[Bug 1535840] Re: systemd ignoring /etc/modules due to blacklist

2021-07-31 Thread Filippo Argiolas
Any news about this? it seems all watchdog modules are blacklisted
unless the watchdog daemon is installed and one module is enabled in
/etc/default/watchdog. With basic watchdog functionality already enabled
in systemd shouldn't this be changed to support it?

With your ppa fractional scaling works again (I'm almost sure it worked fine in

[Bug 571678] Re: No plymouth graphical boot on Intel GPU

2010-09-19 Thread Filippo Argiolas
Affected too, i915 after the upgrade from 9.10, no plymouth in the initrd, no
splash at bootup nor at shutdown.
Reinstalling plymouth doesn't work, update-alternatives --auto default.plymouth
says there is no default.plymouth.

Before trying the FRAMEBUFFER=y thing, is that workaround supposed to
work? it seems that the issue is not in mode setting or framebuffer,
it's plymouth that's not getting loaded at all. Mode is set correctly
and there is a nice fading thing from white on black text to gdm with no
mode change.

[Bug 565058] Re: Lucid: hotplugging Huawei E220 doesn't load 'option' module

2010-09-19 Thread Filippo Argiolas
Just for the sake of completeness, I have this very same dongle and
networkmanager doesn't seem to see it neither in 9.10 nor 10.04 but the same
dongle works flawlessly on Fedora 13.
So the issue is not in the firmware, it's either in some ubuntu specific patch
or some (mis)configuration (well fedora could also have some downstream patch
that fixes the same issue too).

[Bug 542091] Re: Add apport hook for cheese

2010-03-21 Thread Filippo Argiolas
Ok, don't worry. Now that I think about it I'm not sure it makes so much
sense to create a debug log file as we did. Enabling GST_DEBUG can
really slow down the whole execution, writing all that stuff to a file
would be even worse. I think I'll completely get rid of that log file.

The nice thing with that hook with bugbuddy was that you would get the
debug stuff included in the stacktrace if cheese crashed. I really doubt
that's possible with apport unless you change cheese to always start
with debug enabled.

[Bug 378211] Re: cheese resolution problem with microdia webcam

2009-11-26 Thread Filippo Argiolas
I'm not sure about what difference do you see between simply probing for valid
resolutions and retrieving a list from the driver.
Cheese simply asks for supported pixel formats and the v4l-info output you
posted just proves it's right. The strange 464x464 resolution comes directly
from you driver. If the webcam supports a different set of pixelformats then
report the bug to your driver developers.
By the way, why are you using the sn9c102 driver? your webcam is supported
upstream by gspca drivers as far as I know...
there is a good chance that fixing your issue is just a matter of using the
right driver.

[Bug 252664] Re: Cheese: choppy refresh

2009-06-14 Thread Filippo Argiolas
I don't believe the feature requested here will happen anytime soon. Photos are
saved directly from the same stream of the viewfinder, a frame is taken and
encoded into a jpeg file. To do what the OP suggested we will need to stop the
pipeline, close the device, reopen it with an higher resolution, take a frame,
stop the pipeline again and reopen it with the lower resolution.
It will take no less than 3-6 seconds just to shoot a photo. I'd say it's a
wontfix.

About refresh issues I believe Neil is talking about some issue we had
in the past with gtk double buffering, they should be fixed in git or in
the 2.27.3 release expected in the next few days.

dma_alloc_coherent so we still get the warning!

I'm currently discussing with gnome accessibility experts to try to nail down
this issue. It is definetely confirmed that it only happens if a11y is enabled.
There is probably some locking issue with gdk threads.
Anyway, why the upstream tracker is set to Incomplete? the bug is marked as NEW
in gnome bugzilla (afaik it's the same as Confirmed in Launchpad), a LP bug?

I believe Ubuntu Hardy shipped with Dell Mini 9 is also affected by this bug

I confirm the bug, it seems to happen with metacity themes that change their

[Bug 309039] Re: SRU for cheese 2.24.2

2009-01-04 Thread Filippo Argiolas
Hi Martin, I'm a Cheese developer.
I think the important bug Loic did talk about was the one about webcams
supporting just one resolution not working properly. The other modifications
are just minor leak fixes.

