[Bug 1687191] Re: psmouse broken for thinkpad touchpad on carbon x1 5th gen

2017-06-28 Thread Fredrik Wendt
@Anders: No, my problem is different from yours: both trackpoint and
touchpad is unusable. Some users claim this is fixed in psmouse Linux
kernel module psmouse, from version 4.0.12-rc4. My only workaround is to
use IMPS protocol, which works predictably (stable) with the drawback of
all multiple touchpoints (two finger scroll, for instance) not being
useable.

[Bug 1522675] Re: Warning messages about unsandboxed downloads

The same (or very similar) privilege issue comes into play when
downloading sources _as root_ under /root, such as with the command
'apt-get source linux-image-extra-4.10.0-19-generic'.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1522675 ***

I ran into this bug as well, as I tried to build a new Linux kernel as
root. Downloading the sources as a regular user worked though.

apt-get source linux-image-extra-4.10.0-19-generic

W: Download is performed unsandboxed as root as file
'linux_4.10.0-21.23.dsc' couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'. -

[Bug 1687191] [NEW] psmouse broken for thinkpad touchpad on carbon x1 5th gen

2017-04-29 Thread Fredrik Wendt
Public bug reported:

On my Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th Gen with Swedish keyboard, the
trackpoint and touchpad is defunct when running 16.04 LTS and 17.04 "out
of the box". You're essentially required to attach an external USB
connected mouse to complete (UI based) installation.

Workaround: I can get the trackpoint (red dot) and touchpad to work with
IMPS protocol. When loading the `psmouse` Linux kernel module, passing
arguments `protocol=imps`, clicks and moving the mouse around works.
Using the middle button for scrolling works - both by moving the
trackpoint, and by using the touchpad.

However, this disables two-finger scrolling using the touchpad.

I also own a X1 Carbon 3rd Gen which works just fine.

[Bug 1428952] [NEW] strings in UI incorrectly displayed with lots of spacing

2015-03-05 Thread Fredrik Wendt
Public bug reported:

I'm on a ThinkPad X1 Carbon 3rd gen and I've installed Ubuntu 14.10
using the whole disk. Initially after install, everything was just fine,
but after running 'aptitude upgrade -y', menu items and strings in UI
(button labels, labels, ...) are incorrectly displayed.

The attached image is a screenshot of the select file dialog, opened
while reporting this bug. In the left pane, the text for the selected
entry should read Bilder, and the third entry from the top should say
ceda. In the list of files, the bottom entry should say x1-x11-issue-
02b.png' (and date columns should say 'tisdag').

As I move the mouse over the left pane (folder/favorite selection), the
bottom line changes back and forth between the correct Hämtningar and
incorrect Hämtninga. A similar pattern goes for the Open button: you
can see that the text right now is Öppna but the p characters are
drawn with different color. Once hovering over the button, it's drawn
correctly.

Things I'd like to try:
* use older video driver - but I don't know how to do that
* use Xfce

[Bug 1278569] Re: ibus breaks emacs and eclipse control-space keybinding

2014-06-26 Thread Fredrik Wendt
I'm looking for an automated way to either disable ibus, or change the
mapping (or remove it). All our developer vagrant images are based on
lubuntu 14.04 (and have emacs and eclipse installed). This is the last
single thing we haven't found a way to fix yet.

[Bug 992411] Re: network-manager: Please don't Depend on dnsmasq-base

This is a very unfortunate security issue, and a slow down of name
resolution in the case of VPN tunnels. I'd propose that the importance
be set to High.

image-3.12.0-031200rc4-generic_3.12.0-031200rc4.201310080738_amd64.deb

use this one as the wifi driver doesn't build/compile against this
kernel.)

Any other kernel I should test or work with in order to see what can be
done?

