[Bug 1915911] Re: Tomcat9 package is old version with many security issues

2022-03-31 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Hi Paulo,
Thanks for looking into this and sorry that I forgot bionic actually. Did all
go well?
I have some other small bugfixes for this package at #1964881 (although not
security related and there are no code changes to source). I am not sure if you
would like to combine them or not?
Thanks!

[Bug 1964881] Re: Logging/Log rotation does not work for catalina.out

2022-03-28 Thread Evren Yurtesen
I prepared a patch fixing this bug. Solved the issue by changing
rsyslogd and logrotated's tomcat config using syslog:adm permissions.

This should be possible to apply to 22.04 and 21.10. Probably not to
focal/20.04 as it is missing the patch which grants write access to `adm` group
to `/var/log/tomcat9`
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tomcat9/+bug/1861881/comments/4
If combined with that, it can be applied to 20.04 also.

[Bug 1964881] Re: Logging/Log rotation does not work for catalina.out

2022-03-25 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Ideas on possible fixes:

In Ubuntu 20.04

* Perhaps the log directory fix can be backported, in addition this require
solution 2 from below. If solution 1 is applied from below, there would be no
need to backport the fix from the newer package.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tomcat9/+bug/1861881/comments/4

In Ubuntu 21.10/22.04

* Solution possibility 1: As the issue is because of the difference of the user
that `rsyslogd` runs as between Debian and Ubuntu. One solution would be
running `rsyslogd` as root user same as in Debian. This automatically fix
everything for the foreseeable future as the Debian `tomcat` package would work
fine without any modifications.

* Solution possibility 2: modify /etc/logrotate.d/tomcat and replace `su
tomcat adm` with `su syslog adm`. Update `/etc/syslog.d/tomcat9.conf`
and replace `fileOwner="tomcat"` with `fileOwner="syslog"` This fix
should be applied to every time `tomcat` is imported from upstream
Debian.

* Solution possibility 3: Any ideas?

In Ubuntu 20.04, with `tomcat9-9.0.31-1ubuntu0.1` (latest) package,

This could be fixed in a newer package but was not backported:

In Ubuntu 22.04, with `tomcat9-9.0.58-1` (latest) package, `logrotated`

Because the `catalina.out` is created with `syslog:adm` ownerships.
`syslog` user does not have enough permissions to change this.

  This causes following error:

[Bug 1861881] Re: catalina.out not written to, permission issue

2022-03-17 Thread Evren Yurtesen
The fix helps logs to get into catalina.out but now it is impossible to rotate
it.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tomcat9/+bug/1964881

Exactly due to the reason explained by Emmanuel Bourg
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tomcat9/+bug/1861881/comments/3
The rsyslogd runs as syslog:adm but logrotate is set to run as tomcat:adm
therefore not able to truncate the file which is owned by syslog:adm