I explicitly asked Loic to open this SRU for the improved debug information
about the webcam devices.
Particularly the commit about Vendor and Product Id is the one I care most.
As you probably know with 2.6.27 kernel series (so, with Ubuntu Intrepid) v4l
decoding stuff has been moved from kernel to a userspace library, libv4l. Many
webcam drivers that were developed out of mainstream have been included in
mainline kernel. New code means new bugs at driver level that most of users
just see as Cheese bugs. So, we received, and still receive a lot of bug
reports about webcams devices not working anymore with Cheese. That patch would
greatly speed up bug triaging because we wouldn't have to ask questions like
Which webcam do you have? or Which driver does it uses?.
Since a great part of our userbase use Ubuntu Intrepid it would be great to
have at least that patch included.
Regarding the other commits, I don't really think it's so much code, just
normal bugfixes that we considered unharmful enough for 2.24 series. (By the
way, I thought GNOME 2.24.x series had some kind of fast path with SRUs, isn't
it?)
Thank you for looking at this,
Filippo

[Bug 308890] Re: SRU for libv4l 0.5.7

2009-01-02 Thread Filippo Argiolas
Hi, I'm a Cheese developer,
Recently we had several (I'd say one per week, but sometimes even more) bug
reports on bugzilla.gnome.org from Ubuntu Intrepid users all more or less
caused by libv4l 0.5.6.
All users reported Cheese working again after upgrading to 0.5.7 from Loic's
PPA (and, of course, upgrading kernel from proposed but that's another bug).

So, did anyone already look into this? Is there a way to speed up the
SRU process? After all you just approved an SRU from 0.5.0 to 0.5.6... I
don't think pushing it a little further would cause any damage (indeed
it will at least make uvcvideo webcams work again with cheese).

Just as a reference consider taking a look at
http://freshmeat.net/redir/libv4l/76006/url_changelog/marc.info where the
author strongly suggests an upgrade (every one is urged to
upgrade to 0.5.7 asap!)

Thank you,
Filippo

2008-12-19 Thread Filippo Argiolas
@everybody:

Please also note that libv4l 0.5.6 has got a nasty bug that prevents uvcvideo
webcams to correctly work.
So the kernel alone is not enough to make Cheese work again.
The new libv4l 0.5.7, with the fix, already went through a SRU and should enter
intrepid-proposed soon (if it didn't yet) (see bug #308890).

So, please, be sure to have an updated libv4l before to comment about

[Bug 293837] Re: [Regression] Cheese stops when I try to record a video

2008-11-21 Thread Filippo Argiolas
Hi, I'm a cheese developer, I really believe this is a duplicate of bug 290506.
I didn't find though any information about your laptop, can you confirm that
your webcam uses uvcvideo driver? Could you attach here the output from lsusb
and dmesg?

[Bug 275082] Re: no debug symbols package in intrepid

2008-11-20 Thread Filippo Argiolas
Jose, no it doesn't work by following the wiki. The method you posted is under
the statement Use this section if you are using an Ubuntu version prior to
Gusty 7.10. , so that guide supposes that intrepid should have debug symbols.
Anyway I already rebuilt the library from source, debugged my issue (see bug
237156), and found a solution. But this bug still stands since this library
still doesn't have debug symbols package. Furthermore it had it in the past and
I cannot see any reason for having been removed.

Note also that bug 237156 is quite widespread, it causes crashes randomly with
almost every software.
I've seen at least 6 people from different projects complaining about that
segfault and having bad time trying to debug it without a symbol package.

2008-11-12 Thread Filippo Argiolas
I talked about this issue with the uvcvideo maintainer. It seems it is
strictly connected with gstreamer's v4l2src switch to libv4l2. Anyway he
came up with a patch that fixes it, or at least fixes mine. He will
commit it to his branch on linuxtv.org soon, I'll keep you updated.

zoomy942,
Sure I didn't post it here because I was waiting for him to commit it.
The changeset is: http://linuxtv.org/hg/~pinchartl/uvcvideo/rev/62c88b326ecd

Could any of you give it a test to see if it fixes your issue too?
You can get the source running hg clone

Anyway, what is the quickest way to get this patch included into ubuntu

2008-11-12 Thread Filippo Argiolas
zoomy, see the big fat warning printed when you run make? svn repository
is deprecated. If you want to give some help you should really try the
mercurial repository I pointed you a couple of hours ago
(http://linuxtv.org/hg/~pinchartl/uvcvideo). Anyway notice that it
contains the whole v4l-dvb stack and I wouldn't suggest to a newcomer to
compile it.

