[Bug 996791] Re: Xubuntu 12.04 extremely slow login

2013-02-28 Thread Frederik Himpe
This patch (and the packages including this patch) work around the slow
log in, but introduce a serious regression: the first time lightdm is
started after boot, the Shutdown menu in lightdm is empty.

We reverted to the lightdm package in ubuntu and rebuilt the
accountsservice package from 12.10 on 12.04. Now the problem is fixed
and this regression does not happen.

(It's indeed deceiving that such a common and well analayzed bug is
being ignored for almost a year. We are currently using Xubuntu on all
our systems in students' class rooms. The fact that such highly annoying
and common bugs are totally ignored, is making us think to switch
another distro).

[Bug 1121193] [NEW] Silently fails to restart shutdown without message when user logged in on virtual console

2013-02-10 Thread Frederik Himpe
Public bug reported:

When a user is logged in on a virtual console (tty1), then choosing
restart or shutdown in lightdm greeter does not restart or shut down the
system. I would expect a message to be shown stating that
restart/shutdown is not allowed because a user is logged in on tty1.

[Bug 1120704] [NEW] Xubuntu does not open OpenDocument and MSOffice files in LibreOffice if installed

2013-02-09 Thread Frederik Himpe
Public bug reported:

By default Xubuntu opens all OpenDocument MS Office and other word
processing and spreadsheet files in Abiword and Gnumeric. That's fine on
a default installation where only Abiword and Gnumeric are installed.

However when the user installs LibreOffice, these files are still being
opened by Abiword and Gnumeric. This leads to the strange situation that
if you save a text document in LibreOffice in its default OpenDocument
format, and you double click on the file in XFCE later on to continue
working, the file is opened in Abiword, causing loss of formatting. At
least OpenDocument should be opened by LibreOffice if it's installed, as
OpenDocument is a first class citizin in LibreOffice, while it's not in
Abiword and Gnumeric. As LibreOffice also has excellent support for MS
Office file formats and others, these should be assigned to LibreOffice
too.

I attach a patch to /usr/share/xubuntu/applications/defaults.list which
changes most formats to LibreOffice if the user installed it. On a
default installation, nothing changes and Abiword and Gnumeric are still
default.

[Bug 1016617] Re: Dell c6220 Unable to Reboot

2012-09-19 Thread Frederik Himpe
Confirmed: nox2apic does not have any effect here. Also there's no
option to disable x2apic in the bios.

nolapic works, but then Linux only sees a single core, so that's not
acceptable.

Clients which are heavily using the NFS server, also show this error:

Sep 13 13:13:46 node001 kernel: [ 7970.099157] NFS:
nfs4_reclaim_open_state: Lock reclaim failed!

After some time, the server became in an out of memory situation and all
processes where killed one by one, requiring a hard reboot. I am not 100% sure
it is caused by this NFS problem, but I have very strong suspicions it does,
because nothing memory was running on that system and it has 64 GB of RAM and
32 GB of swap space.

[Bug 1035216] Re: kworker and power_saving processes stuck in D state

2012-08-10 Thread Frederik Himpe
Upstream bug report: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42981
Patch: https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/1133941/

Seems like the patch finally went in 3.5-rc5 and 3.2.22:
https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.0/ChangeLog-3.2.22

So I guess this should be fixed with the latest kernel which went into
precise-updates. I will let you know if this problem would still be
occuring anyway.

present in the gosa packages in Ubuntu 12.04.

[Bug 59616] Re: keyboard not working after logging in via gdm

2007-04-13 Thread Frederik Himpe
I experienced two times the same problem already on my Apple Powerbook.
I could solve it by removing ~/.gconf in my user account, so I do think
it's a gnome problem somewhere.
