[Bug 1548051] [NEW] baloo takes up most of my CPU

2016-02-21 Thread Guenther Palfinger
Public bug reported:

Top reports about only 15 % (of 100%) idle and

%CPU of 400%
70  baloo_file_extr
15  baloo_file
10  each dolphin4, of which I have 8 running

~/.xsession-errors grew to 3.5 GB in about 15 hours

baloo_file_extractor used already 620 core CPU minutes.

Disabling baloo and killing the baloo_file_extractor process brought
things back to normal: 85% of 100% idle system and not growing
.xsession-errors, and dolphin4 instances do not use any CPU

[Bug 1508544] [NEW] wily: dolphin freezes on symlink to pipe

2015-10-21 Thread Guenther Palfinger
Public bug reported:

When entering a directory with a symbolic link to a pipe, dolphin
freezes on wily.

Reproduce by:
$ cd
$ mkdir freeze-dolphin
$ mkfifo /tmp/mypipe
$ ln -s /tmp/mypipe freeze-dolphin/link-to-pipe
$ dolphin & # click freeze-dolphin icon and try to go back

On my system the two symlinks .lyxpipe.in -> /tmp/kde-
XXX/kileQoFNxO/.lyxpipe.in and .lyxpipe.out -> /tmp/kde-
XXX/kileQoFNxO/.lyxpipe.out are permanently present in the home
directory leading to an unusable dolphin once show hidden file is
enabled.

Workaround:
 o use dolphin4

Page Up and Page Down keys (and the equivalent klick on the scroll bar)
work. So rendering is OK with Page Down, Page Up and scrolling up (as

I was using the lucid I had made a copy of, i.e. it was *not* fresh, but
upgraded every half a year since feisty. Unfortunately, it is gone now,
but the unusable lucid-maverick mixture is still on that partition. The
fresh maverick install worked fine and is already upgraded to natty.

[Bug 631963] Re: korganizer very slow with public holiday calendar

2011-04-30 Thread Guenther Palfinger
The problem did not disappear for me. It even worsened with the update
maverick - natty. Kontact and other windows started to misbehave and
crash twice.

The bug is triggered by the selection of Settings - Configure Calender -
Date and Time - Holiday. I tried US and German as Holiday region. Using
them causes a delay of 6 s for changing the month (in month view) and
occationally above behaviour. With (none) as holiday region changing
month takes 1s and the system is stable.

I am suggesting to reopen the bug.

[Bug 297976] Re: kmail: cannot sign emails after upgradind to intrepid ibex

2009-07-07 Thread Guenther Palfinger
I reconfirm the bug for KDE 4.3rc1, I installed with kdepim_4.2.95a-
0ubuntu1~jaunty~ppa1_all.deb under Jaunty from backports.

To make matters worse, the permanent workaround described in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdepim/+bug/297976/comments/5
does not work anymore. However, the temporary workaround still works.

[Bug 297976] Re: kmail: cannot sign emails after upgradind to intrepid ibex

2009-03-07 Thread Guenther Palfinger
I can confirm the bug with kde4.2.1 as provided by deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-experimental/ubuntu intrepid main in
/etc/apt/sources.list. I reacently upgraded for 8.04 to 8.10.

There are at least theses 2 bug reports, which seem to be related:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/262748
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/268951

Temporary workaround (see link in comment 3 and 4):
End kmail (or whatever is supposed to ask for the passphrase) and from a
console:
$ eval $(gpg-agent --daemon)
$ kmail

Permanent Workaround (untested):
Put $(gpg-agent --daemon) into /.kde/env/gpgagent.sh

In my humble opinion, all the bug reports, including this one, are
assigned to the wrong packages (kdepim, gnupg, enigmail). As nobody with
another desktop environment than KDE seems to have a problem (??), some
KDE-package (kdebase* or kdelibs*) might be more appropriate.

As the issue seems to be unsolved for more than 3 months and the bug
renders the system unusable for sending signed and reading encrypted
mails for a 'normal' user, being a regression from 8.04, one might
consider to change the importance of the bug.

[Bug 157050] Re: octave2.9-forge doesn't work in Gutsy!

Concerning 4. of my last post form 2008-03-22:

[Bug 157050] Re: octave2.9-forge doesn't work in Gutsy!