[Bug 1239074] [NEW] [MacBookAir5, 2] mini DP-to-VGA adapter not recognized

2013-10-12 Thread Fredrik Wendt
Public bug reported:

This is a regression from 12.10 where this adapter worked without any
problems. The effect of this bug is that you can't use MacBookAir
machines and use any display device with VGA. (Bad publicity to have to
boot into Mac OS X to show a presentation about how good Ubuntu is, and
why you'd want to switch ...)

This bug is as similar to Bug #1222734 - the difference (as far as I can
tell) is the MacBookAir version (5,1 - 5,2).

I have a MacBook Air 5,2 and was too hit by this unpleasant surprise

[Bug 1208858] [NEW] vpn submenu empty in network manager menu

2013-08-06 Thread Fredrik Wendt
Public bug reported:

I've been using a OpenVPN connection for the past three-four days and
I've got it setup with the GUI in network-manager-openvpn (-gnome
package involved I guess?) and it works well most of the time. However,
when the network connection is lost the VPN connection is not brought up
back with the network connection (a separate wishlist kind of thing).
The problem I'm having is that the VPN Connections submenu *sometimes*
is completely empty. I'm not sure how to properly debug this or what to
look for after/when this happens, or how to turn on more verbose
logging.

I'm on a laptop (MacBook Air 5,2) with Ubuntu 13.04 (upgraded from
12.10). Trying to reproduce this, I've tried to disconnect power, close
lid and wait for the machine to suspend, then open the lid and let it
respawn. So far, I've not been able to reproduce the bug this way.

I'm updating libdbusmenu-gtk3-4 today, and hope this doesn't happen
again. But I would like to know what to look for or do, when this
happens the next time.

Both n-m-openvpn and n-m-openvpn-gnome are version 0.9.6.0-0ubuntu3.

[Bug 674138] Re: Global appmenu breaks sloppy focus

2012-05-10 Thread Fredrik Wendt
Unity with sloppy focus is severely broken - it breaks Eclipse popup-windows
(any RCP based product, not just the java IDE) - javadoc, Ctrl+O, Ctrl+F8,
Ctrl+3 - all broken if the mouse pointer is in the area the popup window will
appear. What happens is that the window appears but is instantly closed, giving
you no chance to provide input to that window (mouse or keyboard), nor read
anything.
Terribly annoying since the only viable solution is to enable click-to-focus.

[Bug 995494] [NEW] keyboard and mouse doesn't work after upgrade

2012-05-06 Thread Fredrik Wendt
Public bug reported:

My kid is running 12.04 and has been doing so without issues for some
time. This morning he updated his machine and afterwards keyboard
doesn't work in either grub, tty/console nor X.

I'm attaching the list of packages that was updated. My guess is
libdevmapper since grub is affected as well.

[Bug 804929] Re: Alt+middle click doesn't resize windows

2012-02-05 Thread Fredrik Wendt
I've just realized that I'm partially affected by this. USB/peripheral pointing
devices seems to work, but the middle mouse button on the touchpad on my
Thinkpad T410 doesn't behave like left and right mouse buttons when I look at
it in xev.
With left and right mouse buttons ButtonPress and ButtonRelease events
happens/are fired as the physical button is pressed/depressed.
With the middle mouse button I get both events at the same time (in right
order) UNLESS I do a long press which essentially swallows both events, making
xev sit there with nothing to report. Incredibly annoying.

ButtonRelease fired at the same time for short presses and simply
swallowed on long press). I've been on 10.04 for a long time and don't

[Bug 897131] Re: some mouse events are lost

2012-02-05 Thread Fredrik Wendt
I'd be happy trying to solve this if someone could lend a hand in pointing to
the software chain of getting the raw events converted to
ButtonPress/ButtonRelease and read up on the source code changes from 10.04 to
11.10 that caused this. A Stefan in Bug 880544 also sees this.
Three different lines of Thinkpads: T410, X220, R61.