[Bug 1915911] Re: Tomcat9 package is old version with many security issues

2022-03-17 Thread Evren Yurtesen
* SECURITY UPDATE: TLS Denial of Service
- debian/patches/CVE-2021-41079.patch: Apache Tomcat did not properly
validate incoming TLS packets. When Tomcat was configured to use
NIO+OpenSSL or NIO2+OpenSSL for TLS, a specially crafted packet could be
used to trigger an infinite loop resulting in a denial of service.
- CVE-2021-41079
  * SECURITY UPDATE: Authentication Vulnerability
- debian/patches/CVE-2021-30640.patch: A vulnerability in the JNDI Realm
of Apache Tomcat allows an attacker to authenticate using variations of
a validc user name and/or to bypass some of the protection provided by
  the LockOut Realm.
- CVE-2021-30640
  * SECURITY UPDATE: Request Smuggling
- debian/patches/CVE-2021-33037.patch: Apache Tomcat did not correctly
parse the HTTP transfer-encoding request header in some circumstances
leading to the possibility to request smuggling when used with a reverse
proxy. Specifically: - Tomcat incorrectly ignored the transfer encoding
  header if the client declared it would only accept an HTTP/1.0 response;
  - Tomcat honoured the identify encoding; and - Tomcat did not ensure
that, if present, the chunked encoding was the final encoding.
- CVE-2021-33037
  * SECURITY UPDATE: remote code execution via session persistence
- debian/patches/CVE-2021-25329.patch: The fix for CVE-2020-9484 was
incomplete. When using Apache Tomcat with a configuration edge case that
was highly unlikely to be used, the Tomcat instance was still vulnerable
to CVE-2020-9494. Note that both the previously published prerequisites
for CVE-2020-9484 and the previously published mitigations for
CVE-2020-9484 also apply to this issue.
- CVE-2021-25329
  * SECURITY UPDATE: Request Header Duplication
- debian/patches/CVE-2021-25122.patch: When responding to new h2c
connection requests, Apache Tomcat could duplicate request headers and a
limited amount of request body from one request to another meaning user
A and user B could both see the results of user A's request.
- CVE-2021-25122
  * SECURITY UPDATE: HTTP/2 request header mix-up
- debian/patches/CVE-2020-17527.patch: HTTP/2 It was discovered that
Apache Tomcat could re-use an HTTP request header value from the previous
stream received on an HTTP/2 connection for the request associated with
the subsequent stream. While this would most likely lead to an error and
the closure of the HTTP/2 connection, it is possible that information
  could leak between requests.
- CVE-2020-17527
  * SECURITY UPDATE: HTTP/2 request mix-up
- debian/patches/CVE-2020-13943.patch: If an HTTP/2 client exceeded the
agreed maximum number of concurrent streams for a connection (in
violation of the HTTP/2 protocol), it was possible that a subsequent
request made on that connection could contain HTTP headers - including
HTTP/2 pseudo headers - from a previous request rather than the intended
headers. This could lead to users seeing responses for unexpected
  resources.
- CVE-2020-13943

The reason of missing `catalina.out` in Ubuntu 20.04 is that the
`/var/log/tomcat` does not have group write permission. Therefore `syslog` user
which executes `rsyslogd` is not able to write to `/var/log/tomcat` folder.

A common problem between Ubuntu 20.04/22.04 is that the
`/etc/rsyslog.d/tomcat9.conf` file does not have the following setting:
`fileOwner="tomcat"` (which exists in upstream Debian `tomcat9` package
supplied `/etc/rsyslog.d/tomcat9.conf` file)

Because of the missing `fileOwner` setting, the `catalina.out` is
created with `syslog:adm` ownerships. However the
`/etc/logrotate.d/tomcat9` has `su tomcat adm` directive. Therefore the
`logrotated` is not able to truncate the `/var/log/tomcat/catalina.out`

This causes logrotate to copy the contents of
`/var/log/tomcat/catalina.out` to as if it would be rotated. As
`catalina.out` is never truncated, each rotated file ends up having the
contents of `catalina.out` from the beginning of the tomcat
installation. This causes the log sizes to keep increasing as no actual
log rotation is being done.

[Bug 1962493] [NEW] Compiled with Java 11

2022-02-28 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Public bug reported:

It appears 4.21-1 version of this package was compiled with Java 11. If check
the classes in this package with `file` I see version 55.0 (Java SE 11). This
causes errors such as:
```
with root cause java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError:
org/eclipse/jdt/internal/compiler/Compiler has been compiled by a more recent
version of the Java Runtime (class file version 55.0), this version of the Java
Runtime only recognizes class file versions up to 52.0
```

For compatibility reasons it should be compiled using Java 8. Otherwise
many apps will fail to function eg. with Tomcat.

[Bug 1670624] Re: Official 16.04 HWE 4.8 kernels do not boot (4.4 was booting)

2017-03-07 Thread Evren Yurtesen
When I was installing the kernel it complained about possibly missing firmware
files for amdgpu.
Then it failed first but I blacklisted amdgpu module and it booted.

