[Bug 368499] Re: Whole desktop freezes for 15 secs when background image is modified

2010-08-20 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Yes, it keeps happening. But it's not immediate. Starts getting slowing
and blocking XOrg after a while. What you see is Xorg grabbing 100% CPU
and locking completely (Mouse moves, but the pointer don't change
depending on the context, and clicks, change of tab, windows movement,
and widgets on gnome-panel, everything freezes).

[Bug 368499] Re: Whole desktop freezes for 15 secs when background image is modified

2010-08-20 Thread Guillermo Pérez
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

On Jaunty, when the image file being used as desktop background is
overwritten or changed, the whole desktop freezes for 15 seconds. The
Xorg just after the freeze is shown at 99% CPU, but I can't be sure of
what is happening because everything freezes.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) Find the current image used:
  $ gconftool-2 -g /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename
  /home/.../imgs/current_bg.png
  2) Copy the file to another location
  $ cp /home/.../imgs/current_bg.png /tmp/tmp.png
  3) Copy the new file back to the original position
  $ cp /tmp/tmp.png /home/bisho/imgs/current_bg.png

After some seconds, the desktop while freeze for about 15 secs. The
mouse still moves, but the cursor doesn't change depending on the
context, windows are not responsive, pannels are freezed...

I noticed this because I have a program to change background image
including the earth with the proper shadow, and modify the image every
  30 minutes.

- This began happening after upgrading to jaunty. Previously this was
- working fine.

[Bug 368499] [NEW] Whole desktop freezes for 15 secs when background image is modified

2009-04-28 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Public bug reported:

On Jaunty, when the image file being used as desktop background is
overwritten or changed, the whole desktop freezes for 15 seconds. The
Xorg just after the freeze is shown at 99% CPU, but I can't be sure of
what is happening because everything freezes.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Find the current image used:
$ gconftool-2 -g /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename
/home/.../imgs/current_bg.png
2) Copy the file to another location
$ cp /home/.../imgs/current_bg.png /tmp/tmp.png
3) Copy the new file back to the original position
$ cp /tmp/tmp.png /home/bisho/imgs/current_bg.png

After some seconds, the desktop while freeze for about 15 secs. The
mouse still moves, but the cursor doesn't change depending on the
context, windows are not responsive, pannels are freezed...

I noticed this because I have a program to change background image
including the earth with the proper shadow, and modify the image every
30 minutes.

This began happening after upgrading to jaunty. Previously this was
working fine.

No, network manager is wrong doing.

By default network-manager should accept the routes told by the vpn
server. If the vpn server is telling the client that the default route
should be through the tunnel, nm should obey it. Of course it's great
that you could override the configuration sent by the vpn server, but
the problem here is that nm is not following the configuration sent by
the server.

My openvpn server is configured with:
redirect-gateway def1
This should add a default gw through the tunnel, with higher priority than the
already present default gw. Network Manager is not adding on Intrepid. It was
working properly on Hardy.

Also nm is not able to remember any manual route added to the
configuration.

[Bug 269071] Re: Intrepid regression: default route is no longer redirected over VPN tunnel

2008-12-03 Thread Guillermo Pérez
This is still unfixed.

I'm also affected by this problem on Intrepid. No default route is
created after stablishing the openvpn connection. Launching openvpn by
hand works well. The old nm from hardy was working well too.

I think is a nm problem, because openvpn directly works well.

There is also a problem with the nm routes configuration. When I try to
add a 0.0.0.0 default route to the nm tunnel config, it's never saved.
If I open again the routes, the list is empty. So setting routes by hand
is not a workaround for this problem.

[Bug 296724] [NEW] md device is created very slowly on boot, and big rootdelay is needed

2008-11-11 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Public bug reported:

I have fresh-installed Ubuntu 8.10 on a Dell PowerEdge 2950 III with
software raid.

The booting process stops complaining about a non existant root device,
and dropping to a busybox shell. After some seconds the md device
appears, and the booting could continue after issuing Ctrl+D.

