Frank McCormick, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development

No longer an issue. This bug can be closed.

I dunno about Hardy, but the Intrepid version does exactly the same
thing. Aren't there enough CD writers around anyway?

[Bug 66034] Re: Cannot run gdmsetup

2006-12-25 Thread Frank McCormick
Tried going back to S13 for gdmand the old problem came back, long
delays before the desktop comes up and gdmsetup can't run. Spash screen
reverts to default as well.

Back to S21 and everything is normal.

Something between S13 and S20 has to run before GDM, and why is there no
socket when GDM runs earlier ?

2006-12-24 Thread Frank McCormick
Never did try to figure it out. I changed S13gdm to S21gdm and it
worked well, so obviously something in between has to run first ?

[Bug 66034] Re: Cannot run gdmsetup

2006-12-24 Thread Frank McCormick
Well I am happy with the workaround but it bugs me why the problem
only seemed to affect 3 or 4 people. Looking at the init scripts for
Dapper and Edgy, I did notice that dbus runs from an s20 script in Edgy,
while it is s12 in Dapper. GDM runs with s13 in both cases ( except as I
changed it to s21 to allow gdmsetup to run). Maybe dbus has to run
before gdm ???

Works for me. Simple solution to what seemed a complex problem,

My mistake, I'd mystyped s21gdm instead of S21gdm. It now works
(though it seems like it takes more to open gdm, probably because it
does). Maybe some other initscript can be moved after it? I attach my
(modified) setup for /etc/rc2.d as a text file.

I looked in /tmp and there is no socket with gdm in the name. I have
attached syslog with debug turned on. I don't use either NFS or NIS.

I have since realized that this is not a Firefox problem, it's an XORG
problem. The static lines appear when scrolling most applications. Maybe
just the mga driver ?

[Bug 66034] Cannot run gdmsetup

2006-10-13 Thread Frank McCormick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Running GDMSETUP on my machine (latest EDGY) gives me a series of
cannot connect to socket then says cannot access GDM configuration
file.

This started a few weeks ago.

[Bug 62342] Re: gdmgreeter Failed to connect to socket

2006-10-09 Thread Frank McCormick
This all looks so familar. The gdmgreeter not connecting, and in my case
gdmsetup also emulates the greeter and won't /can't connect. Nobody
seems to know what's wrong. I have aklso lost the halt/reboot
icons/functions from the quit command on the menu (I am running EDGY)

Last night after the latest update which included GDM, everything went
back to normaluntil I rebooted. And we are back at square one.

Yes. Nothing - no splash but no Xserver errors either. I have other problems
now caused by BUM which I think shoud be taken out of the repositories. I don't
think its compatible
with upstart.

[Bug 61582] Re: Crash on tag editing

2006-09-21 Thread Frank McCormick
Actually it's a two part crash which is random. I click on properties,
an error box pops up saying Gstreamer has suffered an internal error,
click on OK, properties box comes up, click on close and Rythmbox
crashes. Seems to happen at random times, I can change tags on a few
files, then it will crash. Wish I could provide more help.

[Bug 59933] Edgy (knot-2) puts two icons on screen for mounted partition

2006-09-11 Thread Frank McCormick
Public bug reported:

I have 2 icons on the screen for hda3...my dapper partition which Edgy mounts
on boot, One is called hda3, the other hda3(2). This all comes after the
installer insisted my hd was a scsi drive when it's really an IDE. That has
apparently been resolved by the Kernel people.