Then I tried to install amdgpu-pro but that couldn't compile the module
since it doesnt support 4.11. But I think it may have installed some
firmware files and I could load the amdgpu module after boot.

But, then I decided to try to disable amdgpu for 4.8 (worst idea ever!).
Apparently everytime I boot 4.8, it destroys something from the hard
drive. It somehow managed to loose /var/lib/dpkg first but after few
reboots, completely lost the whole partition and even grub didnt start.
I am never putting 4.8 again!

So, for now, I can't really test anything anymore since ubuntu self-
destructed itself. Luckily windows and freebsd are still working. Maybe
I wait for Zesty before re-installing.

About 4.11 kernel:

I can tell that at last the basic keyboard was working in Linux/Ubuntu.
Because with 4.4 it was skipping keypresses.

The touchpad was much better, but still somewhat strange. Things like
double tap and two-finger scrolling didn't work. At least mouse cursor
was not jumping around randomly from time to time.

The WIFI didn't work, I had to install rtlwifi_new driver from github.

The hard drive was super slow, maybe even slower than before. I saw
0.6mbyte/s performance when I ran sysbench.

The CPU fan was going full speed and laptop got hot. (least of my
worries but it happened...)

I would like to help more but I don't know what I can do at this stage.
I am not even sure why amdgpu module was loaded, because the APU has sea
islands gpu, I thought this was disabled by default? Did this change in
4.11?

[Bug 1670624] [NEW] Official 16.04 HWE 4.8 kernels do not boot (4.4 was booting)

2017-03-07 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Public bug reported:

The machine is the same machine as in this bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1616830

In mid 2016 I tested 4.8 kernels on that machine and they did not boot. (and
same errors apply to current situation)
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1616830/comments/5

Also Ubuntu 16.10 and newer releases do not boot anymore (as reported by a
user, I think it is due to kernel). He also reports the same errors with the
4.8 kernel.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1616830/comments/15

It seems that official release kernels still have the same problems and
nothing was fixed.

There seem to be many problems with Ubuntu on Carrizo, black screens,
random freezes. I myself experienced, keyboard problems (keyboard
sometimes do not register keystrokes), touchpad works strangely, random
freeze with caps-lock blinking, low disk performance (max 1.3mbytes/sec)
and much more.

I do not understand how hardware support can be getting worse and worse,
but that seems to be the case.

[Bug 1642078] Re: Black screen at startup on Carrizo

2017-03-06 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Are you sure the black screens are your only problem?

I have problems with keyboard missing keypresses, touchpad doing strange
stuff, hard drive performance, random crashes and caps-lock blinks, wifi
required driver from github and manual setting of antenna. I ran
sysbench and disk was performing at about 1.3mb/s speed only! There was
at least 1 other person who wrote to my bug report that he was having
the same problems.

With 4.8 hwe kernel, it does not even boot anymore. Looking at all the
bug reports, the problems seem to be only getting worse and worse with
updates. It is almost like linux is trying to irradicate AMD machines...

Here is my bug report for the hard drive performance, are you able to replicate
it?

[Bug 1616830] Re: Bad disk performance with AMD Carrizo FCH controllers

2016-12-18 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Srijan Kumar Sharma, to be honest I thought about making separate bug
reports but I think maybe Linux kernel is sponsored by Intel or
something. Because all my bug reports related to machines with AMD
processors got silently ignored after making me collect information
after information. So I decided that I would wait and see if this
specific bug report would get fixed or not before doing more bug
reports. So far 3 months and nothing. Usually what happens is that after
about a year the ticket will be updated and say that the hardware is
obsolete, or this version of linux kernel is old so I need to re-collect
all the information again..

