[Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption

2013-04-01 Thread Gatlin Johnson
I'm willing to do it! I think it's worth asking, Pablo.

[Bug 296867] Re: empathy needs to support OTR encryption

2013-04-01 Thread Gatlin Johnson
I would love to jump in and tackle this: I'm a developer, I want to
switch to Empathy.

I know lots of developers work on things they care about in their free
time; I can't afford to do that right now. Without turning this into a
classified ad, I'll simply suggest that anyone interested in helping me
with this (or talking to me more! I like meeting people anyway) email me
via my profile.

Mods: if this is an inappropriate comment, I sincerely apologize and
will never do it again. I can make this happen if a lot of people help
me, and it seems there are a lot of people who care and use this forum
to stay up to date.

[Bug 742052] [NEW] Broken package in 11.04

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: haskell-platform

I am running Narwhal and as of now, attempting to install the haskell-

installed

[Bug 711366] Re: update to 2011.02

2011-03-21 Thread Gatlin Johnson
I know that ghc7, as part of supporting Haskell Prime, drops support for
certain syntax constructs. However, I think multiple haskell-platforms
could co-exist if some packages absolutely require the old platform.

[Bug 396309] Re: Use Rekonq in place of Arora as Kubuntu default web browser. [wishlist]

2010-03-08 Thread Gatlin Johnson
I'm using rekonq 0.3.0 right now and it's very fast, stable, and
functional. Konqueror is just not up to the task of rendering some more
modern pages. Rekonq is a native KDE app with a great rendering engine,
and it does just what it should - it renders web pages.

[Bug 496572] [NEW] Device not detected in Kubuntu

2009-12-14 Thread Gatlin Johnson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ifuse

This may not be the correct place to file, but I'll start here. I am
running Kubuntu 9.10, and after installing the iFuse package I am still
not able to run any of the mount commands successfully to mount the
phone. Under Ubuntu 9.10 the phone is auto-detected and mounted as a
mass storage device by gvfs, and while I did not expect KDE to automount
the phone, I did expect the command to work manually. The phone is a
jailbroken 3GS running firmware 3.0.1.

[Bug 374631] [NEW] Kubuntu, Xubuntu are named improperly

2009-05-10 Thread Gatlin Johnson
Public bug reported:

This is my first "bug" to contribute to Ubuntu, and in the spirit of bug
#1, I have noticed yet another nasty hindrance to FOSS adoption efforts:
nobody outside of tech enthusiasts really, truly cares about window
managers. Feel free to wonder where I get off being so demanding.

I have been using Kubuntu since 5.10, and each release has been an
excellent product that I believe lots of people would love to use
(similarly with Xubuntu). The only trouble is, disconcertingly often,
when I try to explain what the "K" in Kubuntu is really for, I have to
explain that there is a different desktop available than regular Ubuntu.
More often than not, this leads to confusion (as users of other, more
popular OSes do not have this freedom, and thus it's a strange idea), or
else it leads the person to think it's in some way inferior. You and I
know this isn't true.

I think this discrepancy with the names is hurting Linux marketshare. I
attend a leading CS university, and if anyone is running Linux, they are
running Ubuntu. When I show Kubuntu to people who didn't quite want
Gnome but didn't know there were alternatives, they are impressed and
wish they had heard of it before.

MY proposal is to name the three flapship desktop versions as follows:
Ubuntu, Ubuntu Advanced, and Ubuntu Lite. I realize there could be some
contention over renaming Kubuntu to Ubuntu Advanced, but my point
remains the same. We should still push Gnome as the default - it's
friendly, familiar, and has lots of love from outside organizations.
Totally cool.

But right now it's not "Gubuntu," it's Ubuntu. The version with KDE
should also be Ubuntu, and same for XFCE. We already have Ubuntu
Educational Edition, Ubuntu Server Edition, Ubuntu Studio, and Ubuntu
JeOS. This is less fragmenting from a marketing perspective, because
people will associate them all together. Honestly, I think Ubuntu Media
Center (or something less copycat :) would also be a good idea for
Mythbuntu. The names are descriptive, and don't imply any sort of
schism. This doesn't have to be a difficult change, and the projects
themselves don't need to change. Heck, even the packages can stay the
same.

Thoughts?
