[Bug 432179] Re: cursor should not show during xsplash startup

2009-10-03 Thread HBLaw
I did not know that the cursor has already been removed (from the code).
Do you mean that if everything runs as designed there will not be a
cursor? (On my machine it is a round cursor ie. "busy"). I thought this
aesthetic issue has been ignored from the posts above.

But if it is just me, how can I identify the problem? Is there any
configuration files I can do? Does remove --purge and reinstall resolve
the problem?

Best Regards,
Bo

[Bug 432179] Re: cursor should not show during xsplash startup

2009-10-03 Thread HBLaw
It's like you see a delicious dish of food with a dead fly on the CENTER
of it. A lot of work can be done on other bugs, but all those work will
not have any positive effect if people feel bad. :-) People will not
know that ubuntu team has fixed so many bugs that prevented so many
problems (say those crashes happen to 1% of people) but everyone will
notice (sort of) the ugliness by placing a cursor in the middle of the
screen breaking all the supposed aesthetic value xsplash is to give.

[Bug 437759] Re: Weird Sound (in notification?) in Karmic

2009-09-28 Thread HBLaw
Follow up with this bug:

Maybe the lack of some quiet buffer when changing between applications
leads to this problem. It seems the sequence when changing application
is that pusleaudio first mute that application, and the set the volume
to certain value, and then play the sound from that application.

On my machine (HP 6515b), the mute-unmute sequence always produce some
sound like a short "boo--". (I.e. I can reproduce the weird sound by
mute-unmute in the volume control). That seems to be the source of this
issue. It might be that this only happens to certain hardware, which I
am not sure.

Thanks.

[Bug 437759] [NEW] Weird Sound (in notification?) in Karmic

2009-09-27 Thread HBLaw
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Hi,

I just installed Karmic Alpha 6 yesterday (upgraded from Jaunty) and I
experienced some weird sound problems. It is not with the general
playback or capture - rhythmbox, totem, Skype calls are fine. It is with
the notification sound. For example, when a new email arrives, the sound
will first mute and then unmute (within a milisecond) and the produce a
sharp, explosive sound (for a milisecond). Or when some buddy is online
in Skype. Or if you type in an terminal, and when there is no character
before and you hit backspace (generally, the system should "beep" to
indicate an invalid action), there is similar mute-unmute sequence with
the explosive sound. But after the first mute-unmute sequence, I will
not hear the same in the same application any more.

I guess it is more a configuration bug rather than a program bug. It
probably results from the default setting being mute, i.e. when
pulseaudio switches to the application it first mute the application,
and then tries to unmute it to play a sound.

Since no application crashed for this, I manually created this bug.

Thanks.

Bo

[Bug 64847] Re: [Ubuntu] Home folder configuration file arrangement

2006-10-12 Thread HBLaw
Or we can just bring home folder for common users to one higher level -

/home/username/.xxx
/home/username/.xxa
/home/username/.xxb
/home/username/.xxc
...

/home/username/realhome/ -> where users can organize themselves and GUI home
folder browser will restrict to this folder and will recognize this folder as
the user's 'home'

Those power users can easily go to their Linux sense home folder in
terminals, it will not bother configuration files.

[Bug 64847] Re: [Ubuntu] Home folder configuration file arrangement

2006-10-09 Thread HBLaw
Further your thought on the way Linux works, I would suggest an
alternative that may lie within Ubuntu's power. Why not patch file
browser a little bit so that the file browser will not show folders
begin with "." in home folder of users; and place another special folder
(or link or something) to access those ".XXX" files if anything cannot
be automatically done by Ubuntu.

[Bug 64847] [Ubuntu] Home folder configuration file arrangement

2006-10-09 Thread HBLaw
Public bug reported:

Suggestion Only:

When I check hidden files in home folder, there are many many ".X"
folders and files, which is annoying. I think they are all configuration
files. Why not put them in a .etc folder? So the home folder will be
neat, resulting in the following structure:

~/
~/.etc
~/.etc/XXX1
~/.etc/XXX2
...
~/Documents
~/Musics
...

Then if an average user by mistake opens the 'hidden file' button will
not be too annoyed and surprised. Maybe we can go one step further to
use ".configurations" instead of ".etc", so that even the users who do
not know common terminologies of Linux will not be startled. :)

I know things like this will cause lots of work. Just a suggestion.

[Bug 64819] [Edgy] Usplash should use black background

2006-10-09 Thread HBLaw
Public bug reported:

Reference is made to bug #64666 at
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/fbset/+bug/64666

I suggest the background color be changed back to black, because some
users will (not may) meet problems in their booting process in showing
splash image. As far as I know, full screen splash does not work on
every box that may use Ubuntu (at least for now) for software or
hardware reasons.

If for any reason, the splash image cannot be stretched to cover the
full screen, the user will see a black screen with a brown (or whatever
other color) box in the middle (or corner) as their boot splash (esp. on
LCD), which will be very ugly and cause panic in average users. Black
background color for splash will eliminate this problem.

** Affects: usplash-theme-ubuntu (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

** Changed in: fbset (Ubuntu)
Sourcepackagename: fbset => usplash-theme-ubuntu

** Description changed:

Please also consider that black background boot splash suggestion.
Should I file another bug or something?

[Bug 64666] [Edgy] 5 white blinking stripes when booting on i810 laptop

2006-10-08 Thread HBLaw
Public bug reported:

Boot splash is supposed to be a brown screen stretched to the whole
screen. On my laptop the screen is blank, with five white stripes
blinking within a 640*480 (I guess) box in the middle.

Specs:
SONY PCG-SRX55C (China market model, which should be comparable to SRX99/87 etc)
PIII M / 256M / i810 card shared memory

Software:
Kernel: 2.6.17-386/generic
Edgy updated to date

Maybe it is framebuffer problem (which may not be able to support my video card
to 1024x768) during boot.
On Drapper it is fine (black background with Ubuntu icon and messages), but i
understand the splash is confined in middle 640*480 square.

My solution: delete "splash" in grub config and no boot splash and no
problem (which is not ideal).

Suggestion:
1. Go back to Drapper splash; and
2. Use black background for splash (unless you are sure that splash will work
fine on all supported machines to fill the whole screen, because if resolution
is forced to shrink, there will be problem of black background with smaller
brown box on LCDs).