[Bug 1616830] Re: Bad disk performance with AMD Carrizo FCH controllers

2016-08-30 Thread Evren Yurtesen
The 4.8 kernels do not boot at all. I had very strange results. First it
gave errors about soft lockup. But the hardware is perfectly fine, I am
running windows and xenial (albeit slow) with no crashes or errors. Also
ran memtest and everything was fine.

The generic 4.8 is somewhat trying to boot but there are a pile of
errors ranging from

AMD-Vi: Completion loop timed out
invalid magic
invalid ELF header
IOTLB_INV_TIMEOUT

The low-latency well...

So, long story short, I can't tell if this is fixed in 4.8 kernels

It was a fresh install of xenial, I just got the laptop a short while
ago and installed ubuntu in virtualbox, but now I wanted to try to run
it natively.

I can try an older 12.04 release if you want that I test older kernels
or maybe install an older kernel directly if I find them around :),
because ubuntu is currently totally unusable anyway. So it is ok to
erase it.

Yes, I will try to test it now. I will return back to you soon.

[Bug 1616830] [NEW] Bad disk performance with AMD Carrizo FCH controllers

2016-08-25 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Public bug reported:

I have had a problem where importing database was much slower in a dual-
boot machine when booted into ubuntu compared to running ubuntu inside
virtualbox in windows 10. It seems Ubuntu does not like Amd carrizo fch

I collected some information and posted here (and attached as text file to
report):
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/360373

To put it short, the disk performs up to 10 times better inside
virtualbox. (yes I thought about caches but VM box also has half the
memory and they must favor ubuntu running on real hardware with twice
ram)

I believe this is a kernel/driver related problem since it directly
effects disk performance.

[Bug 1559245] Re: Pulseaudio selects HSP instead of A2DP and no way to set default action

2016-05-12 Thread Evren Yurtesen
If you can not change it, then there may be a different problem.
Because I can change it from command line and also if you check the launchpad
link in my first post, you can see I wrote a script to do it automatically.
(the first .sh script has the command line in my launchpad answers post)

[Bug 1559245] [NEW] Pulseaudio selects HSP instead of A2DP and no way to set default action

2016-03-19 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Public bug reported:

I am trying to use a bluetooth headphone with ubuntu 14.04 and system
defaults to using HSP. The problem is that Once it connects, it should
use A2DP and become default device because I am using it from KODI and
it is very inconvenient to set it from command line. Otherwise HSP is
providing very bad quality audio. There is no way to set a default
action, and system does not retain the last set setting. Eg. I can go
and set the headphones to use A2DP but when I connect next time, it
switches back to HSP. (I believe it could remember the device from the
device id at least!)

I asked about this on launchpad answers and somebody closed it and said I
should report it as a bug. If you think this shouldn't have been reported as a
bug, blame the person who closed my question at launchpad answers :) Below is
the link to it and more information and the ugly workaround I implemented in my
system:

I have been hit by this bug also. Also dhcpd starts normally with dhcp
user but if restarted using the script in init.d, it starts another

2013-10-23 Thread Evren Yurtesen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1068404 ***

I think this is not a duplicate of the bug #1068404. In some cases
between fglrx updates the login prompt appears but unity does not start
after logging in. However logging in as a guest user (with fresh
configuration) works. Also removing all configuration from user's
homedir (forcing reset) also brings back to desktop.

This is not the same bug, because the poster clearly states that the
lightdm login prompt appears. This means X does not crash at startup. If
you look at the bug #1068404, it is clearly stated that the X crashes at
startup and it is a different bug.

[Bug 1045326] Re: using valgrind with mpirun causes problems

2013-01-23 Thread Evren Yurtesen
The problem continues on freshly installed Ubuntu 12.10. It is due to
compile options Ubuntu is using and not a bug in mpich2, therefore I am
not sure what mpich2 developers can do in this situation. It is up to
Ubuntu...