[Bug 399803] Re: [Jaunty] regression: bluetooth headset playback quality - choppy every two-three minutes

2009-07-22 Thread Fredrik Wendt
I'm well aware of the range, that's not a problem. The problem is that
this setup worked perfectly from January until June, which is when I
went on vacation and installed 9.04. I did however not touch my home
directory - any .gnome/ directories or gconf settings you want me to
clear/check?

Is there anyway I could figure out where in the chain the problem lies?
Rhythmbox gstreamer alsa bluez radio headset.

I can try karmic, it'll take some time for me to find the hours to
install it (the SSD disk that came with the Aspire One isn't too fast on
writing).

I'll also try my older (bigger and better) bluetooth adapter. I'll also
try using wired headphones to make sure it runs without issues.

[Bug 399803] Re: [Jaunty] regression: bluetooth headset playback quality - choppy every two-three minutes

2009-07-21 Thread Fredrik Wendt
I start by pairing using the gnome toolbar applet.
I put the MAC address of my adapter in .asoundrc as outlined above.
I execute 'gconftool -t string -s /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/musicaudiosink
alsasink device=bluetooth' to get music to my headset.

I'm guessing pulseaudio isn't in that chain?

[Bug 199266] Re: [Hardy] Bluetooth-applet sees BT headset and pairs, does not show under audio

2009-07-15 Thread Fredrik Wendt
This is a workaround that I've been using for quite some time (since Ubuntu
8.04 at least):
Edit the .asoundrc file as described above. (Use hciconfig to get the MAC
address if you don't know it.)
Then run
   gconftool -t string -s /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/musicaudiosink
alsasink device=bluetooth
to get music sent to the bluetooth device. To switch back to whatever is the
default, run
   gconftool -t string -s /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/musicaudiosink
autoaudiosink

I can confirm this too (the regression). My better half uses this quite a lot
to save images of our kids and this regression is keeping us from updating her
laptop to Jaunty (will try the workaround now though).
We use two sets of Bluetooth adapters (I only have access to one where I'm now)
and SonyEricsson phone, primarily a W810i.

[Bug 399803] [NEW] [Jaunty] regression: bluetooth headset playback quality - choppy every two-three minutes

2009-07-15 Thread Fredrik Wendt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bluez

I've been using a SonyEricsson headset since Ubuntu 7.10 to play music at work
(from a ThinkPad T61) - it's been a great experience and a pleasure to listen
to music using that headset.
This christmas I got (myself actually) an Acer Aspire One 110A and installed
Ubuntu 8.10, plugged in a tiny bluetooth adapter, installed banshee and
rhythmbox, paired up and off I went. It worked great but with a shorter range
(failed to keep music playing while going to bathroom :)
However, I just recently updated to 9.04 and now playback has started to behave
really bad. What happens is that it sounds just like I'm out of range - it gets
choppy and after some time it fast forwards (skips frames) to get back in sync.

lsusb says:
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0a12:0001 Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd Bluetooth
Dongle (HCI mode)

Looking at /var/log/syslog this is what I get after doing a
/etc/init.d/bluetooth restart (I do that whenever I forget to turn
playback off when leaving my desk and return after a few minutes):

Just as I write this report and hit play above, I just got 1:17 minutes
of OK playback, but then it started chopping and at 1:37 it was back in
sync. I'm playing an ogg file that I've listened to (thousands of times
- last.fm can confirm this), so there's nothing wrong with the file.

}

I've run vmstat 1 in a console to see if there's something special
happening but I can't find any pattern from that.

I'm running the standard kernel, all packages updated. My /boot/grub/menu.lst
does include
# defoptions=enable_mtrr_cleanup mtrr_spare_reg_nr=1 quiet splash
which is related to MTRR registries bug(s) in kernel and intel.

I've reniced bluetoothd, pulseaudio and banshee to -10 (using htop) - no
change.

