
listed in /etc/passwd)? We could do that by specifying the compat
service to getent (-s compat) in the samba.postinst maintainer script,
such as:

if [ ${GENERATE_SMBPASSWD} = true -a ! -e /var/lib/samba/passdb.tdb -a ! -e
/etc/samba/smbpasswd ]; then
getent -s compat passwd | mksmbpasswd /etc/samba/smbpasswd
pdbedit -i smbpasswd -e tdbsam -d 0
rm /etc/samba/smbpasswd
fi

I guess the implication owuld need to be considered, and the first thing is to
decide whether there is a good reason to import the non-local account in Samba.

[Bug 302148] Re: Installing wine starts winbindd as a daemon

2011-02-08 Thread Etienne Goyer
As Thierry and Anders pointed out above, this might be causing breakage.
See bug #605326, for example.

Considering we are installing recommended package by default, this ought
to be reviewed. I think winbind should be made a Suggests of wine
instead, since the NTLM authentication feature is not something most
users will actually need or want. That's what Debian does too.

I do not see how this could be fixed in samba. Spinning ntlm_auth in
its own package would not help, as it would (likely) depends in turn on
winbind. I am retargeting this bug to wine again (sorry, Scott) so it
can get some discussion.

** Package changed: samba (Ubuntu) = wine (Ubuntu)

[Bug 247746] Re: winbind should be downgraded to Recommends

2011-02-08 Thread Etienne Goyer
Considering the wine Recommends on winbind is actually causing breakage
in some circumstance (see bug #605326), I think it really ought to be a
Suggests. I will pursue that in bug #302148, since this one is Fix
Released.