[Bug 1045326] Re: using valgrind with mpirun causes problems

2012-09-08 Thread Evren Yurtesen
I tried to compile mpich2 from sources and the problem seems to be
related to checkpointing (blcr package).

blcr does not seem to work properly with kernel 3.x+ since kernel module does
not compile

So, since it is sort of useless without the kernel module (and since nobody
could be using this unusable feature):
https://upc-bugs.lbl.gov/blcr/doc/html/FAQ.html#patch

Why does ubuntu have to enable BLCR when compiling mpich2? Isnt it
possible to not enable checkpointing?

If I compile mpich2 without ' --enable-checkpointing --with-hydra-
ckpointlib=blcr 'configure options, then everything works fine.

Also, as a side note, can you upgrade mpich2 to 1.4.1p1? (Fedora seem to have
1.4.1p1 since FC15!)

[Bug 1045326] Re: using valgrind with mpirun causes problems

2012-09-04 Thread Evren Yurtesen
I believe the problem is related to Ubuntu providing something wrong and
not a bug mpich2. I have mpich2 working fine on SL6. I will try to
compile my own mpich2 installation on ubuntu and re-test on again and
return back.

I just have bad flu now,, so it might take a week or so before I can
return back with more detailed information. But as I pointed out before,
this seem to have happened to a person before who updated his libraries
but not mpich2 installation. (as far as I understand from the thread I
mentioned in my first post).

[Bug 1045326] [NEW] using valgrind with mpirun causes problems

2012-09-03 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Public bug reported:

I am compiling a test program on 12.04 with latest updates:

It works fine normally:
$ ./a.out

The number of processes is 1

  Process 0 says Hello, world!

I have manually compiled Valgrind 3.8 and I am getting the same error, which
makes me think that the problem is mpich2.

Also I found a thread which mentions that somebody had same problem fixed by
upgrading mpich2 from 1.3 to 1.4 but we already have 1.4.1 in ubuntu, so
perhaps an update to 1.4.1p1 would be good? (I think it has nothing to do with
the versions but perhaps compiling against newer libraries does help).
http://lists.mcs.anl.gov/pipermail/mpich-discuss/2011-August/010608.html

if the problem is libcr, then somebody must put a note to recompile
mpich2 package everytime libcr is updated.

[Bug 1038432] [NEW] Additional Drivers feature is behaving strangely....

2012-08-18 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Public bug reported:

On my laptop with AMD E-450 processor, I see that Additional drivers
suggest 2 options for graphics drivers.

* Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators
* ATI Fire GL

I selected Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators and it
installed activated it. However after reboot I see that ATI Fire GL is
activated. When I click on it, I see This driver is activated but not
currently in use and Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators
NOT active.

I re-activate Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators and
apply, I see that it is deactivated after reboot.

I am not sure why this is suppose to be so confusing. Cant there be only
a single option which is AMD graphics accelerator driver?

[Bug 1036622] Re: Slow NIS performance with programs such as 'finger'

2012-08-15 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Well, it is not like I use NIS at home all by myself :p if Ubuntu wont
support it, just remove it from distribution then. So it would make the
decision of which distro to use in large organisations easier.

I checked the packets using tcpdump limited to the NIS server.

Ubuntu had 24k lines in the output file
Fedora had 2.4k lines in the output file

Fedora was accessing port 767 and accessed an additional UDP port 770
and sometimes 938 on the server... while Ubuntu was just accessing 767
only so many more times...

I tried disabling iptables on ubuntu altogether and still the results
are same. It is just that I am getting the correct info as well and
finger seems to be working. I am not sure what might be timing out.

[Bug 1036622] [NEW] Slow NIS performance with programs such as 'finger'

2012-08-14 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Public bug reported:

I am having slow NIS performance compared to Fedora with nearly
identical configurations. I couldnt quite find out exactly what might be
the problem and I also tried asking it as a question in answers
section. All I got was a reply that I should open a bug report.