2008-03-22 Thread Guenther Palfinger
It seems clear from the above that the provided octave2.9-forge package
is built for a different API version then octave2.9, i.e. 22 instead of
24.

My solution for gutsy works OK, so far:

1. Add the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list
deb-src http://ch.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy main multiverse universe

2. Type in a shell the following 3 lines
 cd /usr/src
 sudo apt-get update
 sudo apt-get source -b octave2.9-forge octave2.9-forge

The last line starts the build of the package and generated the file
mentioned below. I had to install some build dependencies before it
could start. It took 20 minutes on my PC.

3. Type in a shell the following line to install (or rather upgrade) the
octave2.9-forge package:
 sudo dpkg -i octave2.9-forge_2006.07.09+dfsg1-8_i386.deb

4. Add the following 2 lines into /etc/octave2.9.conf or ~/.octaverc:
addpath (genpath
(/usr/lib/octave/site/oct/api-v24/i486-pc-linux-gnu/octave2.9-forge),
-begin);
addpath (genpath (/usr/share/octave/site), -begin);

With this, only 6 warning messages (warning: autoload: `' is not an
absolute file name) appeared instead of over 100. I tried imread and
imwrite and both worked fine.

I hope this will be fixed for hardy as octave2.9-forge does not work in
gutsy and might be considered a critical bug.

2007-10-25 Thread Guenther Palfinger
Me too, however with a different effect:

Konqueror uses far too big fonts and after reducing its font size
(pressing 3-5 times ctrl--) it is workable, but some contents is missing
and some links are not coloured as usual.

After downgrading (with dpkg -i ) from

/var/cache/apt/archives/kdelibs4c2a_4%3a3.5.8-0ubuntu3.1_i386.deb
to
/var/cache/apt/archives/kdelibs4c2a_4%3a3.5.8-0ubuntu2_i386.deb

everything is back to normal

[Bug 151978] evms broke the upgrade from feisty to gutsy

2007-10-12 Thread Guenther Palfinger
Public bug reported:

Booting the new kernel from gutsy resulted in about 8 times per second
the following lines on the console.

device-mapper: table: 254:6: linear: dm-linear: Device lookup failed
device-mapper: ioctl: error adding target to table

boot, home and other data partitions could not be mounted. The system
worked fine with the old feisty kernel.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.22/+bug/141435 reported similar problems.

Removing the not needed evms package solved the problem. I do not know
why I had it on my system in the first place.

[Bug 83748] Re: USB khubd oopsing when attaching usb-storage device

2007-06-21 Thread Guenther Palfinger
I can confirm the bug and the workaround (thanks to on rbiscosi) on
Linux gue704 2.6.20-16-386 #2 Thu Jun 7 20:16:13 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

I connected my external Freecom Classic HD twice:

1. Working: With the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/options (working fine):
options usb-storage delay_use=8

dmesg:
...

2. Buggy: After unmounting and disconnecting my HD, I commented out the above
mentioned line in /etc/modprobe.d/options and executed (as root):
# rmmod usb-storage

dmesg:

...

While the disk worked fine when there are 8 seconds, the 6 seconds are
not enough to spin up the device (see the first two lines in the dmegs
blocks).

Thereafter, rmmod usb-storage and all commands like lsusb run eternally
and cannot be interrupted by ctrl-C. Neither is another USB mass storage
device working. My hardware is a bit old so it only supports USB 1.1

[Bug 120389] (feisty) cdrom missing since 2.6.20-16 on 82801BA IDE U100 (ICH2) Intel chipset

2007-06-14 Thread Guenther Palfinger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

With kernel 2.6.17-11 (feisty works fine with it) the cdrom is
automounting OK.

On 2.6.20-16:
# mount /media/cdrom/
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb,
   missing codepage or other error
   (could this be the IDE device where you in fact use
   ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)
   In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
   dmesg | tail  or so

The according syslog lines:

Trevor Schauls, having the same lspci line, reported similar problems in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.20/+bug/117413 (comment 2,6,13,14) but as pointed out by
Sitsofe Wheeler (117413#8) most likely for a different reason,
suggesting to report a new bug.

# lsmod | grep piix # on 2.6.17-11-386
piix   10628  1
# lsmod | grep piix # on 2.6.20-16-386

Attaching full lspci -vv, lspci -vvn, dmesg for both kernels.
