[Bug 1753062] [NEW] ubuntu bionic beaver dev branch - disappearing mouse cursor, after few secs, when using a usb mouse on dell xps 13 9333

2018-03-03 Thread Filippo Neri
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu Bionic Beaver (development branch)
Release:18.04

since upgrading from ubuntu 16.10 to 18.04 (dev branch),
the mouse cursor disappears after a few secs when using an external usb mouse
on a dell xps 13 9333
The notebook also has a touchpad which appears to work correctly.
I can manage to make visible again the mouse cursor by touching the touchpad.
But again if I start using the external mouse after a few secs 60 secs the
mouse cursor disappears again.
This is happening constantly does making difficult to use the external mouse.

Thanks for you attention.
Best regards,
Filippo

[Bug 568779] Re: [i855] 10.04 rc boots into black/blank screen

2010-04-30 Thread Filippo neri
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 541511 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541511

My advice to users with the Intel I855 graphics chipset is NOT to even try
Ubuntu 10.04 lucid,
but to wait until a fix is released. (After all, Karmic is supported for six
more months, Hardy for
one more year.)

If you still really want to try 10.04, I suggest using the alternate,
text-based installer. This
will allow you to install the system without problems. When the time comes to
reboot
form the HD, THEN hold the shift key, get into the grub menu and select
recovery mode.

Incidentally, I did exactly this on my Thinkpad X40. I am now running
2.6.34-020634rc6.
I am retired, so I have time to waste!

[Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)

2010-04-29 Thread Filippo neri
My situation:
System: Thinkpad X40 Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.40GHz
Memory: 1.5 GiB, Intel 855GM Chipset
Ubuntu Release 10.04(lucid) installed from the beta2 CD and updated to the
latest packages
(including lucid-proposed and lucid-backports.)
I have installed the following kernels:
2.6.32-19-generic
2.6.32-21-generic
2.6.32-22-generic
2.6.34-020634rc5-generic
(I upgraded to 2.6.32-22-generic today. )
Results (VERY repeatable!)
2.6.32-19-generic → OK
2.6.32-21-generic → Black screen
2.6.32-22-generic → Black screen
2.6.34-020634rc5-generic → OK
By OK I mean everything seems to work fine, and I can use the “Normal” Visual
Effects setting.

fili...@x40:~$ uname -a

Linux X40 2.6.34-020634rc5-generic #020634rc5 SMP Tue Apr 20 10:07:04

As far as I am concerned, this is a kernel bug introduced between 2.6.32-19
and 2.6.32-21,
but unfortunately, still present in 2.6.32-22. I have the choice of using
2.6.32-19, but I
will use 2.6.34-020634rc5 for the next few weeks to see if any problem arises.

[Bug 568779] Re: 10.04 rc livecd boots into black/blank screen (intel 82852/855GM graphic card)

2010-04-28 Thread Filippo neri
One day to go. It is unthinkable, but this bug WILL be included in the
final Lucid release. This is a disaster as machines using the Intel
855GM integrated video are quite common. My Thinkpad X40 is an example:
a still useful netbook alternative, with a nice and very readable matte
screen. I guess it will be possible to start in recovery mode, run in
failsafeX and then maybe try the 2.6.34-020634rc5-generic kernel. But
how many users can do that? Is Ubuntu Linux just for geeks?

[Bug 568653] [NEW] Live 10.04 RC on Thinkpad X40: Blank screen!

10.04 beta 2 worked OK on a thinkpad X40, until I updated the kernel. Then it

I am using a different system, because the X40 is not functional.