Adding rootdelay=30 to grub options some times is not sufficient.
rootdelay=40 seems to works always, but obviusly makes boot really slow
and it's very strange that it takes so long to start the raid devices.

The RAID is configured as:
/boot - /dev/md0 (4 discs RAID 1)
/ - /dev/md2 (3 discs + 1 spare RAID 5)

The discs are 143Gb SAS 15K (they should be really fast)

I attach dmesg and lspci outputs. If you need any other information,
please request it.

[Bug 293019] [NEW] b44 driver constantly disconnects with heavy use

2008-11-03 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic

The b44 ethernet driver that comes with the new 2.6.27-7-generic kernel
(Ubuntu Intrepid) constantly disconnects the link when using it heavily
(during rsync backups). The link resumes, but the hickup is very
noticeable.

For normal use of the ethernet, there is no problem. Only with rsync,
when it's transfering 7-8 mbps under a 100Mbps network. With Hardy this
has never happened on the same machine, same network cable.

[Bug 264977] Re: Filenames in ~/.Private are not encrypted

2008-10-30 Thread Guillermo Pérez
For network-shared drives I understand the need of maintaining clean
filenames (or at least use the same key for encrypt them) to avoid
collisions.

But for user directories, there will be only one key, the key of the
user, so that one can be used for encrypt filenames. encfs does this.

It could be an option like one-user crypted directory. Implementing
this will be a sort path to the real implementation the people from
eCryptfs are working on, and it will be faster to offer to the public.

[Bug 232430] [NEW] Rhythmbox crashes GDM session changing between songs

2008-05-21 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Public bug reported:

Rhythmbox crashes all the GDM session, closing all the X when changing
between songs.

This *only happens if you are on another X session*. I suspect the new
ubuntu changes the device permissions because you are on other X
session. When rhythmbox ends playing songs, closes and opens the device,
so the permissions get noticed, and crashes, and all the GDM session
too!!!

I'm using directly the alsa device on sound properties, because with
pulseaudio I don't get any sound on my speakers. Just after boot I can
get it to work, but it ends not working. With pulseaudio this doesn't
happens, the sound get muted instantly on the change.

Steps to reproduce:
1. On System-Preferences-sound Select your sound device directly, not
Autodetect or Pulseaudio.
2. Open rhythmbox, play a song
3. Open a new X session with another user
4. Wait to the song to finish. When rhythmbox tries to change the song, the
other X session will crash and GDM will re-launch a new login screen!

MaxRequestsPerChild reached) it also gets stuck in Gracefully
finishing state.

This leaves from time to time stuck child processes, that remain there
till apache reaches maxclients and STOPS answering to connections! This
is a severe bug, worse than just avoid using reload on init script. I
have to monitor and completely restart apache every 5-7 days on a high-
traffic server and this is causing me lot's of problems. Please try to
release a fix soon. Thanks!

[Bug 220220] [NEW] Apache processes stuck in Gracefully finishing state

2008-04-21 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache

I have a big problem with apache 2.2.4-3ubuntu0.1 of latest gutsy.

Apache prefork uses a internal dummy connection to tell childs they
should die. When apache emits that request to a child (too many idle
workers, MaxRequestsPerChild reached...), the children correctly dies
(is not longer a proc in the system), but the apache main process still
thinks it's Gracefully finishing.

Server status page shows processes on this state in a number increasing
until Maxclients is reached and apache stops answering connections.

It can be reproduced on my system easily issuing a /etc/init.d/apache2
reload. With that I get a lot of connections in the 'G' state.

I'm also seeing problems with /etc/init.d/apache2 restart. It thinks its
stoped too soon, and the start finds that the socket is still being
used, logs are locked or other problems.

I have seen a maybe related issue on apache's bugzilla:
https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=42829
But I'm not sure.

It's on a xen virtual machine, maybe it's a problem related to this.

[Bug 193619] Re: php with fastcgi does not detect user abort

2008-03-27 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Please, it IS a bug. They closed the bug wrongly:
---
Script continues normally and abort IS ignored, this is of course the
intended functionality.

