[Bug 1847823] [NEW] High CPU usage of dbus-daemon for minutes after passing a path to a program to open
Public bug reported: I can experience very high CPU usage by dbus-daemon and delayed opening of programs like leafpad and vlc. CPU usage of dbus-daemon is 100% of a CPU core for 3 to 5 minutes if I do one of the below operations: a) launching leafpad from thunar to open a text file (double-clicking on the file) b) running the command "leafpad /path-to-file/file.txt" c) launching vlc from thunar to open a video file d) pressing Alt+F2 so as to open the Application Launcher e) pressing Ctrl+Alt+T to open xfce4-terminal f) opening xfce-taskmanager by clicking on the tray widget in xfce4-panel. When I experience the above problem, a reboot can solve the problem, but sometimes the problem disappears after some time without rebooting. I am considering upgrading from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 just to eliminate this bug. My system is up-to-date. [Bug 1543899] Re: update-apt-xapian-index crashed with UnicodeDecodeError in record(): 'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0xe3 in position 349: invalid continuation byte
I installed version 0.49 from Debian. I had to purge version 0.47 (from Ubuntu) first. That way I could update the index. So the following steps worked for me: purge the Ubuntu package, then install the Debian version. The answer of knarf on ubuntuforums.org says: "The xapian index is used for the search box in synaptic. If you can live without that functionality you can purge the apt-xapian-index package" https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1617639&p=10159339#post10159339 I found that I don't need the quick search function of synaptic provided by the apt-xapian-index package as much as I need the 145 MB of disk space that the index uses, so I removed the package. The removal of the package affected only the quick search box. The search button is still there in synaptic and that is enough for me. [Bug 1623724] Re: [Hewlett-Packard HP ProBook 6470b] hibernate/resume failure [non-free: wl]
I tested hibernation with no prior kernel version. Now I tested the upstream kernel (v4.8-rc6) and the bug exists there, too. That kernel however caused strange things. The processor cores hit 100 % usage right after login. I opened a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T), started htop but the terminal became blank and another core hit 100%. This happened to the ps command and the xfce4-taskmanager. I could gain no information of what processes use 100%. Finally the whole system froze. I rebooted a few times so as to be able to test the hibernation. Once the system froze after typing the password on the login screen. ** Tags added: kernel-bug-exists-upstream -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1623724 Title: [Hewlett-Packard HP ProBook 6470b] hibernate/resume failure [non-free: wl] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1623724/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1443214] [NEW] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 23s! [pool:7903]
Public bug reported: Both the mouse and keyboard got frozen. The only response: the browser button blinked 4 times whenever pressed. The screen would turn on/off when closing/opening the lid. I needed to power the notebook off by holding the power button pressed for a few seconds. The notebook is HP Probook 6470b if this helps. This was the first time I experienced this fully uncontrollable state. This may be related to previous random freezes of only the keyboard when I could still use the touchpad. It was not long ago when I updated the kernel the kernel to 'Ubuntu 3.16.0-34.45-generic 3.16.7-ckt8'. [Bug 792085] Re: Automatic remount of safely removed drive
I found two workarounds. Workaround 1) On Xubuntu 14.10 using Thunar 1.6.3 file manager I managed to stop the automatic remount of unmounted USB 3.0 drives using USB 3.0 ports. In Thunar: Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> "Configure the management of removable drives and media." -> "Storage" tab: I unchecked the "Mount removable drives when hot-plugged" option. With this setting, after unmounting the USB 3.0 device in Thunar, 'dmesg | grep USB' has these new lines: [ 1902.911399] usb 4-3: USB disconnect, device number 7 [ 1903.395819] usb 4-3: new SuperSpeed USB device number 8 using xhci_hcd [ 1903.412365] usb 4-3: New USB device found, idVendor=174c, idProduct=55aa [ 1903.412379] usb 4-3: New USB device strings: Mfr=2, Product=3, SerialNumber=1 [ 1903.413049] usb-storage 4-3:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected The USB 3.0 external HDD stops for a second and starts spinning after that (like before unchecking the mentioned preference), the device can be seen in /dev/ but is not mounted. As a side-effect of this, thunar doesn't automount drives plugged in. Workaround 2) Instead of using the eject buttons, right-click -> "Unmount" each partition of the device in the file manager (I tested this with Thunar). [Bug 792085] Re: Automatic remount of safely removed drive
I am having this bug on Xubuntu 14.10 (Thunar 1.6.3) when trying to unmount a USB 3.0 Seagate 1TB HDD from a USB 3.0 port. I also experience one second off and remounting after that. I don't have this bug when using USB 2.0 pendrive in USB 3.0 port. dmesg | grep USB #after plugged in a USB 2.0 port [ 1955.357740] usb 1-1.2: new high-speed USB device number 8 using ehci-pci [ 1955.512198] usb 1-1.2: New USB device found, idVendor=0bc2, idProduct=a013 [ 1955.512205] usb 1-1.2: New USB device strings: Mfr=2, Product=3, SerialNumber=1 #unmounting with Thunar, the device starts spinning again but cannot be seen in /dev/sd* [ 2109.543249] usb 1-1.2: USB disconnect, device number 8 #after plugged in a USB 3.0 port [ 2335.126791] usb 4-4: new SuperSpeed USB device number 12 using xhci_hcd [ 2335.143475] usb 4-4: New USB device found, idVendor=0bc2, idProduct=a013 [ 2335.143482] usb 4-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=2, Product=3, SerialNumber=1 #unmounting with Thunar, the device starts spinning again and Thunar opens the remounted media [ 2439.351726] usb 4-4: USB disconnect, device number 12 [ 2439.739404] usb 4-4: new SuperSpeed USB device number 13 using xhci_hcd [ 2439.756138] usb 4-4: New USB device found, idVendor=0bc2, idProduct=a013 [ 2439.756146] usb 4-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=2, Product=3, SerialNumber=1 USB 2.0 pendrive #automount in USB 3.0 port [ 3045.472256] usb 3-4: new high-speed USB device number 3 using xhci_hcd [ 3045.601106] usb 3-4: New USB device found, idVendor=08ec, idProduct=2038 [ 3045.601115] usb 3-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 [ 3045.601698] usb-storage 3-4:1.0: USB Mass Storage device detected #/dev contents ata@ata-HP-ProBook-6470b:~$ ls /dev/sdb* /dev/sdb /dev/sdb1 #Thunar gives this error message when unmounting: "Error opening /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1a.0/usb1/1-1/1-1.2/remove: No such file or directory." #Nothing new in dmesg #/dev contents ata@ata-HP-ProBook-6470b:~$ ls /dev/sdb* /dev/sdb -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/792085 Title: Automatic remount of safely removed drive To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/792085/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
