[Bug 1863234] Re: Disabling bpf() syscall on kernel lockdown break apps when secure boot is on

2020-02-20 Thread Brendan Gregg
This change also prevents BPF security programs from running (like those
we use at Netflix) making Ubuntu less secure.

In case I'm not being clear enough: this is the worst change I've ever
seen in operating systems.

Some people want lockdown? Let them opt in.

[Bug 1863234] Re: Disabling bpf() syscall on kernel lockdown break apps when secure boot is on

2020-02-20 Thread Brendan Gregg
The relaxed BPF restrictions still break BPF tracing and other things,
making Ubuntu no longer meet the debugability requirements for an
enterprise OS.

Lockdown should not be enabled by default. It needs to be opt-in, not
opt-out.

Tyler -- please fix Ubuntu.

[Bug 1727035] Re: apps start maximized randomly

2017-11-07 Thread Gregg Weber
I see that this is by design, gnome project calls it "automaximize"
There are some people like me, complaining that we can no longer have
3/4 screen windows, gnome always maximizes them to full screen now.
The project does not seem to care too much.

[Bug 1727035] [NEW] apps start maximized randomly

2017-10-24 Thread Gregg Weber
Public bug reported:

Firefox, thunderbird, aisleriot, all start full screen randomly.
Sometimes they start at the correct size at last close.
To reproduce: open {aisleriot|firefox|thunderbird} change size to not full
screen.
Close {aisleriot|firefox|thunderbird}
Open {aisleriot|firefox|thunderbird}
Result: {aisleriot|firefox|thunderbird} is full screen
Expected result: {aisleriot|firefox|thunderbird} is same size as when closed.

Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem,
rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I'm marking this bug as Incomplete for now.

If indeed this is a local configuration problem, you can find pointers
to get help for this sort of problem here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community

Or if you believe that this is really a bug, then you may find it
helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem,
explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu rather than a problem
specific to your system, and then change the bug status back to New.

[Bug 1704683] [NEW] video corruption 17.04 i915 driver

2017-07-16 Thread Gregg Weber
Public bug reported:

When I start emacs (GUI) randomly the emacs window is animated with 60HZ snow,
speckles, and lines, including where the title bar should be.
If I interact with the window, by moving it or clicking in it, video returns to
normal, and works
perfectly from then on. Also, when resizing a gnome-terminal, the window gets
filled with snow and flashing lines off and on as the resizing is happening.
When I stop resizing, video looks perfect.
100% repeatable. Both of these issues are highly dynamic, a screen shot won't
show it. I could make a short
.mp4 video, if that would help.

Occurs on both systems I have installed onto.
System 1: 17.04 ASUS H87M-E motherboard, 8GB ram, Samsung 120GB SSD.
I tried 16.04 and had the same corruption.
System 2: 17.04 ASUS B150M-C motherboard, 8GB ram, Samsung 250GB SSD.

Seems somewhat similar to other bugs reported for nvidia and nouveau
drivers, but I am using i915.

[Bug 1629251] Re: Some app-indicators not showing menus

2017-03-29 Thread Matthew Gregg
Running up to date 17.04 and I also have this issue. In my user env
XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity is already set, but Electron based apps do not
show a tray/indicator icon. I attempted to set this in /etc/profile.d/
which worked and I had tray/indicator icons, but had the effect of
breaking various Unity things like the control/settings app. Seems like
apps launched from the gnome-session are missing this env?

I've switched to evolution-ews 3.22.3-0ubuntu1 from yakkety-proposed,
cleared my calendar cache and calendar entries appear to be recurring
correctly. Seems to be a good fix.

[Bug 1631095] Re: pushed dns servers not being used

2016-11-01 Thread Matthew Gregg
Not sure if I have the same issue, but I have hard set DNS servers in
the OpenVPN connection. On first connect it works and I can resolve
internal hosts, but if I reconnect the VPN connection, I can no longer
resolve until I restart the dnsmasq process. It will restart and I can
resolve hosts again.

[Bug 300662] Re: Virtualbox ignores CTRL key if "Show position of pointer when the Control key is pressed" option is enabled under Mouse preferences !

2016-09-10 Thread Gregg Coleshill
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 9441 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/9441

I have this same problem with Teamviewer (Ubuntu 16.04 host, any
client). I have tried selecting and de-selecting 'send remote key
combinations' to no noticeable effect.

I have also found that disabling 'show location of pointer' either through
gnome-tweak-tool or gconf via cli disables the ctrl key almost entirely in the
host OS,
ctrl-c (copy),
ctrl-v (paste),
ctrl-a (select all)
ctrl-s (save)
shift-ctrl-s (save as)
shift-ctrl-e (export)
for example, do not work in any application at all afaik

but oddly
shift-ctrl-up/down (switch workspace)
does work.

Re: [Bug 1518457] Re: kswapd0 100% CPU usage

2016-06-19 Thread Gregg King
Thank you so much Rasmus!

Your solution worked for me:
sudo touch /etc/udev/rules.d/40-vm-hotadd.rules
reboot

I could always trigger the CPU usage bug with this:
stress --cpu 8 --io 4 --vm 7 --vm-bytes 128M --vm-hang 3 --timeout 60s

If running it once didn't work, a second run would do it. Now I've run it
over and over and kswap hits 1-2% during the stress test and drops back
down as soon as it ends.

Like Rasmus says, it's an AWS instance which runs on Xen.

Re: [Bug 1518457] Re: kswapd0 100% CPU usage

2016-06-04 Thread Gregg King
I've had the issue mostly when running with no swap. I added 1GB swap
file and it fixed it on the machine with less memory usage, but the
machine with the database (using more memory most of the time) still has
the bug occur about once a day.