But the return of connection_status() is always 0, when it should be 1
(ABORTED) to indicate that the connection is closed because an abort.

See connection_status() documentation. The return of that function is
what is buggy here:
http://www.php.net/manual/en/features.connection-handling.php

Please, reopen this bug.

[Bug 12296] Re: PHP5 or PHP4 for apache2-mpm-worker

2008-03-19 Thread Guillermo Pérez
The explanation is that there are a few PHP extensions that don't work
well with threads, but right now most of them (and all the usual ones)
work fine.

I think a version of mod_php5 for apache2 threaded should be released
with ubuntu, so you can use the much better apache2-worker.

If someone needs a particular php extension that doesn't work with
threaded PHP, he will always be able to install mod_php5 prefork
version.

[Bug 12296] Re: PHP5 or PHP4 for apache2-mpm-worker

2008-03-19 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Yeah, right now I'm using that, but is a pain to configure for novices
compared to just install libapache-php5. At least some sample config
could be provided in a libapache-mod-php5-fastcgi package or similar
(that will have fastcgi dependance included)

Now I have to create a /etc/apache2/mods-available/php5-fcgid.conf:

AddHandler fcgid-script .php
Files ~ \.php$
Options ExecCGI
/Files
FCGIWrapper /path/to/a/php5-launch-script .php

The launch script is:
#!/bin/bash
export PHPRC=/path/to/conf
export PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN=20
export PHP_FCGI_MAX_REQUEST=5000

exec /usr/bin/php5-cgi

This is much more flexible than just mod_php5 (I could have different
launch scripts with different limits, conf directories... for each
virtualhost, plus the SuexecUserGroup directive). But as I said Ubuntu
should help a little bit more. People expects installing php5 and
apache2-mpm-worker to work. And not only it doesn't, but just through
unprocessed PHP code to anyone, and thats' is really dangerous.

[Bug 202080] [NEW] Firefox 3 beta 4 has problems with keyboard shortcuts

2008-03-14 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Public bug reported:

After installing beta 4 I have a few problems:

- It does not recover my previous session
- Writing on the url bar and hitting [Enter] does not load the URL
- A few shortcuts don't work:
   - Alt+[1-9] for changing the tab
   - Ctrl+L shows a load url dialog instead of focussing the url bar.

It's like the focus is improperly set to the File menu, so only those
shortcuts are working.

I'm using latest Ubuntu Hardy. This bug is important, as it makes
laptops unusable for presentations with projectors. Shouldn't be
considered as low importance.

[Bug 194318] [NEW] strtotime doesn't support 64 bit timestamps

2008-03-07 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: php5

PHP bug http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=44209 is affecting latest
feisty/hardy php packages (5.2.1/5.2.4-2ubuntu4). Now they have fixed it
in CVS. Is possible to get this fixed in ubuntu's PHP packages? At least
for next hardy. Thx a lot

Description:

strtotime() of years 2038 or 1900 does not work on 64 bit platforms,
that should not have problems with those dates. The rest of php
functions work properly with those extended dates.

Reproduce code:
---
On 64 bit platforms php date functions support greater range of dates.
For exampe:

?= date('d-m-Y',time()+3153600) ?
Returns:
3007-06-25

But strtotime does not work with those improved date ranges:

?= date('Y-m-d',strtotime('3007-06-25')) ?
Returns:
1970-01-01

I understand that output on 32 bit platforms, but on 64 bit should work
as the rest of functions, and return a valid 64bit timestamp for dates
2038 or 1900.

** Affects: php5 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Fix Released

I have tested setting 147 dpi in gnome font settings and only fonts in

font sizes than with using 96dpi.

With this epiphany renders graphics at normal scale. Text still is quite
big compared to firefox.

Mozilla works well, same as setting manually layout.css.dpi to 96 in

I could attach a screenshot if you want it.

[Bug 193619] [NEW] php with fastcgi does not detect user abort

2008-02-20 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: php5-cgi

This is related with php bug: http://bugs.php.net/37256

When using php in fastcgi mode, it does not detect any user abort.
connection_status() always return 0, even after user aborts connection.