I'm out of ideas on what to try. I'm willing to try most ideas as I'm
getting crazy listening to people walk by in the corridor at the office

I can confirm that Shift+Alt+anything doesn't work with 8.04 (LTS). In my
everyday work this prevents me from using all refactor commands in Eclipse
(such as rename, shift-alt-r) and all quick execution (shift-alt-x, t to run
unit tests).
Alt+key works.
Shift+key works.
Ctrl+Shift+key works.

Installed version is 1.5.0-3+cvs20071006ubuntu0.1

Command used to connect is: rdesktop -k sv -g 1400x1050 -m -a 16 -z -x b -u
fwendt localhost
Window manager is meta-city (no compiz - DRI turned off to enabled Xinerama
with 2960 pixels wide (external monitor+laptop monitor)).

[Bug 304196] [NEW] computer freezes when X starts

2008-12-01 Thread Fredrik Wendt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Just installed xubuntu on a rather old Compaq Armada 110 (laptop) and it works
pretty well (with 512 MB RAM) except that when X starts, the computer kind of
stalls.
Kind of:
* display is turned off (backlight turned off)
* replies to ping
* caps lock led is turned on/off when caps lock key is pressed
* display won't turn back on after hitting Ctrl-Alt-Bkspc or -F1

This is my first installation of Ubuntu on this laptop (it used to run
Debian without X)

After reading
http://www.nabble.com/xorg.conf-for-Compaq-Armada-110-td18295187.html i applied
the same workaround:
Add «Driver vesa» to «Section Device» in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. That however
doesn't use the full 1024x768 resolution that the screen is capable of, but
only 800x600 (640x480 is displayed in Xfce's settings manager).

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)

The new -intel driver (the old one is -i810) has support for TV-out on

basically left with two options: using an old -i810 or buying a new TV.

[Bug 6270] Re: no support for TV-Out

2008-08-07 Thread Fredrik Wendt
Daniel: I'd say you are partly wrong since I have gotten black-and-white
working (see comment 23). I tested that on two different TVs with the
same result: -i810 gives colour and is all well, -intel was black-and-
white. I don't have the hardware any longer (got a new one changing jobs
which doesn't have TV-out) so I haven't been able to test for a while
and I'm sure things have moved quickly here.

@Emil Sit: According to XStrikeForce[0] xrandr1.2 can't handle good old multi
display setups (non-Xinerama style), which is very unfortunate and brings us
back to a Windows-alike level of usability again (where there's one desktop and
it spans all outputs - if you change the workspace of the right screen then the
left screen should not move).
Hopefully it will be possible to use xrandr+intel (not i810)+compiz with two
DISPLAYs (not two screens that are part of one virtual display) when xrandr 1.3
is released.

[Bug 172985] Re: LCD Brightness buttons do not work on ThinkPad R61/T61/X61

2008-04-07 Thread Fredrik Wendt
Ani: On my T61 the brightness always takes two steps, no matter if it's
up or down (brighter/darker).

[Bug 61184] Re: Screen brightness buttons don't work properly on Thinkpad Z61T

2008-03-25 Thread Fredrik Wendt
I had similar problems on my T61 (things worked under Gutsy but not with
Hardy alpha 6) - my actual bugs are bug #198476 or bug #172985.

[Bug 106843] Re: No sound - ATI Technologies Inc SB600 Azalia (Fixable!)

2007-11-07 Thread Fredrik Wendt
Downloaded alsa-driver source from alsa-project, compiled and installed
(hgcompile make install) and it now works with one bug which is
described elsewhere (the master volume is slowly increased to maximum
from whatever level you set it to, so we use PCM to control volume
level).

[Bug 6270] Re: no support for TV-Out

2007-10-27 Thread Fredrik Wendt
I'm running Gutsy final on a Thinkpad Z61t which is equipped with a
Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 03) (lspci -n says 8086:27a2 (and 8086:27a6 for
the Display Controller)). I get TV output but I've yet failed to get
color working.

[Bug 6270] Re: no support for TV-Out

TV works with colours if I run i810. With the same xorg.conf file
(except for the Driver instructions) using intel, the output is
black/white.