If you still want help trying the patch do it in a test environment, you just
have to run hg clone http://linuxtv.org/hg/~pinchartl/uvcvideo, make, sudo make
install.
Probably it will install the driver on a different place than the ubuntu one
and you will have to manually remove the latter.

If you cannot manage to compile it or you experience any error please
ask for help on irc or ubuntuforums. This bug is already overloaded, if
we want it to be solved I'd suggest to add here only comments that can
be useful for a solution.

So, again, could you guys give a try to the updated driver in Laurent's
branch?

[Bug 290506] Re: cheese doesn't show v4l2 video output and disables output on gstreamer-based apps ran afterwards

2008-11-10 Thread Filippo Argiolas
It may be the case that Cheese makes correct use of the API, in a way most
other applications don't use the API, and that uvcvideo breaks when used
 this way.

The API? which api are you talking about? the v4l2 api? we just do *one* ioctl,
it's a very basic and simple one and it's already been verified it's not the
guilty one.
Anyway cheese works with every other webcam driver out there and doesn't have
this issue with prior versions of uvcvideo. Is it that hard to understand that
something there has changed and it's causing this bug?

I can reproduce the very same bug with gstreamer alone, so it's clearly not a
cheese issue. Others reported the bug with gstreamer alone too. I don't know
how Kopete works but I cannot see anyone here who said the issue doesn't stand
with it.
Regarding skype, please stop enumerating it.. it's closed source, how could be
useful to know it works? Does it use v4l1 api? does it use libv4l? what
resolution does it set?

[Bug 290506] Re: cheese doesn't show v4l2 video output and disables output on gstreamer-based apps ran afterwards

2008-11-10 Thread Filippo Argiolas
Francisco, as I said previously (not sure if it was here), I'm not upset
with you or with anyone at all. It's just that lately I hear so many
people complaining that cheese doesn't work, I even read some rather
expert guy in the forums saying to newbies things like cheese is
completely broken in intrepid.

Cheese is just a software that gives you the webcam images, but there is some
sort of toolchain to make it work: we use gstreamer, gstreamer uses the
video4linux api to access the device, the video4linux api interacts with your
particular webcam driver.
So if something is broken in this chain users always see Cheese as broken and
report us it doesn't work. But there is some great chance that cheese is not
failing but something at a lower level is.
Since most of the late issues appeared with intrepid switching to 2.27 kernel
and many development went on recently in webcam drivers the chance of some
regression at kernel level is someway increased.
I'm still not sure if gstreamer is involved too, but it seems it's really an
uvcvideo specific issue, so, maybe, they could be both related.

Perhaps, just perhaps, it is a different issue?
I don't think so, maybe there are different ways to reproduce it but all end up
with the webcam locked in the same way.

I have to tell you that I have yet to succeed locking my camera using
gstreamer. As I mentioned above, there seems to be quite a number of people
in this list able to use gstreamer and who are unable to use cheese. It
would be nice if you would reckon that these reports were also made.

Did you try all the different resolutions supported by your webcam with
gst-launch?
There is an easy way to get a better idea about who's causing the bug:
Could any of you test cheese with a 2.26 kernel?

FWIW, considering your email address, I have to assume you are a Gnome dev,
and thus Cheese developer. If you are, I would like to thank you for working
on Cheese. It is a lovely application, and I was delighted when I found it.

Yes, I'm a Cheese developer, thank you :). Again, I'm sorry if I
appeared upset (consider also that English is not my motherlanguage :P).