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/205634

The yp.conf is identical between Fedora and Ubuntu boxes in question. I
am guessing Fedora caches the NIS information somehow. But I am not sure
exactly why this does not happen in Ubuntu?

Do you have any suggestions???

2012-08-08 Thread Evren Yurtesen
I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 to a desktop machine with Radeon HD 5870
and compiz is using 100% when the screen is off. I didnt try any of the
workarounds on this machine. There are so many workarounds mentioned and
half of them seem to work only for half of the people. I dont know where
to start... Why compiz can not stop itself when the screen is off (since
there is nothing to show?) ...strange...

[Bug 1007368] Re: AMD Catalyst FGLRX post-release updates driver does not install

2012-06-01 Thread Evren Yurtesen
You are right. I seem to have the latest driver from the 'additional
drivers' but there is still something strange going on. We just had a
new installation of Ubuntu 12.04 and AMD CCC showed different numbers
there while the 12.04 in my machine which was installed a while back
showed different numbers. (and I thought that was because I used AMDs
installer to install newest version directly, but it appears I did
not...)

Unfortunately the other machine is not here now so I cant check it, but
on tuesday we will re-check the installations and report back if we find
or not find some discrepancies...

It would be nice if the additional drivers section would print out a
more understandable error message, also it is not very clear what
happens if you select only post-release updates or both normal driver +
post-release updates (wouldnt these both end up the same latest driver
being installed?)

[Bug 998722] [NEW] Disabling Bluetooth also disables Wi-Fi

2012-05-13 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Public bug reported:

I have a Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 which has bluetooth and wifi. I am
using the 'additional drivers' provided by ubuntu.

When I disable bluetooth from the top bar, wifi powers down too. It is
possible to disable bluetooth separatelly in Windows.

This happens on 12.04 LTS with latest packages (by today)

2012-05-13 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Public bug reported:

on Ubuntu 12.04 LTE the virt-manager does not function after
installation.

The installation is done by following:

The message is:
Error: No active connection to install on.

I have found a forum entry where other people were having the same problem and
there are more details there:

[Bug 998724] Re: virt-manager does not fuunction after installation

2012-05-13 Thread Evren Yurtesen
I could resolve this issue by adding my user to kvm and libvirtd groups.

$ sudo adduser `id -un` kvm
$ sudo adduser `id -un` libvirtd

I believe the installer either should suggest adding the user to these
groups or virt-manager should become root by asking credentials at
startup.

After adding myself to groups, I got stuck at the following reported problem:

[Bug 969860] Re: [fglrx] compiz uses 100% CPU when screen turns off (spinning in glXWaitVideoSyncSGI or glXSwapBuffers)

2012-04-29 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Same problem HP dm1z-4100 (amd e-450)
Setting Force full screen redraw (buffer swap) on repaint seems to improve
performance overall, compiz normally uses 60-80% cpu when moving a window
(crazy right?) and when set Force full screen redraw (buffer swap) on repaint
it uses only ~30%.

Also the cpu usage is near zero % when the screen is off with the Force
full screen redraw (buffer swap) on repaint option.

[Bug 982460] Re: Installer crashed at installation...thats all I know...

2012-04-16 Thread Evren Yurtesen
Hello,

The target media in question was a 16GB Transcend Ultra-Speed USB stick.
Now the stick was working fine under normal use in windows. Although I
am using it on a brand new AMD Fusion laptop HP Pavilion dm1-4100.

I could install Ubuntu when I tried again. However it crashed at some
point, it couldnt find any commands (I was in ssh) and I couldnt shut it
down either. So I guess it is possible that it lost the stick again.

So, the question is, how can I test the stick in windows to find out
that this is not related to stick itself but perhaps something Ubuntu
does (perhaps a bad driver?) is causing this problem?

Is there a practical way that you can suggest with which I can test the
stick under Ubuntu?

I am fairly sure that the stick is performing alright, I never had a
similar issue with this stick earlier.

Thanks,
Evren