I'm using hardy. It's supposed to be solved in PHP 5.2 since May 2006,
but perhaps hardy package 5.2.3-1ubuntu6.2 does not include the fix.

You can use this script to test the problem:
?
ignore_user_abort(true);

echo hello;
flush();
sleep(10);
echo bye

$fp=fopen('/tmp/conection_log.txt','a');
fputs($fp,'Connection status is: '.connection_status().\n);
fclose($fp);

If you press stop after loading the page (you will have time because the sleep
10), connection_status shouldn't be 0 at the end of the script.

[Bug 178558] Re: Firefox 3.0 makes everything annoyingly huge

2008-02-15 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Still this happens with FF beta 3. Fonts are rendered normal (same as
other gnome apps) but icons on the interface are doubled.

This is bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=394103 on
firefox's bugzilla.

I still suggest that:
- The interface should not be scalled. Text is rendered right now same size as
the gnome desktop. Icons should be the same size that the rest of the gnome
desktop.
- Scaling on the page contents could be useful for some people. But usually
people with high dpi screen wants the things small and have a lot of contents
on the screen.
   Posible solutions:
  - Scale only in *really* high dpi screens:
After scaling x2 in a 147dpi screen as mine the base resolution is 147/2= 73
dpi. That's *really* huge. I would consider scaling only when base resolution
is 120-150 dpi when the human eye does not see the separate pixels. i.e. in a
300 dpi screen a x2 zoom would have base resolution of 150 dpi and things will
look pretty. 73 dpi blurried x2 scaled image pixels are not pretty.
  - Ask the user for his preference:
Show a dialog like this:
You screen has been detected to have very high resolution and the pages will be
shown tiny (XX% the normal size on other screens). You can enable a default
page zoom adequate to you screen in the preferences settings.

[Bug 177895] Re: Kernel 2.6.24-2 causing ~1000 wakeups by Rescheduling Interrupts

2008-02-14 Thread Guillermo Pérez
This is very strange.

After disabling cpu1 the wakeups-from-idle per second drops from ~31000
to ~250, and the kernel IPI : Rescheduling interrupts disappears from
the output of the powertop.

But the power consumption actually increases. It goes from 22.8W while
idling with 2 cores activated to 24.8W with only one. It should be the
other way, so I dunno what is really happening. Maybe the powertop
utility it's not really acurate with two cores.

I forgot to say that this is on a Dell D830. And the battery runtime has
improved a lot anyway from gutsy - hardy (from 3.5 hours to almost 5
hours!)

I tried to put 3100 not 31000 wakeups :)

And I have noticed that the counter is clearly broken. The total says 3081 but
summing-up the wakeups from the list should be closer to 430. Kernel IPI is the
top cause with 166 wakeups, 38% of the total. Why the hell says 3081 is the
total?

[Bug 189850] [NEW] Gnome applets configuration reseted after hardy upgrade

2008-02-07 Thread Guillermo Pérez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

After an upgrade I'm experiencing strange problems:

The panel applets settings seems to have been reseted. For example the
revelation applet, was configured with a data file now asks You must
select a Revelation data file to use. Another example is the Multi Load
Applet. I have configured it to show all graphs: memory, network
traffic, ... but now it's in its default state, just a small cpu graph.
The clocks are in 12 hour format opposite to my settings (24h). The user
selector now show the name of the user (I have configured it to just
show the icon).

Strangely some (but only some) of the applets are in spanish -the
default system lang- but I always start session forcing language
english. NetSpeed, MultiLoad, the user selector, trash, workspace
switcher.

I don't know what could have reseted the gconf configuration, but is
very annoying...

Also the tomboy applet hangs on start. The .xsession-errors says:

** (gnome-panel:17527): WARNING **: panel-applet-frame.c:1278: failed to load
applet OAFIID:TomboyApplet:

I confirm the problem also affects Epiphany, and it's worse (no
workarrounds) because you can't change de dpi setting in about:config.

Opposite to FF3, only the page is scaled. The interface is the same as
other gnome apps, as it's pure GTK, not rendered by XUL.