[Bug 290506] Re: cheese doesn't show v4l2 video output and disables output on gstreamer-based apps ran afterwards

2008-11-09 Thread Filippo Argiolas
zoomy942, the relevant part of that thread (the one about uvcvideo driver)
suggests to install latest trunk from uvcvideo svn.
That's the latest version before uvcvideo was included in mainline kernel
(2.27) and probably the same (or almost the same) one included in Hardy.

If it fixes the issue it's just one more evidence that Cheese is not involved
at all with this thing and it is a driver/kernel fault only.
There were many changes in webcam drivers with 2.27 kernels, it is likely that
some regression went in too.

[Bug 290506] Re: cheese doesn't show v4l2 video output and disables output on gstreamer-based apps ran afterwards

2008-11-05 Thread Filippo Argiolas
Andres, as I said in bugzilla I was wrong about libv4l.. I don't know
what made me believe that patch fixed the issue (it was late and I was
really tired) but, unfortunately, it doesn't.

Also please forgive me if I appeared rude with you, I didn't want it,
it's just that lately too much people says cheese doesn't work with
intrepid but it's just that many changes went in webcam drivers with
2.27 so some regression went in too and we have no power on it.

Anyway it seems like it's not a cheese issue at all. I have the issue
and can reproduce it only if I use the webcam at maximum resolution both
with cheese and gst-launch.

gst-launch-0.10 v4l2src ! video/x-raw-yuv, width=640, height=480 ! xvimagesink
Works perfectly, it can be run many times with no issue.

gst-launch-0.10 v4l2src ! video/x-raw-yuv, width=1280, height=1024 ! xvimagesink
Locks and the webcam doesn't work anymore without reloading uvcvideo.

Could any of you confirm this? I'm going to report it to the uvcvideo
developer.

2008-11-04 Thread Filippo Argiolas
@Valerio,

reported the very same issue (see duplicates of this bug).
I don't know why it still works with vlc (someone said it works with camorama
too but I think it's using v4l1 api) but it's likely that this issue comes from
a kernel regression with pwc driver.. I took a quick look at changelogs but I

[Bug 290506] Re: cheese doesn't show v4l2 video output and disables output on gstreamer-based apps ran afterwards

2008-11-02 Thread Filippo Argiolas
Andres, cheese asking hal for v4l capable devices has absolutely no
relation with this bug. Please don't blame us if you don't know what you
are talking about.

We just use gstreamer to access the webcam device.
The only thing we do on our own (directly accessing the device) is a
VIDIOC_QUERYCAP ioctl to see if the webcam is a v4l2 or a v4l one.
I really doubt that could cause such a behavior and if so that would be still
an uvcvideo issue.
Anyway why don't you guys report bugs to the proper place? If you want cheese
developers to be aware of cheese issues please report them to bugzilla.gnome.org

[Bug 282473] Re: cheese doesn't work with my webcam (Philips PCVC740K ToUcam Pro)

2008-10-20 Thread Filippo Argiolas
I don't think the point here is if it works good with gstreamer+v4lsrc.

As Baptiste said in the upstream bug report the webcam works with right
colors using v4lsrc (v4l1) from gstreamer properties but it's tinted
green using it as a v4l2 device. So the bug is the v4l2 green tint,
forcing it to use v4l would workaround the issue but wouldn't solve it.

Anyway cheese uses hal to detect v4l devices (looking for the ones
exposing video4linux capability), then it does a VIDIOC_QUERYCAP ioctl
to find if the device is a v4l2 one, if it fails it does another ioctl
(VIDIOCGCAP) to find if it supports v4l1. So if the device supports both
(not sure how libv4l works) v4l2 is always preferred and there is no way
to force v4l1 at the moment.

[Bug 237156] Re: SETRANS + libavg = SIGSEGV on Hardy

2008-10-01 Thread Filippo Argiolas
I confirm that this issue has nothing to do with libavg, I'm experiencing it
with gst-inspect too.
The sigsegv happens in fini_contex_translations function (setrans_client.c)
because it free a couple of uninitialized contexts.
Mike's patch doesn't seem to solve the issue here (current intrepid) though, it
makes it crash on init function.. Removing __thread keywords from contexts
initialization seems to do the trick but I doubt it's the right fix.
Is there an upstream tracker to report the issue?