Ubuntu 16.04 for both, not happening on 14.04.

[Bug 1575274] Re: System Crash during 16.04 Upgrade from 14.04

2016-04-27 Thread Matthew Gregg
@MeadeBaron any chance this machine has an Nvidia card? Had a similar
issue on one of my hosts with Nvidia. I was able to boot into an older
kernel from the Grub boot menu and upgraded the Nvidia driver from 340
to 361. Then the 4.4.0-21 kernel(current as of this post), would boot.

[Bug 1540405] Re: i40e fails virtual networking

2016-02-17 Thread Mick Gregg
Joseph, thanks, we can talk to the customer about options to upgrade
kernels. Unfortunately, we can't use ksplice as this kernel is not seen
as LTS in that product.

Again, if there is any specific fix we think is likely to help, that
would be good to know about before trying to arrange downtime.

[Bug 1540405] Re: i40e fails virtual networking

2016-02-16 Thread Mick Gregg
Sorry. no, this didn't happen after an upgrade. These machines are not using
ksplice, so we have no auto-updating, and the kernel dates from the last full
redeployment:
Linux 4.2.0-22-generic #27-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 17 22:57:08 UTC 2015
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

These are trusty nodes using the above kernel to avoid bug 1497812.

This is a production customer cloud, so we don't have scope to upgrade a
machine just for testing, unfortunately. Is there a likely fix in the
upgrade you recommend?

As I say, so far we have not seen the issue since setting TSO to off.

[Bug 1540405] [NEW] i40e fails virtual networking

2016-02-01 Thread Mick Gregg
Public bug reported:

With linux-hwe-generic-trusty we see kern.log entries for "TX driver
issue detected, PF reset issued" on a NIC in a bond, followed by the
same interface going down and up again. After this time networking to
virtual machines bridged to that bond fails.

We see either asymmetric traffic, with ARP replies not reaching the VMs,
or no traffic at all to or from VMs.

In this context, these are nova-compute nodes using OpenvSwitch and KVM.

Reloading the i40e module corrects the networking.

Setting TCP Segmentation Offload off on the NICs seems to prevent the PF
reset, and we don't believe we have seen VM networking problems since
doing so.

[Bug 1497812] Re: i40e bug: non physical MAC outbound frames appear as copied back inbound (mirrored)

2015-10-15 Thread Mick Gregg
Using the @jsalisbury kernel from comment#7 (same site as @jjo
comment#8) I've just seen the issue reproduced, but after some hours of
stability.

We seen this similarly with i40e-1.2.48, in which cases the module had
to be reloaded (or the machine rebooted) to recover container
networking.

[Bug 587008] Re: Pulseaudio not properly shutdown on logout

2014-06-04 Thread Matthew Gregg
Looks like if you enable "load-module module-x11-xsmp" in
"/etc/pulse/default.pa" the daemon will properly shutdown at logout.
However, unity-greeter(lightdm) also tries to spawn pulseaudio and
doesn't have a session-manager attached which causes the daemon to
continually crash and respawn with "module.c: Failed to load module
"module-x11-xsmp" (argument: ""): initialization failed."

This is an upgrade from 13.10. See attached screenshot.

[Bug 1245474] Re: [regression] on login screen, monitor stays on forever

Workaround works for me as well, but seems to trump the "Turn off screen
when inactive" setting for my desktop session. I have that set for 10
minutes and immediate lock, but with this enabled it will blank the
screen at the scripts timeout and will not lock.

[Bug 1266695] Re: acroread always prints in grey ubuntu 13.10

2014-01-20 Thread Gregg Coleshill
I upgraded from 13.04 (where everything worked perfectly) to 13.10 and
am getting only first page printing from acroread, poor print quality
(grey/ dashed etc as OP) and also in documents with layers some layer
will not print at all. I am using an HP Deskjet 3050 wirelessly via
HPLIP. Printer works fine with Evince and any other application,
acroread printing was fine form the same machine under 13.04 and I have
another machine still on 13.04 using it with no issues.

Rodney D. In 13.10 how do I know a file I am looking at in Nautilus is

[Bug 993648] Re: libdigest-sha1-perl package is not in Ubuntu 12.04

Oh and for others, you could always install it with CPAN - but this goes
against the whole point of packages (since perl could update and you'll

[Bug 993648] Re: libdigest-sha1-perl package is not in Ubuntu 12.04

2012-11-06 Thread Paul Gregg
MailScanner is also affected (as is any 3rd party perl script that has
use Digest::SHA1; in it)

MailScanner recommend the installation of the debian package
http://www.mailscanner.info/ubuntu.html
but that is no longer possible because it fails out on the missing dep.

Using the manual deb from Gabriel in #9
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libdigest-
sha1-perl/+bug/993648/comments/9 does solve the dependency problem.

It strikes me as absurd that Ubuntu maintainers might suggest Digest::SHA is a
drop in replacement for Digest::SHA1 - it is not.
Are Ubuntu offering to do fix up all 3rd party code that uses
Digest::$type"->new ? (which needs ::SHA1 and doesn't work in ::SHA). The
common method would be Digest->new($type) but not all code out there uses that.

** Changed in: libdigest-sha1-perl (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1043043] Re: Prompts for both the user and group passwords even though group password has been saved

2012-10-24 Thread Matthew Gregg
Sorry for all the comments, but I just worked around the issue by
editing, /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/MY_CONNECTION and
setting:

[vpn]
ipsec-secret-type=save
IPSec secret-flags=0

and adding:

[vpn-secrets]
IPSec secret=MYSECRET

I am no longer prompted for anything other than the password when
connecting. So obviously we have an issue with NM reading just the group
password(IPSec secret) from the keyring.
